2018 Honda Accord vs. 2018 Toyota Camry Comparison | Edmunds

  • Midsize family sedans have been steadily losing ground to crossover SUVs for the last couple of years. That trend may slow with the latest redesigns of the most popular sedans: the 2018 Honda Accord and the 2018 Toyota Camry. There's a lot to like about both of these cars, but which one will emerge as the best-in-class?
    As far as driving dynamics go, the average driver will notice very little difference. The big differences are found on the inside in feature content, design and technology. In the end, the Honda Accord pulled ahead of the Toyota Camry with a rather sizable lead.

      Better deal? The brand new SE has nothing no push bottom start, no adaptive cruise control, etc. The only reason for me to choose the Camry could be the 8 speed gearbox, other than that I don’t see why wouldn’t you buy an Accord when you can get a lot more car for the money you pay.

      greg black lol. Not true . Too many issues. It’s now no. 12 in reliability according to consumers reports. Toyota is far more reliable but if you like the infotainment system like I did buy it. Live with the recalls and that’s why I traded in my 18 accord for a new non purchased 18 Camry xle with the v6. Fanatastic reliability and power non stop with the v6. There is much more luxury in the premium Camry compared to the accord. They are reviewing the cheap versions.

    They are comparing a Accord Touring (highest trim), which starts at $33,800 to a Camry SE, which starts at $25,200. They should have compared a Accord Sport to a Camry SE or Accord Touring to a Camry XSE to make it more fair. Obviously the highest trim Accord is going to have an edge over the mid trim Camry.

      The Accord has always been the Standard of the World for mainstream sedans....regardless of price difference or trim levels to its competition. It's the reason the Accord is the Number 1, Retail selling sedan since the 4th Generation debuted in North America. Only way Toyota gets the Crown overall Number 1 spot is by dumping vehicles to Government, and Fleet buyers. Honda has never followed that trap....even in slow times (depressed car market), large numbers of Retail consumers always flock to Honda Dealerships.

    • @thevoxdeus

      When you're looking at the real price out the door it's more like a 9k difference. Seriously, top trim and better engine on the Accord vs mid level trim and worse engine on the Camry.
      Wouldn't actually affect the stuff they like best about the Accord, since the interior is solid on the mid trim models, but it would impact the driving experience. That weaker torque at low speeds on the Camry might be solved with 50% more horse power.

    I think it's worth noting that the 2.0T in the Accord is grossly underrated from factory (like every other manufacturers is doing with their forced induction cars). Thing is dynoing at 265 at the wheels which is somewhere around 300+ crack hp.

      Fadic 4 one the Camry has available smooth V6 engine with over 300hp. Two the Camry has stylish red leather which is a serious eye catcher. Three the Camry has the option to have its roof painted black which looks really dope. 4 the Camry has Birdseye view which incorporates a 360 camera so you can see around the car. 5 the Camry had a double mood roof. None of which the accord offers. The Camry also offers Toyota safety suit standard. The Camrys base engine is the most powerful in its class no turbo needed. Factor in the fact the Camry will be more reliable then accord and that is proven.

    I shopped between the Accord and the Camry, and bought the Camry with my own money. And since the Camry came out months ahead, a similar MSRP Accord would have costed 2k more. I admit the Accord is certainly better in the infotainment area. But I didn't like the poor ground insulation in the Accord since all the road noise sounds like it's coming from the ground. I found the Camry slightly quieter and I think will be more reliable.

    • @1973TJM
      @1973TJM 6 років тому

      I just bought the Accord and have not gotten the impression it is noisy inside. Did you actually compare the 2018 or just the 2017 Accord? The 2018 also has active noise suppression (like Bose).

    • @ronako2
      @ronako2 6 років тому +3

      Yes, I compared it to the 2018 Accord. I test drove several in fact. But once I sat in Camry, it was noticeably quieter. But I suppose it's a matter of preference. I prioritized reliability, hence why I leaned toward the Camry. Honda's reliability has been falling the past several years, so I didn't want to take the chance on the Accord for the 1st year model redesign. Or maybe I'm a little biased since my car before was a Camry as well which lasted 11 years which I only replaced because I wanted something new.

      Thanks for the reply. I agree with buying a Camry if you had previous good (great!) experience with them. I have never bought a Toyota or a Honda before. The 2018 Camry was also a 1st year model redesign, right? The cars are VERY similar, so get what feels right to you. I felt Honda had maybe a tiny bit more "get up and go" and the infotainment system is better. What really made the difference for me though was the interior space. More comfortable for my tall husband to ride in as a passenger in front of a kid's car seat. The Yaris is a rebadged Mazda. The 86 is a rebadged Subaru. It's like Toyota is confused as to what they wanna look like. Don't get me wrong, some vehicles have resembles (like the front end of the new Prius, Rav4 and CHR), but other than that, Toyota's lineup is all over the place in terms of design.

    I traded my Camry for a Honda Accord (loaded). Biggest mistake of my adult life! My Camry never spent a day in the shop & I traded it in with 103,000 flawless miles on it. At 75,000 miles on the Accord the transmission went out (complete loss & had to have the entire transmission replaced). Two months after the transmission went out the power steering pump went out. Not to mention every panel on the Accord (hood, front quarter panels, roof, deck lid & rear quarter panels) developed huge discoloration where the paint flaked off & basically made the Accord look like it had paint cancer. Somewhere in all of that the power locks stopped working & the center display went out. I’m never going the Honda route again. I am back in a Toyota (Prius- that has out-lasted the Accord with zero problems) & will probably opt for a Camry when I am done with my Prius. Also, Consumer Reports & other indexes that measure cars & consumer satisfaction put Toyota at #1 (not Honda) & to show how great & consistent Toyota is their luxury division, Lexus, is #1 in the luxury lineup of automobiles (not Acura- in fact, Acura has been slipping). At the end of the day, Toyota just builds them better. A lot better.

      Honda seems to always have had issues with their transmissions. honestly when people buy a Toyota, they usually do it for one thing only. Reliability. I put 200,000 miles plus on my Toyota Corolla..17 years later it still running, did it have issues? Yep, but mostly due to my fault. People say that Hondas are up to par in reliability to the Toyotas, but that simply is not true. Toyota is a more reliable vehicle. That's why they didn't go with a CVT in the Camry..if it ain't broke don't fix it!

      You've made some valid points, but to say that Camry isn't even on par with a Mazda that required a name change (Mazda 626 to 6) is reaching. Also the Accord needed to make the change to cvt to address their transmission issues, so unless you really believe that it was done to increase fuel economy your still reaching. Mazda 6 has the highest fuel eco in the class and it does not have or require a cvt to accomplish it. This is Coming from someone who agrees with you that the 18 Accord is a win over the Camry but disagrees with your reasoning.

      Toyota is probably a notch ahead in overall reliability at the moment, and i'm on my 6th Honda so no bias here. All of mine have been very reliable, but Honda has had some problematic transmissions and some good ones. No problem with their 6 speeds, but the verdict will be out in a few years on these newer transmissions. Honda does make the most reliable engines though and they are taking more chances with their powertrains at the moment. We'll have to wait and see how these new turbo engines, CVT's and 10 speeds hold up on the Hondas. A naturally aspirated inline 4 Honda with a manual transmission will no doubt be extremely reliable, but there is definitely more potential for things to go wrong when the powertrains get more complicated.

It no longer has a CD player and some older owners in the forums didn't like that. The fact is optical drives are no longer the norm for new computers and media in general. There is a noticeable delay when driving this vehicle in comparison to the Camry. Like I said thats just my opinion. I have a 2014 EX-L and do love it. I've always felt the high end Accord was really somewhere in between the Camry and the Avalon so maybe the comparison is not totally fair. I've always liked how Honda really just prices a trim line and appoints it well with usually the only upgrade being GPS and who needs that anymore. I was worried about my CVT but it really is a nice smooth transmission with no issues as of 52k. I wanted to give the new Touring 2.0 a year to prove itself and may buy next year. As for the USB, just spent two hours with the grandson in the back, no problem stretching out long cord from the front to the back. Four people should not have a problem sharing two ports IMO.

      socal benny you are such a liar 🤥 it just came out and that really doesn’t mean that it. Will fall old turbo charged car fail but the new one will be very reliable you will be surprised in a couple years what you’ll fine with the Camry!

      All I am saying is that a turbocharger will not have a reliability that will last as long as the engine even if you baby it. Turbochargers will fail long before you get 200k in your odometer. Going over 200k without any part replacements is how I measure reliability.

    Looks like Honda cheaped out on the doors. Look at that red exterior paint showing on the interior. You don’t see the blue paint on the Toyota interior.

      Um, paint is actually applied everywhere before assembly. Your use of the word "exterior" is silly. After all, there is no "interior" paint.

    • @chrisak49
      @chrisak49 6 років тому

      Lol yes paint is everywhere before assembly but if Honda wasn't being cheap they would have covered the paint with interior trim.

    • @chrisak49
      @chrisak49 6 років тому

      Nope its inside the window. Previous year Accords didnt cheap out like this. Toyota is usually the one that is cheap and doesn't give interior trim to cover the exterior paint. This year it looks like the opposite.

    You guys telling me that the cabin is more important than the power train? they can refine the cvt as much as they want , I'll stick with the normal automatic, not to mention that toyota still offers the V6, with 301hp, I'll take the camry any day, if I'm going to choose a car based on the cabin, mazda wins over honda hands down, honda just copying the mazda design when it comes to cabin. THAT HONDA EXTERIOR IS SOO UGLY BY THE WAY!

      Efrain Vargas but the 2.0 is faster than the V6 Camry and the Mazda 6 does not have a better cabin I’ve sat in both the Mazda lacks the features technology and space not to mention this is about equal in terms of materials

      The best CVT is like saying the the most reliable crack addict. In the end, both will let u down sooner rather than later.
      Traditional trans >>>>>>>>> CVT economy junk.

    • @skifree0
      @skifree0 6 років тому

      It depends on how you look at it, from a reliability standpoint no matter how flawed the CVT is in long term reliability, we are talking about HONDA here. Their 5AT (traditional) automatic is terrible for reliability, basically requiring a rebuild if you want to keep if for the long haul.
      And if we area talking about "fun" aspect of it. Suck it up and buy a manual. I've test driven the CVT on the Honda, it is sluggish, but I found almost all auto's except the ZF8 to be like that.

      Efrain Vargas bro the accord 2.0 comes woth a 10 speed transmission. And it defeats Camry's transmission.

      gsxellence the optima's safety features arent as good. And the infotsinment screen aint that good either. Fuel economy is lower and its SXL is slower. Not as much interior room either. Trunk space lower too. Reliability.... we shall see.

    If infotainment system is deal breaker then just play with your own balls. Why you need exactly Apple play or Android Auto ? To play with it while driving or anything else. Honda uses 1.5L engine with turbo on it. Do you really think that small engine can handle big power of turbo? How long you engine might last ? Most of them are CVT to make it cheap ass car. Without infotainment system you can drive car but without engine you cannot drive car.
    Think about it what you want ?

    • @skifree0
      @skifree0 6 років тому +3

      If you have your heart set on long term reliability you should NEVER be looking at honda. They have never had a good reputation. Forget the CVT, No matter how cheap it is, it is significantly better than their old 5AT (Almost every person owning it, including myself has had a re-manned one put in for the long term. THEY ARE TERRIBLE).
      As for the 1.5T, I have no issues with it. The L Series is a proven block, And the turbo they attached is extremely small turbo (it's a derived TD025). Turbo's for the long term also have made significant improvement since the last turbo era. Syn-oil helps prevent oil decomposition from the turbo heat. and we have VVT that drastically improves resistance to knock.
      as for carplay and auto. That really depends on you. I've known many depending on that feature as it saved them thousands on not needing the nav option on the car. I barely use my own nav, because android auto is so good. and scout maps is not really of comparison (the app reviews tell that story).

    Test drove the Camry SE and Accord EX back to back today. Liked both a lot but was leaning toward the Camry as there was less road noise and felt more luxurious. Then I read Edmunds owner review comments on the infotainment/phone interface on the Camry as well as this video and that is a huge concern. The Accord Apple Carplay syncing up to the car was awesome and effortless. So the choice is avoiding daily/weekly aggravation with the Camry connectivity for the price of having a small turbo engine.

  • @jowowetan

    Entune with no car play really sucks but Toyota comes with 2 yrs. free maintenance. On the Accord side, turbo engine requires extra maintenance down the line and higher insurance so I'd still go for the Camry but with V6 XSE trim.
