  • The Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamils and Moors share many genetic similarities, despite popular belief to the contrary. A four-year-long study by the University of Colombo and Genetech, a molecular science facility, recently made this observation about Sri Lanka’s major ethnicities, while researching something completely different.

I love the end message: that our genes and DNA have mixed so much that there are no more differences between our people. It proves that we are one at a molecular and DNA level. Such a valuable message and such valuable research. I do, however, have issues with this research... first off, Indian Tamils aren't recognized as one of the four main ethnicities of Sri Lanka. Indian Tamils are Indian. Sri Lankan Tamils are Sri Lankan. Born, generation after generation in Sri Lanka. Burghers are one of the four main ethnic groups, of Portuguese and Dutch descent and this research has not taken them into account at all. I also have issues with the number of sampling - 838 blood samples? from approximately 27 million people? How did you arrive to conclude that 838 blood samples is enough to validate the genetic DNA study of our 4 main ethnic groups, one of which you left out? And how were the blood samples divided amongst the 3 main ethnic groups, also to reiterate that you left out one major ethnic group? My next issue is the lack of research in this case study towards understanding the genetic origins of Sri Lankans. To do this, it would have been interesting to see how they incorporated research into our Native people, or the First People of Lanka, the Veddhi community. Lets not forget that before Vijaya arrived in Lanka and claimed to be king, Kuveni was the reigning monarch of the country. It would be interesting to trace the DNA origins of our first folk which is hidden in the lesser known castes of lankan people that has not been accounted for in this research. Its great to see Sri Lankans doing research! Brilliant! However this research has left some big gaps which I hope the stakeholders present here will take on in the future.

So basically Indians were converted to Islam whenever Islam came to India (i guesss brought in by the arabs), and they eventually moved down to SL along with other indians who eventually formed the Sinhalese race. But genetically both are the same. Then the Indian Tamils from a different genetic group also came to SL. Then the colonizer’s invaded and mixed with whoever they pleased and created the Burgher community.

It would be helpful to read my research book, The Gentiles, A History of Sri Lanka 1505-1833. I did my research at Oxford University in UK. I found out that my ancestral Father was a Dutchman named Rickloff Michael Van Goens who conquered Northern Sri Lanka from the Portuguese in 1658. My mother's father's name was Van der Koen. We spoke Tamil language and became Tamils. The Portuguese began settling in Sri Lanka in 1505. The Dutch began their settlement in 1658. In those days people died when they tried to return by ships. They fell ill and died. The British who began their settlement in 1833, were able to return in modern ships. The cast system was created by the Portuguese. Vellalar ( Vellai- Alar) actually means white rulers. Vellai is white and Alar is rulers. The upper class Portuguese brought their own workers like Laundry man, Barber and so on from Portugal. My book tells about how cast society was formed during Portuguese rule.

The genetics of the Moors could be Indo-European, if one considers that their origin was, partially, from the Persia (Iran) rather than either India or Arabia. Linguistic evidence would be complicated because the mother tongue of the Moors is Tamil. If the genetic origin of the Moors is India, it is more likely that Moorish ancestors were originally from southern, as opposed to northern India. If one considers the cultural practices of the Moors, they are essentially Tamils whose ancestors had converted to Islam. It is very unlikely that the Sri Lankan Moors are from the same gene pools as Arabs or Persians.
In this context, it would be worth examining the Maldive Islanders' genetics, as well as the origin of the Maldive language, known as "Divehi". The language of the Maldives, Divehi, is closely related to Sinhala, as opposed to Tamil. Islamic terminology in Divehi is, without a doubt, derived from Farsi (Persian), rather than Arabic. Sinhala, Farsi and Divehi are all Indo-European languages.

No bullsh*t analysis points on Sinhalese and Sri Lankan genetics. 12 years experience in population genetics research analysis and some experience when it comes to caste groups.
Only Bathgama, Deva (Wahumpura) and Govigama (especially central region ones and few coastal ones) are GENUINE Sinhalese (the paternal descendants of the builders of Ruwanweli-Saaya and Sigiriya and of kings like Pandukhabaya, Dutugemunu, Vijayabahu, Valagambha). The others groups (Durava, Salagama and Karava) are South Indian Tamil migrants post 13th Century and are just Sinhalese speakers with Tamil genes. That is why the Salagama, Durava and Karava are more prevalent in coastal areas (due to later arrival) and even have more Portuguese names and Catholic adherents as well because they were exposed more to Portuguese and other Europeans (due to proximity to the Sea). Many of them were also brought as mercenaries from South India by Portuguese to fight Sinhalese. I, personally, am a Sinhalese who is NOT from either Bathgama, Deva or Central Govigama so you cannot call me BIASED when stating these facts. I even have a Portuguese last name which is not found (or quite rare) among Bathgama, Central Govi or Deva. I also have relations from coastal regions.
Original Sinhalese have more West-Bengali genes (Vanga became Bengal later by name) and some Veddah type Australoid genes and the present day Sinhalese have 72% Bengali genes. So Mahavansha was telling the truth all this time after all. The native aboriginal Yakka genes are highest among the VEDDAH people as they are the physically closest people to the Balangoda man. Yakka genes are also present at a little lesser extent among the Bathgama caste. But much lower compared to the level in Veddahs. Some genetic tests say that Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamils are similar, but that is by mt-DNA which is comparatively more similar all across South Asia. There are genetically similar Afghans to Tamils if only mt-DNA is considered. y-DNA and Autosomal admixture is the defining measure for South Asia. Also due to assimilation of Tamils and South Indians like Durava, Karava and Salagama there will be an influx of South Indian genes in to Sinhalese via these 3 groups further complicating the picture. Also there are very old Sinhala origin Tamils among Sri Lankan Tamils like Koviar (derived from Govia) who further complicate the picture. Another reason for Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamils and Moors being similar is because after they started living in Sri Lanka the SL Tamils and Moors mixed with the Sinhalese. According to histrorical legands Sinhalese are descendents from Indo Aryans .Their languge, traditions, skin colours and cloths are much more similler to Kerala and nothern part of the India .Indo aryans comes from Aryans who first established around area currently knowns as Iran ,
So this support the fact that Sinhalse are genatically close to moors than Tamils . According to historic data we can belive Tamils were the navtive people in India but due to Indo aryans who crossed the Hindukush mountain and came to India (invade) . Your argument is wrong." Sinhalese " never "came" from anywhere else. You don't find an ethnic group called Sinhalese anywhere outside this island. Sinhalese have evolved their culture and language during last 2500 years .Sinhalese are a mixture of Hunter gatherers, dravidians and aryans. Even Sinhala language has words from all 3 language roots. So " Tamils came first" is illogical statement here. Because ancestors of Sinhalese also were some of dravidians. Other thing is Sri lankan Tamil language and culture are not significantly different from Indian Tamil language and culture. This means current sri Lankan tamil speakers should be recently migrated Tamils from india. Earlier migrants have developed the Sinhalese culture.

I hate when science is used to push a political message. These DNA tests were clearly designed to produce the desired conclusion.
Most Sri Lankans are mixed for sure, but so are most Indians. This doesn't mean you can't distinguish them by DNA.
If you can visually notice different genetics, DNA tests can definitely detect those differences lol
Singhalese are definitely mixed. I have seen ones that look like North Indians, South Indian and others that look like Aborigines.
If your DNA tests is saying we're indistinguishable, it's a joke of a DNA test.
Also, not all Muslims in Sri Lanka are Moors. Most are clearly Tamil converts.

Bro most Sri Lankan Muslims are visually South Asian. "Moors" aren't even an ethic group. Originally they were North African, but various other ethnic groups joined them over the centuries as soldiers or marriage.
The reason for most SL Muslims speaking Tamil and most being Tamil converts is because Tamils historically lived in the costal areas where the Muslims came to trade. So they ended up settling in those majority Tamil places and started speaking Tamil and converting locals and mixing with them.
It's the same thing in most Muslim countries. Most are not Arab, even if they speak Arabic. For example, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Syria, Palastine etc Their ancestors converted to Islam and mixed with Arabs.
BTW don't mix ethnicity with religion or sect. Moors are only considered as a distinct ethnic group inside Sri Lanka. Historically and scientifically, they are a mix of lots of ethnicities.
