  • Marie Casimel from Stellat'en First Nation has been making bannock ever since her grandmother showed her how as a young girl. Now, Marie is ready to pass on her family's recipe and teach everyone how to make bannock.
    INGREDIENTS:
    For a large batch
    8 cups - All-purpose flour
    8 Tbsp - Baking powder
    4 tsp - Salt
    4 Tbsp - Sugar
    4 cup - Warm water
    Canola oil
For a smaller batch (serves 4)
    2 cups - All-purpose flour
    2 Tbsp - Baking powder
    1 tsp - Salt
    1 Tbsp - Sugar
    1 cup - Warm water
    Canola oil
    DIRECTIONS
    1) Stir together all dry ingredients in a large bowl.
    2) Add warm water and mix well until the dough forms a ball.
    3) Knead the dough in the bowl, adding small amounts of flour if needed.
    4) Pour about 1 inch of oil in the bottom of a cast iron pan and heat over medium to medium-high heat.
    5) Portion out dough into palm-sized pieces and fry until browned. Turn to brown the other side.
    6) Place on paper-towel lined plate to drain.

So happy I stumbled across this.. not only for the beautiful bannock, but the stories involved. Thank you Ms. Marie. I’m 56 and when my children/grandchildren are in the kitchen learning from me, I tell stories of my youth as well. They will remember us well. Much Love❤️🪶

Lard is healthier than oils because oils are usually partially or fully hydrogenated and high heat processed. We have come full circle back to the old ways of real butter and lard being better for us.

Olive oil is cold pressed. One of the best oils you can eat. There's a reason people have been using it for ages.

A co worker made Bannock bread for lunch, and I fell in love with it. Had to learn how to make it. You are so calm in this video which made it easier to follow. Only part I got stumped on was, before you began to knead the dough you didnt mention if and how much flour to add. I went on a wym and added as i mixed with my hands. Dough turned iut well, the end result...yet to find out :) thank you for this recipe!

Your grandmother was right! Lard is much better for your health. Please research all oils and see how bad they are for you. Look at the processes used to create them and you’ll realise they are toxic. I’m in your age group and have only realised it in the last 2 years of researching for my own health.
