I really enjoyed this. I find myself realizing I've been keeping up with your car for longer than I realized. Time flies when your car is not for sale.
We've have ours 31+ years, first present from my date, later she married me, after 3 yrs restoring it, our wedding car. Timeless love object for us, as you say never to be sold. Funniest moment in it, crossing a ford, a sudden mist inside as we couldn't see eachother anymore, the airintake sucked all water. Safely reached otherside and won the rally, with wife as navigator! Great upload, thanks
Great video and story. The fact that you were looking for a specific car, and then kept it for five years once you got it, that’s special. I have also had my car for five years now, and I still feel very emotionally attached.
My white '80 Targa perhaps shared the same days of running through the factory, but where the coupes turned left in the assembly line, mine turned right. I'm the third owner and bought mine in 2007, so we've been through a bit more history. Longest single trip so far was 10,000 miles from NC out to Lake Tahoe, then back along a very northern route up into Maine before hooking back south to NC. No plans to ever sell mine either! :)
Thanks for the comment David, that's incredible! I love the thought of our two cars being built at the same time, and then sharing this connection through their respective owners, 42 years later. Mine was built in Sept. '79. Your trip sounds really incredible. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! 😁
I really enjoyed the story of your 5 year (+ counting) love affair with your SC! Great photography and well written...kudos! I had my '80 Silver Metallic Targa for 20+ years and >200k miles and also never thought that I would sell her but then I purchased a 2010 C4S and kept both cars for two years and realized I was not using the SC enough and well, these cars need to be properly exercised and I found myself reaching for the C4S keys while the SC became a garage queen. And then someone that had been chasing it for a number of years wanted it bad enough and made me an offer that I couldn't refuse. Having a daughter in medical school made that proposition easy to swallow so now the 997.2 4S 6MT is my love and well, equilibrium has been established and I have the perfect tool for 600 miles days travelling throughout the western US or a run up the Marin, Sonoma & Mendocino coasts. Keep up the great storytelling and if you are ever in the SF Bay Area, raise your hand. I'm also a photographer and would love to share the light and the sounds of our glorious Flat 6s!
Thanks so much for this comment and the kind words. The 997.2 is a fantastic car, and I'm envious that you're surrounded by some of the best roads and weather in the country! I will be in Monterey for Rennsport Reunion - if all goes to plan, with my 911 - so watch this space, it would be awesome to have a meetup with some like-minded Porsche friends! 👍
Just discovered your videos. I really enjoy them...very well done. I've owned my Wine red '81 SC Targa for just a few months now, but agree with everything you say about the 911's of that era. They are special...not really fast, but plenty quick enough to be enjoyable, and the analog feel and control feedback is something no modern car offers. I have even come to love the 915 transmission, because it demands precision and attention from the driver. I previously owned a 991 Carrera S, and as wonderful as it was, I like the SC more. I hope you enjoy many more years with The Machine.
thanks so much for your comment and well wishes! SC's are really special - you hit the nail on the head about the 915 transmission. I even like the CIS injection, it's a little unpredictable, but it can feel very responsive and urgent at times. Enjoy your SC, I hope summertime is good Targa weather where you live!
Nicely done! I’ve been pining for an SC ever since they were introduced so here’s hoping I can share in your ownership celebration for at least a few years at some point. Congrats!
thank you so much! Good luck with your car search, I don't pay a lot of attention to the market, but I think values are a little less silly than they were a year or two ago.
@@capturingthemachine I think you’re right and, for whatever reason, the SCs have always remained more affordable than small bumper and later 3.2 cars. The more research I do I find that SCs may be the perfect driver’s 911 in a number of additional ways. Lighter and simpler than the later cars, more rear grip than earlier cars and they have the robust aluminum 3.0 rather than the finickier magnesium 2.7. Everybody I’ve talked to says they’re the most bullet-proof of the early(ish) 911s too. I just got home after driving up the Cali/Oregon coast - it was brilliant! Good weather, light traffic but multiple times an hour I’d think to myself - “imagine THIS in an SC!”
@@bryandickerson5365 All good points! The CIS (injection & engine management on the SC) is more finicky and can be less reliable than the 3.2 Carrera, which had Motronic, and is simpler and more modern. But CIS also makes the SC feel, to me, more lively and revvy than the 3.2. I’ve wanted to do an ‘SC Buyer’s Guide’ video for a while, maybe this year. 😆 I did that drive in reverse in September, it was really special, but too short! I posted about it here: open.substack.com/pub/capturingthemachine/p/portland-to-monterey?r=1ojp5f&
@@capturingthemachine I guess I’m no one, cause I dug it! In fact I feel like you abbreviated it too much. Nice car! I had a '78 - the first year for the new SC - for 175,000 miles. Awesome car. Bullet proof as they say. I lived in CA and drove all those great roads. Every morning on the way to work on I-5 I took it up to 100 (provided no ChiPs about). The sound of the engine revving up with the air fan adding to the exhaust note is a beautiful noise unequaled in the world of cars. I drove it like a race car, double clutching and rev matching every downshift, some with heel-and-toeing when braking and downshifting simultaneously was called for. I always wore driving gloves for a good grip on the wheel which reacted to all road anomalies, and they reduced driving fatigue. I'm so jealous! haha
Really enjoyed the video. Was at Rennsport as well - in a friends 83 SC. The corkscrew doesn't look like much until you drive it:) Bought my own 81 SC the following year.
@@capturingthemachine No kidding - we did 2 laps... and I was filming the whole time... I think I was giggling when I realized that the track just disappeared like that. By the second lap we had a much better sense of it... but I still giggled. It was pretty amazing.

Love the coupe. I've got an '81 Targa, it's so much fun and I don't plan on selling it ever. And that shot of the car on the flatbed, been there... my trans got stuck in reverse gear ! Thanks so much, I'm so glad you found my videos! I bet you had a lot of cool experiences with those SCs, and I hope you're making new ones with the 991 (and taking photos of it!). You're absolutely right that these cars need to be driven. Thanks again for watching!
Cool video! I like the music you chose too. I also like the fact that you seemed to have done away with the "whale tail." That spoiler only looks right on the 930 Turbo, IMHO. Thank-you.
yes, thanks so much! I took off the tail, for me, it doesn't work without the widebody Turbo flares. The tail is in my office now, it's actually in the background of most of my other videos 😆
Great video. Just purchased my first 1981 911 SC Targa. Got the plates today dying to drive around town but as you’ve said in your video mine is stalling and may have an air leak issue and need to figure out how to fix. Do you work on your car or do you bring to a mechanic? Thanks for the video
Thanks, and congrats on your SC, that's awesome, hopefully you get it sorted soon! I don't work on mine, I have no mechanical abilities unfortunately. Unmetered air, such as an air leak like you mentioned, can definitely cause the CIS to run badly. I also had problems with the warm-up regulator, and there's something called a fuel head that commonly gets gummed up with old fuel and causes problems. I've also had issues with the Lambda ECU, which is a thing for 1980+ years. The main problems I had when initially sorting this car were that it would idle too low when cold, and if you adjusted it to idle normally, it would idle way too high once warmed up. That, plus some hot start issues, which CIS is susceptible to, related to the warm-up regulator I mentioned. A friend of mine is an SC CIS guru, if you are in need of some real expertise he might be able to set you straight: instagram.com/pablo_the_porsche/
Thank you for the video! I am on a search for an ‘80’s 911 SC. This is a car any enthusiast could do work on (brake jobs, oil, etc….). Question: do you have electrical issues with the SC? Thanks.
Not really too many electric issues, aside from electric window switches that go bad a lot. The CIS, which is the injection system on SCs, can be finicky and complicated, so I would read up on that. Some people who are of a more mechanical-minded bent than myself can just 'get it,' and have no issues they can't troubleshoot through.
To keep better track of your revs while minimizing eye travel from the road to the tach, turn your tach counterclockwise so that 6000 - 7000 is in the 12 o'clock position. No tools or disassembly needed: just grip the edge of the tach and turn. "Everybody" does this haha.
Really like that wide shot photo at 3:42 of the Porsche parked next to that valley view. Do you recall the focal length of it? Looks like iphone tele (50-ish mm equivalent)
thanks so much! It was iPhone XS and I just checked the metadata and it was actually the regular camera (26mm), here is the post: instagram.com/p/BoKJhwZhCH4/?
Love the video as I have a white 82 sc :) Is that a coco mat beneath your shift boot? I have coco mats in mine but I like the mat that beneath your shift boot. Did you purchase that from the coco site?
Hey Timothy, thanks so much, and yes that piece is from CocoMats! My car came without the lower center console, so it had holes in the carpet for where that mounts. I saw this center mat on the Cocomats site, not as a product, it was in a slideshow photo on the home page. Anyway, I inquired and they said they offer it as a 'custom center piece' for $75. This was a few years ago but hopefully they still offer it, just specify that, they were really nice to deal with!
thanks! On the 16" Fuchs I have the standard tire sizes: Front: 205/55-16 / Rear: 225/50-16 On the gold cookie cutters (can't remember if those appear in this video), it's 205/60-15 and 225/6-15.
It's Porsche's own pre-production 918 - you can read about it here, it was the trip of a lifetime! 😄www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a24222975/porsche-918-spyder-panamera-turbo-s-e-hybrid-adventure/
Lol, I don't remember what music I used in this one. When I made this, I was still using the free UA-cam Music Library, and kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel for goos tracks. Since then, I've switched to using Epidemic Sound, which is a lot less cheesy 👍
Great content, thanks! It's making my wallet hurt tho, I'm starting to think air cooled is for me. I've got a lovely 996.1, and no regrets about the purchase, but when the restoration is complete, I'm thinking SC. I can have 2 can't I?😅
I too had my 81 SC for many years, then out of the blue an offer was tendered; I now rock a 308 GT4 ,’ never say never.. A tasty proposition may indeed be round that next corner!
All good points. Now the bad. It’s very slow compared to modern vehicles, a mini van will out speed this car. The 915 transmission shifts are long and can’t be hurried. Parts are expensive, labor is expensive and if you need an engine rebuild - it’s as much as buying another 911. Granted it’s sensory experience is like nothing else, not selling mine either. 78sc
A refreshed 915 with a modern shifter makes things much better. My 78 has the European pistons with S cams and I would say that the mini van should remove all baby seat or won't stand a chance, just kidding. But in all seriousness there's only one other thing that can surpass the great feeling of a classic 911... oh hi honey didn't know you were there.
Absolutely magnificent cars to drive I own a 82 targa but I’m alway battling with the overheat my car overheats súper-quick specially on the summer can somebody tell me if this is normal because I took it so many times to the mechanic and he claims there is nothing to fix😒..

Thanks so much, I'm so glad you found my videos! I bet you had a lot of cool experiences with those SCs, and I hope you're making new ones with the 991 (and taking photos of it!). You're absolutely right that these cars need to be driven. Thanks again for watching!
Great video, love the car 😍😍😍 I have an 1987 3.2 Carrera and feel just the same
Thanks so much!
The tail is in my office now, it's actually in the background of most of my other videos 😆
this is one of my favorite cars
thanks for watching!
Martini stripes always make a motor look better 👌
thank you, I think so too!
Love the moment at 7:11 signing for the ticket 🤣
hahaha.. oddly, it was a front plate warning 😆
Interested to know what exhaust you are running? Stock collectors? Stock shifter?
Thanks!
Beautiful car!
Thanks! It's Dansk SSIs with an M&K Sport muffler, I made a video just about the exhaust: ua-cam.com/video/JA3G_IULv7o/v-deo.html
Beautiful bro!
thanks man!
@@capturingthemachine Many thanks.
To keep better track of your revs while minimizing eye travel from the road to the tach, turn your tach counterclockwise so that 6000 - 7000 is in the 12 o'clock position. No tools or disassembly needed: just grip the edge of the tach and turn. "Everybody" does this haha.
Nice, I sometimes see people do this, but never knew the actual reason, thanks for the explainer 👍
Congrats!
thanks Michael!
Nice 👌 Thank you for sharing. 👍😊👍 Cheers
Thank you! Cheers!
@@capturingthemachine THanks!
Love the video as I have a white 82 sc :)
Is that a coco mat beneath your shift boot? I have coco mats in mine but I like the mat that beneath your shift boot.
Did you purchase that from the coco site?
Hey Timothy, thanks so much, and yes that piece is from CocoMats! My car came without the lower center console, so it had holes in the carpet for where that mounts. I saw this center mat on the Cocomats site, not as a product, it was in a slideshow photo on the home page.
Anyway, I inquired and they said they offer it as a 'custom center piece' for $75. This was a few years ago but hopefully they still offer it, just specify that, they were really nice to deal with!
Will we see you at HCR '22?
hell yes!
Wait, what gen Forester appears at 8:05??
wow, good eye - that's the 9th gen which ran from 2012-2014 and also 2017
@@capturingthemachine ah yes, the rare transgenerational LCI
Great story. What steering wheel is that?
thanks! It's a Momo Prototipo
I have a chance at getting a 911sc targa manual 20k miles 1 owner. What’s it worth if sorted?
Sorry, I'm not the right guy to ask about values, but it sounds like a good find 👍
I have an 82SC in white. Ive's wned it since 1991. I have TRE service it
Wow, that's amazing! I hope to one day have as many years with my SC as you've had!
Just stumbled upon this video. Love it! What size tires are you running on this beast?
thanks! On the 16" Fuchs I have the standard tire sizes: Front: 205/55-16 / Rear: 225/50-16
On the gold cookie cutters (can't remember if those appear in this video), it's 205/60-15 and 225/6-15.
Do you keep a full spare in the front boot?
I keep the regular factory space saver spare. It lays flat under the carpet
Love it Kevin!
thanks so much Joachim!
Nice to see a 918 on a road trip
It's Porsche's own pre-production 918 - you can read about it here, it was the trip of a lifetime! 😄www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a24222975/porsche-918-spyder-panamera-turbo-s-e-hybrid-adventure/
@@capturingthemachine appreciate it, thank you.
Thankyou
You’re welcome 😊
Really nice video mate! Not sure why you do not have many more views and likes! You have mine anyway! 😎
Much appreciated!
Great one. But dude, what's up with the squirrelly music during the final video? :D
Lol, I don't remember what music I used in this one. When I made this, I was still using the free UA-cam Music Library, and kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel for goos tracks. Since then, I've switched to using Epidemic Sound, which is a lot less cheesy 👍
@@capturingthemachine Regardless! We still enjoy our vintage 911s, yes? That's the BIG benefit.
Nice car
thank you!
I think there's a lot to be said for a compelling rather than efficient ownership experience.
hahaha, absolutely 😄
Great content, thanks! It's making my wallet hurt tho, I'm starting to think air cooled is for me. I've got a lovely 996.1, and no regrets about the purchase, but when the restoration is complete, I'm thinking SC. I can have 2 can't I?😅
Two is the way to go! Thanks for your comment - I love a 996, especially during the summer months 😆🥵
I too had my 81 SC for many years, then out of the blue an offer was tendered; I now rock a 308 GT4 ,’ never say never.. A tasty proposition may indeed be round that next corner!
oh man that's awesome, the 308 GT4 is incredible! You're right, you never know 😄
Then again, I've heard so many Porsche owners say, "Damn; wish I had never sold my vintage Porsche"
😍😍😍❤️
🙌
Bag the Martini stripe kit! Yikes!
lol
Keep them! You like them and they’re part of the car’s story now. Joe Davis, Ph.D.🙄 can do whatever the hell he wants to his own car.
78sc
all true 🥲
Sorry to hear this - what does it do when it overheats - is it running different/smoking, or is it just the gauge saying it's too hot?
I had the same problem, changed the heat sender unit and it was fixed... I checked the temp with laser temp to make shure it was on point ✅️
very nice video. i love my 79 911sc. i bought it from a neighbor 3 years back i had been watching him own this car since 1985. Very fortunate to own it. Again nice video
thank you so much! That's a very cool story, it sounds like the car found a good owner 😄
You need to have a Ford Mustang GT500
maybe someday, I have driven one (2013) and it's pretty outrageous
Nice cookie cutters.
thank you!
Stay out of CA.
sounds like a threat
nice video
Thanks so much!
