  • What is happening to life on earth? What are the pressures affecting biological diversity globally, and what can be done to stop its decline?
A new short animated film by PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency brings you to the year 2050 and shows you the future is not fixed: choices we as society make today will determine what the world will look like in decades time.
In 2010, at the 10th Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya, Japan, a vision for 2050 was formulated: to stop the decline of biodiversity and ensure its sustainable and equitable use. Based on state-of-the-art research this film paints a picture of how this vision could be achieved.
This animation is based on previous reports of PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, including ‘Roads from Rio+20’, ‘Rethinking Global Biodiversity Strategies’ and ‘How sectors can contribute to sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity’.

    Imagine there's no heaven
    It's easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us, only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Livin' for today
    Ah
    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion, too
    Imagine all the people
    Livin' life in peace
    You
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world
    You
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

So this person made a video in 2015 saying that "we have technology that decreased the land for farming" seems very acceptable, but then you try to be a chicken with no space...

What a bizarre little video. While I agree that "our future is not fixed" we have zero chance of dealing effectively with biodiversity loss without addressing humanity's still-exploding population. The UN projections for population in 2050 now stand at 9.7 billion (there are approximately 7 and a half billion of us now and our numbers are increasing by about 230,000 per day). It doesn't matter much what technologies we move to, or if we collectively decide to eat less meat (actually, global meat consumption is skyrocketing- by 2025 humanity is projected to consume 7 TIMES as much meat as it it did in 1961) if human numbers continue to grow. More of "us" will continue to mean less of just about "everyone else" regardless of the fantasies conjured by the good people at PBL Netherlands EAA. Why are they unwilling to acknowledge this very basic fact?

Malthusianism is a failed ideological approach, and produces no reasonably actionable policy short of genocide.

its 2020 and sorry burst the 2015 bubble but yeah things aren't looking that pretty, tbh we probably are reaching that decline faster rather than 2050 as said.

👉Caring for nature is also to stop eating meat and dairy NOW so as not to continue supporting the livestock business, which is the main responsible for fires and the deforestation of native ecosystems.
In 2020 in Argentina cattle ranching devastated half of the provinces with fire and for years they have been dismantling the north, every time we buy a steak or a carton of milk we pay them to continue destroying biodiversity.
