- One of the Spireites greatest hours. A team from the third tier reach the semi-final of the greatest cup competition in sport and hold their Premier League opponents.
The Chesterfield underdogs take a 2-0 lead after Andy "Bruno" Morris taps in for the coolest goal celebration ever and skipper Sean Dyche belts one from the penalty spot.
After Middlesbrough pull one back Chesterfield are denied a clear goal by referee David Elleray before the equalizer that takes the tie to extra time.
The top flight team then takes the lead and match reaches the last minute. Chesterfield born Jamie Hewitt then meets a Chris Beaumont cross to loop a header into the top corner. Possibly the most famous goal in the Club's history.
As Andy Gray said, ""That's just unsaveable, you don't save that, it's as simple as that! Look at that for a header- Jamie Hewitt." The commentator concluded, "Why do we love this game so? That's why!"

Still one of the best cup semi finals of all time.
RIP John Duncan. Remember watching this as a neutral. Amazing game, but the thing I remember most was him smashing his glasses celebrating the 3rd goal.
My word Sean dyche really hit that penalty well
Almost 20 years later and this still gives me goosebumps.
For about a week after this game, which I was fortunate enough to be at, me and many other fellow Spireites had very hoarse voices!
I'm boro, born n bred, and will always love & support my boro, no matter what league were in, but like most boro fans, I do feel for Chesterfield, they were robbed, plain & simple, and we know a little about how they feel, refs have robbed us many many times, (3 times already this season, costing us valuable points, just look at the games against, Blackpool, Leeds & Blackburn this season, perfect examples cause as replays showed, the ref got it wrong, and getting 3 major decisions wrong is just to much, & were only half way through the season, so fair play Chesterfield, you were robbed too
I was there. What a day! Even the journey on the coach was memorable. I've been to some big games over the years, but the atmosphere was electric. It felt like a home game because the noise was all Chesterfield fans. Ellery got it wrong, but that's all in the past now. I think it's great that the player that scored our third goal, who was such a trooper as a player, is now part of the backroom staff at the Proact. Jamie Hewitt is everything that is great about our team.
Great comment. Very belatedly.
Sean Dyche throwing a fit when the penalty given against him was more of a penalty than the 1 he scored
Jamie hewitt is a fucking legend
All these years later it still bring a tear of joy to my eyes and gives me goose bumps
Yeah Chesterfield played out of their skins that day.. I'm a Boro fan so definitely understand how you feel when you just don't get the decision you need. Boro have a had a few of those over the years believe me lol, . Great times as a Boro fan those days... If we'd have had a bit of luck ourselves over those few seasons we'd have had a couple of trophies at least.
It's heartbreaking for me that we were denied the final because of a mistake by Elleray and I was only 1 at the time! God knows how it must feel for those who were there.
Also have to say though that ever since that game, I've always had a soft spot for Chesterfield, and always keep an eye out for there result on match days, (think it's because being a boro fan, we can relate what it's like to get so close to the finishing line, only to be robbed as your stepping over it)
Goal line technology
Never knew Chesterfield look like should have gone 3-1 up...
.what a game
Billy mercer .Jon Howard. At rotherham utd together
Chesterfield promoted today
RIP John Duncan and kev Randall great game COYB
Was over the line miller's fan
One of the greatest matches of all time, This is why I love the FA Cup, no matter how much money has corrupted the game THIS competitions novelty will never die.
MODERN FOOTBALL 0 FA CUP 4.
unfortunate that people don’t look at the FA cup with much regard anymore. 9 years have passed since you commented and money has corrupted the game to its core
@@leodesgarcons I think you'll find that money took over the game long before this.
Greatest fa cup semi final how we got relegated with these team I’ll never know
Loved this match back then.. I thought the john champion commentary was better..sean dyche was there!
Is Andy Gray still talking about penalty technique from 3.32?
Every time I watch this my blood boils
Tim Starbuck every time I watch this I piss myself coys
Why the match did in Old Trafford ? it is home from Boro ? I don't sure. Someone can answer me ? please
+LmdsLucas FA Cup semi-finals are played at neutral grounds.
+LmdsLucas They're played at Wembley now.
OOh Nice thank you man.
It was better when they had it at neutral grounds, it made getting to Wembley a bit more special.
Remember this game well. Chesterfield should have won it about 4-1. Instead, they forced a 3-3 draw, but went on to lose the replay against a much better Middlesbrough side.
Definitely over the line for chesterfield, and Hewitt goal should’ve been the winner
Should have had a goal ,,it was well over the line ,,absolute scandle
Should have been 3-1
Another game where David Elleray massively fucked up. I've not got anything against the guy, but he was bloody inconsistent, no doubt about that.
Has Elleray ever properly explained why he waved play on when we all thought Chesterfield appeared to make it 3-1? I remember Sky sometimes had Elleray on when they discussed weekend games. The others in the studio gave him a ridiculously exaggerated amount of respect: oh, he talks very articulately, he's a house master at Harrow (I think), so he must know what he's talking about. Imo he talked a lot of nonsense.
Exactly, you can't disallow a legitimate goal on the basis of a foul after the ball's gone in, so that was a terrible blunder.
@@peterdagostino739If you watch the replay, he blows before the shot is taken. I can’t figure why he blows but it’s definitely before
@Stephen Foz A collosal blunder whatever the F he was blowing for, which presumably would have been corrected by VAR these days, although that's also not foolproof.
This shit still makes me angry!
ha ha Chelsea, bet they were glad they got boro
They were robbed.
Dyche still crying....
ultra Chesterfield biased highlights!!
Boro had more chances and our quality shone as we thumped yers 3-0 2nd leg.......plus we played about 7 games in space of about 16 days and down to 10men.
Boro showed fight and deserved it!
eddie theeagle
How can you say deserved it when a Chesterfield goal was disallowed that should've counted..
But Chesterfield's penalty was never a penalty, very few replays shown, but an obvious dive. The ball was way over the line though, so evened out over the match.
Definitely dodgy.
