"In my own words?" -- Meryl Streep as Karen Silkwood

  • "....Streep ... [as Karen Silkwood has] the kind of fierce, cranky individualism that is at the root of all social unrest and human progress...." -- Andrew Sarris, the Village Voice.
    Karen Silkwood was a real-life whistle-blower at a Kerr McGee nuclear plant whose car was run off the road before she testified and provided key documents incriminating the plant. Streep starts with the spirit of an Oklahoma worker-by-day and rides the tension all the way.

    Such a great movie! Oddly enough the real Karen looked so much like Cher. Who was awesome also in this.

      Good observation! I wouldn't want to do without Meryl's great, inspired performance as Karen, but Cher was becoming an actress who could fill the role with her own interpretation!

      I'm from Oklahoma-- and don't recall hearing that much about it growing up-- If the local media deliberately suppressed some of the story at the time, I wouldn't be surprised. If nothing else, from fear-- oil was so powerful in Oklahoma in the 70's

    Its Thursday Nov 17th 2022 I am rewriting this after having some thoughts. Actress #MerylStreep did a good Job Playing Karen #Silkwood in the 1983 film However,I do believe that the real Karen Silkwood was involved with intermingling with Protesters which brought in the Authority figures to investigate Possible illegal Wrong doing The real Silkwood did upset that management who was acting against the Interest of the Company Yet,She She felt a moral Obligation to report Defective Rods etc to the AEC along with a Concern she had that the Company was using Young Persons to work in the facilities She said so at a union meeting which was taped She took that Risk and it cost the real Silkwood her life along with her Colleagues later in Life due to Cancer. I don't know if the local Feds have any information more than What I Speculate what may have Occur. I have known people in the Past And learned from them #Silkwood #Fan Dave from MN

    Yes, Meryl Streep is excellent. In fact the entire cast is superb. The only problem with this movie is that americium is a trans-uranium element that can only be produced in a nuclear reactor. So Karen could not have been contaminated with it.

    • @DavidGibson154
      @DavidGibson154  2 роки тому +3

      I don't think Dolly meant to set her up-- Dolly probably talked too much, let it out that Karen was going to provide documents to a New York Times reporter-- which, the movie implies, got Karen killed. But I think Cher shows us, Dolly loved Karen--
