What all the Brava!!! commentaries overlook is the real significance of Cecilia Bartoli to opera and singing! She digs up baroque music that does not get played very much these days. That is - as far as I can see - mainly due to technical reasons: The music in itself is not flawed. The instruments of the baroque put some limitations on performance - for one thing: They don't make very much noise. The challenge Bartoli takes up appears to be: We have all that lovely music! There are technical problems, but if you are a good musician - we can deal with that - provided you want music and football. It is not that Bartoli can't sing (most) of the great arias - she can and does: Provided they don't damage her instrument. F.i. "Der Hölle Rache" is next to impossible for various technical reasons. Diana Damrau sings a great "Der Hölle Rache" - all the luck to her. The ambition is rather: I know it is old; but just listen what I can do with this little ditty!

I attended a Bartoli concert in Versailles in June. Her voice was pure magic, time stopped each time she sang. Unforgettable.
