Remember seeing Level 42 at Bristol Poly in early 80s. Despite being a dyed in the wool metalhead, Mark's bass playing blew me away. I'm sure he's responsible for my continuing interest in bass playing. Looking forward to the show!
For the A and G chords in the main riff, I could never play it fast enough, then I saw a video of Mark- actually from a concert I attended last year!, and I saw what he was doing. Since we're jumping from the E string to the D string, that takes precious time.. so I fret (and Mark) the A on the top string with my middle finger, and then sort of 'leave it there', and then fret the 4th fret D string with my index finger, and then hammer on to the 5th fret with my ring finger. I then repeat this finger for the G chord. This way, my finger jumping is way minimized.
I don't know how people are able to do this. The bass just looks so very difficult. I play classical piano but this bass stuff just blows me away. 'Hot Water' - one of my favourites. Lifetime L42 follower. You are an amazing exponent and teacher. You even look like MK sometimes...
I've been always fascinated by the way Mark King plays bass but never able to understand the techinque. Today finally I got a fantastic explanation and full comprehension of slapping and thumbling, watching your video all looks so easy to play. Awesome lesson.
Well I'm a long way from playing like Mark King (a long, long way) - but Mark (Smith) gives me hope that one day it may be possible, because he breaks it down and plays it slow, which gives me something I can practice now (as a relative beginner) and work on, practising technique and building up speed - so even if I can't play it completely right at least I can eventually learn to play something that sounds pretty good.
You was a UA-cam recommendation bcos I'm trying to play this bass line and was searching so I'm literally just blown away by your tutorial WHAT A FIND - superb for a bass head Mark King hard core fan from the 80s - I'll look in to what else you do but obviously from the 80s I love Pino and his work with Paul Young and Duran especially Girls on film (night version) such a vibe to play along to and Rio. Thanks a bunch you have no idea - will join your clubs for sure 🙂the other Mark King track I'm working on is Love Games ;-)
Thanks a lot. This is the 10th year of the TalkingBass channel so there are plenty of lessons to work through (nearly 600) on every bass topic you can imagine.
Fantastic!! Thank you for this!! BTW - could you PLEASE do a tutorial for Level 42’s “Coup d’etat” and/or “To Be With You Again”? As a “beginner” bassist, they’re impossible for me to figure out! Thanks.
Thanks Mark Smith 4 this lesson!!! I was so impressed that ordered Level 42 Vol. 1 book on Amazon. Mark I spotted that on 26:54 and 26:57 You don't played ghost note on 3-e-&-A as writen in your own sheet music. Anyway, Thanks a LOT!
I`ve been playing that bassline wrong since the 80`s. I`m going to go & rethink my life, & consider what else I`ve been doing wrong. This may take some time!😱
Thanks for this awesome lesson! Would you consider doing a tutorial on any of these other Level 42 songs? Are You Hearing What I Hear? My Independence Day Coup D'Etat
Believe it or not, Hot Water isn’t a hard one from that standpoint. The rhythm is really consistent. It’s the same thing with many Primus songs. The consistent 16th notes make for less need of independence. This would be much harder if the bass line had a bunch of rests. I’ve demonstrated this a bunch of times in the Live Hangs. Lovely Day by Bill Withers is a great example of a straightforward bass line and a simple vocal melody that becomes exponentially more tricky when doing both together. Technique is irrelevant, it’s the rhythmic counterpoint between lines that necessitates the independence.
@@talkingbasslessons Thank you, I just started the bass and I watch you a lot. It is harder to sing along than I thought but I keep practicing. Please keep teaching us.
All you bass players in Europe should check out the Harley Benton PB 20 SBK. It's really nice for $118 U.S. I just lowered the saddles and put flat wounds on it and it's really smooth. Basswood body and a Purple heart neck. It surprised me.
How many years of practicing Bass do you have to successfully complete, before you can even think about practising stuff like that? Asking for a friend
Great lesson, Mark King is indeed the Ace of the Bass!

Same as. Used to keep my love of Level 42 a bit quiet among my fellow metal fans :D
A major influence in my musical life and the reason why I play the bass. The fantastic Mr. Mark King.

This has given me a new appreciation for Mark
You can pretty much make a video for each of the songs off True Colours, it's such a fantastic album.
Saw Level 42 way back in the day supported by a very good band, 'Sticky Stuff', Amazing, exciting, mind blowing gig. Fan for life!

Secret: it's not that hard. It's like rolling cords really fast or playing in octaves on a piano. Sounds super awesome, not exactly rocket science.

Kickass bassline, sounds awesome
"The Pursuit of Accidents" and "Almost There" would be great! 👍😊
Yeah I’ll be doing Almost There soon. Be sure to check out all the others I’ve done here in the channel.
THIS SOUNDS GREAT
Thank you
Nice job Mark
SUPER LESSON👍 What model of this bass guitar is it?
Amazing
Can you please make a tutorial for Sandstorm too?
Thanks for this awesome lesson! Would you consider doing a tutorial on any of these other Level 42 songs?
Are You Hearing What I Hear?
My Independence Day
Coup D'Etat
The name suits the skill.... Mark 'King' of Bass
Frantic Disembowelment to Level 42 - you don't get many teachers like this - class
Sounds like classical music to my ears
MARK KING PROTECT HIS RIGHT FINGERS. HE PUTS SOME TAPE ON IT.
Actually without being picky it's his thumb that has tape over it due to Mark's slap action.
What's the difference between the flavour and the vibe?
Flavour is the taste and the stinky rinky dinky. Vibe is the feel and the boogaloo how d’ya do.
What about Easy with Nik Kerhaw?

Leave out the advert mate.
@@johnhewett9483 I just bought this, spent my money and thought I'd share. I'm in Arizona, this company is in Germany I think.
@@bobc.5698 I thought you were maybe a sales rep using this platform to advertise the guitar.
Bit irrelevant to level 42 aka mark king playing 43.

Depends on quantity and quality of practice. I was playing stuff like this after a couple of years.
Yeah ,but there you are copying it 30 something years later. MEH .
At least he has moved forward from the Bach video he also uploaded.
