I know the focus is just on Lotus-named cards, but shoutout to Garth One-Eye masquerading as another Lotus card that you gotta jump through hoops to achieve (similar to the hoop of forcing suspend counters). ✨
I decided to cut Garth out since it didn't fit literally the Lotus name (otherwise you start wondering about Crop Rotation, SLD Cultivate, etc, where they're in the flavor text) but HM to Garth for sure. :)
I wish WOTC would print the tokens for Garth as this would be a perfect way (besides re-issuing another Collectors set) to reprint reserved list cards. Ones that are permanents anyways. I would like to build a powered cube someday and I would rather use authentic cards instead of buying fakes or creating proxies. I've owned 3 Black Lotus etc and nearly everything else before I traded my collection. I would like to re-create and reintroduce that feeling in a cube with friends I played with in the 90's and wish for our kids and friends who don't have the same experience of playing kitchen top paper Black Lotus. The card is special, but the reserved list has scaled it to an absurd level that to me misses the point. Because what is more special is the experience in game play from the card. And even if I win the lottery (which I never play) I'm not going to re-acquire the Power-9 to play or even invest in for that matter. That makes me feel cheated and it makes me feel other players who never played with them are cheated as well.
My favorite one is Lost Vale, the flipside of Dowsing Dagger. Weather you consider it a reference to Lotus Vale or not, I think it's criminally underplayed in creature based mid power edh decks.
Lotus and moxes are just so iconic in magic. Each time a new one is spoiled I'm always so excited to see what kind og take has taken on such iconic cards :D
My favorite lotus will probably always be the one I opened first: Lotus Petal. It's a fun card that really needs to be reprinted more. Not in standard because it is to strong for that, but it wouldn't be out of place in the next Commander Legends at, say, uncommon.
@Doom Posterior No, the reserve list is directly harmful to the eternal formats and was a knee jerk reaction to the complaints of a small minority, most of which never played the game to begin with. It needs to be removed.
@@Fausto_4841 The first one was a home run, the second one was fun to draft and had a lot of fun new tools for commander decks, but it lacked the one crucial detail that the first had: A lot of good old reprints for the format. If you've read MaRo's latest article he admits that it was a mistake on their part to do Battle for Baldur's Gate the way they did it (I personally think people would have been a lot less upset if the set had around 50 odd good older cards that needed a reprint for the format), and that they have learned from that mistake. The set was still a success and people enjoyed it, they just didn't feel like it was a Commander Legends set because it didn't deliver on what people expected it to do: Much needed reprints for the format. Hopefully they will remember this lesson for the next Commander Legends set.
Could Jeweled lotus have had a requirement of only being used to cast a commander over a certain MV? That would have been narrow and fair, and Still exciting.
Think about it, set the MV to 3 and now its a turn 1 commander, set it to 6 and it makes a balanced card broken, set it to 9 and there’s no targets but the more cards added the more likely it does something absurd. The problem isn’t the commander restriction. The problem is it costs 0 mana. The problem is it makes more mana than it costs. A fairer version to make big commanders playable would be to make it cost 1 mana to play and reduce casting cost of a colored commander by 3 colorless. Or to remove commander tax on commanders with mv greater than 3. Still costing 1 mv itself.
@@jcstaff1007 Considering we have so many options to accelerate our mana, you know... Commander IS the place that has Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Mox Opal, Mox Diamond, Mox Amber, Chrome Mox, Lotus Petal... I don't think Jeweled Lotus is that much of an issue. It's strong and can sometimes be the reason someone runs away with the game... But you can say that about Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vau... You get the picture. That being said, restricting the card to high cost commanders (like 6 plus) would genuinely balance the card. Commanders are typically linchpins or the engines of decks, so restricting yourself to such a high cost makes it much harder for your deck to come online. Risking early removal by accelerating it out so quickly could burn you out of the game.
Would have expected a shoutout to Lion‘s Eye Diamond, as even though it doesn’t literally have „Lotus“ in its name it is a black lotus with some extra rules
To a Magic fan, the word "lotus" means a lot, to the average person it probably doesn't mean much although "black lotus" has certainly leaked into pop culture.
What's your point? You can't just type words you've heard before, you have to go somewhere with what you're saying. You might as well have just typed in "penguin" and nothing else.
It feels like that card should cost 3 colorless phyrexian mana and be just black lotus in every other aspect. It feels right but at the same time it would be an absurd card, more so in death's shadow.
@@friki1282 they'd have to Compleat it in some way, making the card dramatically worse if you pay the life. Every time I see a video about Lotus, I always wonder about the one sneaky "not lotus but actually lotus," Lion's Eye Diamond. Sure it's not called a lotus, but it sure reads like one in a trenchcoat.
Mirrored Lotus was insane in one of the Mystery Booster drafts I played. It was a deck that ran Rosheen Meanderer, Daretti, Scrap Savant, Torment of Hailfire, Kaervek's Torch, and Planequake (another neat playtest card). The downside of giving your opponent a lotus isn't that bad when it fuels an extra 3 into an X spell that will kill them the turn you play it.
I always took the back side of Dowsing Dagger/Lost Vale as a reference to Lotus Vale, as both are lands that tap for three mana and the names are very similar. I guess in the family analogy this is the second cousin twice removed.
on Jeweled lotus: "I'm not a fan. it speeds up the format too much". OMG YOU MADE THIS CARD. YOU WERE THE LEAD DESIGNER. YOU WERE TOLD THIS EXACT THING BY JLK BEFORE PRINTING IT
I love in-game legacies like these. My gf opened a foil Nyx lotus and a normal one in the prerelease kit that I bought for her. I told her if she just gave me the foil one, she wouldn’t have to pay me back. She jokes about me taking her lotus, but her normal one hasn’t moved into a deck years later, so she’s not missing it. But as someone who started with M13, my favorite is gilded lotus. I apparently traded my copy away because I couldn’t find it, so I bought a few so I could run them. I prefer the Dominaria art, but I like my M13 set logo.
I loved that Jeweled Lotus was printed. it’s not game breaking. it speeds the pace of a 4 player format perfectly and it baits your opponents to use their spells rather than hide them for protecting their board state. I’d rather use a slough 1 to 2 drop removal spells.
I'd love to see a Jeweled Lotus variant that is specifically for powering out expensive commanders. It might read something like "gives you x mana where x is the mana value of your commander minus 3"
My opinion on Jeweled Lotus? It didn't break the format, but too many generically great cards like it can, so I'm glad to hear you say it's not the sort of design you're interested in making more of. If the temptation to make more cards like it should ever arise, please just reprint. While trusted playgroups and venues where people have multiple decks at different power levels helps, I also want to look out for the new-to-Commander LGS experience too.
I play Nyx Lotus in my Klothys Devotion Brawl deck. The only problem it has is that it only helps you cast cards of the color you already have a high devotion for, whereas gilded lotus can ramp you into a different color
I recognize that Fester Addams estranged uncle pic! That was when they just moved into the mansion and Debbie was making him where that blonde wig right? God, that was a good movie. We watch it every turkey day.
I don't play Jeweled Lotus, it's too swingy and just not my style....but when it eventually gets reprinted, can it PLEASE get one of those art cards as well? For a card i don't own, it might be my absolute favorite art in the game, it's ridiculously pretty, and i am planning on collecting the art in different forms. :)
I still think Jeweled Lotus was a misstake. If it wasn't as rare as it is, it would to much more non-games. I do find the Doubling Cube / Jeweled Lotus deck hilarious. I always loved the art on Lotus Vale and Lotus Blossom. Sadly they're just too risky to run.
Kinda funny you used Najeela as the example with Jeweled lotus, because I did exactly that in a recent game. Turn 1 Najeela into turn 3 Winota. And because Najeela conveniently makes non-human tokens, I was already getting Winota triggers on turn 3.
I enjoy jeweled lotus. I play a lot of mediocre high mana value commanders (and not in green) so drawing the lotus is a lot of fun to speed out my Bruna, the Fading Light or whatever. I am not a fan of playing against it in higher power situations though. It certainly adds gas.
I have a few thoughts on Lotuses. The most simple being: I need to get some Lotus petals. While Legacy is hard to get into because of the reserved list, Lotus petals are just a nice card to have. One day I hope it sees a reprint beyond Mystery Booster, so more people can enjoy them too. The second is a card you didn't mention here (as it didn't directly tie into lotus theming:) Dowsing Dagger. It was the first rare I ever opened in a booster pack, and its transformation into Lost Vale is a direct callback to Lotus Vale. The reference was lost on me at first, but when I learned about it, I thought it was still cool, if hard to use. Maybe it'll find a home in a lower powered Commander deck. Third: Mox Lotus. Is that a reference to James Cameron's Titanic I see in the artwork? Finally: Lotus is such a powerful imagery, that when I commissioned custom artwork for a playmat, it was one of my characters plucking a petal off a Lotus flower in a swamp, as any MtG player would know exactly what it was evoking.
When nyx lotus came out I thought it was so cool because of the devotion aspect of it. Plus I started playing magic in the original theros block so theros beyond death was awesome all together for me (:
Could you elaborate on something I've never fully understood. Why cards in revised (with a second white border printing) are on the Reserved List? It never made sense to me with the idea that the RL is about not reprinting. Anything that had been already shouldn't have been included imo, could you talk about why they were?
@@cugeltheclever2957 Thats actually a good comparison though, and part of my confusion. Considering no Chronicles cards are RL. Why wasnt the same true of Revised?
And Lotus Field works great with Strict Proctor in Historic and Explorer! It's nice to have the name still used for powerful mana ramping/cheating to this day.
The wildest deck I’ve ever seen used Gilded Lotus, Voltaic Key, Memnarch and Tron Lands to steal your board state one card at a time until you found your face being beaten in by your own permanents and, or course, Memnarch himself. I now know what Glissa must have felt like.
I started playing magic again in 2020 after 15 years or so, first pack I opened had a jeweled lotus. Had no idea what commander even was, stuffed it in box and forgot about it. Now that I play commander, I still only ever use it in a deck that has a 6+ cmc commander. I dont think its that earth shattering, the game is so fast these days that if you want to play higher cmc commanders, you almost have to have one if you want to use a deck that actually uses the commander. But my group is otherwise pretty casual, so that might just be me feeling that way.
Im trying to collect all the lotus cards, only missing black, blacker, mox, blossom, guardian and jeweled. All of them are beautiful. Its been hard to build a deck with all the lotus cards i have because they all have different applications and vale or field in an opening hand can be backbreaking in certain circumstances lol. Just glad i have a decent chunk of the lotus legacy to play with!
15:22 Jeweled Lotus would 100% be a staple in every deck if it weren't for its insane price tag. It's easily the most broken Lotus printed since the original.
Jeweled Lotus is a fine card. Many games of commander come down to archenemy at some point and it often easier to correct if that advantage is easily identified at the beginning so players can play aground the situation rather than something just as powerful but less obvious like burgeoning turn one. Burgeoning turn one is actually more powerful an that card has been printed in precon decks.
Proposal to get around the Reserved List and help Vintage be more accessible: Ink Lotus {0} Artifact A starting deck cannot contain a card named Ink Lotus and a card named Black Lotus {T}, Sacrifice Ink Lotus: Add {C}{C} and a mana of any color to your mana pool.
I know it probably wouldn't have been as resonant or close to the original if this were the case, but, was there any thought given to adding a clause to Jeweled Lotus saying that you could only use the mana on Commanders with a given mana value or greater? Not sure what would have even been a good cut-off point. 4? 5? 6?
Mox lotus should get a reprint in Unfinity without an acorn. At 15 mana, it's not a big deal to get infinity mana. Sure, you can cheat it in, but there are plenty of 2 card combos that make infinity mana anyways
All it would have took was to let Lotus Guardian tap for 3 and people would probably play it in some capacity, especially in commander. People already play Gilded Lotus at 5 CMC because it taps for 3 so a more modern designed Lotus Guardian could work if it also did that and maybe also had vigilance to justify a high CMC dork
I think "tear this card into pieces" might be the most hated mechanic ever printed. Maybe it's funny to read once, but I would always rather lose the game than destroy my own cards.
Lotus Dream mana cost: phyrexian black Phyrexian black Enchantment tap: Add 3 mana of any one color. Reveal the top card of your library, you lose life equal to its converted mana cost. Exile that card. RARITY: MYTHIC SET M 30TH
haven't yet seen jeweled lotus used to power out a commander super early which didn't end up with that commander catching a removal before that players next turn.
Good afternoon Gavin. I love the lotuses. But I think charms are still my favorite. Yet the master piece mox opal is my favorite art In MTG. Jeweled lotus is fine I see most use it to get one 1 reduced cost and a tax pay.
I'm pretty sure Mark Rosewater mentioned in one of this articles that they decided to name the card Lotus Cobra to justify printing it at mythic (instead of rare), and because of that, I really resent the name.
Would a lotus that sacrifices to untap 3 lands ever be viable? That way it only becomes usable after a certain amount of turns, but it still has that burst potential without being a necessarily dead card late game
i like jeweled lotus because i opened it in my first pack in my draft booster box of commander legends. I am not particularly lucky with boosters so this was a really memorable experience.
Thanks for the video Gavin, I also love the Gilded Lotus and think Nyx is under represented. And, hey, look, I know these comments get read and I think this is healthy feedback. I didn't like 2x2. As an average player, in a rural area with only about 4 LGS in a 30 mile radius of me, I saw no Drafts. My favorite card shop sold out in 1 hour, and was HOPING to be able to get a couple of Collector boxes in a week or two. The "Draft" environment is non-existent. All that's left as far as I'm concerned for this set, is Re-Selling. The secondary market has blitzed the product, and it's going to trickle out over the course of time. I don't have the finances to enjoy a draft of this. The Re-prints that we REALLY needed are all Mythic, and are not really influencing the environment for card prices due to their inherent rarity. The 2X2 release has basically pushed me to decide that Proxies are the healthiest way to buy Magic cards at this point, and I never thought that in the past. And I'm hoping that the Mother Ship can put out products that changes my mind back in the future, but right now it doesn't feel that way. Oh, and please, for the love of Urza, reprint Edgar Markov. Even as just a List entry. He's never going away, so please just make him more affordable? Or I'll just add him to my list of Proxies to have printed.
I love jeweled lotus. I've played hundreds of games since it's release and it's never gotten the table killed though it does speed up the game. I actually enjoyed faster games. Between 15 to 30 minutes so I don't mind the speed of the card.

@@cugeltheclever2957 Thats actually a good comparison though, and part of my confusion. Considering no Chronicles cards are RL. Why wasnt the same true of Revised?
Hahaha, "What can a Gleemax cost, Michael?"
Oohh, poor Dowsing Dagger. The unremembered lotus.
Now we need the lotus ring analysis
I had the exact same experience with lotus guardian as a kid.
I now it was already said, but Dowsing Dagger/Lost Vale may not have Lotus in the name, but it does feel very much like it is just sneaking in there.
Proposal to get around the Reserved List and help Vintage be more accessible:
Ink Lotus {0}
Artifact
A starting deck cannot contain a card named Ink Lotus and a card named Black Lotus
{T}, Sacrifice Ink Lotus: Add {C}{C} and a mana of any color to your mana pool.
I know it probably wouldn't have been as resonant or close to the original if this were the case, but, was there any thought given to adding a clause to Jeweled Lotus saying that you could only use the mana on Commanders with a given mana value or greater? Not sure what would have even been a good cut-off point. 4? 5? 6?
Why didn’t you mention Lions Eye Diamond, I understand it doesn’t have lotus in it’s name but it is still clearly a riff on black lotus.
it’s like you’ve never bought a banana before! 😂😂😂
Well to be fair when hearing "lotus" out of context my mind jumps to space mom
This was the best episode yet
Im happy that you agree with community about jewelled lotus. I own one and I play cedh but I would have it banned in a second if I could
Mox lotus should get a reprint in Unfinity without an acorn. At 15 mana, it's not a big deal to get infinity mana. Sure, you can cheat it in, but there are plenty of 2 card combos that make infinity mana anyways
Print Jeweled Lotus more than once and you would see its impact.
*Looks at "Commander Legends 2" and snickers*
Imagine we have a lotus artifact type
Drinking game: take a drink whenever Gavin says "Lotus."
I wonder if this means we'll be seeing a new Lotus sometime soon... 🤔
It's such a Mark Rosewater thing to do.
The tear up mechanic is printed here to refer to a moment in the game's very early history.
Yep, dont enjoy the cards the way theyre meant to be played. Keep holding on to junk
Now we just need to wait for the Alchemy Lotus a Arena only card that you remove from your collection each time it is used
Lotus Dream mana cost: phyrexian black
Phyrexian black
Enchantment
tap: Add 3 mana of any one color.
Reveal the top card of your library, you lose life equal to its converted mana cost.
Exile that card.
RARITY: MYTHIC
SET M 30TH
haven't yet seen jeweled lotus used to power out a commander super early which didn't end up with that commander catching a removal before that players next turn.
Epiphany! I will now go out and acquire a Lotus Guardian! It's perfectly fitting for my Raggadragga deck. It double dips in flavour! @_@
Good afternoon Gavin. I love the lotuses. But I think charms are still my favorite. Yet the master piece mox opal is my favorite art In MTG. Jeweled lotus is fine I see most use it to get one 1 reduced cost and a tax pay.
Surprised Garth wasn't mentioned for a sec in this. Hoping we get another goofy Lotus in Unfinity to see how R&D pulls it off
I'm pretty sure Mark Rosewater mentioned in one of this articles that they decided to name the card Lotus Cobra to justify printing it at mythic (instead of rare), and because of that, I really resent the name.
Would a lotus that sacrifices to untap 3 lands ever be viable? That way it only becomes usable after a certain amount of turns, but it still has that burst potential without being a necessarily dead card late game
"Jeweled Lotus isn't that good. You have to sacrifice it"
i really dont like too much fast mana in casual :(
LOVED THE SET, THO
Quick shout out to Lion's Eye Diamond. Black Lotus but you discard your hard when you activate it.
i like jeweled lotus because i opened it in my first pack in my draft booster box of commander legends. I am not particularly lucky with boosters so this was a really memorable experience.
I am devastated the twiddle desire deck wasnt called ‘twiddles of agony’
1:15 - Oh man, you should have found a picture of the guy who got a black Lotus car with an "ADD3MANA" plate :P
Little disappointing that this wasn't a way to announce a new "Lotus"
inb4 Gavin re-uploads this video during spoiler season for Dominaria United.
Sounded like a hint at the end (to me)...
@@RadAbishai That was a hint at the end. “Only TIME will tell”.
Oh hey, it's the RockLove Lotus jewelry. I know some of the people who worked on those.
I love jeweled lotus. I've played hundreds of games since it's release and it's never gotten the table killed though it does speed up the game. I actually enjoyed faster games. Between 15 to 30 minutes so I don't mind the speed of the card.
I'm sorta assuming that this was made because we have another lotus card coming out in Dominaria United. Looking forward to it.
Lotus bloom Second sunrise deck was my 1st extend format 100% competitive. Still I wish it would be modern legal again.
what are your thoughts on the most recent timeless lotus?
Lions eye diamond is so interesting!
After watching this, I'm now indolent; though contemptibly dreaming of lack of lotuses.
Damn, only missed Mirrored Lotus and Nyx Lotus when trying to think up all the (relevant) Lotus cards.
No love for Dowsing Dagger//Lost Vale as a riff on Lotus Vale?
Lotus Bloom is really fun in commander
Surprised Lion's Eye Diamond didn't make it into the list
I'd love a lotus petal reprint, my playset gets a lot of use
