  • Today I wanted to share a quick RV Mod for using your RV Duel Fuel Inverter Generator with the onboard propane through the RV Propane Quick Disconnect. I love this modification for RVing because now I don't need to bring an extra tank or hassle with moving tanks around.

Hi Jared, Great Video! You are making the LP line mod much more problematic than you need to. All you need to do is to have an extra quick release connector that you can insert into the fitting on the generator side of the hose so you can bleed off the air in the propane hose. You open the valve and when you smell the mercaptan (the LP smell), you remove the quick release and insert the hose into the generator.

Great modification Jared! I did this mod a few years ago and LOVE it as well. A few points to consider for folks who aren't aware - propane running watt power numbers on a generator are going to be lower than gasoline - so if your generator is JUUUUST big enough to power what you need when running gasoline - you might find that it doesn't work well on propane. Additionally, the longer propane lines off the quick connect lend themselves to a higher potential of someone tripping over them or pulling them out - installing a GasStop at the tanks are a worthwhile safety feature - I'm currently working on a video about GasStop after having run it on my rig for almost two years and highly recommend one. And to take the mod one step further - you can make quick connects for gas fire pits as well - eliminating the need to lug out a propane tank for a quick fire when you don't want to gather firewood. This mod is great and definitely adds a TON of convenience and flexibility to that port - especially with a dual fuel generator! - Joshua, RV Gear & Far

I recently did this on my trailer to run my gen with propane from the quick connect. I found a UA-cam video, like this one, for my specific gen and ordered all the parts along with installing the quick connect that my trailer didn't come with. Now I can run a grill, or a fire pit, or my gen off the new quick connect but not all 3 at once, so I'll probably continue bringing an extra 20lb propane tank for flexibility. Great video Jared!

Thank you very much for being responsive to your audience and making this video! I bought a very similar long propane tank extension hose like you linked to, but it did NOT work with the generator (same exact one as you have), even after bleeding the air using a torch. I ended up buying the Champion branded version that worked like a champ (pun intended)! I like your quick connect version but will need to add a QD connector to my trailer first!

I did exactly this, same generator, last year and have had zero issues running off my trailer's propane port; I have even used a splitter and run my weber grill AND the generator at the same time with no issues. The one thing I did differently was use a section of flex hose with the original portable tank regulator to the quick connect, rather than rigid connecting right to it directly. It works a little nicer and more flexible to allow the whip hose to the generator and the fuel valve to stay clipped to it and the propane tank supports only the regulator.

I did this with my Champion 3500 some years ago. I also added a disconnect by my main regulator for front or driver side uses. 2 or 3 pulls usually does it.
It might have been good to describe the other part on the supply hose. Some folks think that's part of the regulator.

    Good video….
    Couple notes
Each supply line with a dual fuel generator will come with a regulator and a load regulator. The bigger is the load regulator. One major problem with running on board is you need the load regulator. Some generators have them mounted inside which this makes running a supply line super simple. Just buy a new supply line with no propane regulator, as you said the RV has one and that’s what you will use. If using a bigger gen buy the bigger propane line as you may need it for higher flow.
Last is the little button you were pressing. Maybe see if that is actually the actuator that cuts fuel off to the carb. This needs to be depressed to let the gen know propane is now connected and it stops gasoline flow to the carb with a solenoid. But it could be manual as well verses electronic pin.
I upgraded to 40 lb tanks and rarely use gas due to the many benefits of propane. Although with all the solar and batteries on board I rarely use a generator now. 😀👍🏼

I did this a couple years ago on my Champion 3400W DF. It's been great. I have a 12ft and 16ft LP hose so I can put the genny wherever it is quietest and downwind for exhaust reasons. I also use a QD "Y" fitting so I can hook up the flat top or other device and have the genny hooked up so I don't have to keep swapping hoses. I am thinking about using a short hose between the two regulator parts to remove the stress on the cast threads/bungs from extending the setup several inches with QD fittings.

I did the same thing with mine. The o ring failed on the 20 lb connection, so I had to purchase a new one from Champion. Once I did that, I re-used the old one to set it up for the quick connect. Now when we go dry camping, I carry both. Have the flexibility to use a 20 lb tank, or the onboard propane. The risk is that you can run out of onboard propane, be away, and find that your refrigerator is now out of gas as well.
Everything is a tradeoff in camping!

That is exactly what I did to my Champion 2500W. Love it and it works well to charge my batteries. I wish I could run my AC with it. Since it has a max output of 1650W while using propane. My AC even with an MicroAir Easy Start installed. I you could find a way to adjust the voltage I would be greatly interested. I think if I drop voltage down to 115V or maybe 110V, it may get me there. I think in the summer when I tested my AC, I need around 1750W. I was told gas the genset will put out 1850W, so that will work in a pinch. Thank You for your videos.

We have the Champion 4500 dual fuel. It appears to have a propriety quick connect on the generator. Normally we use a 20 lb propane tank when using this. However, we purchased a propane hose extension which I feed up to tap into one of the 30 lb tanks on the RV. We did not want to use the quick connect because when I did rig it up that way it was pulling too much gas while running when we also wanted to run the burners on the stove or grill. This way we have separate isolated source of propane that will not impact the other.

I have a Champion 4500 watt dual fuel. I only use it with propane, though. I just bought a different hose without a regulator on it to go from the RV QD to the generator, but this didn't work because the regulator on the RV isn't high enough pressure or flow. The generator would initially fire, but quit after about a second.

I tried this a few years ago with the same generator. Initially Champion supported the idea, then they changed their policy.
With my generator the two regulators would not come apart. They were not screwed together. The connection between them was permanent.
The quick connection that goes into the generator is a unique design. I could not find a part that matched that I could use to build my own cable.
Perhaps things have changed. I’ll look into it again.
    Thanks for the video.

Thanks Jared! I also have a dual fuel Champion generator, but bleeding even the short propane line that comes with it is a pain, and I don't have a propane grill to do it faster. Between that and the fact that running on propane reduces the output by 10%, I think that I'm going to pass on this mod. We rarely run the generator all night any more since our battery capacity is now ample, and if we're not running it all night, it's simpler to just run it on gasoline. But if I did happen to want to run it all night, pulling one of our two 30# propane tanks to run the generator off propane would be simpler than having yet another hose to store.

question, if you were not using the onboard propane tanks, how would you safely transport them? as in transporting extra propane tanks for the generator. if not secured and stored properly propane tanks can be very dangerous. I too have a multi fuel generator and prefer using propane, but i have decided it would probably easier, safer to store and transport a couple extra gallons of gasoline than to make and bolt down a propane tank carrier. plus, the generator supposedly makes a little bit more power on gasoline. i only use ethanol free gasoline plus add a stabilizer in my small engines and have not had any carburetor problems in 7 years, knock on wood.

    Sorry, I'm not sold.
I tried my 17" Blackstone on 11"WC and the flame/heat was not acceptable for me. I don't have a propane generator. But I do use outside propane with my Camp Stove, Lantern, Blackstone, etc. None of these Items play nice with 1/2PSI (11" WC) of regulated propane. Since these appliances require between 10-20 PSI.
I ended up piping my outdoor propane port directly to the High side (pre-regulator) of my 2x30# tanks. Now, all of my "One Pound Bottle" appliances can use their specific regulator, and be happy.
I want to know more about that large round regulator-looking contraption connected to your generator and how it works. I'd like to know how that takes 1/2 PSI (11" WC) and powers the generator appropriately. Because the specs I see, on the propane generators, require approx. 10PSI (275" WC). I know this is a topic beyond the scope of channel, I'm not asking to get the answer here. My question has existed prior to this video. As others have said, "It's a mystery".
I still enjoyed the video and gained some insight. My reservation is using up my propane to run a generator. Which under load will only run 7-8 hours on a 30# tank. Mine gen is gas, so I refuel it from my 48 gallon truck tank, in an emergency. Propane is much more of a process to refill. IMO
    CHEERS!!

Using propane is good, but you didn't mention why you like it. Many folks just don't know why it's good. The primary benefit is you wont' have gasoline gunking up the carburetor when stored for a long time, such as through winter storage. Portable generators are famous for that, and using propane mitigates the threat of carburetor gunk clogging the jets.

For me, in addition to that, I carry the gennie inside the trailer or enclosed vehicle and don’t want the gasoline fumes.

My dual fuel Champion will not start with propane. I have to start the generator with gas. After a few minutes of running gas I can switch to propane and it starts right up. I'm using the short supply hose from Champion so I don't think air is the problem. I have cranked for 5-10 minutes on propane and it would not start until I ran it with gas first. I would rather not to have to bring gas just to warm up the generator. Any thoughts?

I pull a couple of times on propane, then switch to choke, pull, and it will run for a second. Switch back to propane, and it fires right up.

@@bradharber5750 I'll give it a try to see if it works on mine. Thanks.

Just to follow-up: I gave it a try and that does work. A couple of pulls on propane, over to choke, then back to propane and it fires up. That's great. Thanks for your input.

Was that not 2 regulators hooked together? Plus a regulator on the RV. Looks like 3 total. What if you just used a hose from the quick connect from the RV and hook it directly. into the generator? Just wondering.

How come you didn’t just cut the holes then use a crenppin tool and put another quick release on it or even a holes clamp
