    I was so excited to see this video pop. Its just so fascinating howafter such a long period of no water they just bounce back, plump up and start growing. Im so glad you were inspired by my video and did one of your own. Thank you so much for linking to it.. I appreciate that so very much Lyn :) I loved watching your plants do what mine are also doing right now. Sharing the experience of growing such wonderful plants with people from all over the world makes me so happy. Have an amazing day!

    something i think about when a plant doesn't respond completely to the first heavy watering, it's roots have dried out and it has to grow new ones to respond. so i don't waterlog it repeatedly(by mistakenly thinking it needs more water) for fear it may rot. many cactus will grow surface roots to take advantage of sporadic rains, so i give them time to regrow roots before i try watering again.

      Thats so true Bob :-D I have had that happen with a few of mine in the past with the roots and I have had to re pot into fresh soil and give them more time :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful Wednesday XXXXX

    Hi Lyn! Lovely video on the Before and After watering Opuntia Prickly Pear Cacti. These cacti were really desperate for a little water, poor cacti! It is amazing the great difference of how they plumped up after a little water! Enjoy your evening Lyn and Hans! Sending you lots of love!

      haha Sylvia :-D they were so shrivelled and it was amazing to give these wrinkly Opuntias a good drink to fatten them back up again, they are looking very wrinkly again now and I am itching to give them some water and may give them a drink in the next week or two, the Opuntias are more tolerant of being watered at this earlier time of year than the other Desert cacti are, I wish drinking water would plump out my skin like it does with these Opuntias hahaha,:-D thanks so much Sylvia for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Malta for an awesome afternoon

    The first watering of the season, do you include fertilizer in that watering? Or do you wait till the next watering?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 роки тому

      Hi Bennie :-D yes I use fertiliser with the first watering, and I will be giving the cacti the first watering today and will film a video for today, and I love to use tomato feed as the high potash helps to encourage more blooms, I normally use half the strength of tomato feed that they recommend using for tomatoes on my cacti, but with the first watering of the year I use just quarter of the strength, so the plants can get adjusted slowly to the watering and feed, thanks so much Bennie for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

    My (indoor) opuntia is looking so shriveled and sad, despite having had water. Dropped all its ears too. Will there be a good chance they come back from that? All my other cacti are fine and in the same spot, only the opuntia is looking like it's time to prepare funeral arrangements.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 роки тому

      Hi there, so sorry to hear about your Opuntia, it can be normal for them to shrivel during Winter but it can sometimes be caused by other things like hidden insect pests like Mealy bugs that hide in between the pads and roots, if there are no signs of any insect pests then I would remove it from the pot its in and check that the rots have not rotten to be on the safe side, good luck with your Opuntia and thanks so much for watching XXXX

    I live in Los Angeles and it rains in the winter months. I leave most of my cactus outside and they get winter rain. The minimum temperature this winter was 40F. The only plants that do not get any winter rain are the Lithops. I will not water the Lithops until last years' leaves are gone. I like the fact that you grow your plants in the greenhouse during the winter and do not water until the spring. I only have two seasons and not four seasons.

      I just use tongs to toss mine into a McDonald's drink carrier (the moulded recycled pulp ones)and toss that onto a fresh soil pile, either for indoor in a pot, or outdoor for the rest of the season. The pulpy mush from water is easy to push new delicate roots into as well as help hold a bit of extra moisture for a short time. Just make sure the pads are topside up or if they lay down the top half is elevated above the "bottom".
      I've had some i didn't think were going to make it, but laying on their sides started rooting (more root potential spots = more root improvement with small root growth) and got healthy again, so I pulled it off it's side and stood it up and so far (overwinter) it has grown a matched pair of bunny ears. I will have to trim the new growth off when moving outside because they are not getting enough light indoors to get regular pancake shaped pads. But since it was almost dead they don't hurt for now and help the base get healthier to grow well when moved back outside.
      I was trying to get them to root indoors before this winter and they just kept melting, drying out completely and or turning into petrified pieces. I was going to throw them away and that's how they got into the drink carrier and started trying to root after being rained on while tossed on top of the garage's garbage can lid. They were rescues from someone else and mostly dead when I got them.
      Also I'm sure the similar type of egg cartons would work well for smaller cacti.
      It was just a happy accident annnnnd keeps me from having to pot them "hands-on" i had enough of that trying different ways to save them before the McDs carrier...
      Next i need to figure out how to keep them from collecting my hair like some creepy stalker, they may start life wearing hair nets🤷‍♀️ lol

    I have an absolute fascination with the opuntia cacti. Especially the humifusa. I live in America and I saw on one growing at a restaurant and I stopped to ask the manager for a cutting and I got one. 😊

    Great video lyn. I have a question tho, aren’t the opuntias winter hardy? I heard that you can plant them in your garden and not worry about rot or them freezing? Is that true, do you have any experience with that?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  5 років тому

      Hi there :-D Some Opuntia's are very winter and cold hardy if they can be kept dry over the Winter, but because I live in a very wet climate with high humidity I have to overwinter them inside the polytunnel, but if you live in an Arid climate you can grow them in the garden and they can take very low winter temperatures if plantd in a very well draining position and protected from rain and humidity, it can depend on where you live in the world, but here in Ireland and UK ( except the south of UK ) its a definite no to grow them in the garden :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a sunny Sunday today XXXX
