A lot of people can get really hurt about that because its makes them feel different and useless. It really sucks since aro and ace people are such a small percentage of the lgbt community.
@@urlocalfridge2699 it really does suck. I had to explain asexuality and aromanticism to a couple people I used to work with. One was very open minded and understanding. She's a very good friend of mine, and she understands all points on the aro and ace spectrums, as well as other attractions and gender identities we've discussed. The other person, however, just couldn't seem to grasp the concepts no matter what I told her. Eventually, I gave up trying to get through to her.
What irritates me the most is when people in the LGBTQ+ community treat us like that. It's like, most of you have had people tell you 'you're confused, it's a phase, you're sick, something's wrong with you,', yet you turn around and say the same to us?
The community is supposed to be a place of safety, love, and acceptance. We shouldn't get invalidate by the people who should accept us.

I'm going to say this only once but people don't owe you anything if you like them, they're not required to automatically like you back, you're not entitled to their love and affection!
I believe what they meant was that you get involved with people, with whom you want to have sex, and once they realize that you don't love them Romeo and Juliet style, they feel used, even though you really love them as a friend, and that is a much more stable foundation imo, but people are conditioned to think that romantic love is what keeps couples together (when in fact it is not, even for 'normal' couples), but that doesn't sell as many Valentine's day cards and diamond rings, I guess.
Ikr. As an aromantic, I reject people the best way I can. I do not enjoy breaking people's hearts because I can't feel romantic love, if anything, I hate doing that.

It's kind of funny to me when people assume aromantic automatically equates to "heartless". I certainly don't and cannot speak for everyone, but I know one of the signs that made me realize I was aro was that I absolutely adored anything and everything platonic. Honestly, I'm super gushy and super into my best friendships. (It's kinda gross, LMAO)
I'd like to think my stronger, more intense feelings of love for friends and family kind of made up for the lack of feeling romantically attracted to people. I'm not missing out. And family/friends are not less important than the love you feel for a romantic partner.

i discovered i was ace (and later aro) when i was 15 and things suddenly made sense in a way they never did before. I sought out the ace community and found so much validation, and i also found out that there were a lot of people who didn't think being ace or aro was "really" lgbt. i was very young and impressionable, and the things they said and the posts making aspecs look bad crept into my subconscious, and they made me believe that the ace community was toxic, instead of a few toxic people and some trolls, as i know it was now. i convinced myself that since i definitely didn't like guys, that i must be gay, and i identified as a gray-ace lesbian and faked crushes, but still distanced myself from the ace and aro communities. it took me years to accept myself for who i am, and that it was ok to be aroace.
it makes me so mad to think about how people's negativity made me lie to myself and be someone i'm not. it makes sad to know that i definitely wasn't the only person to go through something like this.

I relate so hard to this! It took a few years to realize, but I'm aromantic. I've always known I wanted kids, biological or not. When I was younger people would talk about their SOs or crushes and I just skipped straight to the idea of raising kids, not a single thought about who my future spouse would be or if I'd even have one.

I was in summer camp (this very bad one where the teachers were literally shit) and so there are 2 sisters (One of the sisters is lesbian) The straight one acted like she knew what the sexualities meant and started talking about sexualities to other students who literally only knew the sexuality , gay.
She then gets to the ace part (so far she is doing a okay desc. on the sexualities) " Asexuals are the ones that don't feel love at all." I wanted to speak up and gives my speech on how Asexuals can feel loves it's just that they don't have sexual attraction (I have a friend who is ace and she taught me ALOT) but since I was the kid who was left out and made fun of I couldn't dare to speak up.

I've just recently came out as aromantic, I've been out as bisexual for a while now
I still struggle with it though, as a part of me does want a partner for the physical intimacy and such, but its helped me understand myself and feel less disgust for myself for not experiencing romantic feelings.
I kinda would like to clear something up:
Being aromantic doesn't always mean that you don't want to be in a relationship and be forever singe. Aromantic is about little to romantic attraction, not necessarily desire. That would be being romantic-repulsed, bc there are a handful of aromantic ppl who are romantic-positive and want to get in a relationship, but are unfortunate enough to never/rarely have experienced romantic attraction (cupioromanticism)

I am aro and I absolutely love valentines day. Trust me I used to hate it for how it's commercialized, but after coming out, it just gave a new purpose, which is to show love and appreciation for my family and friends. So many people focus on the romantic couple aspect of valentines that they forget that giving presents to friends and family exists. I even had a few looks from people when I offered chocolate to my friends and they ask me "are you sure you're not a couple" and I am just like " Yes I am sure, I just love my friends and I wanna show them all equally how I appreciate them"

I'm aromantic,and I tought I was the only one who knew what it was.It feels good to have some people who actually know the definition of it and doesn't mix it with asexual.
Want to say one thing to any people who think that being aromantic shouldn't have its own title(because people have said this to me before):
If you were a straight man, or a lesbian woman, would you appreciate people saying you are attracted to men?
If you were a gay man, or a straight woman, would you appreciate people saying that you are attracted to women?
What would you do in this situation? Explain to them how you identify.
If there is no aro/ace how are we supposed to identify?

Why aromantics are always represented like people who hate relationships? What about others who want a relationship, but can’t fall in love and feel attraction to others.. it feels like a loophole with no end.
