    Back in the BoyScouts (1960s) we use to make this stuff. Round off the end of a 4-5" stick to look like the end of a baseball bat and mold the bannock over the end. Lean it near the fire and bake it into a bread bowl.

      Yes, the more you handle the tougher it gets. I leave it sticky and plop on a floured surface, add a little more on top, fold it into itself a couple times and ready to go. You can see what he is. Handling already looks VERY stiff. It should be SOFT and PLIABLE, not a hockey puck!!😲😢

    Got home on me lunch break and this is making me hungrier! lol. I love a biscuit and I've always said that Bannock is a tough type of biscuit really dense. You are right though...it does feel and seem just like a pizza dough...and that would make a cool video to shoot...Pizza Bannock! But not on a stick...lol.

      Its NOT suppose to be TOUGH!! Actually, soft inside, As a biscuit, it should be softer inside like a dinner roll, not like the stiffer buttermilk biscuit and definitely NOT LIKE A ROCK!!😲😢 He also did not check the oil temp or depth of the oil. It never should have burned nor the pan burn like that. We need to send him back to class on making Bannock 101!!😊😊🤔

      James McIntyre good morning thank you brotha! I like it because it's a hard bread and it works real good put in your pack and hitting the trail. it doesn't break apart and fall apart like biscuits or normal bread does it doesn't get smashed either.

    You need about 60% hydration for most bread doughs. My favorite Kaiser roll recipe is hydrated at 67%. A quarter cup of water is not enough even with the oil you added to it. I would have used milk instead of water - it makes a better bread.

    There is a differance between the measuring cups. So note to self, liquid measuring cup can only be used for liquid ingrients only. The cup u measured the water with is a measuring cup but only used for dry ingredients.... There is a differance between them....

      There are numerous ways to make Bannock. I've been making it for years. I'm still experimenting but I have some exciting ideas I'm going to try. I noticed that there is even a "flour" substitute for a Keto recipe for frybread and a recipe for making it in one of those air fryer machines. A friend of mine uses those Pillsbury biscuits in the pop can, separating out the biscuits, stretching and flattening into a big disc and into the hot oil it goes. Looks like a disc of frybread but still tastes like a "fried" biscuit, 😄 not frybread. Still awesome!Even the different tribes have many different ways and recipes on frybread. So experiment not only with the dough but the fillings and condiments as well. There's a whole world of "Bannock " out there waiting to be discovered!😀🤗

    I tried just made a sticky mess on my hands

    • @mikkikas6821
      @mikkikas6821 Рік тому +1

      If it is too sticky, add a little more flour . I've makes it sticky for many years the Ojibwe way,, but I mix with a fork until I'm ready to take it out on a floured board or counter top. Once mixed, form it into a ball using floured hands and plop it down onto a floured surface. Sprinkle a little flour and press it out, fold it in half, knead it together and fold it into itself like that a couple more times. The dough should be very soft and pliable. Now you're ready to work with it. Once you've done this, the next time won't nearly be a stick mess! If you bake it be sure to oil the pan so it won't stick. It will rise in the oven unless the baking powder is old. I bake it if I want a biscuit style to cut open and spread on a filling, egg and cheese, jam, what ever. But to make into regular frybread I skillet fry in oil, making sure there is room under the bread to float. This frybread I stretch into discs usually to make tacos or just add cinnamon sugar or honey with powdered sugar like an elephant ear. Have fun!!🤗
