What I gathered from the lore is basically: Griffin School = Magic specialisation, somewhat knightly and heroic. Possibly linked to Toussaint. Cat School = Swordsmanship specialisation, ties to the elves. Wolf School = No specialisation, a sort of "jack of all trades" school. Viper School = A school focused on gathering monster lore, a sort of "knowledge is power" -sort of school. Bear School = Similar to wolf school, except they wear heavier armour and tend to not get along with each other. Manticore School = Alchemy specialisation, founded somewhere in Zerrikania or elsewhere in the east.
Griffin school is also the only school that behave more like knightly order, being formed by first generation witchers from the time there is only single unified witcher school led by Alzur himself. Another point is that the entire school is geared toward preparation and intelligent planning, it is said in the new lorebook that the final test of Griffin school witcher is either taking the egg of griffin in stealth or reciting in full memory a magical book known as Liber Tenebraum. So this guy is pretty much green beret style super nerd.
So far Wolf and Griffin witchers are the one that filled with relatively normal and rather sane individual. Most other witchers are just straight sociopath crazed killer that only care about highest bid contract. Even the bear school
In the books the Witcher doesn’t tend to carry both swords at once and not all monsters are weak to silver. Like vampires. Vampires are not weak to silver. Regis talks about this in the books. He only needs his silver sword for specific monsters. Cursed beings for example: the striga. So a dragon could most definitely be killed by something other than silver. It’s mostly a game mechanic added to the witcher games. Otherwise we would rarely use the silver sword at all.
Metallurgy 101: Melting point of steel 1510 degrees Celsius (2750 degrees F), melting point of silver 961.8 degrees Celsius (1763 degrees F). If I had to fight a dragon, then I think I'd be taking the steel. ;)
Ryan Williamson a lot of the Relic "steel" swords in the Witcher 3 are made from Dimeritium. This could possibly be an alloy similar to Timascus (titanium that's been forged and folded multiple times to create layers, forming a superior metal). As it's implied in the game that Dimeritium is superior to steel, and much lighter (Just like titanium).
I love the Griffin on my first new game+ I tried a paladin build putting most of my points in signs and sword play. Wish we could get a prequel set 500+ years prior to Geralt when all the schools were in their prime.
gphjr14 me too! If CD red ever makes another Witcher game I’d want a prequel set during Witcher prime time where u decided which school u start out with.
or have the schools reemerge remember that the unseen elder says the portals will be opening soon in 100 to 300 years witchers have really long life spans remember that geralt is like an 100 years old himself. and when the portals reopened not only will the unseen elder be able to go back home like he wants but the monsters will be able to come though again
It's a breastplate form of armor (just like real armor). That curvature served to deflect arrows from penetrating and could also help to deflect blows from swords. If you look at him from the rear, the rear side of the armor is flat. The front is curved for the reasons I said, and well, you''re fighting is all wrong if you're taking blows from behind. ;)
I agree with you, because its whole bulge in normal armor improves the deflection of blows, but this armor in mainly made out of leather making the bulge completely useless
In one of the books Geralt openly said that there is no such thing as a "witcher's code". There is a general consent about some things, but no one ever bothered to actually compile a code of conduct from that. He explained that it can make dealing with people sometimes easier, since a code is something that's respected. He can say that his code forbids him from doing something instead of saying that he doesn't want to do something. It's not something he makes up on the spot to behave however he wants to, though (although he admitted of sometimes hiding behind the code). He actually set some rules for himself and tries to stick to that. You might be better off calling it 'principles' instead of 'code'. Geralt said in the books that HE doesn't hunt dragons, but that doesn't really mean another witcher would be against it.

The one big gripe I have with the Witcher games is how all monsters are vulnerable to silver swords. In the books not all monsters were weak to silver, some were weak to steel or specifically meteorite steel. Also, anyone else think it's odd that you use silver swords on the wild hunt? They're not really wraiths, they're elves and you don't use silver swords on normal elf enemies like scoatel.
It is quiet strange, maybe silver swords have more of an affect against creatures that have experienced the conjunction of spheres? Unlikely, but I guess they had to make the game mechanics not to complicated so, they went for the simple one sword does one thing and the other does one thing haha.
The elves of the wild hunt are magically imbued to be bigger and stronger in the witcher 3 game but why would silver swords do anything to them other than being sharpened pieces of metal.
CDPR made an incredibly smart move changing a lot from the books, so it could better translate on game. If all the rules were followed from the books, the game would have crashed; much like it did with the more faithful, but still different, TW1. The books might be great, but as a 100% faithful game they wouldn't be anywhere near as good as CDPR's Witcher series.
I always questioned why Geralt uses a silver sword against the Wild Hunt and Gryphons, but I guess a lot of monsters like necrophages could have the argument made about them that their origins lie in magic, and if silver is anti-magic or something it might make sense. Gryphons are classified as hybrids so maybe their origins lie in magical breeding, and the wild hunt has arguably been enhanced by magic (otherwise they'd just be normal elves). Yet vampires don't really seem magical in that sense though, just from a different world.
Serious answer: because in the game you fight the wild hunt elves along with their hounds, which would certainly be weaker to silver. So to keep you from having to constantly switch back and forth they just made wild hunt vulnerable to silver

Jerome (another griffin Witcher from the witcher 3) was also said to be quite likeable and that he seemed to be more human ( apparently he was more emotional) than most other witchers.
You said that you didn't know where the Griffin witcher school was located but wandering around in the game I came across a castle in the far south of Velen near the Crossroads. It has a marker called The Last Bastion. The majority of the castle is buried underground but to me it resembles Kaer Morhen. Seems to me to make sense to have a witcher school in the north (Kaer Morhen), and one in to the west in Velen (Last Bastion). Then maybe the cat was in the South near Toussaint? I haven't read the books yet so could be just a castle that suffered in a war in one of the books but I like to think it's a witcher school.
Bioware Geek the Viper is in the South in Nilfgaard and the Manticore is in the southeast in Zerrikania. The bear is probably skellige. The cat is an exception, because it's an offshoot of wolf (aborted mutated wolf students). I checked out that place and you could be right re griffin.
"This world doesn't need a hero. It needs a professional." I love this quote so much. A hero is a random guy who runs into a burning building and saves the screaming kid. Professionals are the firemen who extinguish the fire, save everyone and minimise property damage. Professionals > heroes.
Awesome, video. Keep it up. Keep it up. Can't wait for the next one. About the School of the Griffin, there was even a suggestion that they were from the South. Very high standards in etiquette and their armor kinda resembles of a knight you might think that they were from Touissaint.
I could see the Griffons originating in Touissant due to the St. George chivalric knight errant archetype. Of COURSE a Witcher of that culture would go single-handedly challenge a dragon!
If you track down the Griffin gear in Tousant, (I don’t remember how it’s spelled off the top of my head) you find out that Jerome was trapped in a cave by his father. He never found a way out and died there.
Getting an itch for all things Witcher again and going through NG+ on death march, about to listen to the first book again and found this channel and holy shit...I'm loving this keep up the great work!
The Griffin school gear will always be my favorite simply because I use Signs all the time...Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but I'm pretty sure that Witcher George is loosely based on the legend of St. George and the Dragon, who was often depicted in medieval and Renaissance art: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_George_and_the_Dragon
I just started playing the Witcher a month ago... already beat the main quests for the 3rd game just bought the dlcs. I love the videos man an wish I found this game years ago!!
I naturally was drawn to the school of the griffin. My play style is the crusader/Paladin archetype in any RPG fantasy game. So naturally with out thinking I became a sword and sign build.

1:37 pardon me if this gets answered in the next few seconds, but idk how you can specialize in dual wielding and signs unless griffin school mutations involve growing an extra hand lol
I come back to these videos sometimes and you mentioned how Griffin Witchers are likely "posh" I agree based on the Griffin armor especially Superior Master and Grand master compared to other Armors it looks more fancy or elegant compared to the other schools.
Just found this video, Jerome died in Touissant in cave where he was teleported with his father for experiment i guess you find there grandmaster griffins armor schemes and also note where Jerome wrote that he killed his father (or deadly wounded) and so he locked him there with golem and no way to get out
One story says the school of the Griffin earned it's name from it's name from several members taking out a group of Griffins causes problems for people.
Maybe I'm the only one who would love to see a game where we play when the Witchers are in their prime and their traditions, craft, training, knowledge
Ik everybody has said this but A cool idea for a Witcher rpg/mmo is a game where all the Witcher schools are in their prime(either in the future or past) and you can create your character and decide what school they’re in and there can be a reward system where you can ask about your reward and maybe grow the Witcher school and there can be mechanics coming from that that can affect the ending
The witcher series is my favourite games of all time the witcher 3 especially and the school of the Griffin is my favourite and the tale of George is brilliant
The lighthouse plot is from a classic novel titled 'Jamaica Inn'. The bit about silver; Silver has been long known to be a metal that cleanses evil probably in part because of it's actual anti-biotic and anti-fungal properties. People who do not have a good understanding of what disease is or alloy allergies will come up with a 'just so' story to explain why something works. In Myth and Folklore, silver has long been associated with wounding creatures of ill intent and/or tainted by evil. The Wild Hunt has a reputation for being 'unseelie' (unholy). 'Seelie' elves may not have been willing to indulge in certain practices that their 'unseelie' counterparts would (like wanting to hold Ciri hostage for the remainder of her days after lying to her that they would release her after she had become pregnant by one of their number) , which could explain the Wild Hunt's vulnerability to silver over other elves. The Wild Hunt in mythology is oftentimes led by Oberon, King of the 'unseelie' court, and they hunt humans for sport.
Ah good point about the anti-fungal properties, I actually own a pair of socks that use silver as a way to prevent athletes foot etc. But I think that putting if you put too much thought into it, it doesn't really make a lot of sense, I think the best thing to do, is just accept that silver works in the way it does, because the plot requires it to.
Pretty sure if you follow the Griffin Grandmaster Treasure Hunt you find out Moreau left his son to starve to death wherever he was keeping him, I remember vaguely reading a note from the Son during that quest
Geralt says in witcher 3 "mounted witchering just never took off" but dammit if i can fight a battle from roach's back it becomes so much easier. You do more dmg at a gallop and you hardly ever get hit. I killed the cockatrice at crows perch at lvl 5 by doing that. The griffin school are 100% the most intelligent witchers lol. They wear proper armor, they fight intelligently, and they kill dragons lol
In regards to Witcher's not hunting dragons, an interesting thought. The image of Witcher George fighting a dragon, the image looks more like a basilisk than a genuine dragon. Basilisks referred to as lesser dragons, not "proper dragons". Perhaps the story is referring to Witcher George fighting a Draconid, which a Basilisk is a member of, and that basilisks are usually green.
I meant "fannish" in a good way, as in, "taking a lot of trouble to go in-depth and be thoughtful about something more casual players might pass over." Okay, I'll stop before I swallow my foot up to the knee.
9:05 A dragon was lurking there? It's funny that I found various Wywern, Goros and a few Basilisks in Valen/Velen but no actual dragons. Sure they are draconian species but to me a Wywern is on two leggs and dragons have four (I take the "traditional" four-legged monster with wings). Just being rather picky about that. Thus far I enjoy the griffen-armor-set. It looks nice.
Hi George, do you know that there is new lore on witchers, particulary the favorite witcher school of Griffin. Just check the A witcher's Journal PNP rpg supplement. There is even good information regarding the period known as Golden Age of Witcher, it is basically the 2nd generation of witcher when the unified order of witcher collapse. The era is also coincidence with the incident between Lara Dorren (ciri ancestress) and the human mage that led to the elven-human conflict. What a fascinating game it would be if it set in this era!
Holy cow you're totally right about needing a Gwent card. hmmm... it'd have to be doomed to fit the lore, so that opens it up to stronger effects. Geralt: Professional, the new card, would have been great for George. A ETB draconid kill doesn't seem that strong, but maybe if you could also target beasts and cursed ones. Def. Northern Realms cause they like worship him in Novigrad.
I understand that Witchers only use one handed weapons so they ca use Signs with their free hand...but what if the Griffins discovered how to dual-cast/combine Signs? As in, making a SERIES of hand gestures or two simultaneously to combine Sign powers? A Yrden that unleashes an Aard pulse, or combining Aard and Igni into a more powerful flame?
Honestly if i was a witcher i too woudln't take a contract to kill a dragon. Dont care how much they pay me, too risky. I mean i'd just take contracts to kill kill a few Nekkers, drowners, ghouls etc. Then retire and become a merchant. LOL! And open up a museum for the witcher gears and monster and whatever... Huh
To risky. You say well that’s why they strippers witchers of feelings like fear so they don’t avoid some dangerous contracts like pussys , because with emotions they wouldn’t have stayed on the path sleeping under the bushes and being treated like trash by the humans
I wouldn't be surprised if he used an oil on his steel sword to make up for his missing silver sword. We have seen through Ciri that strong monsters can be killed with steel swords if you apply the right oil.
It is hinted that Jerome Moreau was killed at the end of his fathers experiments. The audio crystal hinted that the father said sth like: I cant save my son, he was dead when he got mutated as a child to become a wittcher. I guess the cruel farther killed his son afterwards.

Most traits of the Griffin school to me scream Toussaint
"... needs a professional."
*casts Igni on a griffin*
PandaIndiana it’s op Use Igni when it’s sideways
On a royal griffin. It’d be a little more embarrassing if he used it on an arch-griffin as they are the ones with the immunity to fire
I love you lad, your videos are great I'm so happy theres someone who talks about the witcher lore. Keep up the good work !
thanks mate
great way to conclude the schools of the witcher. cant wait for the dragon video gotta be my favourite mythological creature because DRAGONS come on
My favorite dragon: Villentretenmerth.
"This world doesn't need a hero. It needs a professional."
I love this quote so much.
A hero is a random guy who runs into a burning building and saves the screaming kid.
Professionals are the firemen who extinguish the fire, save everyone and minimise property damage.
Professionals > heroes.
I just wish we were able to wear that badass cloak he wears in the cut scenes lol...
Videos about the characters will be interesting, I'm looking forward to them, anyway, good luck with it
Thanks man!
This world does not need a hero but needs a professional.
Geralt of fucking Rivia who uses a fire spell in a field of dry wheat
thelewis1997 me( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
thelewis1997 GERALT OF FUCKING RIVIA THATS WHO!!!! I'm kidding I hope you enjoyed the video
WitcherGeorge I did man quality content as always👍
*Proceeds to use Igni instead of Aard on a Griffin*
Lmao the confirmation of them using two swords killed me
6:38
Awesome, video. Keep it up. Keep it up. Can't wait for the next one.
About the School of the Griffin, there was even a suggestion that they were from the South. Very high standards in etiquette and their armor kinda resembles of a knight you might think that they were from Touissaint.
Good point mate !
I could see the Griffons originating in Touissant due to the St. George chivalric knight errant archetype. Of COURSE a Witcher of that culture would go single-handedly challenge a dragon!
WitcherGeorge Thanks! 👍😄
Tyler H For the Duchess! For Touissaint!
Great vid! Was super excited when I saw it was out. Best one out of all of them so far in my opinion. Keep it up!
thank you mate! means a lot
This armor set...
Thank you man!
Bro, keep going with this stuff! Really really interesting and well done videos. Monster and Character series r a must!
Thank you mate!
Thanks to your videos I'm learning so much, thanks! This is definitely my favorite school 🔥♥️
You find Jerome’s body when you’re looking for the grandmaster diagrams in the blood and wine expansion
I just started playing the Witcher a month ago... already beat the main quests for the 3rd game just bought the dlcs. I love the videos man an wish I found this game years ago!!
2:15 I saw that painting on the wall in Kaer Morhen
Which is weird you'd think to find paintings about wolf school witchers or elves there
I naturally was drawn to the school of the griffin. My play style is the crusader/Paladin archetype in any RPG fantasy game. So naturally with out thinking I became a sword and sign build.
My name is George. Was gonna start a Witcher George channel. Oh well. Great content Witcher George, especially this video about Witcher George.

“The codes are move of what you’d call ‘guidelines’ than actual rules” - Barbossa.
Until the TV shows I never heard of the witcher, I really enjoyed the first series, as I'm a Game of thrones fan. It was well made and instantly I got hooked on it. With your wonderful videos I can learn more about the witcher world, thanks for your hard work I appreciate the work your doing keep it up 👍
1:37 pardon me if this gets answered in the next few seconds, but idk how you can specialize in dual wielding and signs unless griffin school mutations involve growing an extra hand lol
Great stuff! Keep it up!
Papa george
I come back to these videos sometimes and you mentioned how Griffin Witchers are likely "posh" I agree based on the Griffin armor especially Superior Master and Grand master compared to other Armors it looks more fancy or elegant compared to the other schools.
Loved the video bro!
After watching this and the Gaunter O'Dimm video i had to sub
thank you mate
Great post. Thanks for doing these.
Glad you like it man!
Just found this video, Jerome died in Touissant in cave where he was teleported with his father for experiment i guess you find there grandmaster griffins armor schemes and also note where Jerome wrote that he killed his father (or deadly wounded) and so he locked him there with golem and no way to get out
I like their armour, most realistic of the lot
Can you do drowners lore? Btw congrats on 3,8k subs! :D
Sure! Thanks you mate
Really enjoyed the schools series of videos!
Thank you man!
One story says the school of the Griffin earned it's name from it's name from several members taking out a group of Griffins causes problems for people.
Amazing video is everything I was waiting for
Michael Kazmierczak thanks mate
its my favorite school and grandmaster type of armour set is incredible....
Griffen school ftw :D
Wow, 3K subscribers?! Nice work!
The Witcher's Code is more what you'd call guidelines than actual rules~
Maybe I'm the only one who would love to see a game where we play when the Witchers are in their prime and their traditions, craft, training, knowledge
They need to make an rpg style Witcher game where you can pick what school you want to come from. Would be awesome
In the Book Szpony i kły (English unofficial translation Claws and Fangs), it's confirmed that Coën is from School of the Griffin.
Ik everybody has said this but
A cool idea for a Witcher rpg/mmo is a game where all the Witcher schools are in their prime(either in the future or past) and you can create your character and decide what school they’re in and there can be a reward system where you can ask about your reward and maybe grow the Witcher school and there can be mechanics coming from that that can affect the ending
Imagine if one Witcher mastered the teachings from all the schools
The witcher series is my favourite games of all time the witcher 3 especially and the school of the Griffin is my favourite and the tale of George is brilliant
I love the tales too!
If you go to Kaer Morhen there is a mural of the Witcher George. Geralt says “mounted witchering just never took off”
Another great video!
My favorite witcher school if I say so myself.
Just a heads up, The season of the Griffin just started in Gwent and the Witcher George is in it
I was looking for your wideo on the school of griffin, then i realised you haven't made one until now.
haha well I hope you enjoy it!
Witcher George was using a steel sword but he probably made a oil to combat the dragon and probably relied heavily on signs.
Griffin: the perfect school for me! And thank you for all the (fannish) lore.
?
I meant "fannish" in a good way, as in, "taking a lot of trouble to go in-depth and be thoughtful about something more casual players might pass over." Okay, I'll stop before I swallow my foot up to the knee.
Nice video, was looking forward to this one
9:05 A dragon was lurking there? It's funny that I found various Wywern, Goros and a few Basilisks in Valen/Velen but no actual dragons. Sure they are draconian species but to me a Wywern is on two leggs and dragons have four (I take the "traditional" four-legged monster with wings). Just being rather picky about that. Thus far I enjoy the griffen-armor-set. It looks nice.
Not anymore!
i realy liked reading the witcher stories in treasure hunt quests. i recommed you to read all if you havent.
Actually the School of the Griffin was the first Witcher school it was called the School of the Griffin after a knight who's nick name was Griffin
we should have a witcher school that specializes in all of the school, like have their guild like "The elite witcher" or something like that.
Great video
Thank you mate
Love the content
My favorite school!! (In lore)
at 13:46 I wouldn't have the gull to let that griffin get that close
Hi George, do you know that there is new lore on witchers, particulary the favorite witcher school of Griffin. Just check the A witcher's Journal PNP rpg supplement. There is even good information regarding the period known as Golden Age of Witcher, it is basically the 2nd generation of witcher when the unified order of witcher collapse. The era is also coincidence with the incident between Lara Dorren (ciri ancestress) and the human mage that led to the elven-human conflict. What a fascinating game it would be if it set in this era!
School of the Griffin is the equivalent of the "Paladin" role in other fantasy games. Honorable Warriors/Knights that use Holy/Magic against the evil.
Somehow I would love witcher 4 to be about the life of George
Holy cow you're totally right about needing a Gwent card. hmmm... it'd have to be doomed to fit the lore, so that opens it up to stronger effects. Geralt: Professional, the new card, would have been great for George. A ETB draconid kill doesn't seem that strong, but maybe if you could also target beasts and cursed ones. Def. Northern Realms cause they like worship him in Novigrad.
Could be cool to see a witcher game where you created your own witcher and choose the school where your character his from
I understand that Witchers only use one handed weapons so they ca use Signs with their free hand...but what if the Griffins discovered how to dual-cast/combine Signs? As in, making a SERIES of hand gestures or two simultaneously to combine Sign powers? A Yrden that unleashes an Aard pulse, or combining Aard and Igni into a more powerful flame?
Honestly if i was a witcher i too woudln't take a contract to kill a dragon. Dont care how much they pay me, too risky. I mean i'd just take contracts to kill kill a few Nekkers, drowners, ghouls etc. Then retire and become a merchant. LOL! And open up a museum for the witcher gears and monster and whatever... Huh
Get a house next to Geralt's Corvo Bianco
To risky. You say well that’s why they strippers witchers of feelings like fear so they don’t avoid some dangerous contracts like pussys , because with emotions they wouldn’t have stayed on the path sleeping under the bushes and being treated like trash by the humans
Finally! :P
PQ5 haha thanks mate
Yeah, didn't have to read the notes. Just listened to this
Griffin school for the win!
About the monster series I'd love to learn more about giant centipedes or anarcno..idk, the gigant frealy lightging past spiders
