    It took me 7 months of this pain until I was able to self-diagnose. It was on and off again despite teaching 7 days a week (some vinyasa [hot], some beginner hatha, and 1 gentle yoga) because duh me, felt like I needed to STRETCH, like you said!
    I now know how this happened. I was sick in February w/ a torrential cough constantly bracing myself for the sneezes or the coughs. So that when I was *mostly* cough free after my week off, I went back to teaching and really going for it if you know what I mean.
    Alas, at the tail end of teaching one of my 1st classes back (and 30 minutes before my other class), I got into such a coughing jag, I couldn't brace ANYTHING, cancelled my next class, and I suspect is when it happened.
    This is the ONLY video that I suspect will allow me to help myself & I have so much gratitude.

    So helpful. My slipped rib syndrome has been getting so much worse now that I teach 6 days a week. It’s always twisting, back bending, and forward bending for me. Sometime I can literally see my rib poking out, and this is so gross, but I just gently place my palm on it and rub it back into place. Anyways, I’ll start working on this. Really wish they’d spoken more on this in the 200 hour. 😭

    Hi Denice! Found your video yesterday. Have had discomfort for weeks and nothing I did would help. Finally, I did some research and was able to figure out what was going on. Costochondritis!
    I might have had slight cases of it before, but it quickly resolved. I tried out some of the suggestions offered by physical therapists. Some were helpful, while others caused even more discomfort.
    In this video, you gave a very clear explanation of the condition and some really great suggestions on how to fix myself. I tried out the crunches and planks as suggested. This morning I was significantly better! Moving forward, I’m going to continue implementing these movements, along with bracing (of course!). Deep gratitude from a flexible yoga teacher! 🙏

      If you have a diagnosis I suggest you find a doctor who understands this syndrome. There is a Facebook group and a group of thoracic surgeons who can actually help you. These stretches would exasperate this and isn’t accurate medically. It doesn’t improve and there is no recovery as the cartilage doesn’t just repair itself to the bone without assistance. The twist would send most of us to the ER in severe pain. Please please seek out the group and someone who can help you. I’ve suffered too long and it was PT, stretching and tips like this that only made it worse. I finally sought out Dr Hansen in West Virginia and got a diagnosis. He can explain the syndrome, how he helps and can shed light into the syndrome. If you good dr Hansen and the videos he has published on UA-cam, you can get a really good understanding of the syndrome. Sending you my best and really hope to find relief!

    I just happened across your channel and coincidentally, I slipped a rib 3 days ago. It’s happened twice before but I had no name for it. Also, I had a shoulder impingement a few months back and had no idea why. I am binge watching your videos and learning so much. A huge thank you!! I began doing yoga again ( as a student) regularly (and only on you tube because of the shutdown etc) at the beginning of COVID, and wish I would’ve had you then. Thanks again so much.

    My left lower rib suddenly look different im experiencing mid back and upper shoulder pain usually flares up when taking a deep breathe. Upon touch I don’t feel any pain on my ribs as it feels more internally but I can see the difference in my ribs. I visited my doctor and got diagnosed with costochondritis.
    Do I actually have slipped rib ?

    • @activatedasana
      @activatedasana  2 роки тому +1

      Possibly.
      The word "costochondritis" simply means you have inflammation of the cartilage that connects the bony part of the rib to the breast bone (sterum) which is on the front part of the rib cage.
      Since your pain is on the back side, he might be using the word to mean the cartilage that attaches the rib to the spine, which is "thoracochondritis" I believe. You might get a better diagnosis and possible treatment from a physical therapist or chiropractor.
      Hope you get some relief! D

    I noticed you failed to mention connective tissue disorders such as EDS, chronic Lyme disease and bartonella. These injuries are far more likely to occur in people afflicted by these problems. Great explanation of the injury but none of your recommendations will actually “fix” the problem. In fact, the things you suggest could actually aggravate the condition.

      My intention in this (intentionally) short video was not to give a comprehensive overview of the condition and the etiology, but just to show some possible cases where this could happen in otherwise healthy yogis or athletes.
      If the video helps people understand the condition a bit more, that's great. For some it may even help self-treat. I hope I didn't come across as making that seem like a sure thing!

      @@activatedasana yeah it actually did get better thank you, but my rib is injured again 😞
      I’m a boxer though, it was a sparring injury initially that started all this off, I took a hard right hook to the body. It had started to feel fine but I got hit on that same place about a week ago and it’s just started all the pain again. I really found your video useful though and also watched some others :)
      Quick question… my gf is nearly 4 months pregnant… are there any moves you could suggest for lower back pain for her … or just any yoga that is beneficial during pregnancy?
      Thank you:)

    Many people suffering with SRS have the thin cartilage at the front where it joins to the rib above, actually break. Im not sure these core building exercises would help in these kind of cases?

    • @activatedasana
      @activatedasana  2 роки тому +1

      Its always better to get out ahead of this type of injury with good movement habits. If you know how to set your core and develop Range of Control (rather than always going to your extreme passive end range) that's the best preventative approach.
      I agree with you, if someone is delicately built or deconditioned they will have to start even slower, letting the tissue heal first, and possibly getting an orthopedic adjustment to reposition the rib.
      But for those who are in good physical condition, they can often self-treat very effectively. This is part of coming to know oneself and extremely valuable.
      Sadly, general doctors rarely can give advice on this issue and people are often medicated when dealing with the instability is the path to healing.
      Thanks for commenting!

    I’m not a yoga person. I don’t know the term”binding”, can you explain? I’m having debilitating pain right where you’re pointing. Been to all kinds of ppl and no one has mentioned a slipping rib. I started researching it and believe this is def my issue besides having a scapula issue no one can figure out. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I will try the breathing exercise.

    • @activatedasana
      @activatedasana  2 роки тому

      It's important to have a assessment by a physical therapist if this does not get better on its own. If you find it is a re-occurring issue, see if you can identify a cause. When you are out of pain, make sure you are practicing "bracing your core", especially when lifting or carrying or twisting.
      In Yoga practice, we bind with our arms wrapping around our legs in some postures.
      Best wishes!
