I never really experienced really bad players when playing online. All the random people I hunted were pretty cool.
But I understand what they are trying to do. If people keep buying these microtransactions the developers will keep doing them and it will get worse.
But I don't believe kicking other people will fix this problem. Why would people change their spending habits because of some rando.
Also the community is known for being welcoming. Don't let microtransactions destroy this good part of the community.

I remember when I first fought Fatty when he dropped for world, I was still fighting him and finally killed him and wanted to farm him more with some people who have had more experience with Fatty then I did so I made a post to find a hunter group to farm Fatty with me and teach me a thing or two then I got someone and invited him to a party I think his name was S1X NUK3D but besides that he seemed normal but then when our 3rd person joined us and he flipped and had a meltdown calling my build trash and I was running an Anti Fatty Build for an easier hunt but after his fit he left the party and I just ended up making a new hunter squad with positive energy we killed Fatty 4 times and made a full set out of him. I'm with them on this. if they don't want to run quests with people who pay into something they explicitly disapprove of, then I don't see an issue here. It's called freedom of association. they don't want to work together with people who encourage that...they're free to. The title space of a title has far too little space to use for warnings.
And no...monster hunter players are not always positive, the amount of players that are ttoxic have never been a "small" portion of them. it might not be the majority, but it has always been a relevantly-sized minority. Even back in Tri, I saw front and center actual cross-forum/community feuds between subsections of the playerbase. One example being that GameFAQs forum and the Capcom Unity forum having beef with one another. Online gaming is like this, it's called Tribalism and it's a part of the human experience. Differing groups with differing views will have conflicts and that's simply life.
In this case, someone has an ethical disagreement with another because the topic at hand doesn't stop having an impact on them simply because it was their wallet. This is how people who have no direct way to redress grievance get problems solved, regardless of majority or minority status. you see this with any form of civil disobedience. inconveniencing the majority, who are so thoughtless as to enable the banality of evil, in order to have an effect on the provider is and long has been a legitimate form of protest. Stigmatizing paid DLC now that it has shown that it will continue to encroach on things so that future purchases become less common until they finally become insufficiently profitable is the aim.

I think this is just an unfortunate side effect of Monster Hunter massively gaining popularity in the recent years. Before, the community felt a lot more welcoming and wholesome when it was small and niche (in the US), because they just wanted other people to give their favorite game a chance and join in on the fun. But now that the community is much larger you start seeing a lot more elitists and sweaties. The MonHun community is probably still one of the better ones out there, but I do miss the old family vibe community

    • @graveyardqt

I think a good reason is the games weren't utilized with true online functionality until mh tri on wii, unless you owned mh2 or mh on ps2 with a online adapter. Otherwise, I remember ad-hoc being the thing that brought friends together. Mh tri through the 3ds games grew the online side of community, opening the door to mainstream. Not that I hate that it hit mainstream. But, once it did with world, people started wanting the dlc akin to live service games like destiny. Unfortunately, heavy monetization seems to be a requirement for AAA game studios to keep up with the lack of being able to improve the base 60$ price tag. The fan base improves in numbers, meaning more ignorant opinions and mindsets, more things to adjust, more people to make happy. The time they take to develop and the manpower they use to make these things happen keeps skyrocketing the more technology improves, which means more money is needed. I just wish there was a better way to go about it, really. But, still- I love all hunters, even if they may support monetization that COULD get to a toxic level at some point in the future. I just hope they took some time to calm down and realize it's not like other games, and to lower their expectations to the level monster hunter has always been at: polished and mythical and absolutely fun to play.

@@Floridamangaming729 World wasn't what made Monster Hunter a good game, nor was it the first one. World was great and had A LOT of issues of its own. Rise lines up with the games before world when it comes to content, even matching World in Quantity, and it isnt even over with the updates going into next year. The value of the updates are also huge. I think you just want Monster Hunter World 2, which will never happen. World was the outlier, it was massively different than any other title. World was also the one to bring in heavy amounts of toxicity. I support the hell out of that game but, elitists who praise the game for being perfect do nothing but add to the toxicity because all it does is divide the community more. Just because something isn't a direct faithful sequel to a game sequel that's never worked that way in the past doesn't make it bad. When Monster Hunter 6 gets announced last quarter of 2023, it will most likely be more akin to that of world in fidelity, but the practices for dlc and polish and care are in every single game, including rise and I bet should be even in mh6, because they've never ever let me down when it comes to content and quality. I'm super curious, why do you feel that way about rise/sunbreak? Open to discussion! 💖

On one hand, you can be far more flexible with your loadouts and tailor them to your specific play-style, as well as use skills that were practically tied to certain armour sets previously (looking at you, Earplugs).
On the other hand, this makes min-maxing possible, and with World and Rise opening the franchise up to people who are used to playing games like Destiny, which *expect* min-maxed setups, you've got a recipe for trouble. Toxicity has been around since MH1 days but as time has gone on the toxic nature has gone from the old games to the new games.
Before 3U I didn't meet a lot of toxic people, but after 3U was released I started seeing a lot more elitists basically demanding the game be played there way or to not play at all, 4U had another issue, if you wanted to find someone to help you get through online quests, you'd have to go through a mountain of people that would criticize and basically tell you that you suck. Even now I have a friend who wanted help with G-Rank and was told "No it's easy just get better", on top of this if you aren't wearing a mix set these days you're seen as a bad player.
I didn't play Gen enough to truly get into Online and I never cared for GU so I can't speak on that.
But these days most of the toxicity has moved to Iceborne and Rise, the small communities that still play the older titles are generally really nice and accepting, having recently played through 3Tri's online thanks to the community working on the servers, and now enjoying MH1.

I remember back in 2019 I was just making jump from high rank to g rank with my full azure rathalos set and was looking at farming my first g rank set. Some guy joins the lobby and says "your set is bad, so bad that I almost want to leave". The other guy I was with in the lobby with and myself just waved and told him "suit yourself". If you don't want to help a hunter out and give some pointers why waste your breath spewing nonsense. This is why people leave the franchise. That's been my only toxic encounter since I got into the series in 2018. I see a lot of other players talking about the "veterans" gatekeeping though.

I love Monster Hunter and it's community sooo much. I remember playing World/Iceborne for the first time, just as I got to reach High Rank, a couple of people from the Facebook Group I was in hopped in my server and helped me with a lot of the hunts. A couple hours later they asked "Are we getting annoying?" because they noticed how it's always them one-shotting the monster and finishing the quest before 10 mins, I didn't really get to enjoy the hunts, so I asked if they could adjust to me, and they happily did, they all used hunting horns to buff me up while I was there getting my ass beaten, they were typing in chat when and what moves to dodge, or which zones to go to. It's reaaally fun and refreshing, every time I go back to the gathering hub, there'd be people waving and gathering around me since I had the lowest armor of the server, I have yet to experience this in Rise/Sunbreak, but I am sooo looking forward to it. These so called "controversies" are nothing but just adjustments that Capcom's taking since MH has been getting bigger and bigger, and with competition coming (Wild Hearts by EA and Koei), whether or not it's gonna be successful, they will definitely bring something new, and Capcom needs to do something. I honestly don't think this is a bad thing per se, you can just NOT buy the layered armour/weapons, it's your money and you it's not mandatory to buy these things. Buying the games is already more than enough to support the devs, it's fckin Capcom for crying out loud. But yes, I do agree that it beats the purpose of grinding for the layered armour and weapons, which to me makes it feel like a gacha game because you get better things by paying more. Other than that, I am happy with whatever is up there rn, I would rather not buy it, but if I happened to have those completionist moments, then maybe I will. But yeah, this is mostly my opinion on that, feel free to correct me.

Thank you for this video, even it has past already 5months and I'm waiting to get my hands on Sunbreak in Spring!
My 1st experience with toxic players was way back in MH Try on the Wii, where I had an amazing mixed set and was way ahead of the whole lobby, but the host told me to get a full set or leave, if I refused he'd kick me.
As my 2nd: I once helped solo an other player get his urgent Quest 2 Agnaktor done and he died way to fast 2 times and I told him multiple times not to enter the room I'm fighting in as I really want to help him and him not getting carted the 3rd time. His curiosity couldn't stop him from entering the room. As an matter of fact, the Firebeam from Agnaktor hit him across the map and instantly killed him... which ofc let to the Failed quest.
3rd experience which stuck with me was, the MH Try Alatreon Cluster speed run, where I sadly didn't have the armour and weapon for but the left me go with them, even they knew I'm not ready. Afterwards the told me to get the right armour with the required skills. This was in the end my bad, but I was happy to had the experience once.
So yeah, that's my fair share of the community behaviour, which is mostly positive as in World there were many players with lower armours but had better skill than most player of the party which surprises you often times as you really aren't sure if their armour represents their skill or your failed mission after 3 used carts XD

Nowadays everyone clears the quest. So patience and turns matter less. There was a small subset of elitists but I think its pretty rare. I remember in 4U joining a room with a few people that wanted to kick me for having a clownsuit and under 600 defense for an Apex Tigrex quest. I said it was pretty unfair to judge when you dont know someones skill and that they can check my guild card if I carted frequently on my last quests. I also said that my build was for status dual blades so my build was a deliberate choice. The lobby leader told me fine but if you cart once youre getting kicked. Before we left on the quest I told him "Dont cart". He ended up carting all three times. He also abandoned the lobby after failing the quest. I appreciate you mentioning that the toxic elements of the community is a small but vocal members of the community. Another small and vocal member of the community are players who say they got kicked from 12 lobbies. If you think it is your DLC weapon skin that is getting you kicked, you have the option to not present it.
It is true that the developers are not seeing any of the DLC skins money. it is just the shareholders of Capcom. but by buying these DLC skins, more and more development time will be allocated to these types of cheap to make skins in comparison to making huge expansions. I don't have any numbers before me, but I am confident that the profit margins (how much money they have to spend to pay someone to make DLC vs how much money they make) is higher for making skins than making the large expansion. That means everytime someone buys a skin that profit margin favors the skin over expansion.
everyone loves to look at Bethesda as the example from Morrowind horse armor to fallout 76, but the people upset about the cosmetic only DLC turned out to be right. as long as you show that the smaller DLC makes a higher profit margin, the company will direct more time to that over (in fallout 76 's case) making the game even playable. (yes fallout 76 is much better now, but they kept adding things to the atomic shop far longer than they should have when the game was unplayable)

I would usually get kicked from sessions, be made fun of by clans, all because I didn't build my equipment right, or I should say, couldn't. Because no matter how hard I grinded for jewels/decos, I could never get the right decos and materials for "optimal" builds. People would often flex on me with their builds or brag about how they have more or better decos than me or a higher HR. Not to mention, each and every time I needed help fighting a monster, I would 9 times outta 10, get shunned for the fact I couldn't do it on my own. to me mh community is still the same as always
some talking about the monster design
some talking about the armor skills
some talking about which weapon is best
and some are talking about how horny they are for NPCs (even the monsters)
seeing people discussing how it's changing, and even coming up with a new term "world babies" is so foreign to me, gatekeeping stuff for the smallest/weirdest reasons
I've always let people do anything they want in mh, just do your stuff, we're all here to hunt monster and have fun afterall
and regarding the paid dlc layered weapon I don't really mind it tbh, yea it sucks that the best weapon is behind a paywall but then again, it's so so much extra than anything else
even for an event quest weapon, nothing really looked like Lost Code before, so I can understand the paywall. and it's just cosmetic

In regards to the toxicity surrounding the new DLC, I find it interesting how this is only an issue within the western side of the community. On the Japanese the side, the issues being brought up here are completely unknown to them. They wouldn't understand why people are getting kicked over using layered weapons. Heck, there's probably a number of foreign players out there who got kicked for this type of thing never knowing the reason for it. I think to a certain extent, people may be right in saying that the community has gotten significantly worse since World's release. The popularity in the west has gotten significantly bigger, but with it comes with a large group of bad actors. Behavior like this really makes us look bad to the rest of the community and shouldn't be tolerated. I'm on the stance that the Rise has been going a bit too far with the DLC, but kicking and harassing other players isn't the solution we should be seeking.

In the western side of things yes it's a 'problem' if you happen to have any DLC with you. I don't know why but that's my observation. Thankfully I have yet to be kicked in any server, probably because most of the groups and randos I play with just don't care about my layered armor.

@@ookamithefangjoker Agreed. If you look at the replies on the Japanese Twitter posts, there tends to be a lot more people praising the looks of the equipment and very little negativity around them. It's a complete contrast to how its viewed in the west. My guess is that negativity is amplified a lot more in the west because of the community's size and also because we have way more content creators talking about drama in the community. You wouldn't really see any Japanese Monster Hunter youtuber/influencer talk about this type of thing.
Plus like you said, it's all just cosmetics. The Japanese community tend to not really care about what you use, even if the skills are suboptimal. The only exception would be if you happen to stumble upon a room dedicated to speed farming stuff, but aside from that the Japanese community will collectively call out people if someone is whining about other people's gear or is being rude.

Although, the concern over reduced free content and increasing DLC is definitely a valid concern we should all have. What I'll say is that the toxicity within the MH community really started to fester when MHW had its PC launch. More users, larger potential player base means more chance to get toxic players who troll and want to ruin other honest players' day. There were hackers on the PC and while it was not in any extreme measure of course, it was enough that warranted PC players to speak up about it. Then there were timed events and content exclusivity that exacerbated the problem. It by no means am I insinuating toxicity was exclusive to PC as Xbox and PS4 had their share, but given how the console versions were locked to quick chat. Players are more prone to just try to clear the quest at the very least. PC players feels like they're more toxic as they do not have limiting factors (like being able to hack the game), and a more feasible accessibility to typing in chat.
The success of World and IB set a precedent for when Rise was announced. There was an already growing playerbase, and now that switch users were being welcomed into the MH community, this also brought even more PC users as players would know a PC release is to be announced.
PC users probably make up the largest portion of players especially in Rise because of how popular/marketed it was to old/current/new players of the franchise and probably the most vocal too.

As someone who has played since the very first game, I would say that the small propensity towards what people would call toxic behavior has always existed, but outside of the split in the original games community on the subject of headlocking, I really can't recall any real heavy shitty behavior from most people, granted there were only around 3- maaaaybe 5k total people total in the original online, and we were all sorta dumb dumbs so maybe the room for the sort of stuff that exists around the series now just didn't exist when the series was brand now. It's funny because past the original PS2 game I only ever really played with friends because the series went mobile for so long, and now I don't really play with Randoms that often so I can't really speak to the shift in the community from then to now very well. I do definetly recall some really basic "you suck and you don't know how to play because X,Y,Z" type stuff back in the day, but nothing that isn't present in ANY online community to SOME extent.

That was before Lost Code and DLC Pack 7. Sure, you don't HAVE TO buy all of it, but the fact that you can dump that much money after the buying the game in the span of not even 1.5 years? Yeah, that is a problem. But that's a much bigger discussion to be had. And while the packs are genuinely good deals, I really question the price of the individual items. Just the "Fall" Layered Armor (including Buddies) clocks in at just under half of DLC Pack 7. But again, greater discussion. Only hopes are the surveys and voting with our wallets by not buying. Not letting a player play the game they bought is probably the most toxic thing you can do just for them getting a paid cosmetic. Paid cosmetics are not good long term but thats for people and their wallets to decide, not you for them. If they wanna blow money thats on them.

Nobody's stopping them playing the game, they're just removing them from their own personal experience. Plenty of other lobbies available, but as the Host of my lobby I reserve the right to boot anybody for any reason. I shouldn't have to spend my time playing with people that support poor business practices if I don't want to.

@@j.jbinks9669 You must be pleasant in real life, too.
Imagine you walk in a room and start eating chocolate. I’ll kick you out of the room. It’s because you support shady business which involves most child slavery on the planet. You won’t know the reason though, nobody will tell you.
      You’re calling such behaviour fine?

The thing is tho, Capcom is the one in the wrong for pushing the dlc to what it got but the players aren't innocent either.
Without people buying and enabling this practice, capcom wouldn't insist into pushing this type of thing, same thing as it was in wow as you mentioned. Just hope that capcom doens't do a blizzard move and think removing the ban option will be the solution for this problem that they themselves created. I haven't played sunbreak in a while, but if this "bullying drama" is enough to tell capcom that this isn't ok and put the breakers on it before it goes even further with dlc monsters and whatnot in the next entrie, i don't see a problem with it. In the end of the day you are entitled to ban anyone you don't want being part of your lobby for any reason.
That being said, the community right now is on a phase of copium and white knighting for capcom when it comes to DLC stuff, people doing this are most likely a very angry minority.

Me still just waiting for the next year until there's actual contact. I've done every single hunt waiting for my boi gammoth to enter the scene.

the only thing that im salty about is that i remember watching a video on scraped weapon ideas, and one specifically was super cool to me, that would be a giant boomerang and fists. as far as i know there have not been really any new weapons for quite some time

"Giant boomerang", "Fists"... Sounds like Magnet Spike and Tonfa respectively to be honest... In terms of shape and function.

Christ. I am a league of legends survivor. Y’all don’t know the meaning of toxicity.
If you want to support capcom’s shit dlc decisions and people kick you for actively supporting the downfall of the game, you can still play the game by yourself. It’s really not a big deal.

Classic internet behaviour. Holding an extremely minor gripe about a person you don't know & then defining them by it, disregarding the fact there is actually a real & complex human being on the other end. DLC issues aside, regardless of stance - they're taking issue with the wrong people.
This kind of toxicity is like road rage - I've learned it's inherent to the internet & will never go away sadly. Hopefully more steps are taken to limit it in future.

I've only ever had 1 bad experience in mh and that was in world I started a hunt for an tempered black diablos and 3 randoms joined. An ls, cb and a fellow Sns the other sns guy was pretty new so ended up carting once but the ls guy carted twice ending the quest. The thing is the ls guy was mad cuz apparently he was doing the most damage he typed in chat that he did 70% of the hunt when all he did was interrupt us when trying to KO the diablos and just ignored the tail. Ls guy would shoot stones at the cb and me for guarding against the diablos and it would waste a lot of the stamina leading us to retreat to gain more stamina and he ended up trying to fight the diablos alone and ended up carting twice. At the end he blamed the other sns guy for being noob. Honestly I just started the quest for fun and I invited the other 2 for some more hunts and we enjoyed a few more hunts until we were having trouble with a nergigante investigation so we used the sos and he appeared again and just did the same stuff and we ended up almost failing the quest

I've dealt with toxic players since the 3DS era. I remember one time in Generations when another player insisted I change weapons and equip a different talisman even though I was using a full Deviant set (had a set amount of skills and no gem slots) and had not spent hours "coal-mining" for talismans. Pretty sure I was the only one that didn't cart in the following quest.
Other examples of toxicity I encountered included people flashbombing and setting traps to interrupt monster mounts. That happened as late as World.
I also had a friend that was kicked from several rooms when wearing Seregios' armor in 4 Ultimate. Apparently that was a frequent thing too because the elitist side of the community considered it a "noob trap" armor.
Oh, and let's not forget in Generations when players were setting up rooms that prohibited using specific Hunting Styles.
I also once had a good friend (we aren't any longer) who promoted gatekeeping practices.
Overall my experience has been positive, because I generally only play with a small handful of friends I know in real life, and I don't browse forums or anything. But those times where the toxicity bled through the cracks really stick out.
