  • Crossing borders on a sailboat is the same as travelling anywhere abroad. Except that with a boat, you need to times the bureaucracy by 10 in some countries… We've done it in seven minutes and three days. We know people who have been arrested on arrival, and there are some places where you just cannot take your dog...or your firearm.

    That was great people live there lives so fast they do not understand, respect it will take as long as it takes. Plus if you turn up dressed right even if your melting in will hopefully go quickly and smoothly. Plus I hate flip flops tried as a kid just kept tripping up. Thank you for your wisdom.

    Glad you are better, Liz! A quick hour and eleven minutes -- amazing given the intricacy of the material.
    My funny customs story: after four or five years in the U.S. -- having grown up as a child in Barcelona (mostly) -- an airport porter recognized me and pushed the trolley to the front of the line, vouched for me, got my bags chalked and on our way. "Welcome home," I thought to myself.
    Thanks for a great presentation!

    A point to note: The issue of a 30-day tourist visa, permits a stay of 30-days (and 29 nights only). Ie: Not 30 nights. Thank you for the time taken to make this very informative episode.

      Indeed, the Visa on Arrival (VOA) can only be extended once. We arrived in Indonesia in May 2022 on B211a visas, as VOA weren't allowed. This changed mid voyage, which was just as well as my wife's B211a visa application had been rejected (scanned copy of passport unsuitable). After clearing in we returned to Australia and when we returned we had the choice of B211a or VOA. The first option was expensive (my extension and my wife's initial issue i.e. AUD750) or VOA for $100. We opted for the latter option but then needed to plan our voyage to exit Indonesia within the 60 days and also ensure we were at a suitable location for the extension. As the extension processing can take 5 business days, it was necessary to arrive at the appropriate location (Belitung) at the end of week 3. Something for other cruisers to consider. Whilst there are quite a lot of clear in/out ports in Indonesia they are well spread out.

    I am surprised to discover that an AIS transmitter, on a yacht, is required in some places. I thought, by international law, it was not required unless > 300 GT or a passenger vessel. I didn't think a yacht (pleasure vessel) was considered a passenger vessel, and I doubt Esper is quite that big.
    Also, despite what you may see on TV, not all of us Americans are walking around with 6 shooters on our hips. :) I don't own a gun. They are expensive and dangerous, even in the hands of somebody with training, and so few have proper training.

    • @followtheboat
      @followtheboat  9 місяців тому

      Agreed. On a previous episode on arms, we had trained army personnel telling us carrying weapons on a private sail boat is dangerous, not to mention futile in the event of an attack.

    Outstanding. Very informative and the personal stories helped to explain. The romantic idea of free sailing is a thing of the past and sad but as you said, be organized, friendly, respectful and get it done with a relaxed attitude. You can actually make friends in the process, even with the most officious types. I consider it a challenge.

  • @captainsalty56

    A few comments for clarity.
    You covered narcotics, prescription medicine etc. The other consideration is the 1st aid kit which might have several restricted medicines. Most Asia countries are very focused on this aspect and we have had the contents photographed including expiry dates (illegal to carry out of date drugs???). You also mentioned recreational drugs. The penalties can be severe and as one official informed us "The penalty for illegal drugs is death, followed by more severe punishments".
    Like yourselves we don't carry firearms, but know of fellow yachties that do. Several countries require the surrender of the firearms for safe keeping on arrival. The firearms are then returned on departure, which of course requires the vessel to depart from the same port it arrived at, which is not very practical for a long string of islands such as Indonesia.
    Indonesia requires domestic registered vessels to check in/out with harbour master at each port. Many harbour master incorrectly extend this to all vessels. We overcome this by avoiding entering ports in Indonesia if we can. Recently we berthed in Banyuwangi (a domestic port) and were obliged to pay the harbour master a courtesy visit who kindly endorsed our port clearance (Benoa to Nongsa Point) as having entered and exited Banyuwangi.
    RE: photocopies. We simply have a cheap scanner/printer onboard as we can't keep up with the number of copies folk require.
    Ship stamp - a must and we find a BIG RED one impresses the locals.
    CREW or PASSENGER LIST - need to ensure your documents align with local requirements. Some countries treat crew as professional mariners, others treat passengers as a charter operation.
    Flag etiquettes. As you mention lots of varying advice, but courtesy flag should be in good condition and flown at the top of the hoist on the starboard spreader. Some will suggest the flag needs to be bigger than your national flag, but this is not correct. Only the courtesy & Q flags should be flown on this hoist. Gin pennants, boxing kangaroos, club burgees on the port hoist. National Ensign should be flown at the appropriate place. In order of preference:
    Gaff
    Flagstaff at the stern
    Bow staff
    Starboard Yardarm
    Masthead
    Port Yardarm

    • @followtheboat
      @followtheboat  10 місяців тому

      Yes, I kind of included first aid under medical, but your point is correct.
      Yes, I think we made that point about firearms, but you may have missed it? Surely it's a given you'd have to go back to the place that has them to be able to collect them... 😄
      It hasn't been our experience that any harbour masters are interested in us. If they were, we'd hand them our phone and get our agent to talk to them.
      Your point on flag etiquettes emphasises the different information out there... 😄 As we said, don't sweat it, just make sure your Q and Courtesy flags are hoisted.
      Cheers! Liz

    While I've got you here - Check in/out is a pita when their not all in the same office. You'd think in this day they'd simplify it, i.e. electronically, finalise check-in when the guys board, inspect. Certify marina management/staff for it, generally available 7 days, better with English.
    Passport, all docs, should be electronic now, with quirky code to official issuing website for verification. Can log into accounts on their PC if stolen, or boat sinks.
    Never heard of a fine for courtesy flag, but nothing would surprise me with East Med. Sure they were officials? Sailing Zatara had issues in Egypt waters recently.
    Apparently Thailand requires insurance incl salvage recovery now, after so many tourist boats have been abandoned, sunk. Which hopefully results in less people uninsured when they drag into our boats with inefficient anchoring.
    Beware the sniffer dog finding your secret stash of cash that's been handled by drug users.
    What's the benefit of discord, or any other, vs just using this. To time consuming keeping up with all these different apps. I sound like a whining Pom 😜

    • @followtheboat

      I think these institutions are trying to get online but any government-funded process is always behind the times. I imagine the investment costs are significant in some of these countries. Indonesia has become a lot easier, while Phuket built a whole complex to house all offices. These are exceptions, of course. Discord allows us to have more in-depth discussions, as well as post up pictures, links etc, and we have topic-specific channels. From our point of view it's a whole lot easier to manage!

    • @followtheboat
      @followtheboat  10 місяців тому

      I watched the Zatara video and was shocked how different their experience was to ours.
      He's wrong when he says you don't check your boat in and out from port to port in other countries. As we say in our vid, this is common practise and we've experienced it in Malaysia, Thailand and India.
      I also don't agree with him that you should film officials, especially the military. This is likely to get you in serious hot water. And putting it on your YT channel is asking for trouble.
      We know lots of boats (without YT channels) who've gone through the Red Sea to the Med from this side of the world who haven't experienced any problems... Liz

    • @Lana_Warwick

      @@followtheboat That vlog was kind of a build up to hot head. Previous few vids showed bits & pieces of issues here & there, incl similar to your mention of being one meter over the invisible line (AIS), between adjoining countries with different religious beliefs.
      I was more pointing out how those guys on the boat didn't appear to be officials, just locals trying to scam tourists.
      I'd definitely record them, they just wouldn't be aware. But yes, putting it on YT doesn't help others sailing in behind them.

      This video is about checking OUT with a boat. You have to "bother with all that" otherwise you'll not be allowed to check IN anywhere else. Or do what you suggest, have your boat confiscated, be repatriated and banned from returning. We all make choices. Liz
