One thing i always love about Mike is that, not only does he have incredible chops, but he always does something cheeky, with his own brand of humour. He really does enjoy it, and its easy to see that.
PLEASE PLEASE DO MORE DREAM THEATER 🤞🤞🤞
That band had several gold albums. The whole crew was professional and passionate
Portnoy is back to being the drummer for Dream Theater. Seeing them live is a magical feeling beyond words. I'd love to see you reacting to Under A Glass Moon. Portnoy has a way of not only being a rhythm player but also bringing drums to have a counter-melody in their songs.
Everything is awesome by Dream Theater. Train of Thought is their heaviest and brutally technical album. But they just have so many insanely epic tracks. You could just pick one and be amazed.
That entire album is beast. I dont' much hear much about Liqud Tension Experiment.
Another of Portnoy's projects. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_Tension_Experiment
They're all incredible but they haven't been the same since Portnoy left. He was the heart in a band full of technical monsters
Mike portnoy is actually back with dreamtheater now
i think Portnoy had a better sound than Mangini in Dream Theater... Mangini may be more technical but I think Mike had more funky feel. Both are crazy f'ing drummers.
I kinda feel like Neil passed the torch to Mike 🧡
Portnoy fills for lifeeee!!
Hes a madman
Also "dance of eternity"
is a hard ass song to play on drums.
All the diff time signatures used. Insane!!!
You have to check out Portnoy’s drumming on the 2nd CD of the Album Innocence and Danger by the Neal Morse Band. This may be Mike’s best drumming yet. His ability to creatively compose is otherworldly! I think he is one of the best if not the best! Definitely beyond Neil Pert. Estepanero is right there on his heels but I think Mike is more creative.
Check out the complete Live at Budokan Concert. My favourite Concert ever. And the song Octavarium ist may be my favourite Live Song from the Score 2006 DVD.
They’ve been decades of Awsome for me. I’ve never seen this but love Mike and the boys. All there music is super.
Now Portnoy Portnoy is back in the band after 13 years away, it's a great homecoming. The one pattern you heard (bumbumbum bumbumbum bumbumbum bum) is the traditional Japanese hand clap. Very cool that Mike that incorporated that. I saw Dream Theater live in 2008 during the Prog Nation Tour. This was in support of their Systematic Chaos record. Along with DT on that tour were Three, Between The Buried and Me and Opeth. I was thrilled that John saw me give a thumbs up to him (he reciprocated). I was just so into the show that I was drenched in sweat and it was such a high. After the gig I went out to eat with my then girlfriend and I downed about 4 waters and 6 Mountain Dew's and chowed on a burger and fries (but could not finish it all.) On the way home, I started getting woozy and sick to my stomach. I told my girlfriend to pull over cause I knew I was about to lose it. She said "We're almost back home, do you think you can hold it back." Nope I could not and just spewed in the van and on my leftovers. BEST NIGHT EVER! And I shout that as a life long metal fan. Great show, good chow, and puke after! Can't get more metal than that LOL!
Well, in my opinion the best I ever heard Mike play was a song called When the Water Breaks-live in LA by the side project called Liquid Tension Experiment. But be warned it's 18 minutes long. Favorite Dream Theater song is The Count of Tuscany.
Mike Mangini is their current drummer. He's a machine!
Top 3 drummers ever - Thomas Lang, Mike Portnoy, Mike Mangini. That’s the holy Trinity of drumming
How about "Dance of eternity" with Dream Theatre, it has 103 time signature changes in 6 min 40 sec.
Also found this while back.
Some equipment he used/uses..
For the recording of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Train of Thought, Mike used a kit called the “Siamese Monster”. For Octavarium he used a white kit called the “Albino Monster”.
Mike uses TAMA Starclassic drums, Sabian cymbals, TAMA Iron Cobra pedals and hi-hats, Latin percussion, Remo heads and Pro-Mark 420 custom sticks.
He has a signature snare drum series from Tama called “Melody Master”; named after his daughter. There’s also a Sabian “Max Stax” symbals, which are named after his son.
All those drummers are the best at what they do but damn man Neil will always be at the top of my list, R.I.P Neil
2:05 Mike plays Tama drums (the kit is called The Siamese Monster) and he plays Sabian cymbals (his custom snare drums are called Melody Masters. They have 3 snare settings. His custom cymbals are his Max Splashes 7,9,11” and his Max Stax 8/8, 10/10, 12/14)
As per u say that he is good, don't forgot that he is a legend
Dude, if you haven't your really need to listen to the Train of thought album. One of my favorites. If you want a nice long one, I can highly recommend "A Change of Seasons - The Crimson Sunrise / Innocence / Carpe Diem / The Darkest of Winters / Another World / The Inevitable Summer / The Crimson Sunset · Dream Theater"
1. Tama Starclassic maple. 2. Mike Mangini replaced him in DT. an EXCELLENT drummer in his own right. Mangini has some very regimented practice routines that he does share on YT if you look.
When The ReV passed, Mike Portnoy toured with them to play the rev's part. He recorded the drums for the album version of So far away
Favorite DT tunes: Dark Eternal night. As previously mentioned "A change of season", "the great debate"
It's crazy to me that Colby can even add comments and actually create a reaction that isn't just mouth open drooling at this video. Portnoy is an animal.
The great debate
Yeah very close to Tool style but on steroids
Awesome drumming! Thanks for sharing some Dream Theater music and Mike Portmoy’s supreme musicianship on the drums.✌️👍 A great video to react to is a DT keeper called, The Great Debate…thanks!
Mike Portnoy is my alltime favourite
Check Mike Mangini he is current drummer of the Dream Theater. And he is one of the best drummer of all time 👍
I believe this from Train of Thought tour. DT fans all know the artwork from our good friend Mr. Hatlee on the bass drums. Mike is a monster drummer! They ate extremely tight live you must see them.
Moore Dt, especially the song Home by them! It's like Tool on steroids
When Portnoy left DT, I died a little bit inside. But he went to Avenged Sevenfold to fill in after the passing of their drummer, Jimmy's, death.
Carey is still my favorite drummer, but I love Mike Portnoy. ❤️
Mike plays in Transatlantic now.
Peart will forever be #1
Mike plays Tama Starclassic Bubinga with a mix of Sabian AAX and HHX cymbals. And Pro Mark sticks...
Listen to Instrumedley by Dream Theater live at Budokan. 4 cameras to all instruments.. best live show they ever made.
Mike is now back with Dream Theater
Mike Portnoy is a very amazing drummer. You have to listen his drum solo in "Live at Budokan" album. He made an amazing duet with Jordan Rudess (piano). Listen and enjoy it.
Definitely more Dream Theater for sure! But can you also do Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree?
Neil, Mike, Stewart Copeland, Chester Thompson
new drummer ►► Mike Portnoy !!! OVER ALL!!!!!
How about Mike Portnoy playing live with Flying Colors on the song Blue Ocean?
would be great if you react to Dream theater's Drummer audition
Tama for the most part
Mike Portnoy IS BACK in Dream Theater....
Check out their dance of eternity or Instrumedely…
Mike plays Tama drums.
Sabian cymbals
No and no......better than Estepario or Peart
Mike commented on a Estepario video.
El Estepario Siberiano was doing a break down of Dance of Eternity ( DT song ) and said it was one of the hardest songs he ever had to learn. Mike couldn't have thanked him enough and said Estepario is pure fire.
I wrote a comment about a drum cam video you maybe will react, here in You Tube with Mike Mangini tvice, but is not shown here, why?
How about the Neal Morse band or flying colors??? They both feature Mike Portnoy. One song called author of confusion has mind blowing drum work by Portnoy! He’s definitely my favorite. It’s not fair to compare him and Estepanaro. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. They are both amazing drummers. Just can’t say one is better than the other. They are just different in their approaches. More Often I like mikes composition better.
Man, you need to react to Eloy Casagrande (Sepultura) playing The Heretic Anthem by Slipknot. It's completely insane.
Port oh is back
Tama
Favorite DT song for me? Voices
For me Mike is the best!! 🙏🙏👍👍👌👌 Can you make "glass prison" please?? 🙏🙏🙏💪💪💪
Dream theater-Dark Eternal night
Hello,
Yes, Mike Portnoy is one of the best progressive drummers ever, so cool guy, I did have chance to meet him for a few secs in France after a live show
I just can't imagine all riffs he created since Dream Theater's first album.
Not the most technical probably, but in my top 3 hugest drummers.
Tx man for your videos.
No he's not better than Estepario, but just look at their personal CVs
🤘🏻🤘🏻
Mike Mangini took Portnoy's place, but DT just brought Portnoy back, the band is back together
I've seen them live 11 times (4 with Mike Portnoy and the rest with Mike Mangini). They are both excellent drummers, but I prefer Mike Portnoy's charisma on stage. I saw him live with Neal Morse band last year in a small venue in Sweden - Wonderful event.
Alex Van Halen - Live Without a Net.
Illumination Theory
Welcome back to DT Mike Portnoy. Back home where you belong!!
Tama starclassic and Sabian
Not many drummers are as clean in everything as MIke Portnoy is. Hardest drumming is playing cover songs beat for beat. Portnoy does. And everything he has played with DT is original. My opinion as a former drummer. lol
Count of Tuscany.
Mike plays Tama drums and Sabian cymbals.
Pls react to DT's "The Count Of Tuscany". It's awesome an my absolutely favourite song
He is sitting so high, never get it how he manage to use his feet so good like that.
instrumedley. Try this on for size.
Start with Images And Words
Tama Drums, Sabian Cymbals....
TAMA and Sabian
Pull me under !
As others have said, DT is not the same without Portnoy. He did a dick move the way he left and then tried to come back, so I don't blame them for replacing him. But Mangini MAY be technically better, but he is not half the showman. But even worse is Portnoy was one of the main influencers of the bands direction and writer of the lyrics. And with each new album since he left, to me, they drift further away from the type of songs that made me love them. The songs before were musically and lyrically interesting. Now, they just seem to me that they are technical master pieces that are quickly forgotten.
Portnoy builds on a surpasses both carrey and neil, but the along comes mangini and it's game over lol
1. Neil Peart 2. Mike Portnoy 3. Simon Philips in this order for me
No question about it he is better than Mike M. or El whatever. Hands down
Lol is mike portnoy good. Hes a top 5 living drummer
From my angle, just for me- in this life- Portnoy is not a drummer, he is GOD FOR ME, apologise to all
Pulls a Charlie Zeleny going all over the place
Yes, Mike Mangini, I want your opinion. I think Mike P. is way better than MIke M. Fit the band better!!! Do a VS.
Do Dream Theater's "Sacrificed Sons" live with Portnoy's drum cam focus: ua-cam.com/video/7b6R4eaeuGY/v-deo.html
I haven't seen this video for a very long time and I've already started to forget how great Dream Theater was in their golden years with Mike Portnoy. It's very sad that he left the band and they had to replace the man with a soulless machine, Mike Mangini.
There is a video here on UA-cam that clearly shows why Portnoy was better than Mangini, it is called "Finally Free OUTRO - Mangini vs Portnoy". Portnoy plays his magnificent solo in the finale of the song, but when Mangini does it, he doesn't follow what was on the album, but plays his own solo, completely ridiculous, which breaks the logic, rhythm and flow of the song. He just doesn't feel the music at all.
Jason Rullo >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Portnoy
Portnoy is great but you lost me when you mispronounced, NEIL PEART!!! It's not PERT!!
Mike Mangini doesn't even compare to Mike Portnoy. There were better than Mangini. He is better than them all, disagree?
boring, MP's drum solo is not as conceptual as MM's, MP's really boring
Portnoy drum solo is not that good. His drumming is not dynamic
