- This is the greatest classic 911 we have ever driven. 1,000kg with a really intelligent suspension platform. Every day usable whilst at the same time hugely rewarding. Stable and predictable, it still competes with modern day cars on equal terms.
The Porsche 911 is an iconic car, one of the superstars of motoring history. There have been many variants over the years, we offer this humble 3.0 SC from 1982 as a car on which to judge all others.
The best driving 911 is the one you own.
That is a gorgeous little car , it’s been very tastefully done .
If I had the cash I’d buy that in a heartbeat .
I’d lose the roll cage and the racing harnesses , fit normal seatbelts and that would be my perfect weekend car

As discussed earlier in the comments I think you need the cage because of the lightweight panels and it does add to the handling without being intrusive to the interior. I would agree re: the seatbelts. I like normal belt as well although it does add a sense of occasion to the drive.

I very much enjoyed your thoughts and reactions to this well modified 911 Henry. Choosing & coordinating a set of modifications / details on a major build is like jumping into a comparatively little known world. Each build is unique and sorted to achieve its purpose to varying degrees. It seems to me that your reflective approach to sharing this car is accurately reflective of coming to understand how the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts.
Having worked with a trusted shop to develop a tailored and ‘involving driving engagement’ focused set of modifications to my 964 C2, I understand the care and iterative nature of development it takes to create a really satisfying build.
Your approach to this video stands out among the modification videos I’ve seen. Please consider taking more adventures down this path.

Really enjoyed the video. I bought a 1982 911 SC in June which had been restored by Porsche Cambridge in 2014 as part of a nationwide competition. Lucky enough to have a 991.2 gt3 which I love but is so fast for the road, the little SC has been a revelation to be honest, even the wife enjoys going out in it. This SC is very special though, looks like the perfect road going 911 sc to be honest.
It is interesting how so many people hark back to a previous era when you could more easily relate to your vehicle. The trick is finding something that still responds and deals with modern traffic on equal terms.

I had a 911 SC, bought new in 1981, kept it for 30 yrs. A beautiful iconic thing. I felt it needed more power, so I asked Russell Lewis to change the engine to a 3.2 Carrera and then rebuild it to 3.5 litres. It then produced 275 BHP, and it was quite a thing. A nice project, and I felt it was finally the car it should have been.
This car has gone down a different route, all be it a more involved route. They have left the engine largely unchanged but changed the rest of the car around it to improve power to weight and also the handling characteristics.
@@911virgin8 YES I SEE THAT. MUST BE GREAT FUN TO DRIVE. I ALSO HAVE AN AUDI R8 V8 manual gate, which is a wonderful car too, with an aftermarket exhaust, which is essential!
A wonderful with enough power for me.The 911 SC was a very good car in its day and still holds its own today.A detail which always is a highlight of the G model 911 is the bumpers front and rear,T Lapine just made it look so right.When you look at the mess the others did with rubber bumpers.

That wouldn’t surprise me. Having had a couple of dealings with other Porsche indies you guys would be top of my choices who I’d purchase my next car from! I recommend you to a friend who purchased a 997.1 from you a few months ago and he’s very happy with his car and indeed the way you looked after him👍🏻👏🏻

During the mid 90"s I was a French guy living & working in New-York, my first 911 was a 3.2 convertible and even if I was planning a long road trip with it (from NY to Montana via the back roads ,i decided to sell it and buy an earlier 1985 3.0 SC equipped with a few goodies for my trip ..the driving experience and pleasure on these roads was fantastic ,all that to say it was a time where you could still buy a used 911 low mileage for a friendly price..those times are over..!!
To be fair I think you can say that about most cars from the 1980's. Here in the UK even something like the humble Ford will set you back a decent chunk of cash. Long gone are the days of good sub £20k air cooled Porsches.
@@911virgin8You said it..!! exactly that price range of £20K in 1995 in NY , when you could 'switch' cars like I did..I believe that as soon as air-cooled 911 'restomoders' took on this car market the prices exploded..finding a 964 chassis today is impossible ,unless you call Singer ,they buy them all..bummer..!!

you told us that it has amazing suspension, but what suspension does it have that makes it so good?

Any specific details on the suspension, I have an 82sc lightly modded engine and plan to update as I go.... would love to know more about this set up.
What a fantastically sorted car. I have a '79 SC and absolutely love it, but some of these modifications are very very tempting. Don't suppose you're ever going to sell this one??
We actually sold it some time ago, and the chap had a bit of swap around in his collection so we sold it again !!
I suspect it's now going to remain in it's current home for a while but never say never.... It really was a peach of a drive, funny that certain cars stick out when you see so many.

Great video Henry, always had a soft spot for the SC as it was the first 911 I owned back in 2003, paid £10k for it, Guards red,how times have changed, and have had a few 911's since including a 996 GT2 which i sold to you guys, ironically back in an old air cooled 3.2c in Guards Red, gone full circle!, Ed Turner
Hi there Ed, thanks for taking the time to comment. It's funny how the Porsche itch keeps moving around. In an ideal world you'd have half a dozen spread across the different eras. This particular car is something really special to drive and was a joy to video.
Do you think composite doors and plexiglass windows could compromise the car’s practicality and/or safety if the main use is on the road and not on track? Thanks as always for the informative review. Really enjoyed it!
Had it not been for the roll cage I would agree with you. As it is i think the car provides quite a good safety cell
Another nice video & I can see why you like it. Just as an aside is it road legal with those headlamps? I'm not trying to catch you out it's a genuine question as I would like to convert the lights in my car but HID's without washers or non OEM LED's seem to be a MOT failure & I was told they are attracting attention from plod with corresponding fines now so keen to know the answer.
The biggest problem I come across is when headlight are not adjusted properly and they dazzle other motorists. I'm neither an MOT tester nor a motoring legal guru so couldn't tell you chapter & verse on the current laws. Certainly all factory Porsches with litronic lights had headlamp wash and self leveling.
I think the difference that you are sensing on how the car feels is probably 90% the result of a full roll cage (I can see a bar at the top of the windshield as well) and the beefy front strut tower brace, coupled with some net weight saving (change to composite body panels to offset the additional weight of a full cage).
A roll cage definitely changes things and focuses the handling as any torsional twist is generally eliminated to a greater extent. Ruff did that with the hidden roll cages on many of their cars, but in this case I think its a bit more than that.
Can you provide more detail on the wheel manufacturer please. I wasn't clear whether or not these where original Fuchs.
Hi there. They are genuine Fuchs alloys but different sizes from standard SC fitment. 7 inch on the front and 9 inch on the rears so essentially 930 Turbo size.
The 245 45 16 rear tyres are 930 Turbo size, the 205 45 16 front tyres are standard width (a lot of people fitting 7 inch fronts would tend to fit 225 tyres) but a lower profile. Standard size was 205 55 16
Is the suspension still torsion springs? Do you have any suspicions that the torsion springs are stiffer than stock?
Yes, still on torsion bars which I suspect are standard.

The performance of my 128,000 km ‘12 Mazda 3 five speed manual seems similar in numbers. Clearly it is not as rigid as this retro classic with all the extra bracing but the Mazda seems just as fun on the road. However, on the track my GT3 reigns supreme, full stop. Classics are nice but they are still classics.
Funnily enough we took a little MX5 in part exchange this week. To a lot of people the headline figures are all they concern themselves with. As a GT3 owner you will appreciate drive and handling actually have very little to do with the numbers.

Same power to weight approximately as a 2.7 RS so that would explain the lovely balance between weight and power !. I am sure the full cage must help rigidity but unfortunately whilst a full cage might add to to the driving experience in an accident your head is horribly exposed and that bar across your knees is lunacy.
There is a metal knee roll anyway in old 911s. The harness would stop you going forwards. I’m not a crash test expert but I do think it would give you a fighting chance. Don’t forget this is essentially race car protection and race cars regularly have big offs for a living.
The front bumper sticks out like a sore thumb as not being original. It gives the impression of being changed after an accident. I think it just lacks some black finishing at the base. That aside, lovely car.
The intention with this car was never to be totally original in aesthetic. It has been extensively modified with great skill and judgement. If someone wants a nut and bolt factory original car then this isn't the one for them, it's for someone who wants to understand what is possible from a driving perspective using an early classic 911 as the base. There has been no accident.
@@911virgin8 I understand and appreciate all points. Nevertheless, the bumper looks odd in my opinion and does not reflect the care and attention to detail elsewhere. An aesthetically pleasing will not hinder the drive, it will simply finish the car far better.
Very sorted 911. Sounds weird, but considering the work done engine rebuild etc., the quoted price looks good value especially when I covert to dollars and consider the nuttiness that is Bring A Trailer over here.
Prices are always very personal but yes, it would be easy to spend a lot more for a lot less.
@@911virgin8 US market is a little crazy, very few new cars available and used cars are very expensive which seems to spill over to the enthusiast cars. All made worse by some high interest rate loans on plain jane cars, feels a bit bubble like.
@@93455Driver The UK market is equally tight at the moment. Whilst I think some cars are trading over their natural levels most of the stuff we sell has genuine interest and a solid following behind it so values should hold moving forwards particularly with the older stuff where condition varies tremendously. A good example will always shine through.

The race harnesses wouldn't be my first choice but they are what they are. The roll cage definitely makes a different to the overall torsional rigidity of a car.
How the fuck is the Harness mounted, you are not supposed to have the lower belt on your ribcage... 😵😵💫

@@911virgin8 yes! Still having fun with my first ever Porsche, an outlawed -90 C4 you’d love to take for a passionate spin. The Taycan 4S serves me great Porsche passion on a daily basis (51000km and still rising sharply) and just got confirmation on my allocation for a May production GT4RS.
Only reason for selling 993 was it was the original owner wanting to buy it back. He even had the original invoice and had great memories of driving his girls to kindergarten for years in that car. Also it was his first ever new purchase 911, and the only car he’d regretted selling ever since. He was like a young man again tearing up when he saw the 993 again. It was a delight to be passenger when he punched through the gears heel and toeing round our wonderful country roads. Actually it was an honor to serve him the car back in great shape. Money suddenly became second to the experiences we shared.
