I love the way she feels the music on her sitar. It's as if the instrument is an extension of herself and the sounds emanating from it are her thoughts set to a timeless melody. It's easy to get lost. She could be my twin although I know not how to strike one chord. What a beautiful person! Simply Awesome!!!
Doug Eason they are usually made with antler that is illegal to use in India. Because the species is now endangered due to over hunting. As a vegan myself, I struggle with the music I love vs the creed I hold dear (no pun intended). So I use a synthetic bridge and I honestly don’t hear that much of a difference especially with a khulla jawari like Anoushka’s. In an ideal world the shed antler would be the only antler used but that’s not how sitar makers are procuring the antler.
Anoushka - Pandit Gobind Ram the father of Pandit Rikhi Ram lived in Lahore before the partition of India and he hung around a guy who made sitars. His name was Sher Mohammed. He is the one who taught the basic's to make the sitar. Pandit Rikhi Ram taught his son Pandit Bishan Dass Sharma who set up shop in Connaught Place in Delhi. Today Ajay Sharma handles the business. It is rather unfortunate that nobody gives credit to Sher Mohammed.
@nadaboom that's compromise. tabla is a leather instrument, sitar is deer horn but this is music and she is compromising but she doesn't have kill animals in every possible way. if she reduces the possibility (say: eating veg) is better than killing it all. no? so i guess it is not so hypocrite . :)
There are synthetic skin tablas now and they aren’t using shed antlers. It’s illegal in India to use the antler now because the deer where hunted to near extinction and antler was prized.
Western classical musicians: cannot play a single note without a music sheet with everything mapped out for them. Indian musicians: 70% all improvised music, they pick up an instrument and the music just pours out of them like a fountain of beauty. The difference is startling.....
Indian music is ´Sadana´. Its worship. You need atleast 10 years of intense classical training to perform as a vocalist or instrumentalist. You surrender completely to music

Not true at all, there are several early music groups that play for example baroque music where improvisation is required.
