Thanks for watching! For anyone who is new to the channel, we have bought a new Gladiator Camper Truck that will be launched in the UK in January. Until then the company have loaned us the camper you see in this video (which we are super grateful for). The upgrades you see in this video, most of them we can switch to our camper when it arrives. The rest are upgrades the company wanted anyway. Hope the explains it x
Hi guys. I think the system would be so much better if it was designed to fit a single cab pickup instead of a twin cab. Why would you want seats? I'll bet you just pile stuff on them. Just imagine how much more space you would have in the back. And where the base of the seats are could be huge storage compartments or some draws too? What do you think guys 🤔 😊
I was going to ask how getting upgrades for a loaned vehicle was going to work. Whether you’d be taking them off again or the rental company would be keeping them and offsetting the cost somehow. The wheels and tyres look great, they definitely be something I’d want to keep or replicate on the truck you are buying.
I hate to put a downer on you trip but that clothing will never cope with extreme cold. If you can find a Fjallraven shop please go there and ask their advice. I recommend their Expedition Down jackets with a wicking base layer and natural wool mid layer. If you get stuck, run out of diesel your clothing choice will probably save your lives. Be safe guys and have a great adventure.
Agree 100% on the wool. There’s a lot of second hand Fjällräven to bought on Blocket or Finn, I hope they consider that (second hand is normally ok for the vegans I know personally)
Our Winter Survival technique is to drive to Portugal after spending the last 2 winters in the UK! We're done with the cold, even watching the UK makes us feel the chill 😂
First of all, let me say I'm really happy for you both and I wish you very happy travels. I don't mean to join all those who give endless lists of things you should be aware of or tell you you're in a wrong vehicle because I believe you are in the right vehicle for you cos your chose it. Anyhow I just wanted to draw your attention to snow accumulating on the tailgate and preventing the door opening. As you are aware snow can be heavy and can drift so please bare this in mind when setting up for the night. Maybe park into the wind? Happy travels ❤❤❤
Its best to purchase cold weather clothing over there as they make it for their conditions. Skiwear is good, too - salopettes. Anything made from marino wool - Icebreaker underwear. Alpaca wool bed socks.
Explained more in the pinned comment of this video, but most of the stuff we can switch out to our one when it comes. The other stuff that has been upgraded, the company who loaned us this one wanted the upgrades anyway
@ThoseHappyDays I truly admire your spirit and have followed you guys for a couple of years now, can't wait to see how this pans out as myself like alot of followers think you have made a massive mistake in choice of vehicle and outfit, I do wish you both all the best and hope il proved wrong
How many product placements can you squeeze into one video? Come on guys you used to be worth watching. This is the third silly "van" you have shown us. So much spent on a loaner! Hard to believe you are serious van lifers now
Not criticising, but I wouldn’t trust clothing etc from mountain warehouse. My daughter went to Romania in the middle of winter to help with dog rescue. The coats and thermals she bought were totally insufficient, and it wasn’t as cold as where you guys are going. And the whole family have purchased the most expensive coats from there, and five coats at least the zips broke after a few uses, and came apart at the seems. Again I’m not picking or criticising you, just wanted to make you’re aware of their poor quality control so you both hopefully stay nice and toasty. Really exited to watching your upcoming adventure ❤️👍😊
I agree with the comments below about clothing. Also a couple of other items you may find you need are neoprene face masks for really cold -30C type temperatures. They really are worth it. We went skiing in Canada and it was an essential item to stop frostbite while skiing at altitude. Also, lightweight thermal gloves underneath padded mittens are much better than straight gloves for cold temperatures. Remember also that cold strikes up so you need very good socks and footwear. Ordinary snow boots designed for light snow will not be sufficient to keep your toes warm..... On a different note. We have just returned from a few weeks in Norway and temperatures there at the moment are ridiculously mild for the time of the year. In Alta, Narvik and Tromso the daytime temperatures were around 11C and night-time around 7C. May be that is just a glitch and they will return to normal by the time you get there. Be prepared. PS: You will find some very good second hand clothing stores in Norway that sell clothing designed for their climate.
Hi Guys, here's my points, I don't understand why you are paying out for 4x Tyres, lithium battery, new converter for a vehicle you're borrowing until your vehicle is ready to collect, not unless you are exchanging them over to your own vehicle once ready which will make sense.🤔🤓
It’s all looking fantastic, the tyres and wheels look awesome. I can’t wait for your trip to begin. So many people getting stressed out about your clothing choices 😵💫 There will certainly be plenty of opportunities to buy some warmer clothes on your trip if you need to. So excited for you. 🥰💖
@heatherrawls6015 the gladiators come with different specs. You can get the basic one and spend less money, or get it fully kitted out with lithium etc
Please take something like 5 seasons sleeping bags in case of total tech failure. Trace wire on fuel lines (like heated gloves) are a great idea. Gelled diesel and frozen oil in sump is no respecter of pre-heaters. Hyperthermia is no joke! Insulated slippers are a good alternative to unheated floors. Neste filling stations sell diesel down to minus 40. Good luck
I'm a bit worried after seeing your winter gear. Minus 40 is without wind chill and the wind can drop minus 10 or 20 degrees more....frostbite in minutes...you need down jackets and , mittens, and even snow pants....if you get stuck and have to dig out or if your heater stops working your clothes can save your life. (Even Eva ran into trouble up there and she's got loads of experience.) ...Wishing you the best.
Have a great adventure. I fear your winter clothing will not cut it though. Claims by manufacturers as regards to the level of minus their clothes are good for often fall a long way short. All the best to you both.
I live in a motorhome and get down to -15c in wintertime. I highly recommend you guys consider getting better winter clothing. Second hand wool/leather is considered ok by lots of vegans, and wool is infinitely better than polyester when it’s actually cold. I feel you are putting a lot of money into the car, and not nearly enough in high quality clothing. I’m worried for Janine 😭
I wish you well on your travels, Has Liam any experience with driving on snow or getting out of a drift? Im not sure that a60pound jacket is enough for the cold in Finland? the winter is much more harsh and dangerous than you can imagine, even lithium batteries dont like the cold. One last thing don't drain the power on your lithium batteries, if the cells go too low and the cells are at different levels you could damage the battery beyond recharging.
If you don't want to feel the cold at all you need to invest in Fjallraven clothing. What you have bought will not do the job, you will be freezing!!!! Get a Fjallraven coat, hat and gloves for starters.....you will not regret it even though it's pricey it's more than worth it.
Janine, you seriously need an electric throw... .. they're between £20-30 on ebay... and use very little juice... You won't regret it, I wouldn't be without one now... Really looking forward to you're next adventure ..... Keep well guys ❤😊

In severe weather the Mountain Equipment gear will not be up to the job, in my opinion. You need Goretex or equivalent and down. Good waterproofs are essential. In the end you get what you pay for and you need to take advice.
I’m so pleased that you reached out to True Blue Travellers (Jon and Jess are FABULOUS) for some much needed Arctic conditions advice. We can now look forward to your adventures! 🥶🎅🏻💙
Hi guys, just catching up on your videos. After buying the VW camper, can you please clarify why the VW was handed back? You don't actually give a clear reason. Thanks.
I assume based on the mods you’re doing you’ve bought the base vehicle? The Explorer? And the demountable will be swapped out once the new one is ready? I worry your trip to be honest Janine is cold even when it’s warm…
One thing i think i would probably take is a powerbank/jumppack in case of a flat or low battery and the pickup wont start. They are only cheap and can in weather conditions you'll be encountering litterally be a life saver. They are also extremely small especially considering the power they pack.
Hi there, Jannine is the one to be wearing ski trousers, as she is the one that feels the cold more so than you. Get her to try some, they are a game changer. Have a good adventure.
On those cold days, I wear my Norsari when I go for a walk and sometimes just to the store, here in Minnesota, USA (except for last winter when we didn't have a winter!). I've been north of the Arctic Circle only once, on a Hurtigruten cruise. Out on the deck it could get pretty chilly, especially with even a slight breeze (remember the wind chills!--you will sometimes want every inch of your face covered). It'll be nice to have a toasty truck camper for you to climb into! Oh, and when you have your ice cleats on, still walk carefully. I've had two different kinds. I don't know how it is for others, but if unbeknownst to you there's a patch of glare ice (like underneath a skimming of snow), you could still end up on your butt or worse. Have a great trip! I'll be watching!
The battery starting the van will be a problem in cold weather. When in Canada at -30 at my uncle’s they used to plug in the battery to their home electric otherwise it won’t start.
15 pound shoes are most likely not arctic spec. You'll no doubt have another arctic clothing haul. Jokkmokkguiderna has some arctic clothing videos, might be helpful.
Have you now checked the current consumption of the engine heater? Rest of your upgrades look good - on car programs I see them use engine battery jump packs which are about the size of a house-brick, but can start engines whose batteries are too cold or too old to crank them. Worth grabbing one to supplement your kit? Anyways, have a good week - see you next time!
Glad to see you're taking the cold challenge seriously 👍 I would have thought getting outfitted for Lapland would probably have been better nearer to Lapland as they probably have all the right gear but at least you have some stuff?! Anyeay, those wheels look awesome and I'm sure you're going to have a great time over there 😊🥂
last winter you took us to beautiful warm and colourful India, this year to the snow and ice. I am so excited for your next travels and looking forward to sharing the adventure; from the warmth of my cosy home
I put flannelette sheets on my bed in winter because you don't get the shock of cold cotton sheets when you get into bed and you warm up quicker. I also have a sherpa blanket that I put between me and the duvet if it gets very cold as I can't sleep in a warm room but I like my bed cosy. I have sleep apnoea so use a cpap machine with an airtight mask overnight and the humidifier warms and moistens the air which makes things more comfortable as well. I look like I'm about to get into a fighter jet rather than bed. It's normal for me to get dressed up in all the thermals you have to go out on my mobility scooter in winter. My favourite is my knee length waterproof, thermal coat. Stops my bottom from getting wet when it rains, didn't take me long to realise that short coats are a bad idea. I've never liked those silly rain capes that they sell for mobility scooter or wheelchair users. They are not very good and if you want to get up and use your crutches in a small wheelchair inaccesible shop they're such a pain to get out of and back in to. I did used to wear salopettes but that's overkill where I live now but ski gloves are perfect to keep your hands warm and a nice warm wooly hat is essential. ❤❤
Another fantastic vlog of the adventures & trouble Janine & Liam get into. Yes the cold weather is coming it's forecast to be -2 tomorrow in my area. Keep safe, warm and well and have a lovely week ahead. Love 🥰 the vlog and love 💓 Janine & ❤ Liam.
I'm surprised that you're going with big, heavy, bulky jackets rather than down-filled jackets which are lighter in weight, pack away much smaller and are much warmer. Same with your bedding. Your Aldi bedspread is nowhere near as practical and warm as a good down-filled sleeping bag. I'm aware cost might be an issue but it seems to me you are spending a king's ransom on gear that is questionable. I think I may have mentioned it in a previous comment but check out Chad's advice on his trip to the north of Alaska. You'll find a short series on his trip in a Sprinter van on Living the Van Life. There's also much good advice on things like tires, heater blocks and the vehicle necessities for ultra cold travel. Please check them out before you hit the cold.
How nervous do you get putting out a new video waiting for the responses? There are so many opinions and suggestions here. 😅 Happy to see that you are doing your best to prepare as best as you can. It’ll be interesting to see what you make of travelling through the Arctic in the end. 😊 Btw… you mentioned that you’re not used to driving in icy and snowy conditions. Over in Scandinavia that’s something you have to practice to get a drivers license and it’s a vital part. So I’m curious, what is it like over in the UK? I mean you get ice and snow there too, right, so is that part of training? You can have great tyres and all that but a lot has to do with how you handle the driving too. With speed, quick brake and all that.
This is another reason to rethink this vehicle as in a snow storm you might not be able to start the vehicle and may drain too much of the battery and get stuck where you are
Seriously going to the artic. I imagine you might need to change to a different grade of oil and coolent for going over there . Also a cover to cover the radiator on the front to give your vehicle a chance to heat up. It’s no joke heading over there
Remote engine start: if you’ve got more than one key, leave the spare in the vehicle and use the other to lock the vehicle. Wire-in a remote control switch to the engine start button. Have the remote control in the back so can start the vehicle engine and charge battery if need while still in the back.
I have watched mispronounced adventure, so I recommend you grow a moustache and beard to help protect your face, unfortunately Jannine will have to buy one lol.
Cooking inside without good ventilation , is dangerous . I recommend getting carbon monoxide monitor , so you’re not trapped in a small space with no clean air , and die . 👍
Oooooo !! It's getting SOOOO exciting - all your preps must be making it feel so real. Will you be away over Christmas or back in time to spend it with Family ?
Good luck on this epic trip hope that will janine will be warm enough this country is damp when its cold so the dry cold in the arctic may be easier to cope with and you maybe able to pick up some more ski clothing on your travels the choice is rather limited in the uk
As I've said before about Janine suffering with the cold, I'm the same I can wear a sweat shirt and a dressing gown and still feel chilled, with me it's poor blood circulation and not age related either...there are things you can do about it and I should have when I was younger.
@@ThoseHappyDays yeah im a mechanic you can switch everything to yours after, the only ball ache would be that water heater if the mechanic didn't keep your original pipe work and stuff....Good luck with your next adventure.......you do you

Btw. You’re not allowed to drive with those studs in Germany, and I’m pretty sure you don’t need them if you have chains. For the most part of Sweden we don’t get that much snow
Janine, I struggle in the cold, I live in the moors so gets really freezing. Just bought some ski trousers from lidl ofall places! It's so warm, have a quick look if u get chance. Good luck both of u, so excited for ur adventures ❄️
Liam, is the Lithium battery you bought fitted with an internal temperature sensor and low temp disconnect? If a lithium battery is charged when under 0C, the battery will be perminently damaged, and can easily result in fires. Generally lithium batteries also cannot be discharged under -20, so you will have to make sure that the battery compartment is always heated above zero ideally.
Surely you bought duel purpose tyres as in Snow tyres, theyre even the law in many areas of france in the winter but usually Snow tyres OR Chains not normally both !
Hi I hope ur well and warm, I see ur videos an think that what you are doing is extraordinary in ur new vehicle . I think you are really showing what is possible in a small habitable space. I have thought after seeing ur videos that what u do and how you doit can't be done. But every time I think nope they won't be able to live in that space (the car camping Berlingo) you have proven it can be done. I shall definitely follow ur next adventure with interest and wish you well. Oh BTW we have a 2016 motorhome she is a tiny little autosleeper nuevo called patsy and we love her to bits. Hi guys 👋 hubby and i have been watching your journey since the Morgan days. We love your content and watch your videos weekly. I pray come January you have your final perfect home/vehicle. Came to the comments to ask the same question but saw your pinned comment so thank you for answering that 😂. We have a travel channel, slightly different to yours @notravelsickness but we're only a year in. You're literally living our dream and once our children grow up and fly the nest we will also be embarking on our own 'off grid' life. Thank you for all of your information and insights on how to live 'van life' and we look forward to seeing your next video. Safe journey x
Love all the changes you’ve made to the van..and like your new clothes, thank you for explaining the upgrades and how that works with it being a rented vehicle…I did wonder! Can’t wait to see Finland! 🇫🇮 p.s: people keep telling you to wear down and wool - unaware you’re both vegan. I wore similar clothes to you in Iceland 🇮🇸 in their coldest/snowiest winter and was fine. I didn’t wear wool or down either as I too am vegan and was totally warm. Layering is most important. Safe trip guys x
I am curious about how the shell of the camper will hold up to extreme temps. Could it crack? Also, what would happen if someone walked by and closed the back gate on your truck? Is there a way to release it from inside the camper? IS the truck a diesel truck? Will you be taking extra fuel with you? We almost ran out of gas traveling in Canada from Calgary to Vancouver, the gas stations were not close together. Fortunately we found some road workers who had extra fuel cans and gave us enough to get to the next town.
Personally think you should get a One Tigris blanket for your bed it doesnt take up a lot of room and it can act as an emergency cover.Think wool when you think cold weather,im guessing as your vegan you wont want any sort of feather down . Have a nice trip xx great video
Thanks for watching!

Love the morning stepping out into the autumnal park at about 13 mins in, and the new wheels and tyres are to die for 🤩🤩🤩
Thank you so much, we are thrilled with them. Have a fab week ahead
The battery starting the van will be a problem in cold weather. When in Canada at -30 at my uncle’s they used to plug in the battery to their home electric otherwise it won’t start.
Hoping the pre-heater will help
15 pound shoes are most likely not arctic spec.
You'll no doubt have another arctic clothing haul.
Jokkmokkguiderna has some arctic clothing videos, might be helpful.
they look like fashion boots
@@TiredmumAlways bought them for my kids - they’re definitely not Arctic proof! 🙈
@@Bluebell117 are they the skecher ones?
Have you now checked the current consumption of the engine heater?
Rest of your upgrades look good - on car programs I see them use engine battery jump packs which are about the size of a house-brick, but can start engines whose batteries are too cold or too old to crank them. Worth grabbing one to supplement your kit? Anyways, have a good week - see you next time!
Wishing you both a fantastic time ,good luck x
Thank you so much!
Great tips 👌
This trip will be interesting to follow. Good luck with your adventure.
Thank you 🎉
Another fantastic vlog of the adventures & trouble Janine & Liam get into.
Happy to see that you are doing your best to prepare as best as you can. It’ll be interesting to see what you make of travelling through the Arctic in the end. 😊
Btw… you mentioned that you’re not used to driving in icy and snowy conditions.
A swap for those studded overshoes (which in my experience very soon wear down): Yaktrax - absolutely brilliant contraptions!
HELLO IT'S 5 AM IN AUS I'M DIZZY WATCHING YOU RUN AROUND. I PRAY ALL GOES WELL AND CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOUR VIDEOS GOING TO LAPLAND. STAY SAFE.❤
Guys I might have missed it but have you fitted a light bar or spot lights ? They will make life a lot easier
@wanderingwilcoxs our one will have something like you mentioned...but we have run out of time unfortunately
This is another reason to rethink this vehicle as in a snow storm you might not be able to start the vehicle and may drain too much of the battery and get stuck where you are
Hi both, I think your Teddy Bear bedding is being sold by Aldi. I agree it is fantastic and
very warm
Yeah it's probably sold everywhere
Very exciting guys 👍👍
Seriously going to the artic. I imagine you might need to change to a different grade of oil and coolent for going over there . Also a cover to cover the radiator on the front to give your vehicle a chance to heat up. It’s no joke heading over there
Remote engine start: if you’ve got more than one key, leave the spare in the vehicle and use the other to lock the vehicle. Wire-in a remote control switch to the engine start button. Have the remote control in the back so can start the vehicle engine and charge battery if need while still in the back.
I’m sooo excited. Can’t wait to see your adventures. Your truck is looking amazing 😊
Thank you!!
Looks like you thought of everything. Let's go!!
I have watched mispronounced adventure, so I recommend you grow a moustache and beard to help protect your face, unfortunately Jannine will have to buy one lol.
putting those tyres on has now decreased your mpg even further to about 18, not being negative but just bear it in mind
Your coat looks cosy Janine. Also that bedding is amazing xx
Thank you! The bedding is Janinez new favourite thing
Cooking inside without good ventilation , is dangerous . I recommend getting carbon monoxide monitor , so you’re not trapped in a small space with no clean air , and die . 👍
Good luck Liam and Janine! You seem all ready for the trip and I’m looking forward to it!
Yay!! Winter preparations looking great guys!!
Janine you and all your thermal wear make me smile! I’m glad you’re taking lots or warm layers ❤
Oooooo !! It's getting SOOOO exciting - all your preps must be making it feel so real. Will you be away over Christmas or back in time to spend it with Family ?
We are aiming to be in lapland for Christmas
You’re all set up for your wonderful adventures. I’m looking forward to following you both around ❤
Thanks so much! 😊
Wrexhamis my home town,
And Acton park is lovely
Good luck on this epic trip hope that will janine will be warm enough this country is damp when its cold so the dry cold in the arctic may be easier to cope with and you maybe able to pick up some more ski clothing on your travels the choice is rather limited in the uk
Get some wristlets I found them ninja when I was in Norway artic training
As I've said before about Janine suffering with the cold, I'm the same I can wear a sweat shirt and a dressing gown and still feel chilled, with me it's poor blood circulation and not age related either...there are things you can do about it and I should have when I was younger.
Camper looking well prepared for Lapland.
Should be all sorted now hopefully
Great watching the buildup to this adventure. Thx
So looking forward to watching your new adventure. ❤
Ohhh great vid guys! Looks like you got the clothes sorted.. enjoy 😊
We think we might be there (we hope)
If your paying for this sounds like alot if money to put in a rental. Enjoy your travels be safe.
We've paid for stuff that can be switched over to our camper when it arrives. The rest the company wanted eg the suspension
The owner of that truck must absolutely love you pair the amout you have spent on his vehicle
A lot we can switch to ours when we get it
@@ThoseHappyDays yeah im a mechanic you can switch everything to yours after, the only ball ache would be that water heater if the mechanic didn't keep your original pipe work and stuff....Good luck with your next adventure.......you do you
@@Thewanderingdan It can hopefully be swapped as I think that they are getting an identical Gladiator with the larger de-mountable.
@@petercornish9903 yeah it can be swapped, anything can be done if you have the money
@@ThoseHappyDays I thought you'd bought the truck and just had the demountable on loan.....confused 😂
Recommend getting some silk glove and sock liners- really make a difference at those temps!!
You guys are braving it for sure, good luck to you, you're doing it your own way, which we applaud👍 We used Rogue Alloys and Fogstardrift too, really good stuff. Looking forward to seeing the trip develop 👍
Yeah it's important to get the best for sure
Btw. You’re not allowed to drive with those studs in Germany, and I’m pretty sure you don’t need them if you have chains. For the most part of Sweden we don’t get that much snow
I wish you two all the best on your adventures. Looking forward to some great vids.
Thanks so much!
Janine, I struggle in the cold, I live in the moors so gets really freezing. Just bought some ski trousers from lidl ofall places! It's so warm, have a quick look if u get chance. Good luck both of u, so excited for ur adventures ❄️
Get one of those heater plugs to plug into the jackery they are amazing...
It's indoors so shouldn't be a problem. And it's a high isolation unit which we intend to keep warm all the time
The battery has an internal heater, you would hope he knows that..
Surely you bought duel purpose tyres as in Snow tyres, theyre even the law in many areas of france in the winter but usually Snow tyres OR Chains not normally both !
Can't wait for your adventure ❤
Same 😊❤
You are ready!! I want to do a winter trip next year. Not as extreme as yours though.
Where you thinking?
@ThoseHappyDays southwest US, nothing as extreme as your trip. It's too hot there in the summer.
Look after each other God bless safe travelling.
Thank you friends. For educating me ❤ can’t wait for the North with you guys 💪😳😃🤗👌🇬🇧
Thanks for watching and joining us
Hi guys 👋 hubby and i have been watching your journey since the Morgan days.
So exciting to follow your uncoming adventures ❤.
As a Canadian ...I did smile so much watching your video...if you get here don't buy Tim Hortons coffee it is awful.
IMO you need another switch for the pre-heater in the living quarters so you can pre-heat before leaving home
Haha yeah that's not a bad idea
@@ThoseHappyDays Including a warning light to tell you it is on so you don't accidentally flatten your battery
Can’t wait for next week! Love all the upgrades and the clothing haul! Xx
Yay! Thank you!
Just come back or somewhere not so extreme if it seems too much…where ever you are you make great vids
❤how exciting soon be off on ur travels again cant wait to tag along
👌❄️🥶
A Hilux would have been the better choice. Can not see a ranger surviving the artic.
Bless you Both and happy travels great channel Best wishes for the future ❤
Thank you so much!
