    So glad this concept came back. Magic cards made by people outside WOTC have always fascinated me. Now if only they could do this with a whole set, similar to what they did in M15

      As somebody who was loosely involved with the M15 promotion, I'll say that I think it is SO COOL and also a ton of work. Maybe we'll see it again someday. :)

      @@thanhavictus There were 14 cards designed by people outside of Wizards. They're credited at the bottom of the card. For example, Shield of the Avatar was designed by Richard Garriott. There was also a 15th card designed by people outside of Wizards - Waste Not, which was designed by the Magic community as part of You Make the Card.

    Shadowmage infiltrator was only very briefly a chase card. Then people figured out that it wasn't even the best card at its mana cost in that set and it didn't see much play until the time spiral reprint.

    • @Seergun
      @Seergun Рік тому +3

    • @RevolutionElementz
      @RevolutionElementz Рік тому +1

      The problem to the Infiltrator's success was Wild Mongrel, and more particularly its often overlooked colour changing ability. Changing te Wil Mongrel's colour to black meant it could block Shadowmage Infiltrator all day long. Also, Psychatog didn't help.

    Oh something else
    (Tall tales)
    May only have one of this type in your deck
    One for each color and a artifact
    So red could be a lightning bolt
    For 4 damage
    Black can be a dark ritual one black add 3 B mana, you loose 3 life
    Blue U
    Each player draws 3 cards
    White exile target creature and target creature gains invincible until end of turn
    Green
    Add a creature and land from your deck to your hand opponent gains 5 life
    Artifact
    Blooming lotus
    Sacrifice it to add 2 mana of any color this turn
    Opponent adds 1 mana during their main phase 1

    14:00 This was a great design (admittedly, it should have just tapped. Like seriously, WOTC, change "this ability triggers only once each turn" to tapping - it's literally the signature mechanic of your game); making it Rakdos killed it. :(
    15:00 Bullshit. BB for a 2/2 with "T: Reveal your hand and discard a card of an opponent's choice. If you discard a card in this way, that player reveals their hand and discards a NON-LAND card of their choice. Activate this ability only as a sorcery." Double "B" in the cost makes it not splashable. 2 toughness is easy enough to kill, but you can make it 1 toughness if testing comes out that way. After that, it's just a matter of fiddling with the activation cost - adding B or "Pay 2 life" as you see fit to balance it. Oh, and you can make it legendary so that you can't have two in play at once.
    It's such a great design that WOTC butchered and then ignored. Shameful.

    What's really fun is to find a bonus bulk common from 10 years ago that's useless in draft or constructed, a 3/3 for 5 mana, and worth less than when it 1st came out! Or What's super exciting is to pay more for a box of set boosters only to discover most of the packs gave one bulk rare, because the other rare slots were taken up by alternate art uncommon, or better yet commons -- which is especially great since you don't draft set boosters, so they're doubly useless! And don't forget the art card! Who doesn't want a non - playable piece of cardboard with zero value ... but maybe it'll be a gold signature card *wow*...and it'll be all the previous plus worth an extra shiny nickel! Then don't forget Collector boosters, with their contents being mostly Pringled commons & uncommon, which every collector loves taking up space in their trash bins -- that premium quadruple price per pack really helps settle that delicious regret in your stomach -- especially when it's a masters set with double the price that's already quadrupled but the number of packs has been cut from 12 to 4!!! Ooooh, the excitement of gambling when the stakes are even higher, but that's the only way to get a "chance" at those super ultra duper mega meyah special treatment rarer than rare cards, which you have a better "chance" in he'll of getting a drop of Satan's piss in your mouth than ever finding! But,hey!!! - have more FUN & buy more!!! You are soooo right, fun, fun, fn FUN!!!

    The invitational is such a cool idea, I’m really happy it got brought back with the player spotlight. Personally I think they should reprint the older invitational cards with the modern frame and the players name in the flavor text to cement the legacy of those players even for the cards that don’t see too much play. Plus the fact that several of these have gotten reprints without the players likeness feels like we need to bring them back.

    I've thought long and hard about what I'd do if I got to design an invitational card, and the thing I'd want to pressure R&D about is that I'd want write the art brief or be allowed to do the art for a booster fun variant. I'd also do it as a favor to a community I love and for corporate synergy that I imagine Hasbro would greatly approve of. That being said, it'd be a little something like this design wise.
    Pinkie Pie, Ravnican Tourist 2R(W/B)
    Legendary Planeswalker - Pinkie
    +0 Create a legendary 3/1 Pegasus creature token named "Rainbow Dash" that has flying, is all colors, and has "When this creature leaves the battlefield, proliferate."
    -1 Choose 7 cards from outside the game and reveal them. an opponent chooses one at random. Exile that card. you may cast it until the end of your next turn. Put the rest of the chosen cards back outside the game.
    -7 You get an emblem with, "At the beginning of each of your opponent's upkeeps, Exile your Graveyard and exile the top 3 cards of your library. At the beginning of Your upkeep, discard your hand, then put all cards you own in exile into your hand.

    By golly I thought that Rootwater thief was strangely underpowered for an invitational card, and learning that the card as submitted was even weaker is blowing my mind.

    It's kinda funny, Rakdos Augermage was an allstar in my kitchen table magic deck when I was young. Yeah sure it isn't strong competitively, but we didn't know that at the time. In most cases I'd use it to get into Hellbent and dumpster anything they were saving to deal with my agro, then he could also fight well if I wasn't ready to do that. I get everything you said about it and it makes sense, but I for one am glad it got printed, it was one of my favourite cards when I started getting back into magic as a teen and I still use it in my Anje commander deck to this day.

    So why does wotc hate poor people? I ask this cause you keep raising prices even though you've had back to back years of record breaking profits. Wotc is on a totally different type of level of greed is the only thing I can come up with.

    I have an idea- let each HoF player select their favorite card, maybe from their winning deck or notable card, and make art with them on it for a series of Secret Lairs! Would be an extremely cool Secret Lair series to celebrate the return of paper magic events! Also include the casters!
