This is my favorite version of Grimlock. Price on this one dropped considerably after they re-released it with less paint apps. (The one with red and white box, with no clear plastic)

Well I think G1 Grimlock and movie Optimus Prime would have gotten along just fine. Grimlock: Why you no bash his brains out? You weak? Cardboard box one, with the styling of the current AoE stuff and beyond is a reissue. They say that the plastic on the reissue version isn't nearly as good as the original Hasbro one...which is said to have plastic that ain't as good as the original Takara MP08 one. Go fig. :/
Oof. Glad I got rid of him and went for the Takara one. I had leg issues with the reissue. ...although for some reason this Takara one's leg likes to pop off a lot...
Great informative review. I too like the blue eyes and especially loved how when you demonstrated the light up feature the blue eyes are so bright they even seemed to glow in the dark. I was lucky enough to find this in TRS about four years ago and have yet to open it. However after seeing how amazing he is I might just finally open him up.
I got the TRU version and the box was kinda dented in too, to the point I had to give it a hard shake to see if something was loose or was box swapped. If you have the WST thrust, it Grimlock can hold it in his mouth no problem, if you want to recreate the season 2 intro
I picked up the Takara version of MP Grimlock a few years ago; it was and still is the best TF purchase I ever made. BTW iGear was the company that came out with that 3rd party crown (It also came with an Energon "Beer Stein" and a tiny Thrust in jet mode to recreate Grimlock's chomping on him in the 2nd season opening sequence)
After watching this video I'm sick to my stomach. I'm so jealous of people who have this. Beautiful figure. I wish I picked it up back in the day. I hope they re-release him.
Glad you got one of these. I lucked out with MP Grimlock. I didn't even know he was released in TRU back then, and so to my surprise one day when I went to TRU, I saw four on the shelf, and picked one up. Probably my favorite Masterpiece figure I own, and I too prefer the G1 toy styled deco on Hasbro MP Grimlock over the Takara cartoon one.
I got him when he was $150 at Toys R Us in Australia. Very happy with him. And yes, Grimlock should be taller. Watch War of the Dinobots, and you'll see that Optimus come to the bottom of Grimlock's chest.

I'm getting this soon and I can't wait. I am too young for g1, but the g1 movie is one of my favorite films of all time (animated or not). It looks so cool and is easier to find than hot rod. Plus it's a frekin trex
I would consider masterpiece Grimlock probably my holy grail. Just because he's so expensive and I want it so bad. I did order Masterpiece soundwave from Toys "R" Us this morning. Can't wait for that to come in...and my metroplex :)
Grimlock sometimes fights Prime. Grimlock has a respect for Prime. He doesn't go with out right mutiny except when Megatron used his persuasive abilities like a pro.
The first time i saw this guy in Toys R Us i was so exited about it. I almost didn't buy it because i though it was like $100 (since Toys R Us likes to sell there stuff much more expensive than usual) until my brother and sister point me to the price that was like $30. I bought it right there and im extremely happy to own one. I only wish that Takara/Hasbro would do the rest of the Dinobots to go with this guy, I mean is nice we got Grimlock but it feels kinda empty without the rest.
Aha, I wish I knew you that far back, the Toys'R'Us in Kendal here had LOADS of them because it was out in the sticks, and fans didn't want to travel out to get it.
You missed his second head gimmick in dino form if you push him down so his hips moves up slightly in dino form then his head moves up and down, problem is that gimmick is kinda weak plus it doesn't work that well but i do remember seeing it in the instructions.
I have both the Takara and Hasbro version, I keep my Takara version as a Autobot and turned my Hasbro version into a Decepticon by using the red eyes and slapping a Decepticon sticker and some others to make Grimlock more badass.
you must be happy at the new slue of dinobot figures scheduled for 2014 from all the different third party companies. Swoop Snarl and Slag and looks like Giagapower is gonna try and do the whole set
Got mine from the secondary market at around $180 here in the Philippines. The original owner had him strictly as a display piece in robot mode for 3 years. Robot mode has a little bit of shelf wear but dino mode looks pristine. Weapons and crown still in the box. I love this Masterpiece figure. Worth the hefty price tag even if it is now double the original price. It helps to have a nostalgic attachment to the character.
funny you mentioned usps right off the bat, I saw my postal guy just throw a box onto a porch earlier today. and these are the guys that handle my transformers just before they get to me??????
The reason why no one could ever find this guy in store was simple...at least to me, it seemed that about 80 cases of him were sent to the Toy R Us by my moms house, he shelf warmed there for a while... :P
Congratz on getting this guy. I would pay 300 for a transformer but already have a Masterpiece Grayskull on pre-order plus I hate the gimmicks and dont like that the chest doesnt lock there will always be another Grimlock..

Cost me over £100 to buy the TRU one since he was so hard to find. Excellent figure, but it would be nice if retailers would stop only focusing on the movie lines
nice review, im glad you are happy with your purchase, but i think you shouldn`t have sold your botcon set. I believe $340 for the hasbro version of mp grimlock is waaaaaaaaay too much. And you shouldn`t have sold your takara mp 08 grimlock. The takara version is what i think more superior than the hasbro version because it came with more accessories and now a days its more than double the price. Plus in my personal opinion, i never liked the g1 sticker paint aps on the hasbro version.
The Post Office has very poor parcel handling practices. Most of the larger parcels are sorted by hand and tossed, literally tossed, into steel bins and cages for transport. Sometimes the mail handlers will hit the edge of the cage/bin and the parcel will have exterior damage. Sometimes they miss altogether and the parcel lands on the floor, the more serious the hit the likelier the further and harder the parcel was thrown. Even parcels marked "fragile" are treated in much the same manner.

Grimlock would totally destroy the indominus Rex 1. He is incredibly strong in both modes he has, which would make him totally dismember the indominus Rex. 2. Although the indominus would be smarter, grimlock would have more experience in an actual fight. Good question tho
all reviews i saw of this version of grimlock failed to mention that the crown is from the comics and came from the extremely expensive mp 8x king grimlock.
Why do you have to remind me of my fail. I could of gotten two MP grimlock from TRU's but I chose to get one only...Now I can't open mine up to play or proudly display him with my other MP collections. Now MP Grimlock goes for as much as 300+..

No this is not the same figure that his link takes you to. That one is the original Takara version. The MP Grimlock in this review is the Toys-R-Us exclusive put out by Hasbro a few years back. Around 2008 I think. The red and white on his legs are painted, not stickers. To my knowledge none of the Masterpiece transformers use stickers. The TRU MP-08 Grimlock that is out in stores now, is a re-release by Hasbro and has different packaging. The packaging on the new one is misleading, you cannot see the actual figure inside, as the package is not clear, and the photos on the outside of the package are actually of this older figure featured in this video. The actual figure inside does *NOT* have the same paint apps as the old one. The new one is missing the red and white, as well as other apps from his toes, thighs, and hips. Your best bet at finding this guy is on ebay. He appears to be going for around $200 US. Compared to $80 for the new one. One option is to take the new one and paint the extra apps on yourself, if you have a steady hand. I did it, and it turned out great.

Because figure is the same. Just the cardboard box was marketed for Asia. While the plastic box masterpiece was Marketed for USa.

I bought this about 3 years ago. I LOVE it! I rarely ever transform him or take him out of the box, so he's in close to mint condition.

There is also a head nodding gimmick for dinosaur mode. You just compress the hips downward and he'll nod his head.

an amazing mp swoop can be made from a classics silverbolt & some guy made a fantastic mp slag

Thtas supposed to be a flame thrower, not a sword holder, but i guess you Think of Animated Grimlock that might with a few customisations can do that

try positioning the legs in a chichen leg style it might help with its balance problem and look more accurate to a real T-rex
