    Pretty plain what he is doing and how. Don’t need dimensions because they don’t actually matter. Looks like a 5x5x5 structure with a roof.

      @nicholecrouch311 3 роки тому +6

      Exactly and since he didn't mention exact dimensions, one has the ability to make it as big or small as they want. I'm going to be using thicker plastic though 6 mil is not thick enough for the location I'm in I'll be using 10 mil or thicker. I like this idea best because I rent the property I live on and if I have to move it or something I can just take it back apart

    • @lifefixx
      @lifefixx  3 роки тому +10

      @@nicholecrouch311 I'm pretty sure I used 9m but I could be wrong. Either way. I no longer live at that address but, the structure is still up... and its about 3 blocks from the ocean where it gets quite windy and I never had a problem with it getting damaged. Perhaps the secret is it's not an airtight structure. air can still pass through it.... and using lots of staples lol

    What I really like about this video is that it is true DIY. You are working on the ground, using DIY grade tools, and this project is within reach of someone with hand tools. It really bothers me when you see a video labeled DIY....and they have a $10k shop with sponsored content. Very nice job.

    This was very clear. It was exactly what I was looking for; no fancy measurements, no fancy carpenter language. A couple things I would do differently: I would put some kind of plexiglass on the walls/top because it doesn't look heavy enough to resist New England weather. And also I want mine to last more than a year. I have some old windows in my basement and I think I'd put them around the bottom of the frame to give it some extra weight too. But that's just how I would tweak it. And the video is so clear that I could do it without a lot of hassle. Thanks!

      Good thoughts. We are in the Midwest and have similar issues - wind, cold. I appreciate this for the idea that you don't need much to start. I have seen a few people make really nice greenhouses out of old windows. Man, if I could find a bunch of old doors and windows (for cheap or free) I would be all in for that!

    This is great, thanks. It's good to see someone show something that is functional and cheap. This would be easy to modify if it needs to be bigger or smaller with added support beams on the sides. We have an local source of free pallets, so I am thinking of using them as a base. We get high winds here and I don't care what you spend it will eventually be beaten up. I appreciate this "on the cheap" version. More money to buy good seeds with!

    • @lifefixx
      @lifefixx  3 роки тому +1

      There are no hooks. I used thick plastic, and lots of staples. It's located a few blocks away from the ocean where it gets quite windy. Almost a year later, and the green house still stands. I think possibly part of the reason, is the 3 fold-up walls. They aren't air tight and allow air to blow through it.

    Would a teepee type structure be cheaper?

    • @lifefixx
      @lifefixx  3 роки тому

      Good question. I personally wouldn't enjoy a teepee. Pros and Cons would be: A teepee design would be difficult to build an easily accessable door. Also difficult to have the retracting walls for airflow. Also unless you build it huge, the narrowing of the top is going to greatly reduce the space for plants to grow. It might be a cheaper option, however, i dont believe its much cheaper. That shape might be more aerodynamic and wind resistant tho.

    Also the Polytarp clearly states keep out of sunlight on the label. What would that do to the plants?

    • @lifefixx
      @lifefixx  3 роки тому

      Yes. Polyethylene isn't supposed to be exposed to direct sunlight. What will happen over time is it will lose its malleability and become brittle due to the UV rays. It takes a while for this to happen though. There is specific greenhouse plastic you can buy that this will not happen with - however it's expensive. And as specified, this video is about how to make the 'cheapest' green house. If you would like to build a green house that will last and is more expensive, there are lots of videos on youtube that can direct you. Thanks for the comment :)

      Hey. Great questions. I originally had a voice over for this video which I failed to include. The poly / plastic sheething says "keep out of sunlight" that's why I showed the label in the video...... The reason is..... Any kind of construction poly like this doesn't do well in sunlight. Transparent, certain types of PVC ..... I can't explain why, I don't know exactly why.... but I know the UV rays from sunlight basically over time start to disintegrate the elasticity and integrity of the product...... The reason I used just a simple product like this, meanwhile showing it on camera..... is the house I am living in is getting torn down in a couple months ....... So the longevity of the green house walls wasn't a huge concern. I do believe I mentioned this in my video. But thanks so much for inquiring and asking :) ...... I am from Asian country. We get sunlight throughout the year. So this polytheen cover will burn the plants???

    • @lifefixx
      @lifefixx  3 роки тому

      It will not burn the plants.... but if you live in a very hot environment, the fold up walls are very beneficial. On hot days, I would open them up to get air flow and let the heat out.

    How did this hold up over the year?

    • @lifefixx
      @lifefixx  3 роки тому +1

      I originally built this at a property I was living that was going to get torn down a year later. I no longer live there, but to the best of my knowledge it is still up and fully functional. I didn't mention in the video that I attached the frame to stakes I drove far into the ground. Also, because my fold up walls allowed a lot of airflow, as well as the aerodynamic design.. I never had a problem with wind. I lived 5 blocks from the ocean where it got quite windy, but perhaps this design wouldn't work in a windier environment. Again this video was not exact blue prints for an indestructible green house. It was a general idea, for a cheap, functional green house. I wouldn't recommend it in areas prone to hurricanes and tornados.

    You could have built the rafters on the ground and had them sit on top of the walls with an overhang that way the water would runoff the roof and not down your walls.

The price varies. depending on where you live. Apparently where you live, cheap plastic and wood costs $100. Possibly. I live on the west coast where it rains a lot and is often very windy. She still stands. No issues. If you staple the plastic as tight as possible, there is nowhere for the rain to pool to cause the roof to collapse.
