  • Broke down again on my 1979 Harley Davidson shovelhead FXS 80. This time it wasn't my fault. Or was it? I guess old Harley shovelheads might be a little cantankerous.

That's the first thing I done with my shovel. Changed back to points. And you can kick start it with lower voltage, where with electronic you can't.

That used to happen to my evo, the starter thing. It’ll freak ya right out, thinking the whole things gonna catch on fire. I’ve been told by some old timers that a push button on the starter itself can prevent that from happening

Scooter Tramp Scotty did a video on this happening .. he's got to push button down on the starter and it will still happen but you can take out 3 bolts which removed the shaft and start button, clean and lubricant it until you get a new one

    old bikes are great man
best part is when the bike broke down without u realizing and u just kick start it for 20 minutes until u get that something is off

    just great times

I used a Mallory Performance Ignition Module For 30 years plus on my 1975 FLH, never had a problem. I sold my bike just last year. That ignition is still in that bike today. Simple system that uses your OEM spark advance. When I sold my 75 it had 300 thousand miles on it. Still going strong.

@@SaddleTrampTV I agree. I have always used genuine HD parts on my Sporty. 100,000km and goes like the day it rolled off the showroom floor. I always get flack for using genuine. But I’m always the only one who doesn’t break down. Sure points can be troublesome, but somehow they always get fixed on the side of the road. They just need more care and attention. People want an old bike but with modern turnkey and go reliability. Not many of us left who tinker so much.

Tramp, in regards to that starter not disengaging, I had the same problem on the 1970 XLH I am currently restoring, in my case a brand new starter solenoid was bad, luckily I had the positive battery cable rigged with a small vise grip so I quickly knocked it off the battery post before my starting system was harmed. Scary thing to take your finger off the starter button and it continues to crank!
Great move going back to points and condenser. They generally will give you ample warning before they fail unlike a electronic system that suddenly die and leave you stranded. All my old time friends run points on their vintage Harleys for a good reason, live and learn I guess. Take care tramp, great video by the way!

I just keep an extra of each on hand just in case. I've thought about switching back to point to a few times but, I hear alot about quality points being hard if not impossible to buy. I love this sorta stuff with my shovelheads. Whenever it even has the slightest hiccup I tear into it to see whats going on. I always carry tools to address the issues that are going on at that moment. Currently I ride around with an extra set of plugs cause it fouls one of m, that cilinder sometimes cuts out. I have the most simplest Dynatec S ignition with the mechanical advance, chose it after reading omline its bulletprrof. With the point ignition the interval between the cilinders can be off, meaning only one will be correctly timed... this when the bolt throught the timing advance is not straight or the point lobes are worn unequal. I took my starter jackshaft apart this winter cause one time it failed to retract, greased it up properly. But it solenoid should be able to disengage even when the jackshaft sticks in the starter ring. And dont forget you can always kickstart it !

Luckily, I lost no money when I sold it. I bought a Honda 750 SS which of course, was far more reliable. 2010, I bought a new HD XR 1200 which I still have. 2016, I bought a new HD Heritage Soft Tail which I also still have Never a problem with either of those.

One issue with electronic IGN is they get flaky if the voltage starts to drop. Get below 10 or 11v and shit starts to sputter and cough. Points keep going down to 6 or 7 volts. And the damn Shovel starter solenoid setup keeps the starter engaged until the engine starts (Actually, till the eng RPM gets higher than the starter rpm). A real hell if the battery is weak and doesn't have the guts to start and.... will keep cranking till it dies. "Stay engaged when the damn thing doesn't have the balls to turn the thing over"..... Who thought of that???? And the weak power will burn up a starter motor quick. I actually added an Auto starter solenoid under the battery which disengages power to the starter when I let off the button without worry of pulling cables off. The IGN output from the new solenoid goes to the Shovels Solenoid trigger. Works well. And hides well behind the odd shaped cover under the battery tray.
That said, your symptoms can also be low voltage. You said you charged the battery, when you got back. I would too, thinking that trying to start it wore it out. But.... what if it was low volts when you broke down? Start the bike and make sure the regulator/rectifier is good. 13.5 to 14.5 volts to the battery when engine running. Easy check........ and if bad, switching to points won't get you far anyway.
Next, on points, got to keep the Advance weights clean, otherwise they can hang in the out position and it will hesitate coming down to idle at a stop-light. Can live with it, but annoying.... trust me.

Very excellent point T. Mack. Easy to blame starter system or electronic ignition system when the real problem is actually the battery, connections or charging system. You can't expect electrical componets to work correctly if they don't have correct voltage.

Your coil shorted out in the rain it sounds like. No bite washers on the coil or water in your nose cone because of the rain . I run rtv at the bottom of where the wire goes in and a gasket on the points cover. They sell knock off Ultima pick ups that suck. Dyna s is the way to go. Don't go backwards with points . Starters stick like that if your battery is not full as well, the Starter clutch slams in and doesn't have enough jam to turn so it hands up in the ring gear. fairly common on short trips when your battery hasn't had enough run time to sufficiently charge. Those engine take quite a bit to crank over, as you can tell if you try the kicker. For aftermarket ignitions I have the best luck with the Dynas I have used the S, (dual fire) the Dyna Single fire and the Dyna 2000i. I have never bought any Ultima stuff I ever had any luck with. Another thing, make sure your cables are tight and clean, the older bikes had small alternators and where less than adequate if everything wasn't right up to snuff! Welcome to Shovelheads, there's a reason they have a kicker.

Take the positive wire off the selonid and run that cable to the starter relay and then take a 4 gauge cable to your starter and take the starter button and put it on the starter relay to the post that says starter and make a jumper wire wire that goes from the top selonid and then it will never stick again because the selonid is not hit the only thing that will be hot is the wire will be on the relay and it is going to cure the stuck starter will not have current if you take the starter button and release it and no more power to the selonid. That’s how the factory fixed the 86 and on evolution it’s how all of them should have been done. And if the starter doesn’t have power it can’t stick. Hope this helps you. MLLH&R

I have Many many many miles on Shovelheads and as far as ignition, put the old Chevy points and condenser back in and it will run like a top. Keep a spare set with you and you can change them in minutes and back on the road. For the starter, solenoid hang up is not uncommon due to old design and corrosion causing the problem. Other than that, good old engine. .

I've also converted back to points on my 78 Shovel. Simplicity is better and easier to diagnose electrical problems. In my younger days I had a 1965 Honda CB160. It had electric start and a kicker. The starter would on occasion stick on. I'd grab a 2X4 and whack the seat. That would stop the starter from turning. It would only happen when parked near the garage with the lumber stacked near it. Haunted house on two wheels cracked me up! Lol

A guy was working on his boat as I coasted into his place, ( down hill driveway.) He had tools!! My saddlebags were empty. Carry a spare set of point too. I had a set of points mess up on me riding my 1977 Sportster back in 1977 from Florida one time. Thank goodness a guy stopped and helped me out. He actually went got another guy which opened up a Harley shop on a Sunday, that he worked at and got me a new set of points. It turned out that the plastic peace that rides up and down on the lob broke off. this happened in Athens Georgia.

Used to run points in my 65 Electra glide. About 17 years a go I put electronic ignition on it. A guy came up with it for the stock distributor. Also added an electronic voltage regulator. I rigged up a mounting plate, to mount the regulator under the bike. If you aren't looking for the regulator, you can't see it. The bike looks stock, but with better performance. (As far as "performance" goes on a bloated 74 inch, Electra Glide goes.) It's easier on the generator, the light doesn't dim when I idle and there's a hotter spark. And some years back, I put a Daytona Twin Tec ignition on my 80 Shovel. Never had a problem. The only bike left with points is my 71 Electra Glide. When I get around to it, it will get electronic ignition. I have been over the adjusting everything before a trip. I'm sure I'll have an ignition problem eventually, but that happens on new bikes too.

Had the ignition problem on my 72 SuperGlide S&S, Ultima and Compufire. It turned out that the stator was shorting out on the rotor at certain RPM at certain loads throwing high AC voltage out to destroy the electronic ignitions (plural)
It was hard to trace. No signs of it in the shop revving the engine or checking for frayed wires

Coming from running points to electronic ignition the best luck I have had is on older shovels is a Dyna S hall effect sensors with the stock advance unit and an alternator upgrade. Don't know about Ultima ignitions but I know the early Harley electronic ignitions are suspect. Changed many early 80's shovels back to points. Welcome to the world of shovelheads. Ran into very few bowling ball bikes that did not need to be torn down completely and put back together correctly. Later bro.

I like both ignition systems. I run the Ultima in my Ironhead stroker kick only bike. It's starts so easy with it and runs great, especially with the VOES hooked up. Helps keep the engine a little cooler. One thing I've learned about the Ultima is apparently the ignition module is made by Dynatek, but the coil is cheap Chinesium. So I run the Ultima module with an actual Dynatek coil and haven't had an issue in 6 years yet.

Hey Saddle Tramp! Looks like you are going to deal with it man! Nice of you to help a Biker gal too. Awesome to have friends like Darrel who are willing to give you a hand. Maybe sometime you can fire up the grill and invite Darrel to a good burger or maybe deliver it to him. You will know what is appropriate because you are smart and considerate. I like the idea of a battery disconnect - do they make waterproof ones? In the mid 1990s my old Chevy truck shorted in the starter. Luckily I had a pair of vice-grips in easy reach and popped the hood, jumped out, and disconnected the battery terminal. Smoke was billowing and I thought I had a fire and I had no fire extinguisher! Boy was I relieved to see the smoke subsided. Like you I called a friend and made a quick trip to the parts house and did a parking -lot repair. Thank goodness it was something simple. The only thing I had to worry about was to make sure the starter gear teeth did not mesh too tightly into the flywheel, else add shims. I like the simple easy repairs that work when I am done - don't you? Ride safe friend!

In the early 90's on my 78 FXS Shovel I dual plugged my heads and used a single fire dual points ignition plate where I used the Accel blue chip points. The bike ran great but those points were hard to find. Fast forward a few years when Dyna finally came out with electronic dual single fire ignition that I could use and I switched over. My bike was kick only because I removed all the starter parts and didn't want to worry about not ever having a issue with a battery issue cause by electric starter, this was before AGM batteries were so plentful. I wouldn't ditch the electoric ignition just yet, make sure your charging system in good shape, your wiring and the battery. Switch to a AGM battery since the electronic ignition requires more stable electricty.
