I watched this movie by chance on Tubi. It was 3 am and I was fighting insomnia. I was fortunate to avoid watching anything about it beforehand. Noe is an incredible director. He knows how to film the rawness of human nature....the kind we don't want to admit exists. Definitely give it a watch if haven't yet.

Total Atheist here and I can say that I've had two major reflections on death in my life. One after going to my first funeral as a child and first really learning of death. I completely freaked out and was terrified of worms eating me. I was eventually calmed by being told that I can be frozen when I die.
Oddly enough I kind of just decided that dying must be like being born in that I won't be aware of it.
So I kind of never really thought about death much again after that.
Far later in my life I was bodily hid by a car going about 30+ mph. Thankfully it was a low-slung car and I pretty much just bowled over the top of it but I did indeed think that I was going to die in that moment and my life did appear to flash before my eyes. It felt like a vivid awareness of who I was along with who and what parts of my life brought me to this moment.
It was like a snapshot that kind of told me that this is who you are in case you have to remember it, lol.
I'd wager that it was just the results of a powerful shot of adrenalin juicing through my brain. Still it kind of made me feel that ever day I lived after that was a gift.

That's a very beautiful film. I really like the ambiguity of the ending. I think it really doesn't matter whether he reincarnated as his sister's child or not, I wouldn't say he broke his promise either as he will always be part of her life and memories. The same goes for all of us. What happens, if anything does, after your life has ended has no bearing on those who remain and whatever happens will do so either way for yourself.
People might forget your face, your voice, even the things you've done together but they will never forget how you made them feel when they think of you.

I wouldn't say the film ending with his own birth necessarily means death. I'm not aware if it's an existing belief in religion, but you could interpret it as him reincarnating as himself, about to repeat his life. Not necessarily carrying over his previous knowledge or experiences, but still a possibility of a life that can conclude differently.

  • @andresi2002

The movie also has themes of Freudian concepts. Maybe by accident, or maybe Freud took from the same source material.
Sigmund Freud spoke about concepts like the Oedipus Complex, the unconscious desire to bed your mother. Oscar had something similar; as when Linda began to breast feed, Oscar was left out. This lead to him gaining an oral fixation, smoking a lot. When he has sex with Victor's mom, he sucks on her breasts, and this brings him back to when he was a baby.
We also understand that Oscar had a love for his sister that may have been more than just platonic. This may have been because when his mother died, the only other person who could fulfill his Oedipus Complex was Linda.
It's possible Oscar chose to reincarnate as Linda's child due to a Freudian need to return to his mother's womb.

I had to gasp, not out of stress nor fear, but relief, I’ve been working on a series that tackles this issue, and I must say thank you, although it feels me with joy of knowing how people’s hope even those who may sin the most still lives deep in us, but unfortunately there’s no such thing as these in death, but simply death, and hope for people to embrace the truth of death and that by doing so the world could actually be a much better place, ik most are not if none gonna see my comment and that’s ok, but if you do, let love shower you with truth, God Bless!

      @haxcrossoverit 4 місяці тому +2

@@Oddragnar I’m no arbiter of truth, lots of people have died around me, but I was the one that died in the spiritual realm, I don’t often like to talk about it, due to the fact that what is now good for me may not be for others and that’s fine, I’m still in the process of healing the many wounds, unfortunately it’s not all as easy as it seems, but hey I guess you can say I’m getting there, truth is not as easy as it seems to follow and I’m another sinner just like the most of us, reasons why I’m no* arbiter, bc the arbiter is God itself and its teacher I guess you could is its son, I just believe that getting past the sad and cruel reality of understanding and accepting death for what it is, took me over a month of mental pain, yes I was that low, I locked myself in my room and dealt with all my inner demons for all that, and I wish I was making this up, from everyone saying I was gonna commit suicide knowing well I would never, to seeing those who care most for me as literal monsters, I even left my job without any weeks notice and simply abandoned myself, the only thing I sort of regret is making my mom cry, and not feel any emotions, until I finally made it out and started living again, my story isn’t anything new, but I believe one day I could try and save an entire world, the war isn’t the physical, but the mental battles and confusion we all have that drives to do unfortunate things like killing one another and rage over tiny little things, but hey I’m well aware that’s probably a bit of a farfetched reality, even though I choose truth I can still have dreams of my own and perhaps even fantasies, but at least I no longer dwell in them, or at least I try not to, I can now notice them earlier than later and that in itself allows me to keep moving forward, bc in the end that’s all it takes, I’ve stumbled a lot and now with someone in my back even more, but hey, the true ending is not at the end, is where you currently at, build and make a beautiful garden, work hard and keep sharing the great fruit of your hardwork, and perhaps one day more will come in need and rejoice of all you’ve done, in the world I live in now, there no such thing as past or future, sure they’ll never go away and stop trying to bother me, but the present keeps reminding me of my true path, hopefully I could one day have my girlfriend which is asleep at the moment wake up and see all the beauty there is, but not the one created by my hands, but the will of God itself, all the love that was put into it, that’s truly what I care about, not of my own will, but of God’s, and btw, the one last thing I’ll mention is that God is equal love, that’s the whispered word that came to me at my lowest low, and suddenly change my life forever, and yes Love is everything, the more you get into the more you’ll see the truth of the world and only then, you’ll understand my words are not forsaken, and btw I didn’t even make all of these up, there’s a bible which I also read all throughout, and is basically humans coming to an end of what is truth and fighting the lies and fantasies of the unknown world as of then, first we had to sin to become saints of the Lord, it sucks, but like Jesus said, “God forgive them, they just don’t know what they’re doing” neither do I btw and ask for forgiveness almost everyday, bc our only guide to a peaceful life is God(Love) and yeah I’m sorry this been gone for such a long rant, but since you asked I really wanted express myself, I’m no better than you, and if you read thanks for taking your time to do so, not many people do so, thanks and let Love guide you, thanks!

@@haxcrossoverit I am glad you are feeling better. Have you ever researched NDE (Near Death Experience)? There are thousands of registered testimonies from all over the world, documented by the NDERF (Near Death Experience Research Foundation, a non-biased, non-religious organization) and they seem to point in the same direction. The events, the visions, the experiences, everything is extremely similar to each other, making it really hard to believe they are just making this up. The good side is that beyond the veil seems much better than we all could ever imagine it to be, and it mimics the interpretation of Paul in Corinthians 2:9: "But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him."

There are many atheist versions of Buddhism. There are even atheist versions of Hinduism (like Carvaka). Christianity is another matter. Technically there have been atheist 'Christians', but they were basically just deists, which is basically just a very watered down theism that largely negates any potential for a religion, or pantheists, which does the same but coming from the other direction. If you want a western philosopher to look up who identified as a pantheist, try Baruch Spinoza (although some have claimed he was more of a panentheist, the belief that god extends beyond the universe as well). Among eastern traditions, you can check out Daoism, Advaita Vedanta or Won Buddhism, though keep in mind that these are all full fledged religions with their own practices and customs despite their pantheistic core belief. Laozi (Daoism) is probably the best of them imo, given his inherently egalitarian philosophy and critique of authority. The channel Philosophy in Motion gives some animated renditions of some of his stories.

The ending of the movie I see it as Oscar "reincarnating", but actually he, just like every living being, is trapped on a metempsychosis in the circle of suffering trying to actually escape, yet having to repeat all of this over and over again.
As for videogames, I think the Main Theme and Ending Theme of Shin Megami Tensei IV encapsulates this perfectly, so I hope you can play it sooner or later Max, and yes, it is recommended that you get ALL the endings to get the whole picture, besides there's extra stuff that is New Game + exclusive, besides the DLC.

The Tibetan Book of the Dead actually explicitly says, that the dead can stay in the earthly realm for several days and even weeks to watch how their friends and relatives react to their death. The book also explicitly says that you will relive critical moments of your past life. So the movie is pretty accurate in its depiction. So I don't think the movie even tries to depict the Peaceful and Wrathful Deities at all.

I believe a third interpretation can be read from that ending- he lives again as himself. Reincarnating as himself once more. Whether he'll have his memories or not, or if this is a "second chance" is moot. The process cleansed his soul and is ready to live again, taking in the horrors of life to experience the joy. Just as mentioned in the video, he chose life, in whatever form it'll come.
This also has the double effect of satisfying the promise to his sister, and always being there for her and plays to another idea in philosophy from Friedrich Nietzsche regarding a Faustian deal: would you be happy relieving your life over and over again for all of eternity?

@@LuisSierra42 Sometimes it's useful to have the author provide an alternate interpretation. For instance, if most people jump onto a certain interpretation (usually the most obvious one), the author can shake things up by asserting a different one. They still have standing, so people will give credence to their take. It doesn't make that interpretation the definitive one (none is), but it does help avoid one interpretation crowding out all others. Which is much better for the discourse.

This is the first time I've heard about this movie, and I'm glad you brought it up. It looks beautiful.
Idk if anyone brought this up to you, but I definitely recommend Garage: Bad Dream Adventure. It was remastered and a PC port and really leans into Jungian psychology a lot. I played it and stuck with me since.

I have a lot of admiration for Gaspar Noe, but I've never seen a single movie of his more than once and probably never will. They always make me feel very sickly kind of emotions that take a long time to go away. It disturbs me that someone exists who constantly has this kind of creative impulse floating around their mind. He seems like a person that lives in an extremely grim world. I could be wrong though. Sometimes people themselves are very different from the art that they create. I know that I'm drawn to dark stories, but I'm a pretty light-hearted and happy person in general. That said, the writing that I do does actually reflect my personality. It lacks some of my more jovial nature except where my prose wanders into a more cynical take on humor, but overall it's about curiosity and a sense of adventure which are pretty indicative of the way that I live and the conversations I like to have.

I really like this movie but based on many Gaspar Noe interviews I've watched I assume it's pretty clear that his view is that dead is the end, and there is nothing after it. The conclusion to the movie is that Oscar was tripping balls with DMT. After he smokes DMT everything from that point is an allucination, including his death.

Super wacky idea but i been thinking of consciousness as some kind of higher dimensional object that moves into or threw a lower dimension. The start of that movement for me was my birth, at least from my point of view. Im assuming what you and i will see as my end will just be the end of that interaction with the lower dimension. Sort of like the apple and the flatlanders. This higher object wears the lower state like a glove and build itself a suit to look out threw... you cant see the higher state from here but you can see its shadow.

I saw this movie on a severe amount of mushrooms (enough to make noe very proud lmao) and this movie was the most potent and transfixing thing I have ever experienced. That was my first foray into noes work (I’ve become a HARDCORE stan since then). Gaspar Noe has a brilliantly unique perspective on not only life but the film medium itself. Nobody is doing it like him.

It may be outside your realm of experience but I think you missed that Oscar begins the film specifically smoking DMT, and the psychedelic visuals he is seeing while tripping are the same kind of psychedelic visuals he sees while dying, drawing a correlation between the two. The film is about Oscar's Death Experience. Research into Near Death Experiences seems to indicate that, much like a psychedelic trip, Setting can be very influential on how the experience plays out. The 'Tibetan Book of the Dead' is a best attempt at explaining the Death Experiences with the information and understanding they had available then, so it's interesting that it's still relevant when trying to understand recountings of Near Death Experiences and what may occur during actual Death Experiences.
What will happen after we die? If our brains aren't violently pulverized we will likely have some kind of Death Experience.
Ultimately you came to the same conclusion (about the interpretation that this isn't Oscar straight up going through the Bardos and being reincarnated) that your Death Experience will be heavily influenced by who you were in life and what you surrounded yourself with.
My interpretation of the ending is that I hope at the end of his Death Experience Oscar was able to undergo a beautiful rebirth of understanding and to reconcile all his unresolved feelings about his life and loved ones so that he was ready for whatever awaits us after the Death Experience.

I've had dozens of OBE's (and once woke up a girlfriend by projecting images into her mind while she was asleep) and this movie bears literally zero resemblance to anything I would relate to OBEs or any of the hundreds of NDE accounts that I've read... But something about the vibe of the film perfectly reminded me of a very high-level Salvia trip that traumatized me for several years -- and as a result, it's pretty much the only movie I've ever been unable to finish watching. I've thought about giving it another try one of these days, but I cheated by peaking at a wikipedia synopsis to save myself the trouble.

There's this story called The Egg by Andy Weir (Yep, the guy who wrote The Martian.). It's kind of a thought experiment. What if reincarnation was real? And what if it didn't happen in a chronologically linear timeline? What if it was possible to reincarnate and MEET YOURSELF living different lifetimes.
What if every person who has ever lived was actually YOU?
I think about it a lot. While I don't think everyone is the same soul living different life times, I also think we get more than one go on this mortal coil, and I think time is an illusion to those outside of it.

On the movie title alone, I wondered if this was going to have something to do with a game called The Void. Which I think was also about a character in their last moments of consciousness before slipping away. I don't remember that much about it besides it feeling like a fever dream. Like this movie.
Since this is based on all views, guess the shedding of the ego and tearing the soul apart is similar to biocentricism?
