Then he’s made no big deal about it whenever he’s been interviewed, instead he speaks of everyone else’s efforts. I hate to be the one always saying this but JB is referred to as the greatest for the same reason Yellowstone is the “greatest” TV show. People who are in no way associated or familiar with western culture ( housewives and wannabes) want to feel “cowboy”. The PBR lost its place in western culture a long time ago. JB is good but he’s only qualified for the NFR once, never won a NFR round let alone a NFR championship. TY Murray who was one of the founders of the PBR ( which the board also ran off) is the probably the greatest of all time in rough stock, the guy has 7 all around world championships. Stetson Wright after this years NFR will have 8, by the time he’s 30 he will hold that crown as well as Trevor Braziles crown as the highest earning cowboy.

As someone who has grown up in rodeo as a barrel racer, none of our events are the safest as it's only a matter of when not if. When I was a child, way back in the 70's, we were at a local rodeo in Blue Ridge, TX and I witnessed a bronc rider die by being thrown into the bucking shoots and the bronc landed on his chest and it was over. Back in the day, they did not wear helmets or Kevlar so the wrecks were brutal. I was in an almost life-ending T-bone accident while on my horse warming up at a barrel race in North Texas. The woman's horse did not stop coming down the alley and the gate guy did not have the gate closed even though it was supposed to be closed on each and every runner. Rodeo is not for the faint of heart. I know Billy and Hollie Etbauer and Billy is soo incredibly stoved up from decades of bronc riding.

I grew up on a 150 acre thoroughbred breeding/broodmare farm. Horses are in my blood. Started riding w/ my Dad as an infant lol. Naturally I went into the horse business. I know track horses are a little different but really a 1500/2000lb horse hurts the same way coming down anyway you slice it. I used to buy the track horses at auction, put them under saddle for a month or two then flip them for profit. This one horse I got dirt cheap, he was gelded, marked as unridable unless in the gate just all around bad. Took him home worked on his ground manners, he spent many hours in the round pen. He started to improve, he looked for me when I called him from the barn. He was standing to be groomed and saddled etc. I decided it was good for me to get on him. A guy named Butch who would hang out at the barn (he had a few horses boarded there too he never rode tho lol) was there that afternoon, THANK GOD. This horse stood like a angel at the mounting block, stood while I was on his back. Even walked around the indoor a few times totally relaxed, neck loose nose down. Then it happened - we turned the corner, I shortened the reins, gently squeezed with my legs and gave the verbal cue “TROT.” That mfer exploded and I mean he exploded. I have a good seat, definitely takes a lot to throw me and I stuck on this horse for what seemed like forever. Nothing was stopping him. I decided to ditch my stirrups and was just going to slide off. Bad idea. When I started to slide I guess he felt me turned to the same side all while bucking. He ended up on top of me. His left hind left shoe caught the collar of my jacket and was stuck. I went flying. I hit the dirt three times before I blacked out. I woke up against the wall knew blood was pouring out of my nose and that guy Butch was running towards me screaming to not move as he was on the phone with 911. They show up and ended up life flighting me downtown to a trauma 1 our cities shock trauma unit. I actually got really lucky and only ended up w/ a fractured orbital bone, broken nose and 8n a neck brace for 7wks. Horses/Broncs/rodeo, track life/bulls/cows/roping NONE of it is for the faint of heart! It is dangerous and you gotta have a certain kind of spirit to live this life. This was 12yrs ago and I still do the same thing. 🤣 I also have tremendous respect & love for rodeo ppl from bull riding to the barrel racers!

Probably the 2nd most dangerous pro sport (a distant 2nd to bull riding) is pro cycling; if you measure by fatalities and broken bones. In the 1st week of the Tour de France you will see many broken bones and lost skin from crashes. There have been several deaths both in competition and training over the last few years. Sports like F1 use to be dangerous but are very safe now.

    • @regularape

@@LVQ-so5th TT Isle of Man motorcycle race is more dangerous than both the sports you listed, since its inception there's an average of 2 fatalities every year. In 2005, 9 riders died.
