Tom was as smooth as silk on the runway; he must have been a great pilot at the commercial airlines; flying all his life he made it look easy; another great episode Bobby ; you hit gold with these private planes and personable pilots; awesome
I know this airplane personally since I do maintenance to Tom’s airplanes. Really cool to watch this video dude 👌🏽
Hey awesome thanks so much!
Yes, Daniel installed my Garmin G5 standby attitude indicator just a few weeks before this video was completed.
@@FlyingDoodles Someone left a spin recovery link for the tomahawk. I was pressed for time but watched anyway. Very nice 👌. I really love your videos. So many good planes out there. Not a whole lot of money to buy them all..
@@thomasgrove5441 always loved the eagles nest community I'm in the dfw area in Arlington
What a lovely man, and a great plane. Living his best life, love it.
I like Tom's style... very reassuring and nice steady pace. I have 350hrs instructing in PA38s but have never flown one with a windshield as clear as this one!
Hi skippy, the difference between flight school and self ownership. Thank you for your nice thoughts. TomG
What a beautiful little plane, and love how he's updated the panel to a modern very nice system. His love for it shows throughout, as does his skills as a pilot. Love how he doesn't skirt any of the procedures, as some do when they get that much experience, but still follows them through. Great video!
Skirts the most basic of traffic pattern entry procedures. Depends on his panel and radio to "see and avoid". Beautiful plane but lousey situational awareness.
E T always someone to criticize...id have respect for you if you showed your real name and told everyone where you're located and also what are your pilot certifications. Take care, troll.
He's a Pro
Getting old like Tom has done would be a dream come true. What a great guy. Thanks for this video!
My first flight ever in a single engine plane was in a traumahawk. That got me hooked so , I owe my entire flying career to the little gem. Thanks Piper. Oh and great video Doodles!!!
Watching An Old Time Pilot With Thousands Of Hours Using Glass Like That & Following The Checklist By The Book, So Cool! I Was Wondering How Much Weight All That Glass Added . . .
$25K tomahawk with $50K instrument panel............SWEET!
There’s a school near Vancouver Canada that spent almost $100,000 on the panel for a Cessna 152 :P
@Fu Dog Whisperer: ...because I was inverted! Seriously, without a glass stack then only Diamond and Cirrus can play, unless my bird is fully amortized and it's an expense. ;)
@@GrizzlyWhale okay that is crazy!
That gave me a chuckle too! Top of the line stuff 8 or 9 years ago!
He probably has the money to dump in it without a problem when you get older you care less about money and more about the time you have left still healthy to enjoy yourself. If you can afford to blow money have a smile on your face money well spent.
Interesting. I instructed in Tomahawks for approximately 1800 hours in the very early 1980's at Peter O'Knight Airport on Davis Island in Tampa. I think we operated five at one time and they were very tough aircraft to withstand the pace and rigors of that operating environment in the salt saturated moisture of Tampa Bay. I chuckled at the comments involving "extra horsepower" and "fully IFR", not two attributes I associated with the aircraft I remember operating. What an incredible panel he has assembled and the voice activated GPS was rather amusing for the noise levels I used to encounter. At one point we even stuffed the ventilation channels with steel wool to try and dampen wind noise. I did a lot of spin training in our fleet and they proved to be rather predictable, by that I mean each spin was going to be different from the last Tomahawk you spun. Learned a lot flying those aircraft and it made the next twenty odd years of flying Falcon jets a bit more enjoyable. Thanks for the memories.
Michael Murray I taught at TPF in the early 2000s! Best airport in the country!
Michael Murray, I looked out the back when we spun one once, that tail looked a bit too flexible for me though! I much prefer to spin the C150 though!
I remember an large article in a flying magizine talking about the Traumahawks that crashed with high time pilots. Apparently caught in flat spins. Just like the test pilot from Piper said no too Tomahawk behave the same in a stall. Apparently they eliminated One Wing rib and lightened the wing skin in production. Also was supposed to have a wing root fairing was eliminated.
None the less that is a very pretty tomahawk. Nice job.
What a beautiful airplane! LOVE the voice commands to the GPS, that is cool!
He seems like such a kind person.
My first 200 hours of flight time after my discovery flight was ALL Tomahawk time, and I enjoyed it immensely. It is my most favorite airplane. I continue to look for Tomahawks even now to retrofit to both look and fly as nice as Tom's Piper. Awesome looksee. Continuing to motivate my search. Great video.
I love Tomahawks! I started ny career almost thirty six years ago when I soloed a PA-38 on a warm and hazy summer afternoon in Central Ohio. Tom has got himself a lovely airplane, there. A little mimi-airliner.
Love the PA38. Earned my wings in one and much later despite flying Complex Singles still rented a Tomahawk once in a while just because of the pleasure of flying it and nailing the numbers.
Nice plane. The cockpit looked like a single seater from the outside but I was amazed how much room you both had from the inside view. There was actually room between your shoulders in there.
Nice little bird. I remember delivering brand new ones to flight schools in Australia in 1980-1.
Its been many years since I've flown a Tomahawk. In my days of training I remember they Spin really well. Looking at the panel, it would appear there is far more money invested than what the airplane itself would have cost. It is by far the best Tomahawk in the sky for sure.
Yep. They spin very well:-) ua-cam.com/video/xzFgqtPVCZ0/v-deo.html
Well, Bobby...I never realized I had an interest in planes til I started watching your videos. I especially enjoy your interviews with the owners. Good stuff Mr. White. This old dog is a Jack Russel.....
If you haven't watched any of Trent Palmers videos, I would recommend him as well.....I am really not much of a sailor or flyer, but Bobby does such a great job producing exciting and entertaining content!
I really enjoyed this video
So nice for you to spend time with Mr. Grove and what probably is the nicest tomahawk on this planet
love what he's done to the panel
nice he could live out his dreams
sad we didn't get any pictures of lunch
Thanks for everything and cannot wait for the next one
All of his movements are smooth and easy, regardless of what his hands are touching in that cockpit. Just like my awesome CFIIs taught me.👍🇺🇸
(Thank you Chuck Platts and Captain Ed)!
Hi U.S.,Thank you, we are what we feed on. Thank's to my CFI 's and other pilot trainer/friends. Norman Short, Rick Butz, Tricky Dick, and Dave Wells. Best regards to those gone west. TomG
@@thomasgrove5441 You're welcome TomG. I am based in Abilene, T.X. and if for any reason you are ever this way or if I happen to be in your neck of the woods, would be an honor to fly with you/have a burger or just poke holes in the clouds. Happy/Safe Flying!🙏🇺🇸👍
Nice video Bobby! I got my private certification 20 years ago flying the Tomahawk in northern RI. I is a great flying plane that gets a bad rap with spin recovery. That plane does well in strong cross winds when the 152's are sitting on the tarmac. Loved flying it!
He makes it look very smooth and simple, I am new to this, so it's a lot all at once. It is good to see someone so confident and comfortable with their flying.
I really like this format. Looking forward to more aircraft and stories.
Thanks for sharing! By far the nicest Tomahawk I have seen. Brings back great memories - I got my Private ticket using Tomahawks in the early 90s.
Hi Daniel, Thanks for looking, they are a nice little airplane TomG
I can't imagine spending that much money on a two seat airplane with low payload weight. I guess his mission is just local fun flights rather than cross-country trips with passengers. It does fly as fast as a 172S and burns a gallon or two less. Are there STCs for power adders/different engines or are the speed mods drag reduction?
I thought T-tails were LESS effective at low power settings and low airspeed because of the airfoil being outside of the prop slipstream.
LOVE that voice activated GPS. That would be handy as heck in IMC, provided it works reliably. (It does confirm the command, which is essential.)
Hi Jon, Absolutely, fun flights is now the objective, two people or less....Fun on 7.5 GPH at 114 kts.. The voice activated GPS is still over the top and soooo much fun,and functional. Too bad the company was pushed out of business( VFS101 Voice Flight Systems) However , the previous owner and developer still answers his phone and is a great guy and loves his brainchild... Payload, me and my wife a suitcase or two, perfect. Great little airplane. Upgrade to 125 hp makes it fun and faster ( relatively).. Thanks for looking at Bobby's web site also TomG
Thank You for the memories. I learned how to fly in a tomahawk back in the early 80’s. A great airplane.
As someone who used to fly frequently but does not anymore due to career/family/time constraints, I thoroughly enjoy these little videos. Makes me feel like I'm getting out to the airport!
Thank you all for your nice comments and stories, have enjoyed reading all of them. Tom G
Amazing airplane. The Tomahawk has always been one of my favorite single engine planes.
LOVE the Tomahawk!! Two doors that can be open for taxi, great visibility, easy flying. Just don't spin it. This one is downright beautiful!
Tom, we sure enjoyed flying with you in this video... Your the kind of Pilot I really enjoy being around and speaking with; Amazing Tomahawk you have there....
Tom was super. Look forward to another video with him. Stick and rudder man. Thanks
How cool is this pilot, a real pro.
I did all my ratings up to CFI in a tomahawk. The school I work for uses Cessna 150's, but I do miss the tomahawk. Always loved the amazing visibility in them !!!
So many trips with friends and my golden retriever to so many west coast destinations again great memories thanks
Dude has maybe the most calming voice on earth.
North Texas is such a nice place for small aircraft flying. Mr. Groves obviously loves to fly and he has the very best to do that in. Thanks for introducing us to another fine fellow and his fun aircraft!
I did my instrument and spin training in a Piper Tomahawk with the AD for the rudder completed. I thoroughly enjoyed flying that little airplane in hard actual IMC.
If I ever own a plane it will be like that. Nothing less. Great looking machine.
I love how this channel shows the people and personalities flying those aircrafts. Tom`s a really nice guy, as an airline pilot i hope i can be in his situation someday.
Bobby, you are getting to meet some really great people on this You Tube Channel. I have watched all of them, and not knowing anything about airplanes, it is the variety of pilots you interview that impress me. They are all so different and all so genuinely nice and interesting!! This was a great idea.
Nice plane,nice guy.
Great plane bobby and a great guy to fly with I have a lot of time for people like that. Thanks for having us along cheers
Got my private in a Tomahawk. The panel it had was...um...a bit different ;-) Great little planes!
I agree, most people who bad mouth them , have never flown one, can't blame them with all the bad press. TomG
@@thomasgrove5441 You just know their level of experience when they mention Traumahawk, either student or never flown one. I have worked on, and flown them, for four decades and have never heard an owner badmouth the things.
I did my PPL checkride in the Tomahawk what a lovely 2 seater. Glad to see some people still love and respect this little gem with wings. 👍👍 ✈ ✈
What a fantastic gent, who would not love this man as an instructor
Awesome beautiful” tramahawk” owned a 1978 model flew it like a car i actually commuted in the bay area in late 80’s with it. Last flight i delivered to new owner to vanita Oklahoma. Thank you for all the videos that allow mr to reminisce.
Man i had fun i that ap.
This is the best flying site! As they say "Short, sweet and hard to beat." You've captured the heart of flying. I sold my '59 Beech Travelair twin about 7 years ago after putting on 1200 hours or so flying out of Phoenix. Keep doin' what you're doin'. There are lots more airplanes out there whose owners are just itchin' to talk about 'em. Thanks so much, Dave in Phoenix, (KDVT).
Hi David, the Travelair is a sweet one.TomG
I worked for 31 years as Controller in a General Aviation Aerodrome in Portugal. There were just a few Tomahawks and truckloads of Cessna 152s. No one really liked the Piper, but I never met anyone who disliked the Cessna.
Like many others have replied, I too received my primary training in a Tomahawk (with one VOR receiver). I wonder how easy it would have been with that avionics package 35 years ago. LOVE TECHNOLOGY!
Did you stare at the VSI looking for that magic 500 fpm?
This man has such a kind, spirit I really enjoyed listening to him talk about his plane :)
I remember having a few students in the old "tramahawk" :-P
This is a great channel! Will soon be one of the biggest on aviation. Keep up the great work.
Dude is slick.
Thank you for sharing! What a great plane!
Great video. Never dreamed I’d be envious of a tomahawk owner but you couldn’t do anymore to this airplane. My Cherokee 180 is jealous too. Tom is a true professional even on a short fun flight. Inspiring.
True professional pilots don't bust into airport traffic patterns with long strat in approaches. True professional pilots don't depend on radio calls like..."any other traffic please advise". True professional pilots maintain a good traffic scan. Beautiful plane and panel, but an accident waiting to happen behind the yoke.
@@et5881 "True professional pilots don't bust into airport traffic patterns with long strat in approaches." Stop it. Just stop it. My 40 year 20,000 hour CFI (no commercial, all GA experience) does straight in approaches. It's done by lots of people with all levels of experience.
Bobby, great video! She was a sweet Tomahawk for sure!. I loved the visibility from the cockpit.
I would love to see more of this Tomahawk! Great vid!!!
What a nice little airplane! Love that panel!
My First Solo...brings back memories alright.
I did my flight training in one at Laurel, MD 1979-1980. Never forget how that thing launched on my first solo minus my flight instructor's roughly 135 pounds. It was as if it had rockets strapped to it! I was screaming my lungs out for the first couple of minutes.
Very nice. I soloed in a Tomahawk in 1979 and did my private checkride at Lancaster.
Hi Scott, Funny, This airplane was on lease back to a flight school( KLNC) for a short period in 2000., and then again at KRBD in 2001. I hope your time in it was well thought of.....My has been. Thanks TomG
That's is a sweet Tomahawk. Better than one's I used to see. Thanks for sharing
I made my first Transatlantic crossing in a Tomahawk in the late 80's. Didn't have GPS; dead reckoning and an ADF, baby!
Bobby, that footage over the nose during initial take-off/landings, as well as the over the wing footage in this video, is some of the best yet! Keep up the excellent work!
Was my first aircraft many happy years flying all around Australia. Ours cruised about 110 knots slippery little devil. Loved ours.
Tom was awesome and I love what he did to the Piper. I am enjoying your content.
Impressive instrumentation in that Piper Tomahawk!!
That is a cool little airport. Seems like the type where people park and walk across the runway to get to their hanger. And it's cool how some hangers are beside the runway and is accessible with runway only
One of the best episodes yet.
Fabulous little plane, I first trained on one, logged 43hours before switching to C152 aerobats. Great episode 👍
This guy is awesome, a true pilot and has the voice as well.
This was one of the first trainers I ever flew in, in 1986 at Eagle Creek Airport in Indianapolis. It was the first plane I ever did a stall in. Neat little thing - sort of laid out like a little fighter plane. Had a nasty nickname because of its stall characteristics - they called it "trauma-hawk" because it would supposedly stall violently. But I always loved it.
Great video! :) Brings back my memories from flight training in the early 2000s. Thanks for sharing! :)
Excellent visibility, loved the flight. Very interesting YT channel, thanks for starting it!
Thank you for watching!
Lovely aeroplane, lovely guy, great pilot.
I've always liked the Tomahawk, from when they first came out - then the reputation hit (in the UK such was mainly due to training accidents), but it's all relative and I'm warming to these little aeroplanes all over again.
Wonderful video! Good to know that there are people like Tom who keep the history alive! Thanx Flying Doodles for the video and Thanx Tom for that beautiful Piper!
Wow the Tomahawk! That's what I did most of my training and eventually got my private ticket in. N2460G, it ended up getting a wing busted up by a young student a couple years after I completed my training. This video brings back some fond memories. 60G did not go that fast for sure.
I got to do spin training in a Tomahawk a long time ago. What a blast. Fun airplane to fly
Beautiful Tomahalk.
I ran after a Mooney 201 with the tow bar still attached. I had to get ahead of it to signal the pilot to stop. It scared the hell out of me as visions of an embedded tow bar in my gut briefly occured.
Great pilot, pleasure to listen to.
Primary training, solo, spins, cross country flights .... yay Tomahawk ! Especially this $200,000 one 😄
Did my spin training in a Tomahawk when getting my UK PPL (the Cheetahs in which I did most of the course were not spin rated). Nice little aircraft to fly.
Absolutely beautiful plane this is.
I am retired now, 70 years old, was in the Marines 1967-70, then college, learned to fly, 25 years Mainframe Information Systems Analyst, I owned the 1982 Tomahawk II N91386 for a few years, had been own by Central Main Flying Service Old Town Maine and a nice man in New Hampshire. Kept it at Mercer Co Airport Trenton NJ. It was good airplane, a lot of early morning weekend flights. I think a STC for 6.00 RG tires is nice thing. I miss flying, to expensive for me anymore...
Looking forward to that 235. I have one in what i like to refer as vintage condition hahaha. But i love her. I think they are awesome planes not too much information on them on the net.
What a nice plane and pilot! That's a pro right there. That was a very nice hangar too. I wouldn't mind a tour of what pilots keep in their hangars, and I always enjoy the radio talk with towers and other planes. Loving all of the camera angles. Top notch video.
A pro pilot would make a correct pattern entry, not depend on..."any traffic please advise...," ( There are aircraft out there legally flying with NO radios), and look around for other traffic. Poor situational awareness displayed here offset by all the panel money can buy.
My first lessons were in a Tomahawk!!! Great little plane!!! Another great video Bobby!!
I’m supposed to take in flight in this soon. Coincidentally made friends with the fella that painted Tom’s Tomahawk.
lotsa great memories from my days training in the Tomahawk.
What an incredibly smooth pilot!!! Beautiful airplane as well!!!!
Great vieo thnaks, broought back good memories of my Tomahawk flying time for my PPL back then....Laurie
What a nice old man and what a nice airplane he's got. Good for him :)
Good show Bobby, brings back lots of memories. My first solo and the next 25 hours were done in the Tomahawk. Next time show a stall in the Tomahawk with the camera on the elevator, they get a proper good shake up going on. Love the channel. Cheers
Wow!!!!! I trained and solo’d in a Tomahawk. Wish I had those instruments. Nice plane!
Doodles that's one cool guy Great Plain, good upload thanks.
What a dream set up he has. I wish my garage was near that nice.
Another great clip, thanks, and yep best looking tomahawk I have seen
