- The Yamaha V-Star 250 is also known as the Virago 250 or more commonly the xv250. Mine is a 2009, but this bike has not changed its design since the 80's. It's the first time I did a brake job on anything, so I am as green as they come. There is no other video on changing the brake pads on a v-star 250, but lots on larger v-stars. So I binged on those before attempting the feat shown in this video.
Update: at the end of the vid I wasn't sure if I installed the brakepads correctly, well apparently I did. After riding around for over 100kms, the brakes worked flawlessly. The initial rubbing of new brakepads on rotors is normal, and went away after the pads adapted to the rotors. Also, I torqued the bolts that attach the caliper to the fork to ~25-30ft-lbs; and the retaining bolts (the ones that attach the caliper housing to the arm thingie) to 17-20ft-lbs.
¡Niceeeeeeeeee! If you repair any part of the byke, do a video, people like me is very thanksfully for your job doing this videos, thank you!
I think I would have removed the cap on the brake fluid reservoir, this would release the pressure that you're feeling while trying to push in the piston. Naturally, you have to keep on eye on the level so that it doesn't spill. Also, it may be a good time to completely flush the brake fluid and put in new DOT 4 fluid. Anyway, THANK YOU for the video.
Great video! The friction you got in the front wheel is normal for a brake pad change. I would add that compressing the pistons in the caliper pushes fluid back into the lines and up to the reservoir on the master cylinder. Before pushing in the pistons it's a good idea to check the level to ensure there's enough room for the returning fluid.
I noticed that the brakes fluid level was up all the way to the top after. That would explain it. Thanks for the tip :-)
Thanks for the advice. The brakes worker fantastic after. I sold that bike by the way. Ride a Suzuki C50 now :-)
Well done Hai, you did it good. Can I ask where you got the engine guards?
The engine guard, aka crash bars, came with the bike when I bought it ftom the previous owner. So I have no idea where they got it ftom.
@4:09 when you pushed the bolts back into the caliper - does it screw at front of aluminum caliper facing outward or into that black brace where the rubber boot is? I’m stuck right there - I got the two bolts onto the fork but I can’t tighten those to freaking bolts- any ideas help anyone???
@@JimmieGonzalez-r7b it's been 4 years I can't remember exactly, but the video seems to show that I pushed the bolt in, toward the back brace with the rubber boots. So what happened to the bolts that go into the fork, you said you can't tighten them?
@@HaiVu no its not the bolts going into the forks its the bottom two that screw into the front of the caliper that silp through to the boot and onto the black brace - the threads are at the top end of the bolt meaning near the head of the bolt - I have tried to use a clamp to secure it maybe I need to take off and re-examine it all again - stumped
Thanks wii do mine tomorrow
great job!
I have the same masterctaft ratchet
Can you get ABS brakes in this bike?
Highly unlikely as it is an inexpensive, simple beginner's bike.
what brake pads did you buy?
I can't really remember, but I got an after market set from a local dealer.
@@HaiVu ok no problem, Thanks.
