    I am astonished that people would turn off the video if it is mft. PEN F is an incredible stills camera and one that I would love to have. Beautifully crafted, great sensor, everything that you need for streets. It's just perfect. Also more beautiful than any other retro design.

    The Olympus color profile customization is not limited to the Pen F. You have the same customization options in Olympus photo management software (their RAW processor), OM Workstation. There, you can create any profile you want and install these profiles on most of the newer models. So you don’t have to spend Pen F money to get this, you can buy an E-M5III or r something for a fraction and get the same - without the physical control dials for the profiles on the camera body.

      True, and yet, what you can only do in the Pen-F is build your own recipy just going out and shooting on Jpeg, if you want. The camera has 4 custom mode that are dedicated to each single camera mode for a total of 16, with B&W spesrste from Colour (4+4 custom modes) so you are not running short of any of those.
      The firmware released in 2020 substantially changed what the camera can do, and corrected most of the drawbacks that were highlighted in the reviews of 2016.
      Jpeg+Raw also allows for post processing in case if need, but I'm mostly keeping what I shoot in camera because I like what I see, unless something goes terribly wrong and I need to salvage a particular image.

    The Olympus Ep7 is the spiritual successor to the Olympus pen F. It has an updated autofocus contrast detect system that makes it a lot more usable with the same colour editing system however it removes the external adjustment toggles/dial in favour of in camera menu contrl for the same features.

    I love the Pen-F. But you haven't been able to buy them new for 5+ years, and even then, they had to be shipped direct from Japan for a few years prior to that. I bought mine "grey market" from Japan, 5-7yrs ago (or thereabouts). But I love it. But as others have stated in the comments, "The Olympus color profile customization is not limited to the Pen," as its available on ALL Olympus models. Its just a matter of how you get there via the menus or external buttons.

    Trying to adapt to the X100VI right now and, frankly, I find the OLY system much easier to manage. My Pen-F is my “go-to” right after the OM1. I plan to give the X100VI a longer workout, but wouldn’t be surprised if it goes and the Pen-F stays. Despite the 20 mp difference.

    I have both a Fuji XT and an Olympus Pen-F. I like both, but the color/monochrome customization is soooooo much better on the Pen-F -- you use color wheels and saturation curves (graphic interface) instead of text menu choices on Fuji. Like Mac OS compared to MS-DOS. I have great Kodachrome and Ektachrome simulations (the films I learned on) on the Pen-F. The Pen-F comes with the greatest Tri-X simulation already built-in... but of course you can fine tune to your liking.

    I totally agree on this review. Then again I am switching slowly totally to the m43 cameras, the files it produces are really organic and real and not hyper-clear like many others are, especially full frame like my Nikons, the m43 is a great system that really needs to be promoted more and dedicated to small portable cameras...

  • @sdrtcacgnrjrc
    @sdrtcacgnrjrc 6 місяців тому +25

    Oi! Stay away from m43! I want to keep being able to buy my used m43 cameras at affordable prices :-)
    Saying that they've gone up in price a lot like all the rest. I find it a bit comical that you even feel like you have to apologise for recommending an m43 camera. It is unfortunate that a system is stalling so much simply due to fashion ... I know there's cons to sensor size, but there's also so many pros: IBIS in relatively tiny bodies; lens sizes - I often shoot at 200mm FF equivalent and can do this with a camera & lens that I can fit in a jacket pocket. In my peak design 3 litre sling I can fit two cameras and four lenses ...

    I have an EM1 MKII and an EM5 MKII. For B&W out of the camera photography, they are unsurpassed. The EM1 MKII has the highlight and shadow control and then the mid tones which can be applied to any of its B&W presets or to monochrome output. Since everyone is trying to mimic film these days using a digital camera, I find the excuses made for not using MFT cameras a joke. MFT above iso 800 has a noise pattern and texture that closely mimics that of conventional film grain. I also shoot film in all formats including 4X5 and 5X7 and have a few Leica M cameras both film and digital and Nikon. Olympus EM1 MkiI produces the closest rendition to film, both colour and B&W. You can get its files to almost look like Portra with little effort in post. This is not something that I could say about the others, even Leica which takes a little more work.

      I am so glad seeing people that actually understand this, instead of bullying each other over sensor size, brand or autofocus algorithms.
      In the end, we all know what we are looking for in our photos and if you can achieve it with spending less money, there is little to no reason to spend more.
      I loved the E-M1 ii so much, buying an OM1 actually felt like a downgrade in some ways, although it is objectively a better camera.
      It just doesn't invoke the same kind of emotion in me, the M1 ii is really a special machine for a very reasonable price and it can do more than the majority of people could ever even capitalize on.

      I agree, and to be perfectly honest, I truly love to take myold 16 MP EM5 MKii on city walk abouts with me. It has the full grip, so it kind of just fits in my right hand without any effort. My concentration is then on photography and adjusting the tone cotrols on go without taking the camera off my eye to get the photo I want. Can they do that with all these fuji and Sony stuff? I think we have to give it to their marketing depts. they have done a great job of convincing people that photography is about 60MP sensor and two dozen focus modes and 2000 focus piints and iso 64000. I once replied to a guy who was so bent on telling everyone that with 60 MP you could really crop in, that all I saw him produce with his new camera was the same crap as before, but now 60 MP of it. Obviously he didn't appreciate my candour.@@oachkatzl8098

    I used to have a Fujifilm camera for a year, and I expected miracles from the JPEGs, but to my disappointment, there were no miracles. For decent photos 90% of the time post processing is required. Now, I am a happy owner of Panasonic S9, which was advertised with a LUT button as its key feature. I've spent a hell lot of time to learn and upload dozens of LUTs into the camera and adjusting them, but eventually I simply gave up: chasing the perfect in-camera JPEG is impossible, and just a waste of time. I take picturs with a profile which is the closest to the real world, and apply nifty, fantastic, gorgeous, cool-looking, astonishing, jaw-dropping profiles in Lightroom. No in camera image can come even close to the flexibility and performance of tools like Nic Collection 7 or similar packages.

    I have a PenF and I have Fuji cameras. I wouldn't say the PenF is better than the Fuji JPEG, but almost on par. I think Fuji edges it simply for using a better sensor. I find the PenF goes more after Kodak films while Fuji goes more after Fujifilm's (for obvious reasons). That said, Fuji has incorporated some kodak-esque aspects and unlike the PenF< The Fuji JPEG engine can simulate GRAIN which the PenF can only do for B&W.
    Not that the OM Systems Olympus E-P7 has the same controls of the PEnF for JPEG simulations, and actually they cleaned up the UI nicely - it's actually better in usability. I do still consider for very hard to quantify reasons the PenF output itself a notch higher better than the EP7's. Maybe the PenF used a slightly "picked higher quality" sensor from the bin.

    The issues that led to me parting ways with it though, are important to consider- Native lens options are pretty slim, at least when it comes to autofocus. Most of those native lenses are huge, making the small size of the camera itself totally pointless. The autofocus is basically useless, compared to great in the later Fuji cameras. Finally, the EVF is an expensive and clunky add-on... Having the option to go small and withut the EVF is nice, but when you want to use it, it massively changes the size and handling of the camera.
    Minor footnote, but the battery life was abysmal and charging speeds also not great. At least the batteries are tiny and cheap?

    The Sigma FP has nothing in its design and specifications to recommend it. It is too expensive, too slow and installing the accessories to make it more user friendly it becomes as big as a Pentax 6x7.

    This trend with x100iv...... Its very diferent cameras, yes more or less all mirrorless cameras picture quality as good as x100iv especially looking on small screens, x100iv is just special set of features which no other camera has and that's it. And other cameras not comparable because they will not have same features.. They can make pictures that be as good but nobody cares about that.

    My most expensive camera (Sony A7) is actually the worst if it comes to jpeg. My Fuji X100 (original) I like best. Been to a museum (Terug in de Tijd/ Back in time) where they o.a. had an original Olympus PEN (film).

    I have a question about the SIGMA fp. I am looking at options for an external SSD to use with the SIGMA fp I've recently purchased. In your December 12 blog article (your initial review of this camera), you recommend using the Crucial X9 Pro, but this is not listed among the compatible SSD's at the SIGMA website. Have you been successfully using the Crucial X9 Pro with the SIGMA fp?

    • @LukeTaylorPhotography
      @LukeTaylorPhotography  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi! Yes, I have been using the Crucial X9 with my FP, and to my knowledge, it is fully functional. I used it yesterday to record some All-i 4k UHD footage with the FP.
      I don't shoot in RAW (just not my style), so I can't speak to the compatibility with the RAW format, but from my experience, I have no reason to believe it wouldn't work. The SSD is very fast and it has the read/write speeds necessary for RAW.

      @@LukeTaylorPhotography Excellent! Good to hear. Online research has led me to the conclusion that the Crucial SSD's are especially good and I am glad you can confirm that they work with SIGMA cameras. Thank you.

    I think it's good that you don't want to spend a lot of money on certain Fuji fetish cameras,
    but also, the Ricoh GR are not exactly cheap cameras. In addition, both camerasm Ricoh GR and Fuji X100 have fixed lenses and a hidden sensor and a questionable seal, so if the sensor gets dirty you should take it to a technical service and many users have reported this problem. For me it is essential that a camera can eventually show me its little thing, the sensor.

    • @LukeTaylorPhotography
      @LukeTaylorPhotography  6 місяців тому

      That's fair. I picked up the Ricoh a few years ago, when the used prices were around $600. It definitely isn't as big of a value today. All cameras are getting pricey.

  • @notorioushsg1

    Better?? really. I don't think so. I suspect you are going for clicks. I had the Olympus OMG-EM1. Loved it. 20 film simulations on the VI means you pick one as your base and you are 80% to your look. You can tweak slighly for the 20% for your style/taste. Built in ND filter/leaf shutter with better flash speed sync. Huge community to find new looks. 40 Mega jixels... broski.. you b trippin.

  • @danwichgames
    @danwichgames 6 місяців тому

    That is not really how Fujifilm custom settings work. Yes you can use the film sims as a base to start from but you can customize every element of them as well as the cameras controls. If you just want a baseline sim to start from provia is basically neutral or close enough that it makes no functional difference. but still i really do not get the appeal of going thru the same effort of honing the jpeg before hand than being locked into one or two options instead of just shooting raw and putting in as much or as little effort after the fact. Unless u are in a situation where the client is going to take the memory card at the end of a shoot, why lock yourself into a limited set of jpeg looks when u have the raw to go back to if u end up hating the baked in look after? Maybe it is because i came in to photography in the shift from film to digital and had equal experience of developing both in the dark room and on the computer that they feel the work flow is just pare for the course. Digital development feels like half the art of it to me, but i guess i can respect those who can really commit to a look ahead of time. I just know i can't be one of them.

      It depends on what you are shooting. Mft has unparalleled reach for wildlife, exceptional macro capabilities, and how about portability? If you don't need a global shutter and super shallow dof, I don't see why you would ditch mft. That being said, if I had the cash to spare, I would love an X T4 or Nikon ZF being a sucker for retro look and ex Nikon shooter.
