Cecilia Bartoli arrived on the stage as a fully formed artist. She has had hardly changed ever since. And I like it that way. She is demanding, principled and independent artist. Surely not an easy ride for anyone who does not share her convictions. She is also highly conscious about what is good for her voice. Thus always wisely and thoughtfully choose the material to work with. All for the sake of music and artistic expression. She also wisely stood away from the competion for all and everyone's attention. There we have it - an original, polarizing for many and embodiment of extreme artistic integrity for the devotees. Brava!
I do not speak and understand her language, but it does not matter when I see her and am listening to her. She is marvelleous and even so beautiful! It is worth living for her!
Thank you for this...magic. The sheer joy and happiness with the joy of her singing was there at 26, and is still present. She came fully formed! Oh my, thanks again.
Like her sound or not, if you know anything about classical voice, you cannot help but appreciate this woman’s technique. It’s stupendous! The fact that she is still at the height of her game is proof. Magnifique!
I get what you mean about "like it or not". Her technique is pretty unique. It's like, "Legcatto" You can hear every single individual note and still manages to stay connected. I can get how an idiot wouldn't like her sound, but if you know anything about anything, you'll appreciate her artistry in her voice.
Fantastic! It’s amazing to think that the dedication and passion of this young girl was able to make a mark in the Opera World already within the first years of her career. This leaves some hope that the audience can still distinguish between real artists and marketing tricks.
Was lucky enough to see her live in concert at the University of Michigan as she knew folks there. Have loved her since the 90s and always go back to her recordings to renew my belief in the beauty of the world. Thanks for posting this.
Lucky you. I was a student there in the seventies and heard every major orchestra, Beverly Sills, Claudio Arrau and many others. And once walked into a symposium with Ginastera. But boy do I envy you, I adore her singing.
Fascinating documentation of an extraordinary artist at the very beginning. What other "mezzo-soprano" would have had the strength of character and trust in her own voice/musicianship to sing one of the great "soprano" arias of Rossini [Bel Raggio]. She understood much better than many, even experts, that the composers of this era wrote for voices that could sing the music and knew that she could sing this. She has done this often during her later career including singing both Fiordiligi and Dorabella and, of course, her recording of Norma. In tjat recording, she is the "prima donna" with the more mature voice with Sumi Jo [a lyric coloratura] in the "seconda donna" role of Adalgisa bringing that recording probably the closest to what the original audience heard at the premiere.
Rossini wrote "Una voce poco fa" for a contralto. For years it was hijacked by sopranos but nowadays opera houses cast mezzo sopranos in the role of Rosina.
MERCI !
I think that SOME of her facial expressions are to express the content of the music she is performing...however, some of the tensions in the throat and face, etc. this is NOT necessary to make the right tones and hit the right notes. It’s just faulty singing technique. Faulty technique or not, she has managed to carve out an incredible niche for herself and in the process, her musicological efforts have brought music back to the stage that would have otherwise been lost to time I think. I think she is infectious as a performer (even with the uncomfortable looking tension while she sings-which, by the way, is far less obvious when she is doing a fully staged opera as opposed to doing a solo recital...interesting. Maybe with all the staging she doesn’t have time to mess around too much and she just releases the sound more readily?) Having heard and seen her live on two separate occasions, I was pleasantly surprised by my reaction to her live performance. I certainly never thought I liked (or had ever even heard) this early opera of Vivaldi! After her concert, I was just so invigorated. I think sh is an important artist...and with great singers, they are known sometimes not only for all that they do very well, but we can recognize them because of some small faults. Like Franco Corelli-he had a lisp...Tebaldi sounded flat on recordings at the top of her register, etc. I think because classical singers do this incredible thing that looks entirely super human, people forget that singers are in fact, only human. They carry their instrument around with them all the time and it is subject to the vagaries of the human body and the mind. I don’t understand the negativity. If someone doesn’t care for her...well, change the freaking video! Walk on by! The negative attitudes in this world are a serious problem. She converts people to loving this music-that means more opera for all of us! That’s a win in my book.
Thanks to Cecilia... Because of facial expressions and music, I an Indian started listening to lot of Western classical music. Love and respect to Cecilia from India.
Is it possible to upload a breakdown of the program? I, of course, recognized the couple pieces, the 3rd piece I didn't recognize. Una voce poco fa and Di tanti palpiti. The music is beautiful, and I would love to listen to others singing it as well
» Mes hommages Madame.

Her mask is so phenomenally alive, a real pleasure to listen AND to watch all the emotions.

Excellent!
Thank you! It's always great to see these treasures I've never seen before.

Her facial expressions are not intentional. They associated reactions to elicit the right tone and hit the right notes!
Ma è la stessa cosa. È recitazione.

@@faberbio Bravo, lei recita pure.
they are intentional ; she's is in the moment of what the composer wrote for that particular character. Read the libretto
