The second output of this solo Irish project.
Following the debut two years ago, this atmospheric blackened act delivers a compelling new offering with “Black Sands”. Atlantic, the brainchild of a singularly talented musician, continues to push the boundaries of atmospheric black metal on this second demo.
While the core of Atlantic's sound remains firmly rooted in atmospheric black metal, “Black Sands” showcases an impressive array of musical influences. The album incorporates transitions using post-black metal, ambient soundscapes, and even sparse elements of hard rock. These diverse influences are woven together with exceptional skill, creating a rich sonic tapestry.
One of the standout features of “Black Sands” is the vocal work. The vocals alternate between hauntingly beautiful clean singing and harsh, distorted growls. This contrast not only adds depth to the music but also highlights the emotional range of the project as well as providing a stark and complementary counterpoint to the more aggressive elements of the record.
Despite the softer moments and the inclusion of non-traditional elements, the aggression remains a central focus of the album. However, compared to the usual black metal aesthetics, this aggression is somewhat tempered, allowing for a broader emotional palette. The result is a sound that is both powerful and nuanced, maintaining the intensity of black metal while exploring new sonic territories.
These transitions between different musical styles are handled with finesse, allowing for frequent changes in pace that keep the listener engaged. These shifts not only enhance the overall listening experience but also tie into the thematic elements of the project’s name, mirroring the oceanic imagery, creating a cohesive and immersive experience.
Once again this artist shows that black metal is not only angst but also finesse blending diverse influences on an atmospheric blackened shell.
