  • Here's how to change and test a coil pack and leads on a Chrysler Ypsilon 1.2 petrol.
In the UK these are a rare car and were only sold badged as a Chrysler here and in Japan. They are know elsewhere as the Lancia Ypsilon. The 1242cc engine (And in fact the whole car!) is the same as the Fiat 500 and Panda so this procedure is identical for the Fiat and Lancia counterparts that are fitted with the 1242cc petrol engine.
This car was misfiring and the Engine Management light was on. The spark plugs had recently been changed and the car had been running fine with the new plugs so I suspected the coil pack had failed. Had the plugs not been changed this would have been the first thing to replace and test.
The diagnostic showed a misfire on cylinder 4 and upon testing the resistance of the coil pack it looked OK! The HT lead for cylinder 4 however looked different from the rest so I tested and replaced that which has cured the misfire!
If you do this job and you have old plugs it is probably worth replacing them while the airbox is off. This is an easy job and you should be able to do it at home with basic tools.
List of tools and parts used:
If you don't have a socket set then a budget one including a 10mm socket and with various sockets and allen/hex bits can be bought here:

If you need to replace the spark plugs a set of 4 to fit the Chrysler Ypsilon 1.2 can be bought here: ( Along with the other parts these should also fit the Fiat 1.2 but please check they are right for your car before buying )

icarsoft CR MAX - this is an amazing tools and if you fix many cars I recommend investing in one! However if you only do the odd job now and again you can get much cheaper tools that can clear faults. The icarsoft tools can be bought here:

A budget OBD diagnostic tool that should be able to clear fault codes can be bought here:

This is how I did the job, I am a just a car enthusiast and have basic tools. The video is meant as a guide for entertainment purposes only. If it helps someone that's fantastic but if in any doubt then always consult a professional mechanic before undertaking a project yourself.
