  • Bret Primack is working on a documentary film about Horace Silver, "It's Got To Be Funky - The Music and Life of Horace Silver. To help crowdfund, please visit: www.gofundme.com/f/its-got-to...
When Horace Silver once wrote out his rules for musical composition (in the liner notes to the 1968 record, Serenade to a Soul Sister), he expounded on the importance of "meaningful simplicity." The pianist could have just as easily been describing his own life. For more than fifty years, Silver has simply written some of the most enduring tunes in jazz while performing them in a distinctively personal style. It's all been straight forward enough, while decades of incredible experiences have provided the meaning.
This composition, Barbara, first appeared on his Blue Note recording, "Silver 'n Brass." This performance is from the 1976 Umbria Jazz Festival with Steve Beskrone, bass; Eddie Gladden, drums; Bob Berg, tenor; Tom Harrell, trumpet and Horace Silver, piano.

Excellent! The Love-Live 1977 is a gem too. I think it's the same line-up. I have this on dvd, but maybe a bootleg.

Thanks for this. I met Mr. Silver at Tower Records in Hollywood, on Sunset. I saw him a number of times there. I think he was checking out his catalog. A very kind and gentle man. may our Source creator, continue to bless his soul and memory. 😊
