- Hitting up on the driver can give you added distance and an improved flight, but there are right and wrong ways of doing this. Chris Ryan explains how to achieve this correctly in this video.

ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON. Chris, this is by far the best explanation I have seen on you tube, how to hit up on the ball like a pro golfer. well done mate.
Great tip. I’ve been trying to improve on this for a long time. This seems to be an easier way to work on it.
THANK YOU!!! I COULD NEVER HIT IT PAST 210-220 YARDS DUE TO MY NEGATIVE AOA AND MY LOW LINE DRIVERS!!!! i WAS TRYING TO HIT UP THE WRONG WAY.. THIS IS THE FIRST VIDEO THAT ADDRESS IT PROPERLY AFTERS MONTHS OF STRUGGLING WITH MY DRIVER AND GETTING HELP FROM OTHERS/LESSONS! NOW ITS 240++ EASY
This is why getting proper lessons is so important. Ryan explained this perfectly, so glad you have it figured out now :)
Thanks Ryan, got lazy over the winter. 2 range buckets later and I've gotten my driving yardage back. Subscribed 👍🏼
Found your old video, good stuff, will try this. Ty Chris!
Great swing Chris!
That explains it really clearly Chris. Thanks.
Good video, what you describe here really resembles what a pro swing on tv looks like, but what exactly are the wrists doing here, if the hands are moving upwards to make the clubhead move up have the wrists unhinged before that happens or is it part of that move also, the more i learn about golf the more the damn rabbit-hole deepens
Great vid, thank you.
nice vid thanks chris.
will you show a freeze frame of point of impact please I see lag and release but can't see position of hands and body at impact most grateful if you could
how do you hit up on it while trying to square the clubface. I always leave the face open. would the feeling be to try and add topspin to it like a tennis or ping pong shot?
Thanks Chris! I didnt know how to hit...
Thanks for the comment, glad you found the video helpful.
How much would it cost to come have a lesson with u Chris Ryan
I'm very excited to try this out. Currently, I'm maxed out at 250 yards. If I can only add another 20 yards, I'll be really happy.
Chris, really informative video. Along with shallowing my swing this is something that I have been working on. However, I feel it would be easier to see what you were demonstrating from a down-the-line view demonstration. Having watched your video and a handful of others to try and improve my swing I feel that I have finally come to understand the necessary tweaks in order to make the correct adjustments and develop my swing to properly hit up on the ball with my driver. None the less, watching your demonstration in the face-on view doesn't seem to clearly show how you are "exaggerating" your swing path in order to show how your swinging Inside-out and upward.
This is just a suggestion, and maybe you can do a follow up video. Otherwise, I love everything else that you have created.

Since I started to hit it up on the ball I gain 50 yards more. Moving the ball forward and switching from white to pink tees. If I would hit it flat or down I would roll it on fairway like with the putter :)
I discovered if you a wide stance.. it automatically lets you launch it high. My feet used to be shoulder width with driver. This is not enough. Really need to exaggerate towards wider than shoulders. I launch every drive high without trying. It creates low point behind ball and keeps your head back as well as spine tilted back.. but automatically.
Chris can you please explain how to hit a fade with a driver with high spin and low launch angle
Hi Chris Is the weight total on the left leg at Impact just like the iron ?In fact it is same as iron except for the more aux tilt and the ball is more to the left after the low point All other features like ground force on left leg , longer club length after release from horizontal etc are still in play tks
+teoh lean gek Hi, at impact you should generally have about 80% or your weight/pressure through your lead leg with both irons shots and drivers.
squirrel in the background :)
JoeyC lots of grass😂
Person talking 🤪
Good vid, I struggle to do this properly, my issue is when I try this I fall back and keep my weight on my back foot. With an iron I stack my left side and its fairly easy to get through the ball, with hitting up on the driver, keeping head back, how do u stack the left side and get through the shot properly?
Hi Ted Brock, i would try and approach the swing the same with driver and iron, although maybe set a little more upper body tilt away from the target with the driver, couple that with the ball more up in your stance and you should be able to create the same move as with the iron and generate an upward attack angle.
I just recently have taken up the game, this is my first real season out and I have gotten myself a new driver and fairway wood a few weeks ago. Well I seem to be hitting the ball very high on the face, to the point of a tiny bit of paint chip on the driver above the face... no sky marks... yet. I feel like this started happening as I started hitting my irons higher on the face. is it possible I am not hitting up on it and maybe trying to hit it more like my hybrids? Thanks!
I make plenty contact with the turf if that also helps any. I feel like I shouldn't be hitting the turf as much as I do with my driver.
Never look at it this way. Will give it a go at the range. Thanks.
Thanks asyouaskforit Hope it works for you.
Rory hits up with his driver, he is one of the longest. He tees it up high as well.
Thank you, nice video... I push the driver and most woods to the right...Dead Right Push Straight 20 - 30 yards to the right of target - Do you have any videos to correct my push...Thanks again I appreciate your help.
hi GolfNaples Im afraid i havent done any videos on stoipping a push, but will add it to my list
ChrisRyanGolf Thanks looking forward to it, great instruction!
good stuff ...made a GIF and I'll share it with your viewers

Yes I think this was my problem
Hi Chris, curious, were you in Cancun Mexico for a wedding in January 2015? Coco Bongo? If so, we met there, I'm from Canada. You put my name on your cell phone. we talked golf, skiing etc. Gimmie a shout. Randy.
hi Randy N, i wasnt im afraid, but wish i was. A good friend of mine who is a golf professional and does quite a lot of instruction on You Tube was however, perhaps it was him.
Will teeing up a ball promote a draw shot instead of a slice?
I must say that I find this discussion somewhat inadequate. First off, the secret to hitting up on the ball is body crunching which is produced by tilting the torso towards the off target foot at set up and enhanced by a lateral pelvic thrust toward the target.
Key to a successful golf swing is the role of the right and left arm-wrist-shoulder triad. The left arm, or target side arm, must be kept straight from set-up through impact. The right must be kept bent until after the ball has been impacted. The shoulders, arms, forearms, wrists and hands rotate together.
The job of the left side triad is to describe the swing arc; while, the task of the right side is to provide power and support of the club. Critical to a successful golf swing is timing the initiation of the right side: that must occur shortly before striking the golf ball. Succinctly put, the off target, or right shoulder triad is relatively passive until just before striking the ball. All that's really happening is that the right wrist is keeping itself cocked in what we Yanks call the Hogan Wrist, or "waiter with tray position".
As impact approaches, the left shoulder triad maintains control, but as the hands reach the off target thigh, right thigh for right handed golfers, the right hand, wrist, forearm, arm, shoulder push the golf club through impact. Critical to a successful, ball crunching, screaming, line drive smash up at impact is the sensation that the off target, right, triceps muscle is in contact with the outside of the right pectoral muscle.
That's how you change a spherical golf ball into semi-sphere while it is on the tee. Bottom line: it is a must to talk shoulders, arms, wrists, and hands when describing the golf swing. Anything less will lead to misunderstandings.
Hi Chester, thanks for commenting and really appreciate your interaction. Although I do have to say that if I quoted what you just have to my clients I'd have a pretty quiet lesson diary and some pretty confused golfers! Appreciate your comments though.
Hogan said he wanted two right arms, and you will get a lot more distance if you introduce the right shoulder, arm, & hand push. When this push is executed properly, it will flatten the arc of the swing defined by the left shoulder, arm, wrist triad. By flatten, I mean elongate the travel of the hands toward the target. Instead of just a microsecond of back of left hand at target and palm of right hand at target, you get a bit longer before re-establishing the arc.
+Roenie hi and thanks for commenting. We are now able to better understand what is happening in a good golf swing as we can measure so much more. It is proven that the golfer should be applying a force on the golf club in towards them as they strake the ball. (Almost trying to pull the club upwards) this move has to be done with both hands. Hard to explain via text but hope that helps.
Too much info......not appropriate to lessons.
Most guys trying to have hands ahead at impact w driver with hit big push slice
hands in front of the clubhead is going to deloft clubhead.
He was exaggerating the movement to better show us viewers

5:08-5:23 ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Why do rounds last 6 hours?
your playing entirely too slow. fantastic video Chris, hats off from the states!
I don't believe his tutorial swing resulted in a drive that landed in the fairway because a) his spine was not tilted back enough, and b) his hands released before they were opposite the middle of his forward (left) thigh. A good drill for Chris would be the broom drill. Additionally, he should make a practice swing before where he concentrates on seeing the handle of the golf club parallel to the ground as it passes his belt buckle. Hi Chester, thanks for the comments. Impressive if you can determine a balls direction from the face on view! My trackman numbers show that I actually hit 'too' much up with the driver and too much to the right. More side bend would make the attack more up, whilst a later release would see the path more right. I hit my best drives with earlier release and less side bend. More importantly though the videos are instructional and informative, I will not always be able to demonstrate my points perfectly, I wish I could! Hope you find my value in some of my other videos.
