It’s truly fascinating to listen to Dr. Zameer Careem. Honestly I think I could listen to him for hours and never tire. It’s also fascinating to learn how various cultures interact and evolve through time whether in Ceylon/Sri Lanka or anywhere in the world. While on the one hand the idea that all humanity on the planet are ONE is a reassuring thought, learning of the diversity of peoples and cultures is an equally uplifting notion. Thank you Dr. Zameer Careem for shedding so much light on this and thank you Newsfirst for bringing this to us.
Enjoyed another interesting episode. Didn't realise there are so many books written on the subject. So much to know. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the next.
Dr. Zameer Careem has once again shared an interesting piece of history, making us realize how stupid and useless caste is, and how Rodiyas endured hardships as a result of this worthless stratification. What amazes me is that some ignorant racists find flaws in this young man's facts, despite the fact that he cited his sources and was able to deliver facts in such an erudite and eloquent manner. He never stated that a specific group, whether Sinhalese, Tamils, Burghers, or others, harmed the Rodiyas; he only stated that the Rodiyas were ostracized, barred from drawing water from non-rodiya wells, their shadow was considered defiled, and that they were marginalized and subjected to gruesome tortures, and these are facts recorded, and he also touched on legends associated with Rodiyas. He kept emphasing on the "beauty and mystique" of rodiya women, because he wants the Rodiyas to be recognised for something unique, rather than being labelled "untouchable" and "outcastes". Why don't some idiots understand the meaning of the word "legend" and continue to argue on the basis of religion, caste, and ethnic group? I discovered on Dr. Careem's Facebook page that he advocates for the rights of the underprivileged and fights caste stratification, ethnocentrism, religiocentrism, and social strife based on caste system. It is heartbreaking to see a man of such caliber and repute being attacked by racists simply because he addressed the issue of "untouchability." Allow this young man to live without falsely accusing him.
Lowest castes and Untouchable castes actually provided women for the creation of the Burgher peoples. Many Europeans realized that the lowest caste women were the easiest to capture and the Burgher races of Sri Lanka were born by union between Euro men and low caste/untouchable women.
How interested and fascinating! I would love to have Dr Careem as my teacher in all history classes. He is very eloquent and knowledgeable! Has he write any books? I am reading When Memory Dies by A. Sivanandan and all this info is a great background. By the way, I am from another little island in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, so all this learning is new and enriching to me. Thank you!
Dr Zameer Careem, an erudite explanation, hats off to you. Bravo. Anyway, you seem to have been smitten by Rodiya beauty!!! please tell me where will I find the community, I would love to learn a lot from them, and experience their culture. I am sure Sir Thomas Maitland and Dr Careem have seen something, which half the population are yet to explore, and experience, just kidding

First of all there is no relationship between caste and Buddhism.Sri lanka is neighbhour country of indi So from ancient India politicaly, economicaly, Socialy impact for make sri lankan civilizations, So before Mahida tero came in sri lanka there were Bhrannamanism, So 4 chaturwarna Some upper caste were ministers of indian kings, So untouchable concept also very famous. But high different between law caste and high caste can see after kandyan period, some were untouchable, Some were not allowed to cover uper body(women ) So by time they bring caste to buddhism too, That is just about behavior of some monks from high caste
Adai modaiya, Tamils are the first people in Sri Lanka and all others come from outside. Sinhala came to Sri Lanka 1200 years ago from North India. Thamils originally from the lost continent called Kumari Kandam situated south of Sri Lanka which submerged under sea 10000 years ago. And in fact, they are the first people of the Earth. The world will speak about that in near future.
Just because Sinhala people are majority, doesn’t mean, they belong to Sri Lanka. For example. White people are majority in America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand but it doesn’t mean these are their countries. all these countries belong to Native people ( Red Indians). Just like that.
By that logic aren't we all don't belong in anywhere in this world except Africa..? Sinhalese migrated more than 2500 years ago and no invasions were made while americans or the europeans settled in America just few hundred years ago.. sinhalese belongs to sri lanka.. there are no other places sinhalese belongs to..
Yes before sinhalese there were Yakkas,Naga tribes. They are natives of Sri lanka. They also have relationship with Nepali and north east indian tribes, And 70000 years back india and sri is not separated so lots of people come and go who speak different languages, Some may speak priminitive form modern dravidian languages, Because of that some think Tamil come first, But they came after 10th century, Settle in srilanka
Zameer Careem is making up stories.... First of all caste among Sinhalese is not religiously sanctioned, its more or less a social stratification based on occupation - so this talk about shadow falling and drawing water from the same well in villages etc does not apply to Sinhalese social practices, as it is a Hindu religious notion. I do not think that Sinhalese even know what Hinduism says about caste interactions. Besides how can the Rodiyas draw water in village wells, when they are already from "time immemorial" banished to the forests? So what Careem says does not make sense at all. Careem has read about caste discrimination in Hindu society and is trying to apply that to the Sinhalese society. When Careem himself narrates the origin myths of the Rodiyas as historical truths, he cannot connect the dots to find out why the the Rodiyas are so-called outcastes, but quite busy trying to make the Rodiya situation into a Hindu caste system issue..... IQ is something most of these Dr.s lack.
@Punchi Point. Unfortunately, you are absolutely wrong. Firstly, Dr Zameer Careem was spot on, and all his points are absolutely right, WITHOUT AN IOTA OF DOUBT. All his facts have been mentioned in the books and articles he cited, and right at the beginning, he says clearly that there are several legends associated with them, one of it being that they were Hindus when they first arrived. Read Sir James Emerson Tennent's book, "Ceylon: An Account of the Island Physical, Historical and..." (1859; pages 187-192 "Rodiyas") which speaks about all these horrors endured by Rodiyas, and Simon Cassie Chetty's "Account of the Rodiyas, with a specimen of their language" (pages 171 to 181, Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, Ceylon Branch, 1849). Read all the books and articles cited by Dr Careem, from Robert Knox to MD Raghavan, almost every book, paper written during the Colonial period have mentioned stories about untouchability in Ceylon, and story about shadow being considered defile, and blood curdling accounts of torture and abuse have been mentioned by them, and by the way these are first hand sources. Dr Careem, in my opinion is one of the finest historians in the country and has been very considerate and hasn't related some of the worst stories. SO STOP ACCUSING SOMEONE WHEN YOU ARE IGNORANT AND WHEN YOU LACK CLEAR EVIDENCE. He is right, and this clearly proves that there are viewers like you, who don't bother to look up for facts, before pointing fingers at someone.
@ounchipoint Dr Careem, does NOT fabricate stories on National television, and this is his 19th episode in a row. How can you accuse a prolific academic, without any evidences, while he has clearly pointed out facts about their mysterious origins. I am not an academic, but even I understood the fact that Rodi's were outcast, look for the meaning of the word and understand that they are believed to have come from India, just like most communities, and even in India, the untouchables "Dalits" convert to Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and other religions to avoid discrimination based on caste.
@@maashaniffaron4673 The evidence is there in his most prejudiced talk - while referring to books he himself calls prejudiced writings he is just parroting well known stuff, with a twist of his own. The reason the Sinhalese kept away from the Rodiyas is not because of some Hindu religious beliefs but because Sinhalese were scared of the Rodiyas. It goes without saying if the Rodiyas were thought to be cannibalistic and having the cult of Ratnawali, where human flesh is offered, people would be scared.
@@punchipoint8457 So according to you they were killed when they entered Kandyan Kingdom, subjected to such horrors and were forbidden from covering their bosom, and all those tortures because the Sinhalese were frightened? Buddhism doesn't have a concept of Caste, and its something based on Hinduism, as rightly pointed out by Dr Careem. Wasn't Kuveni also a cannibal, so why weren't the Veddas treated the same way. I lived for many years in Thailand, and even there the concept of social hierarchy was introduced from India, by Hindu monarchs. Dr Careem has mentioned that not all Rodiyas believed they were descended from Navaratnavali, so what about those who claim lineage from those who came with the retinue of Sangamitta to Sri Lanka, were the Sinhalese scared of that section as well. He isn't prejudiced, if he was then he won't try to raise awarenss on all these communities, and he used the term "prejudiced" when he spoke about illicit affairs and incest. And by the way don't try to act like the flag bearer of Sinhala community, as you are not. Use "I" don't drag an entire community without a reason. My wife and mother are both Sinhalese, so please don;t ever try to be the representative of the community.
@@chinthakaabeysinghe6758 What's the purpose of this talk? What history has he taught you? He is so prejudiced that he cannot hide it even. All farmers were required to allocate a portion of their harvest to the Rodiyas, so they got food that way too. No mention of that. I have browsed all those books some time back, to check references in some other context. But I cannot remember where it says about wells. Do you have the exact reference to this? The way this man Careem presents the issues on TV is unacceptable. The Sinhalese do not have the religious basis to practice untouchability in the way this Careem is getting at. Careem is trying to project Hindu caste practices on the Sinhalese social practices - which all scholars have rejected. Besides, the Rodiyas must be let to live their lives without this kind of negative talks and projections. There's simply no purpose in this kind of repetitive talks - see how many times he is talking about the supposed good looks of Rodiyas? Is that necessary? Then a picture of a very ugly fat woman is shown supposed to be a beautiful Rodi woman. Anyways what evidence do you need? The evidence is all there in his talk.

It happened both ways. Upper caste women were married to some europeans and lower caste hsve sadly been raped by some european.
