thank you so much very informative and detailed! one question, do all varieties of date palms need a pollinator? or is there one that is self-pollinating without male? bec. i intend to plant only 1 or 2 trees in my limited space. thanks !
with most varieties, most of the unpollinated fruit will fall off. With some varieties it will make a small low quality fruit that does not have a seed. There are a very few, like Abada, Dayri and Barhi that will hold some of the unpollinated fruit and be good to eat, although not as tasty as pollinated. fruit. Again, with most varieties, it just falls off or is not good to eat.

Hey great video. very informative.I am from Trinidad and Tobago and I will like to know how can I get date plants and how long they take before you get fruits from them ..
the palms will grow there but the fruit needs more heat to ripen (typically 100 days over 100f) and if it rains while the fruit is turning ripe it will mold, ferment, and rot before you can pick it. It takes 5 years to get even a little fruit from a palm started from a large offshoot, 12 years to full maturity.
We cut the flowers from the male palm just as they start to open, the same day they open. We cut the whole flower stalk. then we remove the casing. We keep the flower stalk (with the flowers) in a warm dry place. Each day we shake the pollen out of the flowers. I do this in a large plastic trashcan. Usually there will be pieces of the flowers that fall in with the pollen so we put it through a screen. Then it scoops or pours into the sprayer easily. There is nothing mixed into the pollen, no water, so it is really not sprayed, it is more like dust.
Fantastic. I live in Minnesota, love to eat big medjool dates (ca) and been thinking about where my food comes from/who makes it. I have never seen this and was looking to see what thee plant look like. Do you have any other videos of tree/grass with Dates grown. Informative. I don't think I could grow mine I think we're zone 3-4. Ha ha. I could bring it in the winter.
Hi there! My friend brought me several seeds of dates palm from Israel and out of those several seeds, I successfully germinated only one and it's growing fine after a year. Now, my question is, will it bear fruit?
+WENG4898 First, half of seeds planted will be male and so will not bear fruit. If it is female, you may have to wait 10 year before it has flowers but it could have fruit. Every seed planed, if it is a female, will be a different variety, not like the fruit it came from. But it should be a beautiful palm.
I was wondering does every variety have separate male. Meaning deglet male / medjool male etc or do datepalms have male varieties that are exclusively used for quality pollen. Appreciate it thanks
No, every male is unique. Perhaps it is easiest to explain that when you plant seeds half will become males and half will become females. If I plant a Medjool seed only half of the genetics are Medjool, the other half a separate male. So every male and every female is always a different variety from 2 parents. When selecting males for pollen, we have sort of a check list of things we look for. First it must be efficacious, meaning it must be able to actually pollinate a female flower. It must work at pollinating. Next we want males that are very early to open and give pollen, so that there is pollen at the beginning of the season in time for the first female to open. Then we also look for males that make lots of pollen. The last thing is hard to identify, and takes a lot of patients to work out, and that is we look for male pollen that makes large dates. There was an ag. scientist many years ago that did a lot of research on this and he identified males that meet all these factors. So we do use selected, good quality males.
Would different varieties of dates still pollinate or they must be same variety? I have grown different varieties from seeds but the trees which are about 5' tall now look the same.
If I understand your question right, the answer is that you do not get the same variety from a seed. To get the same variety you must cut the little palms that grow off the side of the parent, called offshoots. All seeds are the result of the parent female which had the fruit and the seed inside, and a separate palm, a male. Because the seed is always a cross you will always get something different than the female parent. So then, in a way, you could say different varieties do pollinate but it is a male variety and a female variety, You can not "cross" two females.
Is it possible to grow date palms in a greenhouse in a northern climate? I live in Michigan and have a heated greenhouse. Also where is a good place to buy a palm? Do you sell them? And can you recommend a good book?
allen cox Allen, there are a lot of good answers to your questions over on forums.gardenweb.com/forums/ in the palm section. That is more of a blog forum. The short answer, yes date palm will grow, they can take short frost, but not for days on end. They need 100 day over 100 degrees to produce fruit.
you can remove the flower case (cover) any time. the little bag we keep on until it either comes off on its own or we take it off when it is time to tie the bunches.
until the bunch gets so big it tears them off. or if they are still on at tie-down time we take it off then. String comes off at tie-down time too. Rain can effect pollination but more the cold temps. Rain can wash all the pollen off so the bag helps keep it there, but in cold weather the flowers may not receive the pollen. All you can do is keep pollen there and hope it turns warm and dry.
From a male date palm. We grow one male for every 50 female palms and that gives us enough pollen for all of them. If you need pollen next season, you can contact me at barhidates@gmail.com
How many weeks after pollination before it is obvious that dates are forming. I pollinated my first medjool flowers about 3 weeks ago and all I see is little balls, with many of them falling to the ground.
at 3 weeks that is all you will see, little balls smaller than a pea. Many flowers will not pollinate so it is normal for them to fall off. the flowers that do pollinate starts with 3 parts and only one part remains and becomes a date. The other 2 parts fall off. so there will be a lot of small bits that fall away. If all the flowers fall off, it usually means you were to late with the pollen or the pollen was not good. some years when the temperature is very cold that can effect pollination too. You should put pollen on Medjool within 14 days of the flower opening.
@@futtermanfarms6791Florida here- my medjool palm flowered in late February and I was unable to get male pollen until mid March- the sheaths already spread out with Little pea sized nodules( dates?) my question is should I even attempt to pollinate at this stage or wait until next year😔- first date tree I have no experience- grew from a seed from grocery store 5 years ago. @@janibaldonado9173 No, I would not bother Next year you can contact us and see if we have pollen early enough for you palm. Although this year we would not have. Our season is late this year. All depends on the weather. I would cut the entire fruit stalk off so that the palm does not put energy into trying to make fruit which will never be fit to eat. Let it put that strength into growing a stronger palm. Side note, you can also use Canary Island date palm pollen to pollinate your palm if that is available. By the way, you will not have a Medjool palm. Because your Medjool seed was, of course, pollinated by a male that is NOT a Medjool, your palm will be a new variety. You will get to name your own unique variety.
actually, you can. In fact, for Khalas variiety, you almost have to because you will not get good pollination unless you get pollen on the flowers early, before the casing opens. When we are working a lot of palms we open all the ones that are out enough to get a bag over the flowers. That way we can work all the flowers in 2 times climbing up. If you wait for the flowers to open you will have to climb up more times. We get very good 100% pollination from the flowers we open with the knife.
no, you can not notice or tell by looking at the seed if it will be male of female. Also you can not tell by looking at the new palm as it starts to grow. You must wait until it grows enough to have flowers. You can also do genetic testing on new palm but that is expensive.

this is not true. Every male is different and so is every female. Some female have strong, thick crowded thorns too. You can tell by genetic testing or by observing the flowers. No other way.
usually 10 to 12 years. sometimes as few as 8 if you plant in the ground, are in a VERY hot area, it gets full sun, and a lot of water. of course half will be male palms and only have pollen, no fruit. the half that are female will not be the same as the parent it came from .
Yes the date palm will grow there but rain on the dates when they are turning ripe will ruin them and many varieties will split in the rain even when green. So, the palm will grow but it is not likely that you will get good fruit.
you are correct that all the work was not done. I only took off enough thorns to make room to do this video. and by the way, I am from Coachella Valley where I have been growing dates since 1977.
We just climb the male and cut the whole flower stalk. the pollen falls off of the flowers and we sift it through a screen. Pollen has a lot of moisture when you first collect it so keep it dry and let it have air, or it can mold
Futterman Farms How do you know that the pollens are mature Sir? And how long we can keep the pollens for pollination? Do they have chances to get useless?
Any time pollen shakes out of the flowers it is ready. You can keep pollen for 2 months without any special care. Just keep in dry place. You can store it in a refrigerator for up to one year. Be sure it is dry before refrigerating so it does not cake or mold. One year old pollen is not as effective as fresh but you can just use a little more and you should get good results.
We put the bag on for several reasons. But first about the cover, or casing. It does not grow out as fast as the flower so you have to cut it to have it out of the way of the bag. It does not make any difference if you cut the case before it opens on its own, as long as there is pollen when the flowers are ready. We do not use bags on Medjool, and they pollinate just fine without the bag even when we cut the case open 2 weeks before it would open on its own. (as longs as there is pollen near it) The bag does several things. 1) it keeps the pollen in place so there is pollen when the flower is ready 2) it keeps the temperature inside the bag just a little warmer which is better for pollination (more of the flowers will pollinate) 3) By leaving the bag on until the bunch grows large enough and splits the bag, the dates actually grow faster. If the bag stays on for 6 weeks, the dates can be as much as 30% larger than the ones that do not have a bag on them. 4) It helps when applying the pollen on a windy day. When we work on windy days we put the pollen directly in the bag. 5) it does not really seem to make any difference with rain, though. Note: it is important to use paper, NOT plastic since plastic holds in moisture and can cause mold.
Ed, This is Arthur Futterman of Futterman Farms, the one who is in the video. Ron is the avid date lover who helped me make this video. I do sell dates. You can contact me through email barhidates@gmail.com
People often ask this question. The bees do go to the male palms and gather pollen from them, but they do not go to the female palms or flowers, so we help. In the wild, there would be LOTS of males but we only keep one male for every 50 females. Males do not produce fruit, so we do not want to spend land and cultivation resources to grow lots of males. Only enough to have the pollen we need.
I have Date tree but fruit is not come please some advice me for coming fruit please please. soil is good. domestic Date tree is provide more fruit dut soudi Dates is not
There may be many reasons. Does it have flowers? if it has flowers but no fruit, it may be a male. Do you have female with flowers but no fruit? you may need to put the pollen sooner. Khalas needs to have pollen very early. It is good to open the flowers before they open on their own and put pollen there very early. If it does not have flowers yet, it may just need to grow for a couple more years to get more strong.
I will try to do a video on this next season. The short answer is we cut the male flower as soon as the case opens and shake the pollen out. Its really that simple. To get a lot of pollen for a lot of females you may want to have a place for male flowers to dry and shake them 2 or 3 more times. Also make a screen to let pollen through but keep out flower pieces and other debris. Once you have the pollen it will have a lot of moisture and can mold, so be sure to keep it dry. I just keep it in an open container, not more than 1/4 inch deep for a few days. for long term storage, let pollen dry then keep in clean glass jar in refrigeration. Be careful when you take pollen back out of refrigeration that moisture from the air does not get it wet.
yes, a date palm is either male of female, different palms. Only the female has fruit. Only the male has pollen. It is easy to tell from the flowers if it is male or female. When you plant a seed, it may take several years before it makes its first flower. You can tell by genetic test in a lab, but yes, that is expensive. or you can wait several years, usually 7 or more years, before you see the first flower to tell that way.

How do i know male and female date tree from leaves??? Please reply
the flowers. The male flowers have pollen only, the female flowers make fruit only.
oud musician Thanks 🙂
this is not true. Every male is different and so is every female. Some female have strong, thick crowded thorns too. You can tell by genetic testing or by observing the flowers. No other way.
Futterman Farms Thanks can you please show clear pic of both flowers in next video 🙂
very very fine
How do you know if palm is male or female?
They have different kinds of flowers. male have pollen
Where to buy male polen sir ?
we can sell pollen when we have it. We will have pollen in February and March.
Nice
all my grandparents did that isnt big deal .... but good work ... :)
intelligent video
I plant from seed, how many years, will make fruit? Sir
usually 10 to 12 years. sometimes as few as 8 if you plant in the ground, are in a VERY hot area, it gets full sun, and a lot of water. of course half will be male palms and only have pollen, no fruit. the half that are female will not be the same as the parent it came from .
maria exelsie bontigao In Thailand , our date palm that planted from seeds can give fruit as early as only two years.
What did you spray sar
pollen
Does palm tree can grow here in Philippines?
Yes the date palm will grow there but rain on the dates when they are turning ripe will ruin them and many varieties will split in the rain even when green. So, the palm will grow but it is not likely that you will get good fruit.
That tree needs work done. Very drity work. Need to take a trip to south cali.. Coachella Valley California
you are correct that all the work was not done. I only took off enough thorns to make room to do this video. and by the way, I am from Coachella Valley where I have been growing dates since 1977.
NICE
How did you collected the pollens?
One year old pollen is not as effective as fresh but you can just use a little more and you should get good results.

you should not cut the cover , you can just let it open by it self when ready for pollination. then you don't have to cover it with the bag .
+jj aljj
I think the bag to protect it from rain!
+Spain King
he can just let it open by it self when ready for pollination .
(as longs as there is pollen near it)
The bag does several things.
1) it keeps the pollen in place so there is pollen when the flower is ready
2) it keeps the temperature inside the bag just a little warmer which is better for pollination (more of the flowers will pollinate)
3) By leaving the bag on until the bunch grows large enough and splits the bag, the dates actually grow faster.

Thank you it was a very useful very much
Thanks again for sharing this video .
Ron, do you sell dates ? How would I order ?
Ed, This is Arthur Futterman of Futterman Farms, the one who is in the video. Ron is the avid date lover who helped me make this video. I do sell dates. You can contact me through email barhidates@gmail.com

where are the bees when we realy need them.
Only enough to have the pollen we need.
you should see us we Arabs how we pollinate the date... very basic and easier methods

If it does not have flowers yet, it may just need to grow for a couple more years to get more strong.
how do you extract the pollen?
Be careful when you take pollen back out of refrigeration that moisture from the air does not get it wet.
thanks, really helpful info.
no male , its female
Is date male and female?
Yes. Tissue culture is the best way to find if it is a m/f. its expensive as well
KOPPAKZZZ I thinked when date is only a male or female
yes, a date palm is either male of female, different palms.
