It worked! It feels way harder to add the growl when you play sequence of notes compare to add the growl on the starting note. I felt like the growl came more natural if i did a deep ”humming” sound though. But with this technique it felt more alive! Good work. I do study almost every video you post. Keep it up man! Cheers from sweden
Hey John! Yeah, it takes a little bit of practice to be able to keep the growl going when you switch notes, but once you get it down you'll be good to go! The humming is a bit easier, but the growl isn't as strong, and it is harder to relearn it with the raspy throat, so I always just start off with that technique.
I haven't played in forever, never learned growl in high school. I got a decent Alto now but I think I will wait a bit before training my growl. Thank you Scott.
Hardest part for me is switching from “un-growled” notes to “growled” notes. I can mostly play a full major scale while growling, but I still can’t throw in a badass growl to end a blues line. I guess I gotta keep practicing. Anyways, thanks for the video 😀
Saxophone growl is so expressive and beautiful especially when used in the right moment. I never new it was so difficult and sophisticated to generate.
Fantastic video and series. You are a great saxophone teacher, musician and inspiration. You are a treasure to so many people on our planet who are learning to play saxophone! Thank you.
Absolute perfect instruction. Well-broken down, got the growl out first try (then proceeded to lose it for the next few tries, but eh). Thanks so much!!!
Getting it on the first try is pretty impressive! This is one of those techniques that is a little tough to figure out at first because it is just such a weird throat movement.
@@ScottPaddock I think it's easier for Arabic speakers since that sound is used in the language. Thanks for your reply! I left a message on your improv video -- any chance we could get a call-response blues in all 12 keys?
Played saxaphone for 13 pluss years..... Found this vidio and... My mind blew up. Well explained mate, with practice i have been able to get this down.
I love how to-the-point and thorough you are with your explanations of even the toughest concepts. I also appreciate that you demonstrate each step as you're going through them, so as to give us a reference for what we should actually be trying to do at each step, rather than just verbal explanations.
Scott, you are amazing with explanations. Tried it first time and it worked in 5 min. Thank you again so much!!! Definitely one of the best saxophone learning channels on UA-cam.
Thank you so much! Watched a ton of different videos and figured out how to growl a bit, but it wasn't consistent. I had all the parts, but you really put them in the correct spots for me. Can't thank you enough, it's been bothering me for the past eight months that I couldn't growl
I know I’m 2 years late lol but thank you for this video. people kept telling me it’s in the throat but you helped me actually pinpoint where in the throat I needed to do it.
Ok. Played since 6th grade .i am now 59. I play in a 10 piece 70s funk horn band. Shotgun and Tequila sound hollow without the growl. U just explained it for me. Thank u.
I noticed you mentioned the raspy voice whereas others just say sing a note other than the one you play..usual;ly lower...but also as I go low down towards the low D I finfd suddenly singing high makes the lower notes sound better...but not high...but you are the first to do all the raspy voice things...definitely interesting and working...thanks so much for this...
Thanks Scott. I will try this soon.. Very positive video and great instruction.. I am learning Sheryls song with Bobby on sax... Your video will help greatly.. Thank you so much.. Have a great holiday.. Jon. L
Have tried this for months! This video finally made it "click" for me. I was basically mongolian throat singing into it before which made it sound like a fog horn.
Super video Scott and I've tried many without success , however your tips worked wonders . Can you suggest how often you should practice growling and would you recommend growling each day to improve it ? taking into account the effect it can have on your throat. I've failed to find an answer to this anywhere on the web.
Hey, once you've got the concept down, just try using it in songs. It's not something you need to practice on a regular basis. So I wouldn't recommend over practicing it.
Good video! I've had a few tries with the humming technique but it just cuts off the air. This gargling approach makes much more sense and I used to do something similar on tin whistle to fake multiple tonguing.
That’s really natural to have a fuzzy high a. Sound comes out of the neck octave hole. No one but you really hears that fuzz. What you can do is some saxophonists I’ve known do is sodded a piece of metal between the cork and the hole so you can’t hear it
Great video. Matter of fact all your videos are very helpful. Kinda like a computer guy talking English instead of computer so everyone can understand...You're talking saxophone using English instead of saxophone. Very understandable and well thought out! Will consider Zoom or Skype for more info...on the tenor sax...perfect time to do it! Nice job
It seems Earl Bostic did this through most of his tunes, even in his amazing altissimo lines. I can’t remember his playing without the growl. Do you recall any other styles used by him. Did constant growl stop him from using other tones? As a kid, 50+ years ago, When I heard him playing on recordings in his R and B style, I thought he was playing a Tenor! I was blown away at him playing that high on a tenor…. Now I’m blown away at his playing that high on his alto! If anyone reads this I suggest you listen to his “Way Out There in Orbit”!
Hey Terry! Yeah, in early R&B the growl was a normal part of the sax sound. You hear it everywhere. Just checked out Up There In Orbit - he's killing it...bebop lines, overtones grooves, blues, scoops, altissimo acrobatics, and super chops. Thanks for sharing!
I have to work on going from clean note to growl note, I can start (poorly, but better than when I first practiced it) but I can’t do it in the middle of something.
I watched many videos of growl on sax. I practiced a few days and it's really worked, but i have a question. I used to speak(?) in saxphone just like your video to make that growl sound happened but when people really make that growl sound, they really speak in saxphone just like the beginning ? Because I always heard my own voice, or it's just I doesn't practice enough?
Yeah, there is second sound that you might hear coming from the throat, but usually when you are growing the listener won't hear it as two separate sounds.
Hello Scott! I can make the growl but many people told me I'm doing it worng and I might hurt my throat and voice chords. Any tips? Thanks and great video btw!
Thanks a lot for your video! is it normal to have some pain (not strong pain, but more like the sensation you've been breathing for long time just with your throat) after practising?
When my throat hurts from practicing it usually either a reed that is to strong or a leak in my sax. It is taking me more air and my throat isn't happy about it. It usually comes from pressure.
I have accidentally made a growled note in a different way that I can't seem to replicate on command. So I was searching for another way. Unfortunately, I can't seem to make that sound in the back of my throat without playing the horn 😟, let alone while playing. Had anyone managed it a different way?
It worked!

I wanted to learn sax but instead learned metal screaming, great.
hahaha!
Me otherwise 😅
Both are great
😂😂
The two are not mutually exclusive as you can hear here
Scott: Growl into your sax.
Me: Growl.... Blow.... COUGH COUGH COUGH!
Dying goose: (Emerges from my sax)
Good lesson tho! :)
aflack. hahahaha.
Same here haha
METAL SCREECHING
Finally learned how to growl! This video was incredibly helpful and the best teaching I have found, thank you!
🦁🦁🦁 Congrats!
So tomorrow morning I’m soloing on tenor.... I REALLY hope I get can this down in an hour
Might take longer than an hour. Good luck!
Did you get it?
Potáto took me a few extra months, but can confirm I can now growl. Tho I havnt used it for any performance yet
Thatoneguy Mccool I’m proud good work. I’m still learning it and I’m not that good 😂
Ayy tenor gang!

Thank you for sharing. God bless you!
Let me know if you were able to get your first successful growl after watching this video!

Of course I did!.. YOU taught me!.. Many thanks..top stuff again Scott..

👍👍👍👍 Awesome!
I just got my first growl today!! I get what you mean, once you get over the comfort thing then it happens. Thank you so much!!
Rock on!
Thank you so much for giving this information Scott Paddock
Love this lesson! Way more advanced than I need as a beginner but I get bored sometimes with scales and long tones so this should be fun to try!
Have fun with it!
Thank you for this tip. I like playing 50s rock n roll, and growling is always a big deal in tenor sax solos.
