Fun Fact: In the first couple James Bond books he carried a small Beretta. In "From Russia with Love" his Beretta jams in a firefight. In the subsequent book "Dr. No" Q branch assigns him the PPK for the first time, citing the Beretta's previous malfunction. Bond resents this at first because M calls the Beretta a lady's pistol and he initially finds the PPK to be too bulky. Eventually he comes to love the PPK as we all know
Apparently, someone wrote Ian Flemming shortly after the first book, decrying the use of the Beretta, and discussing what would be a better weapon for Mr. Bond, and suggested the PPK. Flemming took it to heart and from then on wrote Bond with his now signature sidearm.

I thought his Beretta got caught in his holster because of it's silencer at the end of FRWL. That's why he not only got a new pistol but a new holster as well.
Ian Fleming , was issued a Colt 1908, . 25 caliber , listed as a Browning per the European fashion at the time. It was left as part of his estate and I have the serial number somewhere in my records. Fleming did not own a Beretta, but he loved the name of it in print for his novels. Since he was issued a .25 for his personal defense in WW II, he must have been a bit amazed when it was described as a ladies handgun and not a very nice lady at that...
This was one of my "dream guns". I finally got one after nearly 30 years. For me, it's a natural shooter, dead on accurate despite no real sights. As soon as ccw comes in, this is my edc weapon. Love it!
Great gun...so easy to carry.Bought one for my daughter because she LOVES Daniel Craig...bought then for myself because I loved the gun. I have had Berettas,S&W revolvers and semi auto and this is my favorite carry.
I have carried one for 10+ yrs now in SS ppks. I love it! 380 in blowback is sharp, but it also won't jam if placed up against a target similar to a revolver. A delayed system can jam if muzzle is blocked up by target itself. Wished I had an older 32acp pre war. It would be my prized gun. Mine was made in Maine and works flawlessly with anything. I shoot solid coppers, buffalo bore. Hot load! The gun is buult like a tank and weights it too. Worth it. It's my goto ccw gun.

I believe you are making reference to "Bond...James Bond" carrying one in the classic Sean Connery days. I always wanted one as kid to play guns with my friends, never did find a toy back then that looked like it. A cool little firearm.

I love the Walther PPK and the PPK/S. My grandfather bought a PPK in 32 ACP when he was young and he still has it to this day. The PPK was the first pistol I've ever shot so it holds a dear place in my heart. I'm glad many people feel the same way

I have the U.S. made stainless version of the PPK. It is one of the nicest pistols I have. The fit and finish are second to none. It is a joy to shoot. Field stripping for cleaning is so easy. I am glad I was finally able to get one.
I bought my Walther PP (.32 cal) while I was stationed in Germany back in 85. Love this little gun. Will never get rid of it. Might need to contact Walther to get some history on it. Still have the original cardboard box, target used for testing, and paperwork that came with the gun.
I also bought a Walther PP .32 at the rod and gun club in Germany. It was a reconditioned police pistol, which I bought with holster for $75.00. Great little gun, and very accurate.
Collector guns are pre war as original factory was destroyed during the war.

Excellent review. Had mine since 1978. Absolutely reliable and can can count on it. I fine CCW and classy firearm when wearing a suit or a tux.

We used the PP/PPK In the Swedish police force until as late as 2006 when we changed for different versions of the SIG Sauer 9mm. The reason we stopped using the PP was since it lacked a bit of punch, not having a real effect on people under the influence of drugs. Otherwise it was a lovely little pistol.
A side note is that the PPK was the first double action/single action pistol and the first pistol to be considered a concealed carry pistol. Walther created the pistol in order to give under cover officers a more practical and useable concealed weapon alternative. Hence the name; Polizei Pistol Kriminalmodell.
because it was loaded with light loads by Norma so as older weapons in the caliber would handle the round whereas the Walther should have been fed rounds by Hertanburger much more powerful.
Police shoot people because they're on drugs in Sweden?
@@pearlmax Police do some times have to use violence to pacify armed suspects that attack civilians or the police yes. People under the influence of drugs are sometimes harder to stop, for obvious reasons. I don’t think that is any different anywhere in the world.

@@liamg1706 The change to Sig was initiated after a man under influence of drugs attacked a police patrol with a sword. The suspect managed to injure several officers before he was finally killed. In all he was shot 18 times before a fatal shot to the neck finally killed him.
This was probably the BEST presentation that I have viewed on line. This man is no BS or a salesman! He provided very good simple and intelligent information. As a Law Enforcement officer I carried a .380 as a "back up" weapon. I loved that gun. I have to admit that I'm attracted to the Walther and may entertain getting me another. Currently I carry concealed my old trusty revolver. Yeah...I'm old. I carried a revolver as an officer. Hard to teach an old dawg a new trick. Point to all of this is, I liked this presentation. Thanx.
pretty good explanation, no BS and no glamourizing. I know next to nothing about guns, but was aware of this one due to Bonds carrying it, if I had to buy one this would be one to consider, but hey, I live in Canada, so I will save the cash, and keep being peacefull.

Living in Britain, I love watching videos about all the pistols and revolvers I’ll never be allowed to own. This is certainly one of the best overview videos on here, and one of the most desirable pistols for me. It makes me sad that I’ll never have one, but happy I don’t need one.

Such a classic pistol. Nothing uneeded, just a nice compact lead thrower that does the job it was designed for with nothing fancy.

The fixed barrel is what makes the PPK so accurate.
Doesn't the bullet completely leave the barrel before a locking barrel unlocks to cycle? I didn't think that was really a major factor in the accuracy of pistols, but I'm no expert.
@@ATSaale I guess less moving parts and its fixed tight doesn't have to touch the slide as much as glock.I think its the same thing as the free floating barrel for rifles..still idk im not expert on firearms.That is maybe why they don't mount bypod on the barrel,barrel flex etc.
@@david-yi6dm Also fixed barrels make awesome silencer host compared with their Browning action counterparts. The weight of the silencers at the end of Browning types actions is really sketch
True. Also, the small sights help with accuracy, if not speed in target acquisition. “Aim small, miss small”. I love my PPK/s.
This gun has a great history behind it. It was originally designed for German police. But because of its reliability (German made), compactness, and quality, the German Army adopted it along with the famous Luger during WW2. As German officers could use any pistol available to them during the war, many chose this gun. That speaks volumes. The Argentine gun manufacturer, Bersa, has made a Walther PPK copy at 1/3 the price. There is a video on UA-cam titled, "James Bond gets his Walther PPK." The man in the video was the original man to inform Ian Fleming about the Walther and how the CIA had used that pistol for 20 years. So Fleming incorporated the story in the film Dr. No. If such a pistol was used by the CIA for so long, that too should tell anyone who questions its reliability or lethal power. Perhaps there are more viewers on UA-cam who know more than I do. Be that as it may, the CIA and German army relied on it.
British SAS have used it, Mossad, CIA SAD, and some field agents as well, both supressed and not. It is heavy but small. 100% reliable. Several calibers have been issued. The 22lr ones are old school non pot metal ones, not the joke of ones made by that air soft maker who makes the cheaper 22lr one now. They are mainly used by people who are undercover yet have to have a gun. Also for eliminations.
Usually in foreign contries agents will not carry anything to avoid hassles, esp deep cover. Only when a likely hood of a threat they will break the rule. Beretta 21 is also issued to many intel agents. Some are ghost guns made without marks. Some have but trace back to nowhere. Now days it is later.
They are simple, easy to maintain and easy to get ammo for in countries where military calibers are outlawed. Places like Mexico, parts of EU, etc. Also a 380 is no sloutch. I have heard some Russian SVR have carried it and KGB had coppies made in East Germany for them that were semi unmarked.
It's an outstandingly informative video, but I've had "don't let any part of yourself get in front of the barrel" beaten into my head since I was a kid, so that definitely got my heart rate up when he tested against the palm of his hand.
As somebody who got into guns through James Bond, whose dad is an English immigrant who was born the year of the first Bond movie, this intro made me smile. Reminds me of the time I played the James Bond theme on my Saxophone while my dad did his best James Bond "room clear from the belt" with an M&P40 Compact.

I’ve watched this video so many times. Finally got this very PPK earlier this year. It’s so cool. Considering the complaints I’ve seen, I expected a lot more recoil. It’s fine. Not uncomfortable at all. No skin injuries either. You just have to grip it properly and the extended beaver tail helps. Unless you just have giant bear paws for hands, you can master the grip with no lost skin.
What a wonderful stout little pistol. Late 80s, early 90s, a ppks was my summer carry while my hi-power was my winter carry. Still have the hi-power, miss the Walther. Nice review.
Marc----Why did you use different guns for the cold , vs , the warmer weather ? I am assuming that it has to do with the relative size of the guns , but, don`t know that . I do know that not all equipment functions equally well in cold weather .
Hi William, that's a good question. Living in Connecticut, the winters can be very cold. People tend to wear layers. Heavier garments make concealing full size firearms easier. Also, cartridges like .357mag, 45acp, 9mm have better penetrarion on heavy clothing than 38special from snubnosed revolvers, .380acp, 32acp or .22lr
In the summer time, where lighter clothing is worn, it's more difficult to conceal a handgun without "printing" through your clothing. Also, with most people wearing tee-shirt etc., penetration is much less of an issue.
Now that I live in Arizona, I carry a smaller handgun, mostly because of comfort and ease of concealment.

bought this a my first backup when I graduated the academy. later replaced with a baby glock to allow it to accept my duty mags. tactically a good decision but really missed the PPK....still in my inventory as i cannot seem to part with it. Thanks, Dock! great instruction from a respected voice from the past!

I had an Interarms Walther PPK/S in the mid-80s. Loved that little handgun. It would work with any ammo I chose to feed it, but one of the most accurate was a handload that a friend had given me with the Speer 88 gr hollowpoint, the "Flying Ashcan." I took a rabbit at about 25 yds with the Walther. Very accurate handgun for such a short barrel. I'm sorry today I got rid of it, but a guy had a three screw Blackhawk that he wanted to get rid of so I used the Walther to raise the funds to acquire the Blackhawk.
Tang was lengthened to prevent the “PPK slide bite” which was common on the smaller PPK frame. My stainless sat in an ankle holster for years as my LEO back up before migrating to my body armor pocket. Total of about 25 years. I retired her when I switched to my glock 43. My PPK was reliable as heck and accurate too, I just hated qualifying with her because of the slide bite. Love my Glock because of the light weight and more rounds.
Agreed. I carried a Browning Hi-Power for years. I eventually switched to a Glock 19 because it was lighter, a little shorter in the slide, and no external hammer to dig into me when sitting or bending.
Allen, this is one of the best gun videos I've ever seen and I watch many. You explained this pistol amazingly well. I learned something about a completely different gun which I own called the Bauer .25. It too has the little pin that sticks out the back and I never knew what this was for - until today! @@OldeEnglishOutfitters I am a great fan of the PPK. I was in law enforcement for 40+ years. It was my favorite back-up gun when working in uniform and my favorite off duty firearm when I wasn't carrying my 1911. Great informative video. Great information, no BS.
I’ve been to their store and have bought from this man many times. Their sales team is second to none when it comes to their knowledge of firearms. Most stores are staffed with flunkies who have no clue about their inventory, all they do is hand you a gun from the case and just stand there and look while you rack the slide or test the trigger.
Some people really hate this gun; claim recoil management and weight is awful...I very much agree with this reviewer weight makes it feel like a real gun and i put +P in mine so idk what some are experiencing. Thanks for the review.

I have a 'thing' for this pistol. I bought a PPK/sSabout 20 years ago. We didn't get along and I sold it back to the gun shop. I now want the PPK.

I agree, that is why my daily concealed carry pistol is the HK P7. Flat and safe to carry with a round in the chamber even with appendix carry. Nine rounds of 9mm that disappears under a polo shirt. Made in 1982, it functions like it was made last week.

Excellent review! Especially liked the intro! I have a 1941 PPK in .32 ACP my father brought back from WWII. Love it! Many of the communist bloc guns in 9x18 Makarov are essentially copies of the PPK design.
Yes, the original Walther factory in Ulm was in the Soviet Zone of occupied Germany, later East Germany.
Makarov has fewer parts though
I still have my Ex-West German (Berlin) Polizei pistol model Walther PP in 7.65mm (32 ACP). I purchased mine from the American Rod & Gun-club, Heidelberg Germany. When the German government switched from this pistol to various 9mm parabellum models. The guns were returned to Walther, serviced and released for private sale. I kick myself to this day for not purchasing more of them. I paid $180 dollars US and took it home, it is a true pleasure to carry and use and is extremely accurate.

Excellent review. The recoil is 32 is surprising and even more so in 380. I am always surprised at how accurate it is.

I'm a devout Waltherphile and own several Walther pistols. I have two PPK pistols, one a blued one, pre-1968 (same as my birth year) and one a roughly finished 1945 Dural framed model. Both are in .32 which works fine for me. I've carried a .380 PPK and later a .380 PPK/s quite a bit in my previous career and loved them. It's probably my age, familiarity, movies, and trigger time but there's just SOMETHING about a PPK that screams "well armed professional."
I don't carry mine as much given their age and now having smaller or less expensive to replace options, but they do make carry rotation often enough. Great review!

I`d like to see Walther come back out with the 9mm luger model it was`nt very popular in the day as .32 was the in thing for them in the day.
A 9mm version would be pretty popular.
There was never a 9mm luger version, the straight blow back design can't handle it. You are probably thinking of 9mm Ultra (9x18) which has similar ballistics to the 380 anyway.

@@earlcole4840 it gives a bit of a kick back and it was rubbing against my thumb knuckle and caused a cut. It finally just healed and I need to figure out how to not let that happen again.

My dad brought a Walther PP in .32 cal. back from WW-2. He gave it to me on my 16th birthday. I bought a stainless steel PPK 10 or 15 years ago and both guns are a lot of fun to shoot. Oh, dad didn't wrestle some kraut to the ground for the pistol; he arranged compassionate leave for a soldier in France whose wife was dying of T.B. The troop gave him the gun as a thank-you. Dad thought this might look too much like a bribe and went into his CO's tent to ask him about it, but the CO was playing with an identical PP, so dad just kept his. --Old Guy

I used one of these while I served in Northern Ireland , the 9mm short variant , it was very effective and easy to conceal . A mate of mine killed an IRA terrorist with one of these while he was trying to plant a bomb in a Hotel in Belfast . He put three rounds in him , pretty good shooting considering the circumstances . I liked this weapon it never let me down.
9mm short or "kurz" is just what you Europeans call our .380 acp. 😉
So this gun, with a smaller beaver tail is pretty much exactly what you carried. Very cool! Thank you for sharing your story, and kudos to your mate being so effective under pressure. I've always heard the Irish are excellent shots.
Iconic weapon, I’ve owned one for 35 years, recently switched to the Glock 42 as my carry weapon, like it due to it’s hammerless design and lack of a safety.
Many years ago my dad collected guns, had a black PPK and he had promised me that gun when he passed away. However, a few years before he did die, he asked if he could give the PPK to a friend of his who wanted one. Thinking dad would soon get another one, I agreed. The guy he gave it to then passed away two months later, could not get it back. The not too long after that, my dad died in 2003. Fast forward to 2014, my step dad in law had a silver PPK and he died that year and now I have his silver one. Nice gun for concealed carry. Love this video, learned a lot about the gun I was not aware of.
Great video. Good to see someone who can present information logically without constantly repeating themselves because they don’t know too much about their subject or public speaking. Had a 70s built PP in 380 until gun laws changed. I was forced to hand it in because my government believed that I was more likely to commit a crime with a short barrel pistol ( at 3.9 inches).I was however allowed to keep my 4 inch 357 S&W model 19?
I found the PP , obviously, larger, heavier but more controllable in 380 than a PPK. Beautifully made and finished.A true quality that is hard to find today.Still have the plastic box with the bits & pieces as a keepsake.
Great video as always. I've wanted a PPK for a long time but always thought they were a little pricey. I may have to buy one, that's the only way to get over the itch !

WOW, thanks for that story! You damaged the legend of the PPK being highly accurate and reliable. They cost approximately twice the price of modern .380 pistols like the Ruger LCP2 and Smith & Wesson MP Shield.
@@widehotep9257 I had one in 32ACP in the 80s. They were really cheap (I think I paid about £60 for mine) because the German police forces sold all theirs off when they went to 9mm and no security service wanted them because of the Princess Anne incident. I bought one because, hey, James Bond gun, right? Who wouldn't want one of them in the collection? I hardly ever used it though because it's too small to be accurate, 32ACP didn't qualify for most of the competitions I entered and, well, it actually wasn't pleasant to shoot as the review says, it's "snappy". Very light and easy to carry though. You can see why it appealed to plain clothes units.

@@widehotep9257 Not pistols or semi automatic rifles, no. Quite a few people shoot "carbine" versions of pistols, things like .22 versions of a 1911 with a long barrel (overall gun length has to be 24" minimum) that fit the regulations.
We don't, and never have, owned handguns for self defence here (except in Northern Ireland).
Almost infamous "everywhere else" too.. Hungary had the rights somehow based on the original Walther and Russian standards to build our own version with an aluminium!!! frame - which became the worst police pistol in history here!! Look up FEG PA-63 for reference. (There are some funny stories if you're interested).

Dear Walther, quit churning out stainless ones and make some black ones. I haven't EVER seen a black one in stores in my area, they're always stainless which isn't what Bond had. I know Bond's was blued, but close enough. This new finish is better imo.
I'm in the UK, where civilian ownership of a pistol is illegal yet totally enjoyed this video.

Regardless of the pandemic buying. This sidearm has been difficult to find at my local dealer. ,22LR no problem ,but .380 has been a unicorn.
I had the original PPK 1966 germain 32ACP gun, very accurate, smooth trigger its only drawback weigth, loved it!

True. A handful of films in the seventies and eighties portrayed the .380 as a pea shooter; with a few exceptions - for example Taxi Driver "That thirty eight, that's a fine gun.. ..got a really nice action to it and a heck of a wallop."
You didn't hear it in a James Bond movie. In the novel and the movie , OO7 has his firearm (a Beretta .25 [ACP, presumably]) replaced with a Walther PPk. "Major Boothroyd" is introduced as 'armourer'. (Of note, there was a man named Geoffrey (pronounced "Jeff-rey", not "Gee-off-rey") Boothroyd, not a Major, who was a British firearms student. Fleming wrote him into the novel (promoted him to Major in the process) as Boothroyd was the person who convinced Fleming an agent like Bond should not carry a .25.
It was Major Boothroyd who presented Bond with the PPk, and says it is chambered for 7.65mm (same as .32 ACP) and makes the comment about '...delivery like a brick through a plate glass window..." NOT .380 ACP.
So says the fiction. I differ somewhat.
@@OldManMontgomery That is one hell of a correction, that being said, I’m a fan of the 007 movies. Anyone who’s a fan of James Bond and/or firearms knows the line, sometimes we get it mixed up. I know it was the .32ACP, but I believed it would be humorous to add it here for the .380, since that is the caliber being discussed. I find “corrections” like this humorous, and if you’re being humorous then you got me, but if you’re serious, then you missed the point entirely. I appreciate the correction, but this isn’t Wikipedia, it’s UA-cam. “Somewhere” was the clue in my comment that it was satire, and I did hear it in Dr. No.

Very good presentation. I bought a Hungarian copy of this gun by FEG imported by KBI in the mid-90s from the Dragon Man in Colorado Springs. It was the aluminum-frame 4" barrel equivalent to the Walther PP. Functions well. I was fortunate enough to find checkered wood grips and an extra magazine. I like it a lot.
Great video, Bought a new stainless version from a dealer last December. Still haven’t fired it.
