The other problem is that people have this crazy idea that they can make a living wage off of becoming a content creator on social media when they need to get off their rear ends and get real jobs.

If you believe in free markets and neoliberalism, I paid for my laptop, so why should a mega corp get to decide what I am allowed to do with it? This is the issue with business today, they want to sell you a shitty experience with strings attached, no thanks. I use brave or Firefox on all my hardware and for my work laptop where I am forced to use chrome, I use ublock and sponsorblock

youtube doesn't have a monopoly. you can watch videos all over the internet. what youtube has is lots of money to spend because they are backed by google. how would competators like rumble compete with that? well, they'll ask you to watch ads or pay for the services, just like youtube is doing now.

One other aspect is security, because malvertising is a thing. For me, blocking ads is a standard and fundamental part of cyber hygiene. Also, my bandwidth is limited and I pay for it. I like to have as much control as possible over how that bandwidth is used. And I too have no problem with UA-cam's stance. If it blocks access unless I pay then I will seriously consider paying. And will probably decide not to and go elsewhere...

@@btkb1427 while there are certainly monopolistic elements to Google/UA-cam’s ad business (which should be dealt with!), such a move by UA-cam could be the “kick in the pants” needed to force some serious competition in the marketplace. It might very well be the beginning of the end for UA-cam if they decide to do something so drastic. Or it may change nothing. To be determined..

My main problem with adblockers is how it FORCES you to watch them, interrupting whatever you are doing. Especially on youtube, they try to alleviate it with skippable ads (even though I've noticed less and less ads are skippable), but thats still interrupts whatever I'm watching. If the ads appeared either at the very end or at the top of the comments section where in neither cases it would bother me, I would have no problem with them.

  • @thomasandolf7365

the problem is when companies stop focusing on building a good service, and just build "something" so that they can serve ads. 30 years ago you built a productc and if it was good, people would pay for it. Today you dont care if the product is good or not. All they want is to serve ads, and. For instance snapchat was born because of people sending nudes and explicit pictures and the opposite party would not be able to store them. That was the entire idea, now snap chat is a hot mess with ads every 20 seconds. Its impossible to do anything without seeing an ad.
You tube was fine when you maybe had some adds before sure. But now i watch a 10 minut clip and i get 4 minutes of ads.
They have become too greedy, and overexposed users to ads to maximize profit, and buy their competitors.. So its basically their own fault.

2:55 Okay, but allow me to retort: they're tracking the hell out of me so they can tell that I've purchsed from their advertisers and don't need to see the ads. Especially the same g/d ad over and over again, or ads disrupting a song.

This, because interrupting Led Zeppelin is definitely going to build customer engagement between the advertiser and the viewer, right? Does grabbing someone by the neck and squeezing constitute engagement?

  • @aresye

I honestly cannot remember any time in the past decade or so, where I actually bought a product I saw in an ad. I generally do not enjoy being patronized to, so the very act of seeing an ad for a product makes me less likely to buy that product. I know I'm not alone either, so the fact that ads are profitable in the first place just dumbfounds me.
Secondly, most ads nowadays are completely immoral. They promote hedonism, gluttony, sexual degeneracy, and a myriad of other things that, if emulated by those in society, generally leads to a dysfunctional society. I know not everyone will agree with that take, but I feel when I'm already paying half a Benjamin Franklin to fill up my car, I shouldn't have to see or hear some half-naked woman blabbing on about what useless thing is trending.
And that brings me to my last point. It's EVERYWHERE. Billboards, magazines, newspapers, TVs, computers, stores, freaking fuel pumps (see above), intercoms, radio stations, the logos on people's clothes, etc. Ad-space has become this amorphous void that engulfs anything and everything. Worst of all is, nobody seems to care. Either that, or their attention spans are so shot by the endless assault of stimulation they don't even notice. It should be a basic right on the part of human dignity, to not be treated as a product and commodity for the monetary gain of others.

W take. Completely agree that both users and YT are justified in the ad-blockers and ad-blocker-blockers. I don't think YT is justified in how pervasive the ads are, however. I don't mind banner/side ads as long as they don't interrupt content, don't show raunchy content, or are super obnoxious. Also, you touched on this, but lots of people are switching browsers purely because of this, including myself. I used to use both Chrome and Firefox but have switched to exclusively Firefox. Now Google is missing out on not only ad-views from me but also all the additional traffic from my browser!

One easy way to solve this is charge uploaders $1 per video they upload, and an extra 50 cents for every 30 minutes longer the video is. That would prevent the spam of low quality garbage and wouldn't affect the UA-camrs living off their channel on UA-cam. Even if they made a video every day that is only $30 a month. That isn't that much. Just paying rent is over $1,000 a month for the vast majority.

The other thing that drives me mad with this, is that depending what you want out of premium, it's not even necessarily good value, because there's only a single tier/price. It offers 4 key things: Ad-free, offline downloads, background play, and YT music. I could not care less about all of the latter 3. I watch exclusively on desktop, so background/downloads don't matter as those are app features, and I don't care about YT music at all (and let's not pretend that the licensing arrangements for that aren't a decent portion of the price).
If I could get just the ad-free for a lower price, depending on what they priced it at, I'd honestly consider it, which is especially more annoying, as they already trialled a Premium Lite in some places, then canned it.

This is pretty much exactly how I've felt about it. I use a couple others like daily motion, but youtube just seems to have the interface and the quantity and I hope this drives the competition to grab more of the audience somehow, while at the same time driving people to create better addblockers. I use a lot of open source, the ones I rely on or believe in I contribute to.

With UA-cam recently attacking video streaming performance when ad-blocking is detected, it’s usually faster to download a video at source quality with yt-dlp and then watch it than it is to stream at auto and get buffering on 480p.
I don’t have a problem with ads in UA-cam, I have a problem with UA-cam being greedier and doucheyer with their ads every year. The noticeable increase in watch time being ads over the past 15 years is why I do what I do.

usually my beef is more with how ads are done, and how pricing is done, than with the ads themselves. i used to watch Dota tournaments on twitch and sometimes during a crucial moment, or while someone is saying something i want to hear, i'd get a 30 second ad that would ruin it. if the ads were non-invasive eg didn't interrupt streams/videos and were instead on the side of the page or video, i'd be far less annoyed by them.
same with premium, if it cost like $1 a month i'd go for it.
train tickets here in the UK are so preposterously expensive for how bad the service is, so most of us try to skip fares where possible. if they were half as much, we'd pay no problem because it's reasonable to pay for a useful service. but the companies that own the trains (mostly owned by the German state, interestingly) basically have monopolies on routes and times, so they charge bullshit amounts

I'm a capitalist too, but I think free-market is the worst economic system for three main reasons:
    - As you said, a free-market capitalis wants to make A LOT of profit, in order to do that, the best source for working force is underdeveloped countries, which generates wage slavery
    - By opening the economy to foreign companies, you destroy local businesses, generating unemployment
    - There is no such "competition", being that large companies have the resources to take their production abroad, while others not.
Taking that as a base, that's why you need a STRONG government, an institution is needed that balances the correlation of forces. But to avoid corruption and lobby, people should get more involved in politics.

My issue is when they force ads on products you buy. Like TV'S, game consoles, streaming consoles. Etc... You paid for the product to do one thing which wasn't to have ads thrown in your face. Samsung is well known for this and now Amzon fire sticks and Nvidia shields. More and more and there isn't even an option to disable the ads. This is where I think laws need to change to not make paid products a delivery system for ads and that if done must require to disable the feature. Cause I'm ready to send these companies a bandwidth bill.

You seem to be on point as far as my own views are concerned. It makes sense that UA-cam wants to lower the number of people blocking ads, just as it makes sense that people don't want to see ads and develop better ad-blockers. I haven't thought of this from the perspective of free markets but it could indeed help with improving the quality of software and maybe moving people away from UA-cam to other platforms (... are there other platforms?)
One thing that surprises me too is how aggressive UA-cam is with this ad-blocker-blocking rhetoric. When you look at the installs there are "only" 100 million of installs of AdBlock and uBlock Origin on Chrome (who knows how many are multiple installs, and I don't know if it counts only active users or the historic number of installs), so let's assume there are about 150 million people blocking ads in total, which is not even 10% of YT's (unique) monthly userbase. But what this approach did was also increase people's awareness of adblockers and the number of people who've installed one for the first time, as well as you mentioned canceling their YT Premium subscription or moving to other platforms. I can't imagine UA-cam benefitting from this so far and I imagine this will only get worse for them moving forward.
As for the "world without ads", I've felt for a while that game prices are totally messed up. There're so many people expecting great games to cost 5-10$ on Steam these days, and the entire market moving towards cloud gaming, permanently-online, f2p games (+ microtransactions/ads) and ultimately cheap games that everything is saturated towards high quantity + low quality. Indie games / solo devs are often compelled to set very low prices for games because there's so much good stuff at low prices already, etc. I would love to see how things would look if we went back to games being a more premium product but I imagine the quality would go up and even big corps would have to step up their game.

Your point about paying for specific products being reasonable is correct, but people tend to flock to the cheapest immediate option, so free with ads will always outpace a paid product with no strings attached.
Theres jewelry subscription services now… food subscriptions, subscriptions to access additional/more paid for content.
Using various products as an example: YT would not be able to add that extra profit to their creators if they were a pay up front forever deal, with no ads.
Every streaming service wouldn’t exist long because people would buy, watch, delete, then those services would never make money beyond an initial purchase which means they now have to constantly acquire new customers. Being subscription based has an added benefit of being able to be catered to the subscribers, and target audience instead of “everyone” which is what most things you pay upfront are marketed for.
People subscribe to OF because they get the content specific, from the person, content, and interactivity levels. If that site was a pay up front for generic content, it would just be another website

It is said that creators make more when ads are allowed. I'm curious if that's true or a lie perpetrated by UA-cam. I think it's a lie.
UA-cam gets paid by advertisers to have their ads play, regardless if the ads are watched or not. It's similar to seeing a commercial during a TV program. The advertiser pays the TV network, whether people watch it or not. This shouldn't have any effect on the creators paycheck one way or another.

UA-cam, the users, the viewers, because of advertisement. The Adblock issue, it had to end some where. Band UA-cam one to three month or year to see what is what the issue come out to be. What is more important today is life to live on. You can have and don't have.

Honestly, UA-cam's attitude toward its users, which tends to range from flippant at best to downright malicious at worst, certainly doesn't help things. They're an outfit that will casually demonetize a content creator for an absolute sleight, or even for nothing at all. They allow abusive and outright illegal abuse of DMCAs against their content creators, and put content creators in a guilty-until-proven-innocent situation where they are expected to effectively dox themselves if they want to fight it. They make decisions their community is outright against like removing downvotes. And, relatedly, they honestly do not care, even a little, if the ads they are serving are inappropriate or even outright dangerous. Hell, just the fact that they escalated to threatening legal action for ad blockers in under a month of people resisting it, without even considering alternatives, is very telling just how little they actually think of their users. It's no small wonder users are so willing to put a middle finger towards the pro-ad arguments like "it pays for the site", and it's something people really need to think about before they make the "it is immoral to block ads" argument. And I get that they're a company trying to make a profit, not our friends or family, and that our relationship with them is strictly professional, but even that kind of relationship needs to be give and take.

Adds that are just banners and static images are fine....but as soon as they flash its a nono as they are distracting you from experience. Old internet banner adds are fine. Most people started using addblockers when then got anoying back in 2006.
Also...this days addblocker of any kind is a must security as malvare is hidden in adds as people who buy adds can easy change the site that leads to malvare crap (or even worse things).

I'm absolutely 100% in favor of ad blockers for the same reasons you gave. I'm less in favor of ad's than you however lol. I simply despise ads and everything they represent for the same reasons as you, just much more strongly. Ads are cancer for the soul, for the brain, for critical thinking.

The world needs to move past an ad based system for driving things. If a movie studio, or a tv show, cannot be made without forcing people to watch ads, often for products they will never buy or want, then that studio or network doesn't need to exist. If your business model cannot exist on users purchasing content, renting content, streaming content but has to heavily rely on ads, you have failed as a business. While yes ads are giving you money, its costing you a fortune of good will and public perception. I cord cut over 13 years ago. I refuse to sit thru commercials for products I'm never, in my life, going to need to buy. I enjoy my content ad free these days, in one means or another.

when I want to buy something I do a search for it. Until then I don't need ads shoved in my face for something I googled 2 months ago. Faulty logic that getting "eyes on ads" results in sales/revenue. How about this for every ad I watch I get a $1, paid by the company making the ad. I'm sure the number of useless ads drop very quickly. PS drop the premium price to under $5 a month and almost no-one will bother with ad blockers.

"the games are just good enough to capture your attention long enough to serve ads" that's literally all a game is supposed to be. if it's good enough to grab your attention, even for a moment, then it has served its purpose as a game. if it also serves the game maker's purpose of delivering ads, that's an acceptable trade. if the game is good enough to grab your attention for longer than a moment, then you'll be entertained for a longer period of time, and you'll be willing to trade more of your time watching ads. that's the deal and we're all ok with it. so i'm not sure why you say this with the implication that it's somehow wrong.

    • @ObakuZenCenter
      @ObakuZenCenter 9 місяців тому +1

No, 'we' are not okay with this at all. Games are not supposed to be vehicles for serving ads. That's just not how games work. In fact games that have tried this approach have universally failed.

  • @virtualinfinity6280
    @virtualinfinity6280 9 місяців тому

Good rundown, nevertheless, I mainly disagree. The culprit is the "free market". There isn't any. If I am - as you correctly state - the product, I should be able to charge a price for the product. Remember what you said about market? Yet, I am being declined to access myself as a product to a "free market". Instead, I am being stolen from. So far, I am fine with that, as this is a "ok deal" for me - I get free youtube and whatnot, whilst the companies doing that stuff monetize the flying f*ck out of my personal data obtained for free. And it works. All the companies you stated - Google, Instagram, Meta, X, younameit got insanely rich by doing what they do. But if I am to pay money on top of the deal, I want my fair share in the profits, as I am the one delivering wealth to them (or better - all of us, you get the picture).
And it is a fundamental misconception to assume, a world without ads would be in any way "cheaper" or "better". It may be news to some, but all that money spend on advertisement comes out of the pockets of consumers. That again, is me and you.
