I grew up from 1975-1985 spending every summer at my grandparents' home, who lived in Cherry Grove, NORTH Myrtle Beach. While we would do things on occasion in MB, the vibe is sooo much better, more laid back in NMB. I still go there and take my kids now. We avoid MOST of the tourist-y stuff in MB proper. Mostly true. I live in SC and work in Charlotte. The roads around Charlotte are a mess. Some bad roads and lots of construction. SC finally raised the gas tax a little, which hasn't been raised since 1986. I'm not a fan of tax increases, but this one was necessary. We are now getting some roads fixed.

South Carolina declared war on the United States thereby starting the Civil War. I was born at Fort Jackson(Columbia) SC, raised in NC where my ancestors settled since 1680. I grew up in the foothills of NC. I went to college in Greensboro NC. Lived in Charlotte NC, Myrtle Beach SC, Waxhaw NC, and now in Rock Hill SC. My son lives in Asheville NC, which is a wonderful area but the cost of living in unbelievable bad. I think NC is better because it is more diverse.

Both Tennesee and NC struggled with the decision to secede. Tenn and NC both provided more troops to the Union than the other Southern states. Include 3 regiments of black Americans (the 1, 2nd and 3rd NC Volunteer Infantries) Also, NC lost had the highest death toll of soldiers during the war (at least, that is what NC says ;-) NC has the Devil's Tramping Ground and is the birthplace of the amazing Nina Simone, Thelonious Monk and Earl Scruggs....and Michael Jordan.

Why do businesses close at 6pm on Sunday? Why can't we buy liquor on Sunday? Why is it so hot and humid here? Why does the state shut down if we get snow and/or ice? My question to them is, why didn't they do research before they moved here? Google is your friend.

I’m from North Carolina, I have to admit our neighbors to the South have some interesting history, and frankly Charleston is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve been to. I also think they’ve managed to retain their culture a little better than N.C. You really have to go into the sticks here to see some down home North Carolina life. With that being said, you have bigger cities in North Carolina, with major national events, high end shopping, sporting events, restaurants, etc. Both states compliment eachother well, and while I don’t mind paying a little more for gas to have nice roads, I’ll always get me some South Carolina gas when I go to Carowinds (only amusement park to be in two states), or to see my granny in York County.

@Matty Zee I agree im from nc (johnston county) and sc and nc are very similar when it comes to living outside of a city. Like you said I believe nc universities are the only real differencing factor as each city has a major school Wilmington-Uncw, Durham- Duke, Chapel Hill- UNC, Raleigh- Nc State, Asheville- App state, Greenville - ECU, etc. I too have noticed that NC tries very hard to come off as progressive and not so southern especially in college towns such as Chapel Hill or Asheville im just glad im not the only one who thought that.

I do agree that North Carolina is urbaner than South Carolina. Most of the cities in NC are centered in the Western/ Central part of the state which makes it easier to travel from one city to another in about 90 minutes. For example, Greensboro to Charlotte is approx 70 miles while Greensboro to Raleigh is approx the same. This is mainly because of NC's Interstate corridor systems like I 40, I 85, and I 77.

Charlotte is the biggest city because it consumed it's county in the 1990 and 2000's before the NC state government made that illegal. Raleigh boomed 10 years after but with the new law much of the growth was seen in bedroom communities in the suburbs of Raleigh which are other cities because Raleigh is not allowed to expand without permission. Wake County (Raleigh) and Meck County (Charlotte) have almost the exact population of 1 million.
If you google map the cities in North Carolina you can see how weird the border are with lots of exclaves because of the law.

Pretty close to true. NC is definitely upper south. SC is really its own special kind of south, especially the Low Country. In fact, I would go so far as to say that every part of the South (except Texas and Louisiana) is basically on a spectrum of Charleston Appalachia culturally. Some parts of the south are like 80% Appalachia and 20% Charleston, other parts are like 50-50, and all of the cultures in the South are basically some percentage of each. Deep South would be like 50% Appalachia, 50% Charleston. Upper South ranges from 0-10% Charleston, and 90-100% Appalachia. Low Country is 100% Charleston.

North Carolina declared independence from England three times:
Mecklenberg County declared independence May 20, 1775
And the Halifax Resolve declared independence April 12, 1776.
Those are the two dates on the North Carolina flag, and also why some North Carolina license plates say "first in freedom."

There are positive and negatives to most states and this video is probably pretty accurate. I prefer the mountains of NC and the beaches of SC. The cost of living(now a senior citizen) in SC is overall much less. Homes cost less...taxes are less for sure. Overall...you could not pay me to go back to living in NC. I do love Asheville and that area though and would love to have a second home there. Charleston is not the only beautiful city in SC. We have done a better job of retaining our culture. Some parts of SC feel like you are going back in time. I love it here and the landscape is gorgeous.
