My husband and I just bought our first house and we have a lot of yard/weeds/uneven terrain in the back. So this video was so helpful! Unfortunately it looks like home depot discontinued it & you can't buy straight from company website. Do you have something similar you'd recommend? Thanks!
I don't have this make, I've a craftsman high wheel trimmer work great around the farm, I've retrofitted a 12 in saw blade an extra head for willows in the horse and sheep pasture, will cut a willow clump or a three in tree
When we moved here there was one of these that didn’t work in the garage. It’s been sitting for 4 years but it’s solid metal zero plastic so it’s probably pretty old. $55 to fix it yesterday and can’t wait to try it. I have 3 acres of brush.
Looks good, thanks for the review. Its a lot easier to edge with this type of unit and cut embankments and small fields a couple of times a year, I have a new DR Trimmer Mower that I bought this spring that works great on lawn trimming, heavy field growth. It also can take a chainsaw toothed blade that will cut saplings to 3 inches and all brush smaller. I think Powermate and DR are cousins, both under Generac. Both provide US jobs in Wisconsin and Vermont. I pass the current DR headquarters daily and knew Dick Raymond the founder.
I just bought one of this exact model a few hours ago, Assembly was quick and easy I will not get a chance to use it until 6/03/20 when I return to our new property 6.27 Acres in meadows of Dan Virginia and I am praying this machine gets the job done 6/07/20 while it preformed great with thin vines and pilled in pricker bushes & mulched them, didn't do so good on the amount of plastic string used on a small area Moving on to a Bob Cat 🐱 with a Brush Hog attachment, since it's coming to this I may as well start another small business doing brush clearing.
Hey Terrell - I have one of these and put clothline cable on mine. Replaced the back guard with a steel one in case the wire broke and shot back towards my feet. Man - this works great. Just copy the plastic line and install.
the string is not on a spool like with a weed eater. It has 3 hooks and you loop the string around the hook. I has 3 hooks so you end up with 6 strings ripping the grass. The 6.5 hp motor makes this unit top-heavy and turns over on even slight inclines.
These are great it's how all whipper snippers should be. it's very simple to change the trimming line anyone can do it. Yes they are top heavy but just means you have hold on to it and pay attention to what your doing and it won't tip over if you tip it over maybe you shouldn't be operating 1. It doesn't matter what machine you have there is always room for improvements but simple is the best and that's what they are. And by having a 4 stroke motor they are easy to start unlike most 2 stroke whipper snippers . I'm pretty sure we have all had a time when we have pulled to many times to start and pulled a muscle.
I had no idea these string trimmers were that powerful! What you tackled at 6:12 is about the same coverage and slope I need to deal with, so I will definitely be doing some research into this!
I love mine. It's a different brand, but it goes places a landmower can't, and you don't have to worry about stuff like protruding bedrock. For large areas, it cuts way more evenly than a weedwacker, too. I can't say enough good things about these gizmos.
Good to know! I've got at least 4 acres of neglected, abandoned forclosure weed and grass to get under control, but scared to use a mower because of rocks and stones buried I don't know about.
@@CriaAndKiddFW That's similar to my situation. I had some really uneven places to mow, too. Just imagine not having to worry about dulling or breaking another blade ever again. The .155 gauge string may wear down but it's easily replaced. These machines are so handy for places a regular lawnmower can't do. I use mine at least every other weekend and love it.
Wish you got commission from home depot lol. Picked it up yesterday. Using on very rocky mountainside terrain. This is the right tool for the job. Love HDs military discount. It's like tax free everyday. Excellent review🤙🏽
You can buy the same thing at harbor freight. The engine is a robyn design now manufactured by Kerchler tool company. the company is located in the US and Canada their they make a lot of tools under contract. Some of their brands are predator, duralast, kobalt, strong ways, kreg , and Irwin.
I used to have one of these but it was a different brand. Won't mention the name, but it is the brand that I believe came up with the idea. But it blew grass, weeds, sticks, you name it, all over me. This one really manages those clippings well. Dang, you forgot to show us how to adjust that head lol.
Absolutely love this review. I'm needing/wanting something like this. Live out in the country where the grass and weeds look almost as bad as the thick vegetation you were cutting so easily. Will definitely help out
@ToolReviewZone What is the brand of Engine on the machine cause that does truly make a difference & does it have a plastic carburetor cause If so it's junk to me.
DR Trimmer mower has had the swivel, large cut, electric start, ergonomics and all of that since before year 2000. After all, they ae the pioneer of these things. I prefer an engine that stays running with the trimmer allowing me to engage and disengage the head as needed.
DRAGON STEEL I agree with you the ENGINE on my VERSION of this MACHINE has the same handle on it but you RELEASE it & the CUTTING HUB stops turning the ENGINE runs PLUS my CRAFTSMAN has a FAST & SLOW SPEED on it you can adjust how you want the ENGINE to run
My Murray Trimmer mower also has a adjustable power stopped Trimmer from running and engaged back to normal , but shutting down going up and down steep grade hills is not good . It says on my manual for the Murray Trimmer mower no steep hills . It shows how much grade hills is drawing in the manual . I love the DR. Rechargeable batteries Power propelled back wheel Drive Trimmer mower I wish I could afford it $ 2000 dollars 7.6 hrp engine
I've read that the self propelled DR model has to be dragged backwards. The wheels won't roll backwards because of the drive system. The user said this was a real pain around fence posts etc where you push the machine in a foot or so then pull it back and roll it in again on a new path and so on. I do a lot off that type of cutting with my Tazz walk behind. It's pretty light and rolls easily forward and backward.
Very nicely done !! I'm in need of a hip replacement and I was using an electric weed eater with my walker in our front yard and it was so frustrating to trim a few feet stop move a few steps and start again. I have a regular mower but it's not working right now😫😫but I can walk behind it. I think this would be strong enough that I could keep my balance with it aa well. I'm going to squint a little when I go check on the price.😍😀😎lol Thanks for another great review video, Rodney
Just come across this video, im a commercial gardener and these walk behind strimmers are powerful but sluggish, i prefer my cobra kawasaki engined strimmer, plenty of power and does a quicker job with the better maneuverability
I have a husqvarna string mower, so far I've put out 1 side window and 1 rear window on 2 separate vehicles, not only that but I've replace d the mower ball $40 and a carrier plate $100. All within 2.5 years. Good for ball fields or over grown stuff but make sure all vehicles are parked away from the area your mowing. Them strings can sling a gravel rock pretty damn fast, would probably kill someone under the wrong circumstances
Shit.. I can’t get my husband to weeded.. I knew there had to be an easier way!! I’m buying this for me since I can’t hold the dang weed eater!! Thank you for sharing!
I have a vacation Home in West Virginia and I have several wet areas that I have to mow. I am unable to use the riding mower because it will just sink and get stuck. So, I have to use a push mower or handheld weedeater instead in those areas. The problem with the push mower is the weeds and grass are always wet and I spend more time unclogging the grass build up under the deck than I do actually mowing. I wanted to see if you thought this machine would handle wet area mowing well.
I have the husqvarna version of this, anit works the same. On a smooth lawn it needs only to be pushed. If the lawn is really bumpy it doesn't glide so easy, you will need to guide it over the bumps.
How would this do mowing on a steeper hillside? Our house is built in to a hill with the flat front yard and dropping down towards the back. I need to get between the two A/C units too. The side yards don't have to be pretty, just shortened so the snakes stay in the forest.
Now y'all need to add on the MTD push lawnmower bagger attachment.& Self-propelled unit in the back running of A double pulley off the engine crankshaft is all next.
Is this still your recommended trimmer today? I'm older and have strength issues in my shoulders, and a woman. I've watched other videos of people using walk behind trimmers on fields with ruts and humps and they have a real hard time and take a lot of energy to get through it. Is this one easier to get through areas like this? I'm not able to try and return a lot of machines to test them, so please give me your honest opinion and it will be very valuable to me. I love your filming of these things. Just the facts and straight to the point. Thanks for that.
Hi Norrie! I've had a couple different types of these trimmers, and this is still my favorite. The larger wheels definitely help get through the rough stuff, and it's easy to start. That said, there is another trimmer that I did a review on called (powermate multi function wheeled string trimmer) it's a bit lighter and really fun to use. You may want to check that out as well
I mow woods and small trees with a push mower I bought for $32.00 at an estate sale . Mulcher bagger with no bag on it but no side chute blowing out either
You know that looks very useful four Fields what you don't know what's in there before you put a lawn mower in there cuz if you go into certain field you'll be turn up blades it seems very useful for that service you take care of the family and cheers with a beer
The DR is better because the engine do not stop when you release the handle just the string stops and it starts with just one pull. And it is also self-propelled if you get a different model plus you can get the chainsaw accessory that goes on in place of the string trimmer.
Just wondering where to put the oil🤣🤣. It's sounds like it means business. Worked great on the overgrown weeds and grass. I never heard it bogg down even in that jungle looking grass. If you own a good amount of property this is your tool. Very nice test and review video. Super Beast💪. One question I have is how did the swivel head hold up being pushed all over the ground?
so far so good with ST100... did the job just fine for the machine... good line life & surprisingly good on gas considering the size of the tank...a bit more power would be nice but let the machine do the work & worth the$$$ so far....🙃
Tool Review Zone. I also have a Cub Cadet ST100 that I purchased two years ago to mow some of the problem areas on my property. My ST100 is ideal for mowing the thick growth along the creek bank, along walls and fence rows. You want to avoid cable tv coaxial cable and anything that the strings will pick up and wrap around the spindle and; Do Not Mow next to vinyl siding with the ST100!!!. This machine will cut very small saplings but anything more will shear off the strings. The OEM Cub Cadet/MTD orange strings cut very well - But I purchased a spool of the yellow .155 Shakespeare string from Tractor Supply Company that I cut to 18, 7/8” lengths like the 10 OEM orange strings provided with the mower. The engine always starts on the first or second pull and has always performed well for me when needed. The oil is pretty easy to change, But the air filter housing can be a royal pain to re-secure after replacing the old air filter. The Powermate seems to have many of the features of the higher end DR Wheeled String Trimmers. Thanks for your very informative video.
Mine works well for grass and weeds like this. Doesn't work well for steep ditches. You push it over the edge, but then you have to drag it back up. It's top heavy, so it falls over if you go along the slope and the slope is too steep.
I have sections that are rocky, roots, dippy and trippy. I would also need to get it to different areas over and around run off. Do you recommend this for me? Half acre of it all
did a creek bank this am that had washed away yrs ago replaced with those big busted pieces of rock & did just fine... adj cutting height up to start with...def recommend it...
I watched your video and I seen some problems you had going over the rough areas. I have the Cub Cadet ST 100. It has a bigger ball under the front that acts like a third wheel. The bigger ball makes going over rough ground a breeze. I have looked at other string trimmers and I wouldn't trade my Cub Cadet for any of them. Plus some of the string trimmer prices are out of line IMO.

@@scottmoss3410 Scott, Not knowing your exact conditions, I would talk to a dealer and find one that would let you try before you decide on a purchase. I don't know about all machines, but on the Cub Cadet ST 100 you can adjust the height of the strings cut. Plus the big wheels make the unit a breeze to push and pull around. I am 80 years old and move my machine around cutting areas like a much younger person. I also load and unload my machine by physically lifting it. The first time I saw someone leave the store with one of the Cub Cadet ST 100's I asked myself why in the hell would I buy that. I now know the answer. My first experience with using my unit was I was done before I had expected and I really wanted to use it longer. One more thought. I went and bought my string on a roll and cut from that my string lengths. Much cheaper. I also find the Cub Cadet to be very inexpensive to use on fuel. Good luck, Scott.
@@BrainToMush all you got to do is go back over it with a mower with a bag and you got it bagged if that’s how you like it! Personally I like to mulch mine down makes the soil more fertile! It’s almost like re-seeding your lawn sometime! Definetly helps make it grow if you don’t have the best soil! Mine is like fill dirt full of rock which is good it want flood away but not the best for gardens or growing grass! But I have a lawn so healthy I can’t keep it down! I cut it and it literally has a 5 o’clock shadow like what the hell go a week looks like it’s ready to bail! 😂
ECHO 24 in. 163 cc Gas 4-Stroke Walk Behind Self-Propelled Wheeled Trimmer This thing (Echo) is about $1,300. I run a lawncare business. Can I justify spending that amount on a trimmer like this? Or can I get by with something cheaper like what is in your video?
My SRM-225 will run circles around that.... and it came with a sling if you want.... If this was self propelled id probably buy for my business but definitely not gonna push it.
@@Detroit-gx5nd like string trimming an entire acre??? Just mowing Johnson grass or something with it?? Or do you mean string trimming the grass lines of an acre???
@@Irockskinnieslol1 more so just grass lines, fence lines and other hard to get areas for the tractor. I also have a pond and a ditch to cut. I just need more powerful tools.
@@CoryCDS definitely not, there’s litterally no way it is, trust me I spend like 30 hours a week at minimum running a string trimmer. At work we have measured before, my cutting swath with a straight shift string trimmer (I’m 6’2’’) is like 5-6 ft swaths. And I can do it basically just about as fast as I can walk, it’s tiresome for sure, this device may be “easier” I promise u it’s far from faster unless ur a homeowner and barely use a trimmer properly to begin with
You can also rent them. I used to do landscaping if you have a neglected yard they are the best and taking everything down! You only use something like this once. Then you can use your regular mower.
so is there an option here to swap out the spinning trimmer head to attach a lawn edger that cleans up the grass "over flow" that edge up my sidewalk / driveway?
I looks to me he is scalping the lawn. I hate triming, and it looks like it would be a good machine to use. I would like to know if the plastic cords maintain their length as you cut, or do you have to feed it yourself.
I acre yard of grass and Johnson grass took me on my Murray Trimmer mower 6 precuts . 155 diameter thick strings and oh sorry I meant 12 strings I forgotten about 2 loops holders and I have a almost a gallon of gas tank engine Bridge Stratton engine 4 cycle no premixed gas/ oil , no ethanol gas , I used 5 gallon of gas in one day on 1 acre land with a steep grade hills .
I have a Murray Trimmer mower 5.2 hrp Bridge Stratton 22" inches cut , 155. Thick star shaped lines ends kept shutting down climbing up steep grade hills just like your hill I cut Guy named Johnson grass terrible person . How do you keep your Trimmer mower running uphill ? I changed oil and kept filter cleaning up and grasses off the top of the motor . But doesn't matter what I do . It kept shutting down uphill just steep like your hill .
I just got one of these and I would like to know how to use and keep it where is won't make bald spots and tearing up the yard. I am new to this and any information would be appreciated. Love your beast
ive seen these machines for a long while now ... dam good idea only issue is throttle control on that unlike a hand held trimmer .. prob being alot of new sub division being built have cables for tv and internet coming out of side houses and there is no way to control speed and velocity of that machine .. only down fall .....
*My swisher swivels like that it's not a lever on mine though and mine sure doesn't start on the second pull either no matter how many times you push the bulb the real test for this would have been some really thick weeds. Everything you cut her i knock down with my riding mower. one upside to this is the head because none of the rest of them that i've seen have a ball that rides across the ground like the one does on this. all the others have a flat disk that digs into the ground*
I used mine to get to the areas I can't with my riding lawn tractor, I have a Dr Trimmer brand, what I like about mine is when I let go of the handle it only stop the line and doesn't kill the engine.
Unfortunately, Newscum won't let us Californian's purchase these. I sure do need it. I'm a senior with an enormous jungle in my backyard. Maintenance has quoted me 400 to 500 just for my backyard. I can't afford that on a fixed income.
Actually bought one in like new condition at a yard sale for $20.........yep, $20. The guy said he was through with yardwork and hired a yard service. These things are monsters in weeds and high grass. And my brother borrows mine periodically to clear his property. (Too cheap to buy his own, but that's ok.)
So would you recommend this 22in over the 17 in? We have 1.44 acres with high weeds/grass and some gravel/rocks.Or would a cub cadet or Dr. Trimmer be better? I wish there was a detailed VS video of these types of power equipment. How is the warranty and durability of Powermate?
Definitely go with the DR. I have had mine 7 years and the only maintenance is changing oil, cleaning it after every use, and draining fuel for winter...my snow blower was in the shop one year...used this to clear my drive... did a great job.🤣
My Murray Trimmer mower same thing as powermate Coleman Trimmer mower lasted 2010 to 2015 , there are no parts for the Murray Trimmer mower's Mower-Ball is broken made of half Plastic and Metal not good at all . $ 350. At Home Depot
I just picked up another brand from TSC. Use it to mow a couple small orchards, it actually works great. Will be good for mowing ditches too. But limited applications
I always wanted to mow my yard with one of these just never got my hands on one oddly enough cause I have owned and or operated Damn near every model a car, bike, truck, wrecker, equipment, mower, they make! I have been looking all over to purchase one. I have a need for areas I can't get with my mower
The DR is better because the engine do not stop when you release the handle just the string stops and it starts with just one pull. And it is also self-propelled if you get a different model plus you can get the chainsaw accessory that goes on in place of the string trimmer.
You made the job look so easy.I want one....Excellent video.Could you please explain what "GAS WALK BEHIND" means.
Just realised that what we call Petrol ,you call it Gas....
What's up John! So far so good on everything. I've been beating the hell out of it for a couple days now and no issues at all buddy
Lol, I forgot to mention, if you find out where the oil goes, let me know Haha
Trimmer head contact to concrete, asphalt and harder
surfaces may create premature wear to the height guide.
I had changed 3 times in two years
My Troy bilt has steering also and dont have to bend over to do it it’s right there next to all the rest today the controls!
Have you never seen the older older Dr field and brush string trimmers they have an even better swivel than that
just bought the Cub Cadet ST 100 few hrs ago... trying in the morning...
Let me know how you like it Jeff
will do... like Xmas Eve...
so far so good with ST100... did the job just fine for the machine... good line life & surprisingly good on gas considering the size of the tank...a bit more power would be nice but let the machine do the work & worth the$$$ so far....🙃
What’s a good solution there? I have this issue too.
Adjustable handle is nice also
I have sections that are rocky, roots, dippy and trippy. I would also need to get it to different areas over and around run off.
Do you recommend this for me?
Half acre of it all
Yeah Randall, this is made for that
did a creek bank this am that had washed away yrs ago replaced with those big busted pieces of rock & did just fine... adj cutting height up to start with...def recommend it...
only real complaint is that air cleaner cover tough to get at to clean filter after doing dry dust producing trimming...
Bill, I have a vacation Home in West Virginia and I have several wet areas that I have to mow. I am unable to use the riding mower because it will just sink and get stuck. So, I have to use a push mower or handheld weedeater instead in those areas. The problem with the push mower is the weeds and grass are always wet and I spend more time unclogging the grass build up under the deck than I do actually mowing. I wanted to see if you thought the Cub Cadet would handle wet area mowing well.
@@billhendrickson5506 Wow! Thanks for all the great info. This helps me with my decision. Happy mowing!

Great video bro
Nice field trimmer
You made a very helpful video
Great machine I need one 👍
Would be awesome if you could install a catcher on it for the clippings
Calm down, Man. You can't have everything in life.
@@tammyforbes2101 Whatever I mow down stays right where it fell. I'm way too lazy to bag:)
A sears I had...its problem was grass fibrous vines would wrap around the shaft.Any vine weed wrap?
What a beast
Hey my Brother how are you,That it's a awesome machine I love it,I have to get one to Bro take care later :)
ECHO
24 in. 163 cc Gas 4-Stroke Walk Behind Self-Propelled Wheeled Trimmer
This thing (Echo) is about $1,300.
I need this thing!!!
Tbh this is pretty awesome I want one of the machines asap I hate using weed wackers 😂😂
Just bought 1.. how did it hold up???
This seems legit SO much more difficult/cumbersome than a regular old straight shaft string trimmer
If you have more than an acre you have to cut every week than this is totally worth it. My string trimmer stinks in that situation. Too much work
@@Detroit-gx5nd like string trimming an entire acre??? Just mowing Johnson grass or something with it?? Or do you mean string trimming the grass lines of an acre???
@@Irockskinnieslol1 more so just grass lines, fence lines and other hard to get areas for the tractor. I also have a pond and a ditch to cut. I just need more powerful tools.
Looks like it works twice as fast as a trimmer though
Very good video, just curious if it slings rocks? I have a lot expensive windows at ground level and don't want to break them. Thanks in advance.
Конечно бросает,от лески в любом случае летит,только оператор защищен
so is there an option here to swap out the spinning trimmer head to attach a lawn edger that cleans up the grass "over flow" that edge up my sidewalk / driveway?
It’s a beast
I see theses becoming very very popular now at the price of riding mower and z turns
The 600/610 seeyto to go for me
Can you control the height you are cutting? I would like to mow my lawn without going into the dirt and making a mess.
You sir deserve a like and a sub. I too am industriously lazy.
Nice, is that Actual wire, or Nylon grade trimming grade material? Thank you for sharing your video on this.
Wish I bought one before i cleared everything with a weed eater haha but i still have some paths to keep up in the woods might get one for that
The good news is...it's all gonna grow back and you'll need it, then! :D
I just got one of these and I would like to know how to use and keep it where is won't make bald spots and tearing up the yard.
I am new to this and any information would be appreciated. Love your beast
adj the cutting height using wingnuts on trimmer head shaft... will never replace a mower unfortunately...🙃
adj cutting height using wingnuts above the trimmer head...
I've seen some that have a clutch throttle and self propel
Can u also mount a base on it as in MTD wheeled string Trimmer
What height did you have that set to? It looked like you were scalping a lot around your deck.
Is this better than a cub cadet?
ive seen these machines for a long while now ... dam good idea only issue is throttle control on that unlike a hand held trimmer .. prob being alot of new sub division being built have cables for tv and internet coming out of side houses and there is no way to control speed and velocity of that machine .. only down fall .....
I'm thinking to buy one for me 👍
Nice! Do wish they made the throttle adjustable (variable speed)!
Between the rain and all the freaking travel I have been doing. This may have to be my new mower. Lol
Lol, may not leave the cleanest lines, but will definitely get the height down for ya bro
Don't mistake this for a lawnmower. This is a weedwacker. If you can't cut, hire a professional. Don't use this on a lawn it will f it up.
I have the gravely.brand of wheelled weed eater mine has the Tecumseh Enduro 6 ho.engine
My back yard is a half acre of hills, how will this fair?
*My swisher swivels like that it's not a lever on mine though and mine sure doesn't start on the second pull either no matter how many times you push the bulb the real test for this would have been some really thick weeds. Everything you cut her i knock down with my riding mower. one upside to this is the head because none of the rest of them that i've seen have a ball that rides across the ground like the one does on this. all the others have a flat disk that digs into the ground*
Is there a problem with the string constantly breaking ?
Na, I haven't had any issues, but eventually they will break just like any weed eater line would do. That said, they are cheap and easy to replace
100f for 19$buy a roll size is 0.155
three times the work of a typical lawn mower.
I used mine to get to the areas I can't with my riding lawn tractor, I have a Dr Trimmer brand, what I like about mine is when I let go of the handle it only stop the line and doesn't kill the engine.
Dang they should just use a Milwaukee gen 3 drill it has way more torque lol
Can't find this anywhere online? Out of stock at HD
Where do you buy them
Echo SRM-3020T best out there.
Is this a good machine for under fence line and around fence posts for 15'acre pastures?
Yep 👊💪
@@ToolReviewZone Thanks!
I got to get me one of these
I was using it tonight to finish off that hill. It's fun bro!!!
Is it availble in karnataka
How's this been working out for you?
So how would it deal with Himalayan blackberry?
Is it a walk-behind or push mower? Meaning, does it have a "drive" option? Nice vid regardless. Your reviews are so thorough. 😁
I asked before hitting the link. Walk-behind. 🍻
Thanks bro. Na I guess you could use it as a mower to a point, but is best for high weeds as it wont leave you grass all nice like
4 cycle nice
can a blade be but on this to cun small trees
I buy and try ? Just 5 minutes didn't work .
These things are very very limited, flat ground. No ruts, flying debris. No no no,pass
I just picked up another brand from TSC. Use it to mow a couple small orchards, it actually works great. Will be good for mowing ditches too. But limited applications
can ya put a saw blade on it?
WHERE CAN THEY BE BOUGHT.
looks like somebody took a snowblower and put a weed wacker on it
it does right
How much it costs ???
I always wanted to mow my yard with one of these just never got my hands on one oddly enough cause I have owned and or operated Damn near every model a car, bike, truck, wrecker, equipment, mower, they make! Just nobody ever had one for some reason and where I live we need them you still see people out there with a damn reaper trying to clear 4 acres 🤦🏼♂️😂 not me I would go buy me one of these!
