Magic School bus!!! I love your videos! I really feel comforted by your amazing amount of knowledge and you are one of my favorite sources of GOOD plant care info. Just want to let you know that you have totally impacted my life positively with your plant videos. I thank you a million times over for creating such an amazing channel with awesome information!
I needed this video earlier because the one I had died maybe because I didn't give it enough light. Grrr. I haven't decided if I want to purchase another one to try it again. Thank you for this video. Keep those videos coming please.
I have one! Thanks for these tips because I underwater it and as a result the leaves did die back this fall. However, new leaves are coming in so I'll be sure to give it more water. It flowered last summer and they absolutely do smell like vanilla :-)
Lots of great info as usual. I just got mine from Amazon. Amazing looking plant. I put it under a grow light since my house doesn't have a good sunny window.
Seatbelts, everyone! is what I imagine she says when you transplant and separate her pups. I have a cluster of A. humilis and of all the other popular albucas people have and show in videos, care for A. spiralis most closely matches mine.
I love my sizzle sister! Thanks for the info, her ends are going brown and I think I’m under watering her. She’s super tall so maybe I’ll up the water by a few days and see what happens. Ty!
Love the name! Takes me back to a more innocent time. Anyways, this plant is on my wish list- I only wish you’d included some soil information about it. Thanks so much for your videos!!
My daughter bought one of these for me last summer. I couldn’t keep it alive. The leaves straightened out. It was a huge bummer. I have a ton of house plants... I think maybe not enough light for me.
They like a cactus soil. Indirect light and they also have a summer dormancy that most people would think it’s dying and unfortunately will over water it and it rots.
I researched and read that this plant is originally from the desert area of South Africa. There, the summers are hot and scorching hot and the winters are cooler and has a little rain. As a result, the Albuca spiralis looks dead in the summer months. But when the days get shorter and there is more rain, the Albuca spiralis starts its active growing season. I bought my plant in early May and per my typical routine, I researched the plant so the dying foliage did not surprise me. Starting about late July, there were no leaves at all. Zero. For all practical purposes, it looked like I had an empty 4” pot that needed to be tossed away. Today, out of curiosity, I dug up the bulb. The bulb was firm and I saw a healthy looking long root system which had started circling along the bottom interior perimeter of the pot. With this being native to the desert, I wonder if the roots grow downward to keep from drying out. It looked like it needed a deeper pot so I scrubbed clean and recommissioned a narrow diameter 12” pot, put in generous amount of broken glass from a shattered water glass that I had tumbled smooth and added in some sand & succulent mix. I planted the bulb and will see what happens as I try to replicate the growing conditions of the part of the world it came from.
I got a baby Frizzle about a month ago, the shoots and roots are definitely growing. When should I expect the shoots to start curling? They're completely straight.
Reminds me of my Bowea with the big base. Only on the Bowiea the bulb sits on top of the pot soil. It also has a pretty wild growth habit. And it is also from South Africa. I have wanted a Frizzle sizzle fr awhile now. They are so very cool.
I was recently gifted one of these (via mail). I live in WI and a couple weeks after I received it, the tips went brown. Someone told me they go dormant in the summer in northern states. Thoughts?
I just got one of these about 2 months ago. The leaves grew REALLY fast but went almost completely straight with a slight curl on the ends. I’ve noticed recently that the bulb looks cracked. Any idea what that could be?
Mrs. Frizzle is the first thing I thought of when I saw this plant! I bought mine this summer and I live in Washington. The light is great in the summer, but as we enter the "darker times", I am worried about my plant. Anything I can do besides buying a grow light? Love this video, by the way!!
I love this plant , but I need help , I just got to know this plant , so I don't know much about it, my question is when it goes dormant , how do you care for it ? do you bury the bulb in soil and keep it in a dark place without water until winter ? please help , thank you
I would like to know if that bamboo grow shelf is self-made or what is the product name if you purchased it? I have a frizzle sizzle and its growing leggy, losing its curl.
Mrs. Frizzle is lovely! Plant care request: Calathea! I've had two: pinstripe (lost to spider mites) and my current Calathea Medallion. She's still in tact, but each leaf is turning brown and crispy around the edges. I have a humidifier right next to her. Not sure what more I can do. Thanks for the awesome videos, Kevin!
@Epic Gardening Great video, thanks :) I have a question though. How often do you water it in the dormancy period during summer, if you water it at all? I just got mine, and I'm growing it in a USDA zone 7b-8a (Denmark), so naturally I grow it indoors.
Good question. I have one that just finished flowering. My plan is to give it a little sip of water maybe every couple of weeks and to keep the light on it. I have no idea if that is a good plan. Maybe Kevin can help us. :)
My plant has very tall leaves not squatty like yours. I have to stake the leaves up or they just fall down. 2nd year blooming though. The leaves are about 1 1/2 foot tall. Do I continue to stake it or just let the leaves fall down?
I bought one for a very sweet online friend and I need to ship it from Oklahoma to Louisiana ……would the plant survive this time of year? It’s Mid-June…..I’ll ship priority for sure….
Hey Kevin, Totally got to have this plant. Will be on the look out. Thanks for the info on the care !! I've been watching the reboot of Magic School Bus on Netflix...I think. Great channel, keep up the good work!!
I bought one of these this spring, it flowered beautifully, now ( Oct ) some of the lower, curly leaves are going brown but there’s a ton of new shoots the went straight up and are now starting to curl. How do I give it the cool period to flower again the spring? OR do I just let it do it’s thing in the window. I’m in zone 3 so outdoors isn’t an option. Thanks, really enjoy your vids!
It comes from the area of South Africa with winter rainfall and dry summers. So coolish to moderate temperatures in winter (sunny window in a cool room will do, or under grow lights) with a drop at night, as much sun as it can get (or high light intensity with grow lights) and when the foliage dies back after flowering, allow to go bone dry in its pot until early fall when it will naturally sprout again after a warm dry summer rest.
Hi, I'm in need of advice. I got mine as a bulb dry roots and no leaves they died in shipping. I don't know if mine will live because it's roots are dead bulb isn't soft or anything. Will it live?
I just realized that the flower was causing mine to brown, and I just recently snipped it. Flower actually sprouted pretty high. Is there anyway to save it and make the leaves produce again?
I would love to find one of these, I love the name and the only way I will know if I can grow it or not is to get one and try my luck. Thanks for sharing Kevin, very interesting cool plant. Hope you have a wonderful day, hugs, bye for now.
I bought my FS last summer and it was doing great! Well, it still is except it's no longer compact. The leaves are now all over 12" tall and I have to have them tied and staked. Do you know if this is normal? Mine is getting very bright direct light, so I don't feel it's lack of light... It just finished blooming - sent up a beautiful spike! Thanks for any tips on why mine is so tall ~ Debbie in WA Ü
I have a question - I got one of these as a gift about 6 months ago and it grew significantly for a couple months then stopped and did nothing then started browning at the ends and then kept browning and then went all the way brown and died…or so I thought. When I went to clear out the pit I realized it had developed a rather large bulb which was not there when I got it - it was sent to me in a bag with a very small bulb that hardly looked like a bulb at all, I didn’t even realize it was a bulbed plant until I went to clear the pot so now I have this bulb that I don’t know what to do with. If there is a chance I can pot the bulb and bring the plant back I want to. I hate to let it go. I just don’t know how to go about giving it a chance. I read that they go dormant in the summer and should not be watered at all? Any advice? Thanks 🙏
Mine started getting reddish brown ends but it was growing really tall and there were many new curls growing. I couldn’t tell if it was trying to go dormant or maybe I didn’t water enough. I hate that I don’t know what’s wrong with it.
I have one that’s been doing great, until now. It still looks good but it has tiny brown bugs. Any idea on what it is and how to get rid of them? Tried neem oil and tried dishsoap w water and alcohol. They haven’t gone away. Been trying to wash them off everyday. 😩
I have one of these, and I seem to have two parts to it: I have the curly part that is doing quite well--nice and curly and green. Then behind that, I have a shoot that has nothing on it...it's just a "pole" with the beginnings of spirals at the top, but it has turned about 60% brownish in the last few months. It's in high light (we live in Texas, so light is not a problem). Should I trim back the brown part? Should I water it more? Feed it? It's not root bound. I water about once every week and a half or when the soil feels dry about an inch down. Will you get back to me? Thanks!
Mine started turning brown 3 days after I brought it home from the nursery. The stems are also starting to head down award instead of straight up. It doesn’t have a yellow flowering thing in the middle. It been damp since I bought it, and not sure if this is normal??
My frizzle sizzle has some leaf/stem movement. I put it outside in the sun for the daytime and lately some leaves are flopping over a bit but they slowly go back up when I bring them inside. I have read of these plants being “moody” when moved or replanted. Any advice on this movement? Thanks!
If it’s a plant, it *has* to propagate. Otherwise, it would become extinct. I will guess that it propagates by seed (since it flowers) and / or since there seemed to be a new 2nd plant growing next to the big main plant, maybe also by new (?) bulblets?
Hi @epicgardening, Maybe you can help me. I purchased 2 albuca spiralis bulbs in spring. With minimal instructions, I planted them together, bulb above the soil of course. They started growing in the summer. Now the leaves are 6-8inches long. They are in an large East facing window with great morning light, but the leaves are straight😢. I only water (a tiny bit) when they flop over. Is there any help or hope for the spiral curls to appear? A large East and a tiny West window are all I have. TIA💚🌱
If under watered my Yucca once leaves curled upwards, soaked it wet and revived fully, i like it when i can just get away with soaking only every 1 or 2 month's and being able to ignore plants.
Love the Magic school bus reference! My poor frizzle sizzle is not happy & I’m not sure how to fix. It’s under a grow light, I only water occasionally, but it’s got several leaves going fully brown & droopy. Any ideas or tips?!
Snap! I've received mine via post today...All the leaves look like limp chives very long, some are also completely brown. I'm going through all the posts to see if there's an answer.
I am new to your channel so I really do not know what plants you have but I am interested in getting Peperomia Frost, String of Turtles, Piper Parmatum, Episcia Silver Skies, so if you have any of these plants I would love to learn more about them so if you could do a small video on any of these I would love to watch it. Thank you. Your Frizzle Sizzle is beautiful & I love the name of it too.
Hello! Thank you for this video. I have a frizzle sizzle that had about a 14-16 inch flower spike that has now turned all brown, which I assume means it's going into dormancy. Do I cut back the spike or just leave it? Thanks!
Do you water in the summer? I read that you only water in winter and cut the flower off in summer as all the curls are browning. Picked up at a local nursery and care directions are not helpful. Have had it inside but moved to outdoors after reading several articles.
i got a bulb for each of my 4 grand kids. for their first plant to grow themselves. thanks for the tips!
U can just talk about plant all day 😘 I'll listen

So good!
My daughter chose this plant for herself on a trip to Rogers Garden. She named it "Curly Fry"

Give a basic cactus mix!

Miss Frizzle ;)
Time for a field trip!!!!! .... with the frizz no wayy!!
Just got one. Thanks for the info 👍🏼😀
Very pretty.
I recently tried albuka seedlings.
I'm worried about whether I will grow it well.
I'm a beginner.
Love your channel . Do you let the Albuca die off seasonally or just continually grow it? It looks totally awesome
Just planted seeds of three different species today. Hopefully they will germinate in the next ten to fifteen day.
Hi!Can you tell me the care needs and watering needs during the dormancy, should you water it and how often?
"You're not going to run into any pest issues"... he said as I was cutting off a leaf with mealy bugs on it. 😂
Whimsical plant art 💚
What would you do once the stalk has grown and the bloom is complete?? Cut or leave it?
Very cool plant. Now I'm on the search for one. 💚
LOVE this lady. Must find one n get it. Thank you for showing this one. It's adorable.

I just bought 4 on clearance for 50 cents!!!! There all tiny to small size. I live in Zone 9. Should I put outside or inside. In a pot altogether?❤

Yes there is...it's on Netflix. Updated and everything!! I'll probably binge watch the first few episodes. Glad I knew and ...ENJOY!!!
