I totally agree Don. I have collected seven PENS over the years, from the E-P1 to the PEN F, all by watching for bargains on eBay and local auction sites. I always have one in my pocket and share others with nieces and nephews when they come to visit. It is amazing how even the biggest and newest Olympus lenses work flawlessly with this old bodies.

Got the Pen E-P5 today that will be the primary everyday camera body while the second is the E-PL2. It is a micro43 back to me after owned in the past the first Pen and the Pana GF2. I think my choice is perfect for street photography. Thanks for your super cool reviews.

Hello again. I have a few Pen models and have used the 2 E PL 1s often but recently pulled out my E P 3 which I am currently using. I have an E PL 2 and an E PL 8. I quite like them tho I don't use all or really many of the available functions. Using the E P 3, which was a #900. camera new, gives me a feeling of quality that I paid around $100. or so dollars for. My original intent was to sell most. I bought some because they came with a lens I wanted but as ou said, thhey are no longer repairable so I will keep them until no longer useable. Since am 85 they will most likely serve me as as loong as I can use a camera.. I bought my wife a Pen Lite E PL 5. I am not a screen fan and have evfs that fit the various models. I enjoy your videos.

I spent a few months in Italy and brought my OM 5 mark III with the 15-45 pro lens and an EP7 as backup with the kit pancake lens. The OM5 ended up staying in the bag and I took all the pics with the pen, and totally happy about it.

If you want a PEN E-PL10, you can get them right now in Black or Brown. Used Photo Pro, a Olympus OM System USA Dealer sells them as refurbished with a two year warrantee. $349,on e-bay. That is cheaper than most of the used E-PL7 and up models listed. I bought one and everything was in the box and as fresh as new. It takes great pictures, but I really don't like the user interface. They removed the My Set feature from the E-PL10, not happy about that. For that reason, I use my Panasonic GF-5 more often that the E-PL10. I like to just load one of my custom settings and start shooting. I also do not like the flimsy battery door on the E-PL10. My Panasonic feels like a more solid camera. Anyway, nice video Don.

As I have probably mentioned before, the EP-1 was my first MFT camera I still have it and the shutter count is still relatively low at 5600. I have an EPL-8 which is one of my favourites in view of the flip/tilt screen and the ability to attach an EVF ( neither the EPL9 or EPL10 can attach an EVF). I recently purchased an EPL1 purely for fun….with a shutter count of 809! . Having installed the latest firmware I can attach my VF3 electronic viewfinder to make it usable in bright sunlight.
As you say the image quality from this series of Olympus cameras is very good especially when using top quality auto focus lenses and manual legacy lenses. My favourites at the moment are Minolta MD 28mm & 50 mm with adaptor.

Hmm, the EPL1 with an electronic viewfinder, sounds like a neat combo. I guess I should buy a VF3 or 4 to play with. Those Minolta MD lenses are really great. My first 35mm SLR was a Minolta SR1 with a 58mm f1.4 lens. It took great pics. Thanks for watching!

Great video! I have recently fallen in love with the Pen Mini series, added a gorgeous white E-PM1 and a black E-PM2 to my arsenal. They are even smaller and a blaze to use with the control dial on the back. Perfect with the small Olympus primes. I do prefer adding a viewfinder though, with the VF4 you get a big bright view, even bigger than EM-5 mk3.

The EPL10 pictured on the OMD website is Olympus branded. I don't know why it's even on the site, because as you point out, it does not appear to be for sale. They are selling other Olympus branded bodies however, like the E-M10. Maybe there will be an OMD E-M10. Who knows, maybe there will be an OMD EPL10, or an OMD Pen-F. I've owned several digital Pens, including the first one and the Pen-F. Nice little cameras. I agree, you can get away with a lot more with a small camera, because nobody notices it. I also own a Ricoh GR, a camera that virtually disappears when you pull it out. I think people think it's either a toy or some kind of weird phone.

EP 7 is basically an OM D E 5 mk 2 without a prism from what I have heard. I own a Pen f but would get a EP 5 if not quite so $$$. They have gone up in price, though less than the “7”. Heard there is a successor to the OM 1 on the horizon. An “F2” Pen would be nice. A cross between the TG 7 and Pen f? Keep up the good work, excellent images.

I currently have an OM-1 and it is a great camera. However, I miss my ePL5. It just couldn’t handle the heat and humidity here in Vietnam, perhaps because of the density of the electronics and lack of airflow for cooling. It started to fade a few years ago, and eventually would stop after about 20 shots, that is the only reason I moved on to a bigger and current model. I just loved the size, handling, and the image quality I was able to get out of that camera. And, as you point out, it was very inobtrusive.

I love your informative videos...I have owned most of the pen cameras...starting with the original E-p1 and E-pl...I just recently dumped my last GX9 because I prefer my pair of E-pl8 bodies and my E P3 (built like a tank.)... I like this combo because of reliability......same battery...Cheap price etc...and the e-pl8 is smaller than the GX9...Check out the E pl8...or 9...I dislike the Pen F for a couple of reasons (I have owned it 3 times and sold it)...I do not like side flip screens (however my EOSRP is also side flip...go figure)...back to the PenF ...the battery is different...the on off switch is on left side...(Now days I mostly do street...at 70 yrs young)...I am an expat retired USCG officer living in Bangkok....But If they changed those minor things in a mark II I would most likely buy one. Cheers

I've been searching for a compact camera with IBIS and dials/custom buttons for quick control. This of course led me to the E-P5 and I bought one from KEH, but unfortunately both dials are skipping, the rear dial register maybe 1 out of 15 clicks, the front ~1 out of 5. I knew this was a potential problem from reading forum posts prior to getting the camera. I am returning it but now I'm in a bit of a dilemma if I should just buy another E-P5 and hope the dial problem isn't actually all that common or move on to a different camera body.
I really like the E-P5 it feels solid in the hand (albeit a bit small, if I get another I'll probably try out a hotshoe thumb grip or make something custom to go over the small grip on the camera body). The IBIS is great, the features and ability to quickly change settings is incredible in such a small package, and like you've said people don't pay attention to this camera at all despite it creating really solid images, it's definitely a serious performer. I'm in LOVE with the touch shutter something I've never had on a camera before, and the AF is so fast! But those dials not functioning really gets frustrating when I bought the camera partly for more control than a typical compact.
It's a hard decision as I'm not locked into any camera system at the moment other than my Pentax K-70 which is fantastic for what it does but I need something a bit smaller, lighter, something that garners less attention . So far I've looked further into the LUMIX GX8 as well as the GX85 I like these both but they do have compromises as do all cameras, and now I've been looking into the Sony a6400 and a6500 both of which look great but those Sony lenses really are huge and expensive which starts to get away from my original goal (though I like some of the video features and the autofocus, at least based on my reading/watching reviews)
Anyway long-winded essay aside I would love to hear your opinion on any of your experiences with dial issues on the E-P5 or any knowledge on how many cameras it actually affects. Or any other opinions on compact cameras in general, any advice would be appreciated thanks!

    • @dongummphotography
      @dongummphotography  Рік тому

I'm sorry you had issues with the dials I can only guess that it is a sign the camera may have had some moisture get in. My EP5 was very low shutter count when I got it and I have used it a LOT with no issues. I do keep it in a case and since it isn't weather sealed, I am careful to not get it out in the rain. My EM5 MkII goes out under those conditions. If you find one that is working properly then I would think you would be fine. The EP5 is one of my favorite cameras. I hope you find one that works out for you. I also would not turn down a good deal on an EP7. Turns out they skipped the number 6 because the word for 6 in Japanese sounds like the word for nothingness.

The E-P6 is the Pen F.
I love the first bodies, but I chose the E-P3 for the extra speed, no lag, a much better LCD, and the dealbreaker for me, the wonderfully versatile supplemental EVF. I’ve been shooting for nigh on 50 years now, too late for me to adjust to shooting off of a screen I can barely see what’s going on with in anything but the narrowest parameters of light, not enjoyable or engaging to me in any way.

If I were you, I would definitely pick up the E-P3 instead of the E-P2. A much bigger jump than from E-P1 to E-P2, which was only done to introduce the EVF. You’ll notice not only the jump in performance, but even (especially) if you choose not to purchase or use the EVF, you’ll certainly appreciate the improved quality/clarity of the LCD….. just sayin’….. P.S. - The rotating EVF is a great substitute (better in my estimation) for the flip out screens these early models lack 👁️

I bought an E-P7 from Japan on eBay, from MapCamera. The service was flawless. I bought an OM-5 as well, and later a lens from them.
They and several other ~98+% 5-star rated higher volume Japanese camera sellers on eBay are very trustworthy. Shipping is usually very fast via Fedex or DHL (to America). It is easy. I've expeienced no delay with customs clearance, ever. Most of the cameras and lenses are duty-free to the US. All used ones are duty-free.
Expect pristine Japanese quality of packaging and customer interactions. Plus very detailed descriptions of camera or lens condition for several factors. I also have bought from 97.5% rated companies (all problem-free), if I saw the comments in the customer feedback indicated quality and dedication.

Don, nice video but I need to correct you on the E-PL10 - it is still the same 16mb sensor as the E-PL9 and 8. Only the PEN-F and E-P7 have a 20mp sensor. I have an E-P2, E-P3, E-P5 and E-PL9. The E-P5 is my favorite because I can use the VF-4 EVF, which for me is necessary at times. I also have several OM-D bodies and an OM-1, which is just amazing.
Looking into the future, I believe OMDS will change all of their cameras to weather-proof and "adventure ready" build quality. If so, then they must make decisions about what to do with the TG, PEN, and E-M10 cameras. I think they will have a weatherproof OM-10 at an entry level price. That will be hard, but they really need a true entry level camera body with an EVF. I see the TG gaining an MFT sensor (still with a fixed lens) replacing the PEN E-P and E-PL cameras, so the E-P7 would be the last of the true PENs. They might have a PEN-F replacement as a prestige vintage-look MFT body because - well - because they are just so cool and could give Fuji some competition in that market segment. TIme will tell. Thanks.

Great Video Don! As usual. You make me want to buy a Pen camera. I just do it as a hobby like you, but I do tend to be a collector of things. The oldest Olympus I have right now is an E-M5. I was going to sell it, but then I went out and took some pictures with it and was surprised. I ended up having one of them blown up to a 16x20 so I could hang it on my wall. Is that wrong? Hanging your own work on your wall? My other Olympus is the greatest camera Olympus ever made, in my opinion, before they sold the company. And that’s the E-M1 Mark III. Also I have the 12-45 Pro lens for it. It’s hard to go wrong with that combination. I can take it out in the rain or do whatever, and it takes wonderful pictures. About that number 4 thing that you always say about them skipping that number with the Pen cameras. Are you sure that’s true? Because my Fujifilm X-T4 was made in Japan, and they obviously weren’t worried about it sounding like X-T death, or being bad luck. Also Sony is made in Japan, and it doesn’t bother them, as they have an A7 IV. Just a thought. Changing the subject now.
Somewhere you said something about playing lead guitar, and I was going to comment on that, but I can’t find the video where you said it to save my life. I used to play lead guitar in some rock and roll bands when I was younger, and before I had this cracked spine among other things. (Motorcycle wreck) I love those pics that you show in your intro. Those are fantastic!!! Especially the Cardinal and the Wasp. But they are ALL great. I wish I could post a pic on here but I don’t see how I can. So I left a link to a short guitar video that I did about 12 years ago. It’s not much. Anyway, keep up the good work and thanks for another great video!

Thank you for all your kind words. Nothing wrong with displaying your own work in your home. Most photographers do. Olympus has been know to not only skip the number 4 in model numbers but 6 as well. A viewer from Japan said that the number 6 in Japanese sounds very similar to "nothingness" so it is often not used.
I don't think I ever said I played lead guitar but I do play the guitar and ukulele. I also build guitars and ukuleles. I am not very good at improvising leads though. I will give your video a watch for sure. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thanks. I’m sorry, I thought it was you. I guess somebody else said it, about the lead guitar. Oh well. Stop trying to be frugal and spend some money. Treat yourself to a 3 year old high end camera. Those are becoming affordable now. I would never buy a brand new camera. I still have the camera that started all this, 5 or 6 months ago. A Fujifilm X-T1. I’ve learned a lot since then. About taking pictures AND about buying used cameras and lenses. I always say, well if I buy this camera, then I’ll sell such and such camera. Haven’t sold ANYTHING yet! I did trade a 10 year old Nikon bridge camera away for a Vox guitar amp that I wanted. But that wasn’t a real camera anyway. 😂 I bought that before I started buying real cameras, and was glad to get rid of it. 😂 Hobbies are great aren’t they…and meant to be indulged. Maybe I’ll sell the X-T1 and get some more lenses : )
