- Thinking about the future of the trades lately after seeing some friends go through school and hearing stories of their experience and also discussing the structure with college instructors. Something to think about I guess

I got my electrical journeyman ticket back in the early 80's. Migrated south to the states, and they don't have any standard training for most trades. My friend of 40 + years, back in Alberta, has his gold and red seals, and forced his sons to also get the gold and red seals. Two of his sons are teachers, and get paid a bonus having the seals as well the their teaching degree. Third son is in the army and put this training to use.
Down here, no mandatory training, and the ASE is about the only certification I see, if you didn't work for a dealer. Very hard to find a great mechanic, and hit and miss on what type of training they have. With scan tools being several thousand dollars, and manuals all online and pay as you go, a small shop has a hard time getting and keeping good help. It's expensive to stay current, but of you don't you quality suffers as fixing the latest cars required more testing before fixing. (Unless your just a parts changer, and then your in the wrong profession, because you don't really understand how to isolate a bad part, you just go down a checklist of what could cause the problem and change until fixed.)
👍👍...the knack is the key I think...either ya have it or you don't...but, yup 👍, hand's on experience makes a wrencher more valuable ,and 2nd reading and studying .. down here in the US we have 1 and 2 year vocational schools.... I went to a 2 year and glad I did...in my case it was to b able to repair our family excavating and logging business' machine's and trucks...I don't always get to wrench everyday cause I'm driving driving truck or operating or laboring..but,I don't think I'd wanna b a wrench every single day🤣.. I need a variety..but anyway, right on feller, thanks for the video...have a good week👊
Thanks Elroy. I don’t blame ya for not wanting to wrench everyday 😆😆 I will have a great week, off to Vegas today for ConExpo!
Everyone wants a level 3 or above nowadays. No one wants to train a new apprentice. I've applied to a few shops and never heard back from any of those including dealerships . Wont even consider a level 2. Idk if its just slow or something else
I think it’s just a political thing they want the numbers to show they are stocked up with experienced journeymen.
I think every shop around right now is either steady or very busy it’s just a political game.
It is best if you can know someone or speak directly with the hiring person. Meeting face to face or speaking on the phone goes a long way.
Good luck buddy
Keep trying. It will happen. 35 year plus. Interprovincial red seal. Heavy and Automotive technician. 27 years in the Canadian Army. Consider going Military. Cheers.
There's a skill gap from the previous mechanics to modern mechanics regardless of ticket
lol the new guys like to do band aid fixes. As long as it runs they go with it.
When it comes to mechanical components or outside of the book troubleshooting I would say you are right. Modern electronics and machine communication diagnostics the old guys are behind. But that’s to be expected. Probably the biggest difference is the old boys work ethic compared to use young bucks. Some of the old guys in this business sure know how to work!
