It's so weird to see less than 100 comments on such exhausting and so beneficial video... Thank you for your efforts... Great presentation
Thank you very much for watching and your kind words. Next filter baskets I will be testing are Pesado HE and Kafmasino.
@@mycoffeeshow111 I can't wait ;)
Recently, switch from VST to IMS. Yes, confirm what u said: Different basket are good for their purpose, IMS is greatest for longer shot, include longer pre-infuse. Therefore can ground finer
Thank you for sharing your experience. If you pulled 2 shots, the same ratio, time of extraction and so on, would you be able to taste the difference between VST and IMS?
@@mycoffeeshow111probably only James Hoffman can
Decent Basket use the same manufacturer as VST, but recalculate / calibrate , to optimise max no. of extraction hole position
Thank you for the info!
Thanks for the video :-) very interesting! I just got a LaMarzocco Linea Micra and will upgrade to Pullman basket
Thx for watching. Congratulations! Maybe try some HE basket next?
@@mycoffeeshow111 what is HE basket?
@@Kang_Guru. high extraction baskets like Wafo, Sworks, Weber or Pesado
They’re all “precision” enough these days. The importance is coverage, Pullman’s has the most bottom coverage and less tapering wall of all. And icing on the cake: if you use bottom paper filter, any 2.25 inch paper punch will make perfect paper filter for it, with minimal wall creep.
Thank you. I never really used a paper filter but maybe I should. Would it reduce the overall body of the shot?
@@mycoffeeshow111 That’s the misconception I think, pressure is still going to do its thing. You can dial in body in my experience. Bottom paper filter does clean up the palpable grittiness texture a bit. All these depend on the grinder output profile. Square Chemex has the best workflow if you want to experiment.
@@longpvo thank you. I will have to try that. So you say Pullman basket would be the best for that experiment?
Pullman, square Chemex, Fiskar or EKSuccess 2.25”
Ι tried them all
The best results, clarity, sweet finish,i had it with the standard double Gaggia basket
Yes, that shity basket of 4€
Now i want to try the ims super fine basket, similar to the Gaggia
Thank you for sharing. It also depends on which grinder you use. Some cheaper ones can struggle to grind fine enough for fast flow baskets.
The most important though is, that you enjoy your coffee, not how expensive your basket is.
@@mycoffeeshow111 believe my i tried on 4 different machines, expensive machines, and 4 different grinders, from Ascaso i2 to mazzer Major/anfim caimano
Basket like vst many times overextract coffee, and let pass fines to the beverage
Once i tried on synesso hydra MVP the Gaggia basket and it was much cleaner and sweeter with that basket
Thankfully i overpass the placebo effect on coffee equipment after 20 years of professional experience
Nice video btw 👍
@@wakeawaken430 In that case I can’t add anything else Guess I will have to get that basket then. Thank you for watching!
@@mycoffeeshow111 off course ymmv, but you can try it, costs nothing
As i said i want to try too the ims super fine, many baristas say that they are happy with that
I have 2 IMS baskets, 1 VST, 1 from an ASCASO machine and the ones that came with my ECM machine. From my experience really depends on the beans I use. Overall I think VST doesn't worth it's price.
You might be spot on. Different beans, different shots profiles may get better with different baskets. Recently I’ve tested E&B, Reneka and Wafo. Soon I will have Unibasket as well. So far, Wafo is the best but definitely not worth the price tag.
Hi Jack, I use VST 18g ridged on my londinium and IMS baristapro on my modded gaggia. I have just ordered the E&B superfine 18g to try out on the londinium.
Thank you for sharing. Are you happy with your VST? I guess Londinium offers enough body in the shot even if VST takes a bit of that away. Let me know how it compares with E&B
Yes and no, i found the 15g unforgiving till i moved to the 18g VST. Yes it does, always produces a good cup. The E&B is supposed to slow down the flow and is also suited well for the londinium portafilter. How you liking the decent? I was so close to purchasing one, just couldn’t justify it and pretty happy with the londinium LR having recently upgraded earlier in this year from the L1.
@@i_Lndr thank you. I really like the Decent but would love to compare it with Londinium.
@@mycoffeeshow111 have to checked out Brian Quinn’s recent review on the R24.
@@i_Lndr yep, I have seen it but still not the same as comparing them myself. Maybe one day Londinium will send me one for testing 😛
Hey Jack, interesting video thanks! I don't have a Decent Espresso Machine, but have had a few other machines (Gaggia, Expobar, Londinium). I've had most luck with VST baskets personally. The IMS ones i've tried have been a bit fussy, but this was a few years back. I've also purchased a Pullman Basket (flow rate definitely higher) as I wanted to try out paper filter on the bottom. Interested in your thoughts regarding paper filters too. p.s. I heard Decent Baskets were VST also, but holes are quite different...cheers!
Thank you!I have never tried paper filter myself. One of the viewers mentioned that already. Maybe I should try it? What would be the purpose of that? To even out the extraction?
@@mycoffeeshow111 Yes, a higher extraction % 👍you need to ensure the paper fits the bottom of the basket exactly, so not creeping up the edges etc. 2.25inch hole punch, chemex papers and a pullman basket
@@andyheddell thank you. Would it work with Areopress or Hario papers?
@@mycoffeeshow111 in theory, but aeropress filters are a bit too big, so you have to cut them down to size, basically 2.25inch to fit pulllman baskets. Chemex papers and a 2.25inch hole punch is what you want ideally Jack 👍
@@andyheddell thank you again!
I think your difficulty in distinguishing the flavour notes might be due to the Niche. I would be interested to see how things would change if you switched over to flat burrs. Looks like you have a DF64. Do you have the SSP MP burrs installed?
Ya, conical are horrible. I'll never go back from my DF64.
@@yalayolo9974 Eh not all conicals are the same, Niche's strong point is not flavour clarity.
I the hindsight I should go for DF64. It has SSP MP burrs.
Having said that, I used it for the video I recorded yesterday (turbo bloom vs turbo) with the same coffee and still struggled to get the flavours ( but definitely less chocolate in taste).
@@BensCoffeeRants Yeah exactly. Niche's strengths are amazing workflow, easy dial-in, and loads of body and sweetness with medium/dark roasts and classic espresso blends.
the df64 is such a pain to work with
E&B is my favorite
thanks for the video friend!
Thank you for watching!
2:00 Apparently they're made in the VST factory for Decent, I noticed the Decent baskets are noticeably heavier / thicker than the VST at least vs my old VST (probably got it 8 years ago?) so it's possible they changed things up.
I believe the VST baskets are ridgeless (can you also get them ridged?) and the Decent Baskets are ridged.
But otherwise design seems similar to me, on both you have to grind finer, and I find I have issues with channeling on both Decent and VST baskets.
For that reason I prefer the stock baskets, it's easier to get more consistently good results, vs maybe getting slightly more clarity and a better shot sometimes but a worse shot more often due to channeling. It doesn't seem worth it to me!
Maybe it works better on a Decent brand machine your shots look like they're coming out nicely.
The Superfine mesh IMS basket was similar to the stock basket and worked well with a little more clarity and less body due to the super fine mesh I believe, but I didn't love it since it was harder to clean.
Thank you for sharing. I haven’t thought about checking the weight. You can get ridgless and ridged VST. Mine is in fact ridged and weighs 33.9g vs 34.4g for Decent basket
@@mycoffeeshow111 Thanks wasn't sure about that ridge thing, I only had the ridgeless VST. I re-sold the 18g VST and my Decent 18g one but the Decent was noticeably heavier otherwise I wouldn't have thought to weigh it either. I just weighed the 15g Decent and it's 33g! I remember the 18g one being just a little heavier so probably like yours (34g). But pretty sure the VST was more like my Stock 18g basket closer to 29g maybe, I'm thinking they changed the VST ones to be thicker / heavier at some point, unless the ridged are just heavier/thicker (re-enforcing the ridge since it's a potential weak point?).
Hi! Iam looking for 58mm precision basket as well shower screen for mine Sunbeam Barista Max EM5300. Which models are indicated? Tks.
I never heard about Sunbeam Barista until now. It looks very close to Barista Express. I don’t know how good the grinder is but VST and Pullman baskets have lots of holes, can be faster than standard basket therefore you would need to grind finer. I probably would go for IMS as they are a bit slower. That is just my speculation, as I said I don’t know this machine.
@@mycoffeeshow111 Thank you! 👍🏼
what is the best basket for Picopresso? HUGH IMS?
@@Kang_Guru. I would try IMS although Sworks is probably better but much more expensive.
@@mycoffeeshow111 thanks!
Were you able to sleep after all that caffeine 😂
Videos like this I try to shoot in the morning. I don’t know why but I feel more over caffeinated after testing pour overs than espresso.
Yea espresso has less caffeine than pour over. I just remember when i got my rocket machine and i went throw so much coffee first day. I had a hard time sleeping at night.
jack, let's do a giveaway of the Decent or 1kg bag of your local coffee!
1kg of coffee not a bad idea but would only work for UK viewers as it is pointless sending it abroad. Most people watching are from Australia, US, Canada and Peru so I would have a lot of disappointed people here.
@@mycoffeeshow111 you got to think global, Jack. Let's make this happen!
@@yalayolo9974 you are right! Let me conquer UK first thought 😛

I noticed that a normal 50.8/51mm tamper doesn't fit/press well the powder in my IMS 51mm basket. Anyone with the same problem? It just press on the surface, while the bottom coffee remain not pressed.
Maybe try pressing harder. Normcore tamper I use on La Pavoni works well.
@@mycoffeeshow111 I'll try but the basket is technically tighter at the bottom. I use the basket for De Longhi Dedica but I use a bottomless portafilter
@@oraziolegname5941 out of curiosity, why do you think it doesn’t tamp well? How did you determine that?
the baskets are like snake oil to me :)
Hmm. I am starting to agree with you . This weekend I will be comparing IMS with E&B and next week Wafo basket arrives
@@mycoffeeshow111 looking forward to viewing it. Many people bought expensive baskets because they have channeling and come to Reddit and asked why they still got it. Let's alone the tasting improvement.
Depends on whichacine yoi biy some are good enoigh and some are not
