Lots of on-line bass courses try to sell you on shortcuts. Mark doesn’t do that. His courses are geared to make you the best bassist you can be. This particular free course is seminal. There is an incredible amount of information packed into it. I’ve spent quite a bit of time working on the suggested exercises and for me it has taken me up a level. For a free course, there an amazing amount of solid, useful information given away. Thanks Mark. Talking Bass paid courses are just as good.
I've found Mark's tutorials after two months of playing, and his exercises are just next level, I'm incorporating them in my 10-15 minute practices I do throughout the day. I love that he also gets into the notes and theory so I can also learn my theory at the same time
and just like that the lightbulb 💡goes on!! I can fingerstyle, slap, double pluck, double thumb, strum, play with a pick but never quite understood why my playing doesn’t sound as musical as it should, but just a cacophony of flailing notes and ghost notes - more acrobatics than music. Now I get it - to string the scales together and land on the root and tonic arpeggio. I’m the proud owner of many of your courses including the course on scales. This one video is the gorilla glue that just put it all together for me! Thank you so much, Mark!
Fantastic lesson. I like the emphasis on shifting on different strings. Although I immediately learnt the pentatonic shapes starting from the root note first and then applying the intervals: a bit like having a vector pointing to the other notes. This way if I know where my root notes are in the chord progression, I can play the pentatonic scale over two octaves both going up and down the neck no matter in what position I’m in. Took me a few hours of practice but now I’m confidently hitting the pentatonic notes in both major and minor scales without forgetting where the roots are. Now I’m practicing the intervals of the arpeggios in the different shapes but that’s pretty easy.
The pentatonic scale is popular because it's versatile, easy to Learn and sounds good in most musical settings, from blue's and rock to country and pop.
In the root position exercises, the tab for bIII doesn't match with what is played. What is played is more consistent with the rest so I suppose that is the right one.
Hey Mark, quick question. In the section where you define where the chord tones in each scale/inversion, why not include the Bb in there? Any negatives for doing so?
When you did : Tip - 2 Finding the Roots explaination that was the clearest way to hear the notes of the scales. Just want you to know your explaination was successful..
