What's even more disturbing is that evil people like this woman(Precious' Abusive mother) actually exists. I've watched this movie when I was 11 and I knew how dark this movie was.
Jon all the more disturbing when some people choose, repeatedly, to name the selfish choice. People filled with fear and presumption. All you have to do is look at The people currently in power in this country to see self worship and greed and hate.
Precious mom wasn't evil though. In real life no on is evil. Everyone is a victim. She herself was probably treated similar to precious. Statistically precious will be like her mother, in many ways. When you are raised a certain way, by people you trust, even after becoming an adult, you can realize how fucked up you are, but it doesn't just go away. People blame the devil, but I think humans are far worse.
The brilliance of this scene is that she can’t remember when her child was born but she remembers every small detail of the trauma she endured. That glimpse into her experience of the world is heartbreaking.
My heart broke for her, but where she made her mistake was blaming “Precious” for the actions of that sick man. She tried to argue that “Precious” didn’t scream or yell, but my response would’ve been, “You just told me that he was touching her as a baby, while y’all were having sex!!! Rhys Middleton point is the bitch didn’t even know her child’s birthday and I’m not calling Monique a bitch I’m talking about the character she was playing
Mer Kitten it does happen unfortunately. I personally saw this last year at my job. Her fiancee was abusing her girls. What did she do after he got arrested? She bailed him out of jail. I lost a little faith in humanity that day.
I just seen an interview with Monique talking about this movie. She said after they were done with the abuse scenes she would ask Precious if she was ok and they would hug and laugh.
It's crazy to me how people who are most famous for being funny and hysterical like comedians or people who played funny characters on TV (Eddie Murphy, Monique, Will Smith) , make the most phenomenal dramatic actors and can put on the most stellar, incredible performances. Monique was absolutely amazing in this scene.
Jasmine Simmons that's because some gifted comedians laugh through their trauma the reason their comic is genius and helps them keep their sanity to tell other's who might and will go crazy😱.....and when they relive the story they speak it as if it's happening vividly in the moment
Which is why it's silly when people say the academy is racist. When comedians are getting the awards, you have to stop blaming racism and just perform better.
When Precious said, “according to that test, I’m reading at a 7th and 8th grade level,” tears rolled down my face. Those words spoke hope into every single person who has ever been abused and discouraged. Brilliant moment!
It wasn't THAT good! This movie is overrated and OVER melodramatic and had a "hidden" agenda to snag awards due to a very depressing storyline. The old let's get sympathy and garner some awards from someone else's personal tragedy.
@@rickyparker3853 thats not the reason she got the award though. The reason she got the award is because she's a monster and an evil being that brought something else to the table. Fucked up as it is. She displays a humanity that her character doesnt deserve. The only other person that did that was Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs
I didn’t realize until recently that her mother was sexually abusing her too. There’s a scene earlier in the movie where she’s under the blankets doing things alone, and then tells precious to “come take care of mommy”, so her saying “who was gonna love me, who was gonna touch me and make me feel good” was about who else was going to do it besides precious. Her man left, so all she had was her daughter so she abused her as well. "So when she tells you about those things I did to her" I always thought they were physical abuse because she was mad no one loved her and was taking it out on her daughter, which I think was still part of it, but specifying who was going to touch her, after talking about the thing she did to precious... I didn’t realize that until recently and it makes the story even sadder knowing she was being abused sexually by her father, and being abused sexually and physically by her mother.
As awful as this scene is, I can't stop watching it. It's so beautifully acted and so real. Unfortunately, this is how a lot of women think on a far lesser level - the man comes before everyone else.
Fabalocious Dee Monique did such a good job here. You feel her pain but her perspective is definitely warped... that she's jealous of her daughter. But she obviously didn't feel good enough about herself to see the truth
Eugene Murphy Actually he was already married when he settled down with Mary. For all we know, he could have had a good life and he was just a sick, depraved piece of shit. It's not always abuse that breeds abuse.
I never knew Mo'Nique and Mariah were such good actresses!! I know Mo'Nique is a comic genius but I had no idea she was capable of performances like this one. Mariah even admitted she teared up on her own and they kept rolling. Bravo to both of these talented women!
Death Rager If this isn't good acting then I don't know what is. Mariah portrayed a social worker who deals with these types of situations, but a teenager who was impregnated by her father twice? Of course you would cry, abusing that said daughter and not doing anything to stop that abuse from continuing is some sad shit. I'd imagine as a social worker this is that one case you don't want to handle due to all the emotional trauma and abuse done to the victim. Mariah Carey did an amazing job in the film.
-UnLoboconTimbs This is why I know I can't be a social worker. I'm too emotional. This shit would have really bothered me and I would have beat Mo'Nique's ass in front of Precious.
She's always had like a deep raspy voice but her tone has also changed alot throughout the years. You wouldn't think she can sing the way she does with how her speaking voice sounds like
Surely a great example of acting but I would be careful with superlatives. There are a lot of acting gems out there.. specially in the non-mainstream-movies.
Best thing about Monique in this just how she's able to make Mary evil and pathetic almost pitiful all at once . She's unspeakably cruel to Precious yet she's totally reliant on her . By the end of this scene she realises she's not only has she lost her hold over Precious, she's ultimately lost her only support. She tries to get it back only to find it's too late.
Exactly. All the abuse and suffering Mary has put Precious through has finally caught up to her. Now she's all alone with nothing while Precious is moving forward with her babies. Those pity me tears can't save her now.
@@earlaweese sorry but how is it precious’ fault????? Her father had been doing it since she was three, she probably became normalised to it and her father even told her that he will marry her.
This looks like a real situation you would witness in a social worker's office. It feels nauseating, like we're intruding on something vile. So sad to think that there are children going through situations like these. The three ladies gave amazing performances, so realistic that looks like a documentary.
This is a real story for millions of women around the world. It’s way more common than you think. Some men take women who they think are weak and beat them down so that they’ll allow things like this
I find it darkly hilarious but sad as well. A lot of abusive narcissists will go rambling off about the most irrelevant and random things in this kind of situation... that's just what they do when they are cornered or called out.
+Ginger Brown But that had nothing to do with what was going on at the moment. They were talking about abuse going on in the home. Not someone's breast milk. That's what I meant when I made the post. Geesh.
Few people are acknowledging the exceptional acting skills of Gabourey in this scene. She had few lines, but her presence was very much felt. Her facial expressions, the timing of her subtle head movements, her speaking voice, her posture. the gentle awkward tap on the social worker’s knee--brilliant acting. It is quite impressive how she held her own with few lines with Mariah on one side and Monique on the other! Bravo, Gabourey!
"Who else was gonna love me?" In that line right there, Mary gives us the broken piece of her. The lack of love she received as a child that caused her to become as cold and callous as she is today.
Yess when she said that all I saw was a broken woman and the broken little girl coming out at that moment that’s why she’s so mean because she never was shown love and taught how to love.
s a p p h i r e Don't worry, I already knew. What I meant was if she had done this scene alone, she still would have won. Judi Dench won one despite only appearing in her movie for eight minutes.
So I Said what happened was, she worked hard on the movie, and since ending production wanted to spend time with her family. The studio wanted her to go on promotional tour at Cannes, I think, and she refused unless they put her and her family somewhere nice or paid her because this was her personal time she would be sacrificing. So, support from Lee and the studio was taken from her and she was blackballed for being difficult. They felt she should have been grateful and sacrificed her family time for their movie at a financial loss because she would have to pay to have her family with her, and she had already been away from them so long.
Man, what a horrible experience & family. Shit like this actually happens too. This is why social programs & interventions are vital to preserve the well being of the community.
Nubleedajedii06 Incorrect, they are plenty of ways to help. From petitions, from soup kitchens, & even just being more human towards our fellow people. You see, poverty is not caused by a lack of resources, but a lack of compassion & caring.
I am telling you right now, this is one of the BEST pieces of acting I have ever witnessed in my short 64 years. I was moved to the point that I was bawling because it was so real; so real. Monique's character was only doing what she had been programmed to do. That's what was so pitiful about this. Mo'Nique deserved her Oscar, and it's a damn shame she was black balled afterwards.
Heartbreaking story. It may be fiction but it tells the true reality of thousands if not millions who are living in poverty it's the psychological and physical abuse that they live in the things they're vulnerable to ira sad that no one helps them
Abuse happens to people who are not poverty stricken as well.... there are also poor people who are wonderful human beings and single moms that work 3 jobs for their children.... people have a choice to do what’s right poverty or noy
Mo'nique plays such a vile and cruel woman in this movie. The acting in this scene is so powerful and convincing it almost makes you emphasise with her. Not condoning what she did but you can see where she is coming from, resenting her daughter because the man she loved was interested in her instead. Her scenes with Precious (Gabourey Sidibe) make for uncomfortable viewing but the contempt she shows towards her is so realistic it's scary. Acting at its finest
I agree her acting was a master class..well deserved oscar. This part made me so sick to my stomach because most mothers have an instinct to protect their babies.....even in the animal kingdom. Most mothers would have cut that mans hand off before he reached for their baby to abuse them... an example would be mother whales will put their babies on their stomach and push themselves out of he water allowing themselves to be attacked before their baby will suffer. The scene was gut wrenching... it really was. a mothers love should be and is stronger than any love for a man ... in my opinion but sadly that’s not the case sometimes.
This is one of the hardest scenes in a film I've ever had to watch. Mo'Nique.....it's indescribable. Her performance here is shattering. Mariah Carey is also incredible here. and Gabourey Sidibe is also of course just heartbreakingly good.
Narcissism is the most sinister form of mental abuse, we need a national campaign to raise awareness. Precious's mother blames instead of taking responsibility because she's a narcissist. Narcissism is pathological, there is no cure for those demons. If I were given the chance to reform our education-system, I would make children recite the Narcissist's Prayer instead of the Pledge of Allegiance. No Precious, you're not stupid, you just got dealt the wrong cards, raised by a demon and forced to love it because you didn't know better.
I think it is exactly what made this scene so impactful. To know that someone could suffer such abuse and heartache and yet continue the cycle and inflict that abuse onto their own child. There’s a devastating duality to it.
When I was watching this I just looked away. I held my face in my hands and looked away, I only realised now watching this that Mariah Carey did the exact same thing. I just couldn't even look as I was listening.
All the pity me tears in the world can't save you now, Mary. I'm so glad she was exposed as the heartless monster she was. She's crying for herself. Not the horrendous abuse she allowed and even dared to blame Precious for. What amazing acting from everyone in this movie.
I think the problem in our society is that we try and come up with these abc, 123 responses to complicated struggles. From watching this, she wasn't "picking a partner over her child" as much as she was choosing what she deemed to be her only source of love over loving her own child. I don't think it was about the man. It was about the "love" he provided. "Who was gonna love me?" The book was incredible (while hard to read because of how raw it was) but Monique did something that I didn't think was possible. She gave humanity to her character and really peeled at the layers of the onion. Like, I was crying for both of them. Monique is a legend for real. From being a great comedian to this? Just...wow.
yea somehow she got me feeling sorry for this mean spirited character/mother. iI begin rooting for her too. But someone had to lose. Separation at this point was mandatory. The child said it best....bye.
Sadly i know a lot of females that were like this. Mothers competing with their daughter. I knew this case that was where i lived that This mother killed her daughter because she thought that she waa gonna stral her boyfriend. sad sad sad
Mo'Nique needs to get back into Drama again, as soon as she won the Oscar she went back to comedy, why? This is considered one of the best performances to win supporting actress this century so far, maybe even one of the best wins ever and she still doesn't do drama. Despite this. I think its so cool how she also refused to campaign at all for the oscar which is normally what people who want to win do, but she let her performance speak which I think is very admirable.

She tried to argue that “Precious” didn’t scream or yell, but my response would’ve been,
“You just told me that he was touching her as a baby, while y’all were having sex!!! You didn’t get up and punch his ass then?????”
And then asked her if she remembers her own birth.

It's the tears of a clown. They are always putting on an act to make people laugh. It's probably easier for them to just act real for once.
Jasmine Simmons that's because some gifted comedians laugh through their trauma the reason their comic is genius and helps them keep their sanity to tell other's who might and will go crazy😱.....and when they relive the story they speak it as if it's happening vividly in the moment

I didn’t realize that until recently and it makes the story even sadder knowing she was being abused sexually by her father, and being abused sexually and physically by her mother.

...and how often do we see broken people in her situation in real life? All too often. It’s really unfortunate.

Lee Daniels blackballed her in Hollywood because she wouldn't campaign for her Oscar
One of the best performances ever. The fact she went off script makes it even more impressive. Praise for Monique.

Just...wow.

Monique is such a sweet person she probably played with this girl on set that's why she knows her name well.
I don't care if the mother is mentally unwell, she KNOWS right from wrong, which is why she pretended in the beginning.
Mary is such a horrible person, but Mo'nique is so amazing in this scene, you almost feel sympathy for her. This scene feels too real
Sara Katherine You're pretty.
Sara Katherine I went to go see it it was breathtaking
Aye what's yo Instagram
Sara Katherine ** nah. its more wicked than that....... She sold. her soul""" to the Devil,, Illuminati .... all those end up in Hell only have themselves to blame. the poor are God's chosen people . ( Bible ) James 2:5 Listen my beloved brethren has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in #faith. and heirs to the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him. 2:6 But you have dishonored the poor man do not the rich oppress u and drag u into the courts. ** the Bible is the Truth, Jesus is the way, this world trust in Oppression, the word says do not trust in Oppression , nor vainly hope in robbery if riches increase do not set your heart on them. amen .
Slayton701 where's your proof that she did that?
People who mistreated others end up very lonely
Some people deserve to be alone
@RadioJHAlex sk1n LOL true.
I mistreated people when I was a teen and it tears me up inside when I think about all those I wrong. If I could I would tell them I'm so damn sorry for all I've done and I would do anything to take it back
@Killah Frost18x doesn't matter why now, what matters is that I repent from what I done to others and let others know I am not proud of what kind of person I was
No they usually don't, sadly
When I first saw this in the trailer I was like OH MY GOSH THIS IS THE GIRL FROM PHAT GURLZ! Mo'Nique was so amazing in this movie it takes A LOT to even take this performance. She had the guts to take a role that was just so visceral and that alone earned her respect. I was so happy she won the Oscar I think I cried because I was really rooting for her and all that shit about not appearing in promotions DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO RUIN HER. One of the years the Academy got it right... well, got one right I'd say
Fatty
Typical black mothers 😂
Emi Smith Tb1000 #facts
5:55 right when you think there might be some kind of redemption for this character she drops this line, just a glimpse into the mind of a severely corrupt person, her getting those pumps of hand sanitizer as if she’s cleansing herself after revealing the atrocities committed against Precious, great writing.
9:04 - 9:13 Me when I find my head in the freezer for ice cream at 2AM, but I know I'm on a diet.
rofl

She forgot her damn birthday... 😂😂😂 its not funny but she was acting like she really knew when her bday was.
MadMuziQ Moss 😂😂😂😂😂
MadMuziQ Moss "the summertime...yea, u was born in the summertime." she was all sure and shit til precious shut her ass down! "...I was born in NOVEMBER!"😂😫
MadMuziQ Moss ctfu 😂😂 im done with this whole seen!
and then she asked precious as if she would remember
same way "you" act when you think you know the answers on a test LMAO
Surreal. I wish I could write dialogues like this. Just the dialogue itself is amazing. the actors made it shine.
I know right. As a writer this is the type of natural dialogue I aspire to write.
I have a cousin that went through a very, similar situation like Precious did. I’ve always wanted to be a social worker, because of her, but was always conflicted. This movie really inspired me to go through with it.
that's really nice to hear, thank you!
Good 👍
