- Here is my answer to a video response from a young tenor player accidentally slotting up to an altissimo C# instead of the intended G. Here's a good fingering for high G on tenor saxophone. Hope this works for you!
I'm embaressed to admit to the same problem. Thank you for your help and commitment. 68 year old tenor sax student... Thanks!
I’ve been very frustrated “squeaking” when trying to find that G, and your explanation/strategy is blowing my mind! I cannot wait to give this a go tomorrow morning! Thaaaank youuu!!!!
Thank you so much! I spent about 5 minutes on the first exercise, and about 5 minutes into the second one, the G started popping out, so I kept that up for another 20. This technique really does work. Just make sure no one else is home when you're practicing! :)
Hey, glad to hear it helped!
Holy crap this just fixed my altissimo G
I’m not kidding !! 5 minutes !!!
Wow thanks so much 🎉🎉🎉
I think the guy has a great presentation. I noticed a number of people clicked don't like... This guy has much patience with his students. Even my college professor wouldn't give us instructions on Altissimo. Yet, tenor players (60 percent) soloist in jazz band. This guy is topps
This is super, thanks so much! I love your positivism, and these are very useful exercises. I have a '75 Buescher Aristocrat alto sax that I think is a student version, (but I love it) that doesn't have an F key, so I have been struggling a bit to find my way to the F# and G. I DID, however hit a high C#, so your vid was spot on, thank you! I'm off to try this on my tenor now:)
didn't know Owen Wilson plays sax
Shirish Malhotra lol, yeah. And he's good too apparently
Thank you dude, I'm just a high schooler trying to play the G for a solo in a song called Channel One Suite, and this is helping me get my alticimo out
Thanks for this explanation! I have been struggling with this exact problem for some time and this is the first time someone has come with an explanation for the problem (overshooting to a high c#) AND with a possible solution. I tried for a few minutes and got down to altissimo B (and now my jaw is tired of it) but I am certainly going to give this more time and I have good hopes this is going to work for me. I'll let you know when I get there!
Hey, long time no see! Thanks for showing up here and helping on my quest for a new G fingering :)
Excellent video - well done and really helpful. I find an overtone on B with the F# key more stable but I've always wanted to used this fingering because of it's flow and it's so old school. Thanks again
it worked perfectly! well done!
Thanks!! A great help...works for me!!
Can you do a video where you play each note of a tenor sax? I want to expand my range but I know the fingering for higher notes after octave F.
excellent tutorial man!
good lesson. thank you
Nice tone!
I have the opposite problem, I'm undershooting altissimo G I keep getting high e natural instead of g and it sounds like regular high e and not an octave higher.
Yeah, the tear drop top key and the f sharp key added works well for the g altissimo for me, I suppose it's 'horses for courses' and it all depends on the horn you blow, as well as the mouthpiece and reed set up. I blow a Jericho tenor saxophone, with a cheap ebay plastic mouthpiece, and a plastic BARI reed that I sanded down with the finest grade wet and dry sanding paper to customise to my own preference. Have you tried the plastic reeds? I know some saxophonists would consider this sacrilege, but I've played mine for at least two years now, and in that time I haven't had to renew it! If I'd have been still blowing the cane reeds, I'd have bought a good few boxes of 10s in that space of time with perhaps only 3 reeds from each box being up to scratch.
Useful - thanks
Question for you in regards to playing in Altissimo on the Tenor Sax. How do you incorporate it into a solo... like lets say the song is in the key of G, and you as a tenor player is playing in A, and you Hit the Altissimo A, and want to hit the Altissimo C, how do you differentiate the two different Altissimo notes right after the other without hitting other notes accidently.
I have attempted to do this exercise, but in my case, I end up playing an altissimo D instead of a G. Is this normal?
i have the exact same problem. I end up hitting a D instead of the G.
Do you have a video explaining some of the other altissimo notes? I can play the regular range of the saxophone pretty well, but I've never really understood how to get to the altissimo register. I've heard that altissimo A is easier to play than F# or G.
+Luke Juras Sure thing. I just made a playlist...See playlists: Tenor Saxophone Altissimo Fingerings. Good luck!

interesting method. will try it.
I just would like to add that you should try to balance the voice volume with the sax. It's difficult to hear this way
Great video, but you need a lapel microphone to pickup your voice with a higher gain, mixed with the sax mic. It's hard to listen to your voice when the sax is so much louder.
no idea which kets yuou are pressing - i am a novice
lovely roof
Man...I bet play any note with this single G position. I definitely don't have this kind of chops. I figured out my G using B + side F#. That's the easiest for me.
one stupid question is so called sqeeks realy a note more or less in tune sorrey for my bad inglish i live in norway
ted tedsen I think you're asking if a squeak is really just a really high note. The answer is no, the reed is behaving very differently than a "normal" note when a squeak happens. The reed vibrates very fast and consistently on a very high note. When a reed squeaks, it is failing to vibrate consistently. It's the sound of the reed being choked. Thanks for watching!
Yeah because there is fingerlings for those high notes right, I'm gonna try to get those high notes, thx!
Thanx, but next time do something about sound differnce on sax and speech
I gave up on this vid after 4 minutes. This guy keeps gassing on and takes forever to get to the point. I turned it off.
Don Lessnau u gotta learn how to learn bro
Well...gosh dang. I hope you can get it together.
